The ED/BC Podcast. You think you hate it now, but wait until you listen to it.

SPEAKER_00

Welcome back to another edition of the EDBT podcast Eric Dobra is Brian Coleman coming to you on the night after the uh Team USA soccer falls to Belgium 4-1, Brian. Uh I wanted to wait till after that game was over to get your thoughts about the tournament. Uh listen, it's a terrible loss for soccer. We'll get into all that, but I will say it's been a success for the country. I think uh the fans are fired up. 66,000 people there last night. My son went to New York City last Saturday to watch England games crying out a lot. So people are into it. Yeah. What's that? People are into it, but the team's takes. Yeah, I know.

SPEAKER_01

That was disappointing last night.

SPEAKER_00

Um seven to one.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, probably should have been. It was a you know, I turned it off at three to one because you knew when they weren't coming back. I saw that last goal, or I don't know what the goalie was doing. It reminded me of like when I watched my kids play soccer and though we were like six, and the goalie like sort of forgot to run back. Like, no, you got to come back in the net. It was a really sloppy. I mean Mark Vianto's playing first. Uh not that bad. I can't be that bad. I can't be that harsh on the goalie. And we're neither one of us are soccer experts, but I have to admit, and I didn't think it would do this. Um, last night aside, I've been surprisingly into it. But I told my wife, I think it's right, because she's a huge soccer fan, whole life, played it, coached it. I said, This is the best I'm gonna do with soccer is probably be like the Winter Olympics, where like I love watching like the skiing and the bobsleds once every four years. Yep, but that's it. So I'm not gonna go try and find a Premier League team or anything. No, thank you. Um, but yeah, last night's thing was disappointing. And it's there was a lot of the thing with the red card and the thing and the red card being suspended, I think that really took a lot of juice out of it. To me, it just felt like, oh man, if they win, they're gonna get accusations that accusations that they cheated. If they lose, you're bummed out. So it was kind of a lose-lose situation, but you would hope it would have been you're right, because people were excited for it, and you would have hoped that last night against Belgium um that they could have at least shown up, but they didn't really show up. I'm not enough of an expert. I know some people say they were they were tepid or tent and tentative. I just look I just thought they were sloppy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Hey, listen, I I mean again, I'm not an expert either, but when you hear that a cup they didn't start a couple of their best players in the game and they were like doing load management, getting ready for Spain before the game even started. What does that tell you, Brian?

SPEAKER_01

I mean it tells me that you maybe you had some of your priorities out of whack, is what it tells you.

SPEAKER_00

Uh no, the Belgium did. Belgium had people resting. Uh oh. Okay, see. No, Belgium had a couple of their top players didn't play early on.

SPEAKER_01

So well, then Belgium was pretty confident, and they were right to be confident, and they celebrated on the field afterward. They they earned to the victor goes to spoils, and good for Belgium. Um, some things happening today. You know, I I did see I took my daughter to the dentist. I uh Argentina was losing to Egypt today, which it would have been apparently a huge upset with like 76 minutes uh in. So you got like what 15 minutes left. Who knows with this extra time? I don't know. But about 15 minutes left, I get to my I get to the dentist, look at my phone, and all of a sudden it's from 2-0. Argentina, the heavy favorite, is going ahead in the extra with like nine at the ex with that and in extra time they uh Donna hadn't taken the lead. So they're still alive. That was, I'm sure, an exciting game, and we'll see what happens from here. But I I think the other thing too, Eric, is when the ugly Americans like us, this is such a super friendly TV sport in terms of how it's like there's not a lot of interruptions, there's not a lot of commercials, and for the most part, it's over and under two and a half hours, what two hours and fifteen minutes. Plus, being in the US, we're not dealing like you know when you watch like over like the Olympics. We're not like, are you gonna get up at three o'clock in the morning to watch Spain and Ireland, uh watch Spain and Argentina? No, there there is, it's really a TV friendly game. At least this World Cup is for us selfish Americans.

SPEAKER_00

Well, yeah, the games were alive. If it was in the Olympics, that game would have been on tape delay today at six o'clock.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly right.

SPEAKER_00

So a couple other things. Um, again, just the analyses in game, like like I said, they were they were clearly outmatched. It was like, you know, watching a football team being down 21,000 at the first time. That's what it felt about. You know what I mean? Uh, second thing I read I saw a lot today on social media. Of course, there's always gonna be a big overreaction. Uh well, we have to lower the cost of youth soccer in this country if we want to compete, you know, blah, blah, blah. It costs $5,000 to play. Yeah, that happens in all these sports, whether it's baseball, whether it's basketball, whether it's hockey, all these travel teams. It's a cottage industry, it's a business. These people do it for a living, so it's gonna cost you money. It's not gonna change the fact that the U.S. soccer team's not as good as these other teams. We don't care about soccer in this country. It's NFL, it's basketball, it's baseball. It's soccer is not important. It's a youth sport in this country because it's easy to play, and you throw 11 kids out there when they're five years old and one ball. Get them running around.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's that's the thing, too, isn't that what like um what we would say about we say that about basketball. One of the great things about basketball is anybody can play because you just need a ball and find a hoop. And soccer should be that way. You just need a ball and find a net.

SPEAKER_00

Well, there's one difference. You can score in basketball. You can't score.

SPEAKER_01

You can score in basketball. And I hate this is again, this is the youngly American part, Eric, but we've been we're old guys now. We've been hearing about how soccer, a number one, for 40 years, like this such this event, this match, this tournament is going to really push soccer ahead in the U.S. I've been hearing that since I was a kid. And it probably was going on in the 70s when Pele came over here and played in New York City, which I mean the biggest star in the world came and played in the biggest media capital in the world. Guess what? It didn't take off. It's much more proper than we were kids, because when I was kids, everybody played like little league. You didn't even like baseball, you frickin' played little league, although I did like baseball. Now every kid plays soccer, at least when they're young. And it it is what it is. Now it's not a bad thing, but yeah, I'm I don't need to hear again about how soccer is gonna push ahead and be on the level of like the NBA and Major League Baseball. It is what it is. If you're a fan, enjoy it. Tournament's phenomenal, it's a lot of fun. I was way more into it than I ever thought I would be this year. Uh again, because it's easy to watch and it's all the games are on convenient times. There's a little 10 30 starts.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's summertime.

SPEAKER_01

So just enjoy the last few weeks of it, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's summertime. Your kids are watching. I left today. My wife and kids were home, they're watching it. You know, like I said, my son went to New York City, took a train to New York City with his friends at uh 10:30 in the morning to go watch a soccer game at some New York City, I don't even want to know where he was, but you know, he was there with his friends.

SPEAKER_01

That's just good parenting on your part.

SPEAKER_00

You know what I mean? So came home at 10 o'clock at night, you know, and he bought an and by the way, he's rooting for England. He had an England shirt on last week. I don't I don't know where that came from, but he just whatever. He is where it is, he's having fun with his buddies, and so that part of it's great. Uh TV ratings were tremendous. I think 16 million people watched that last night. Uh huge ratings, yep. Great number for Fox. And again, it's you know, people are saying, oh gee, that's a you know, the Yankees Red Sox only got four million on Sunday night baseball last week. You can't compare the two. Baseball's every day, this is once every four years. So I read a lot of that today, too. It's like, God, shut up. If the Yankees and Red Sox played once every four years, you know what the rating would be? Yeah, huge, exactly.

SPEAKER_01

So just yeah, the NBA had if the there was an NBA World Cup where it was a one and done single elimination tournament that happened even once a year. Yeah, yeah, but this is different. This is, you know, this is that's part of the excitement, is the one and done, and the fact that it's only every four years. And again, we're hosting it, and it's been kind of fun to see all these fans from other countries. You know, you were at the pilot, the pilot penchy with Brian. You were at the Travelers a few weeks ago. They were on TV, I'm sure you saw the Norway bands in there. Yeah, they're right next to it. Yeah, so it's great, and we'll see what happens. Um, again, I forget who's playing tonight, but Argentina pulls off this miracle win. This Switzerland just won on penalty kick, so I watched a little of that game. This is where, again, the ugly American uh comes back to me. As good as like the England game was Sunday night, and it was a phenomenal game. I was into it the whole way. This game, the game between Switzerland, I forgot the play was was like watching paint dry. Yeah. It's like when you say soccer's boring, that game was boring. So great game.

SPEAKER_00

Columbia and there's penalty kicks, right?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, penalty kicks, which are kind of fun, but it does feel feel kind of weird.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, all four you're waiting four years to play a game that's decided in penalty picks. That's why you keep playing. It's like the NHL doesn't do a shootout in the Stanley Cup. Keep playing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, exactly. And but you know, that I am doing the thing that we'll die hard soccer fans that I live with one, and she loves it when they're like, the goddamn feels too big. No wonder it's so hard to score now. Why don't they go to sudden death over time? And what's with this red card automatic? Like, they love it when they love it when non-soccer fans want to jump and intrude on their sport and tell you what the hell they should be doing differently. It really goes over well. They embrace it.

SPEAKER_00

And the idea that they can't stop the digital clock during a hydration break, and instead they add the two minutes on at the end of the half, it's the most stupidest things they've ever seen in my life. Makes no sense. Stop the damn clock. It's not hard.

SPEAKER_01

You push more dire hard NFL fans. Link where they keener to figure out how what a catch is. So it's not like we're not like used to this stuff kind of nonsense. Push the button.

SPEAKER_00

So anyway, we spent enough on that. It's a good tournament, it's been a huge success. So more power to him. But again, soccer is not taking over the world. We still care about the NFL. We care about the NBA. I want to get your thoughts, Brian. I I'm still, what's it been a week now since the Celtics made the trade of Jalen Brown? I listened to Brad Stevens' press conference yesterday. Uh he didn't sell me, I'll tell you that much. Um, I mean, the owner's saying he's not cheap. The new guy saying he wasn't looking to move money. That when the time is right, he'll spend again. I I understand that having two players that make up you know 70% of your payroll is not, but that's the NBA. That's what it is. And and they signed Brown to the contract. So explain it to me, Brian. I don't get it.

SPEAKER_01

I I've had a terrible trade. I've had six weeks, uh, six days to digest it. And I was dropping my daughter off at something when I saw the trade, and I just sat and I hadn't, I just dropped her off. And when I saw the trade on my phone, and I made sure it wasn't like it wasn't like a um, you know, one of those parody accounts, because I swear to god, I thought it was a parody. Yeah, I I had to sit in the car running for a few minutes because I forgot how to drive for a couple minutes. I thought you locked up the windows and pulled in the garage. Yeah, uh listen, uh I I I hate the trade, I but I'm starting to understand that what the trade is. Um, there's a lot of your overreaction. Celtics Twitter has been just off the chain with the ridiculous overreaction to it.

SPEAKER_00

I made sure I listened to the Bill Simmons podcast this week, Brian, just because I wanted to get his take on it.

SPEAKER_01

I listened to Bill Sims. I hate listening to yeah, I call it hate listening. I listened to Bill Simmons. I listened to Zach Lowe, who did they both of them, and uh they were just like, I no, I can't believe this trade. There's a lot of things going on here. Number one, uh I wrote for teams that are run terribly. David Stearns is killing my summer. I've spent 30 years without a Super Bowl because either Jerry, some combination of Jerry Jones or Steven Jones runs my football team that I live and die with. And you know, I don't have to get into like the rages recently. The Celtics have been such a well-run organization really the last 25 years, and Brad Stevens has done such a good job for the most part. I'm maybe this I finally said, okay, I hate it, I don't get it, I don't like the explanation. I'm gonna trust that he knows what the hell he's doing because they've been really fucking good at whatever job he's been at with the Celtics since he got there. So I've started like he's got cred that quite frankly most GMs and even and any part of the NBA has, but I still don't get it. And I think Eric the two for 70 is kind of funny because my buddy John Carralis asked the question, and it was a great question, and Brad said, Yeah, that's a great follow-up. They still have two guys making up 70% of the cap because Paul George is making fifty-seven million dollars. And Yon, guess what? If they had the Giannis trade, they would have to sign him to extension, two guys making Super Max. So what obviously is going on here, they would, and I think a lot of teams are like that, they prefer not to do it. By the way, that's the way why Carl Anthony Cowns is in New York, because Minnesota didn't want to pay him and then have to pay Anthony Edwards to Max, both of those guys' max contracts. I think what he's saying is we would do it under really certain circumstances. If Giannis was here, F and A right, we would have given him a contract extension. You know, if Paul George will be off the books next year, you might even be able to flip him next year. His contract is two years shorter than uh Jalen Brown's. For reasons I still don't understand. We've heard a lot of rumors, and maybe someday we'll find out they didn't want to be in the Jalen Brown business anymore. It's as simple as that. An NBA finals MVP, by the way. 100%, man. They don't win the finals, but they don't win the finals two years ago without him. Is he as good as Jason Tanum? No, he's not. Is he a top 10 NBA player? Probably not. He's probably in the like if he is, he's probably eight or nine. So yeah, that kind of when we talk, I we've talked about this. I think when it maybe not, but I know I thought a little bit. Yeah, you with these guys getting supermax contracts who are not top five NBA players or all first team NBA players, it becomes a problem. You don't think I mean, I mean, the the the Sixers are having a party that they could swap out Paul George for Jalen Brown, but they're still gonna have to pay him. So I I think I understand the the financial part of it. Like, yeah, if we had Giannis and J JT uh uh Jason Tatum, FNA, right, we'd we'd we'd figure out the max contract and make it work. But by the way, the reason another reason why they probably didn't want to throw in assets because if you do have two guys making 70% of your salary cap, those young guys, you know, you make you make final bail, you can knock Bailey Sharon and all, and you guys Hugo Gonzalez all you want. Those are guys that are contributing that are on rookie contracts. Eric, the cheap labor, and you got to fill out your roster. Look what my Miami doesn't have a roster right now because they got two guys making money. Well, not really two guys, but you know what I mean.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So I don't know why they did it. I think the strange I don't know if they just said this is the best we're going to do, which I find very hard to believe. But if you believe the quote unquote experts, like the media guys who were tied in, the traffic wasn't nearly uh uh the surrounding Brown the way I thought it would. There were not a lot of teams apparently in on them.

SPEAKER_00

Well, because they damaged them. They it was damaged goods. They they shopped them around to everyone who would listen, so they didn't keep it on the down low. They they shopped them around and everyone knew they were trying to get rid of them, so they they there weren't great off. But they were gonna do it. They should have done it the all-star break last year for crying out loud. That's when they should have done it. Well, the guy was playing great.

SPEAKER_01

Turns out my idea that they could have swapped him for like um Dylan Harper and DeAndre Fox's really bad contract. Uh, yeah, that was never that was never happening. So I don't know, man. It's uh it's depressing. I don't think I do think though, the thing, and this is Boston sports, and it's probably New York too, but Boston does the ranking it as like, is this one of the worst trades in Boston sports history is ridiculous. You know, I like Jalen Brown a lot, and he's beloved, he's such a good person in the community. They did not trade away John Larry Wright last week. They did not trade away John Hadelchick last week. We need to settle down a little bit with this.

SPEAKER_00

One thing they didn't do last week, Brian, you'll have to explain this move to me a little bit as well, is the Mitchell Robinson deal. Um kind of I I don't know if I was puzzled by it. I'll take it from a Nick perspective, real quick, as a fan. I knew all along they weren't gonna re-sign him. Like I under and I understand it too. I do. He doesn't play, Brian. He's hurt all the time.

SPEAKER_02

No.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so when you want to, when you're on that, again, you want to tell me the second aprons and all that stuff, like you have to make tough decisions. And so what they do, they let him go, and then they went and signed Andre Drummond, who's not half as good as Mitchell Robinson is, potential wise, but it's a big body, so I like I totally get it. Obviously, he was a Connecticut kid, so I I like that aspect of it. But I understand you know when the Yankees used to get in this trouble. Uh, a lot of teams used to get in this trouble, paying players on past performance. He got you the ring. Thank you. Goodbye. I I'm just I'm not emotional about it. I like Mitchell Robinson. I like how he came out the other day, by the way, and he finally explained what happened with his hand.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He's talked, he's been very open about his mental well-being and some of the health issues he's had over the last year and his own personal wellness. So I give him credit for that as well. But um, I don't know. I just was kind of surprised by the move by the Celtics because uh Mitchell Robinson to me is more of a finishing piece, so that's why I was puzzled with them, knowing that Brown was possibly on the move. I don't understand the Mitchell Robinson sign.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, I do get it. I think um they had a couple things going on there. They really needed size in the worst way. They played Neimus Kative last year was a great story as their starting center. Came out of nowhere. He was a two-way player a couple years ago, and he had a great year. A little rough in the playoffs. They need, but he was they needed some, and Brad Stevens said this in the end of the season uh press conference, not yesterday. They badly needed size, they badly needed ring protection. I like it because I understand it's not a huge, it's hard to believe the three years 47 is not a huge amount of money in the world we live in, but in the NBA, not a huge amount of money. I think it's a perfect, really good signing for them because he doesn't have to do anything except do what he does well. Play defense and get a that's a ton of rebounds. Um, he doesn't let you go play five out with the Celtics like to do a couple years ago when you could send all five year guys out on the perimeter, everyone can hit a shot. And you're right, he's not great offensively, he can't hit a foul shot, and he has trouble staying healthy. If you team him and let Kimakita and let those two guys sort of split the center position, I think that's a really nice, solid move by the Celtics. You know, play if you can get 20 m minutes out of him and knock on Woody's healthy in the playoffs. And the Celtic's gonna be the playoffs people. Celtics are gonna still be a pretty damn good team.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh, I think that's a good signing for them. And I think for the Knicks, yeah, I mean the Sacred April is you don't want to get on the Sacred Apron, it cripples you. So the Knicks are gonna have to let some guys go. So they made a choice. They uh re-signs Landry Shamit, and they probably and plus the other thing, Eric, and I'm not trying to go on a rant here. If you've been following the last couple of weeks between the trades or just the signings, big men, even just average big men, are getting freaking paid.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, no, they are. And the other thing, too, about the Knicks, Brian, is uh he sucked it up for his team now, but you're gonna probably see Jalen Brunson get a new contract.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So that's the other thing you got to think about. And I know you could resign your own guys, and I'm not sure of the specifics, but Jalen Brunson's looking, guys. I took one for the team the last couple years for us to try to get to the promised land. So why don't we tear up my deal and give me a new one? So I think that's gonna be part of the things the Knicks have to think about going on.

SPEAKER_01

And they'll have to make a decision on another another cat contract because that seems like that was just signed a few years ago. But they before you know it, that's up. And again, that's one of the reasons he's he was available to the Knicks. Yep, 100%. So we will see. I think they'll still be a good team. Uh it's probably not a championship team, but uh I'm I'm I'm moving, I have to move on because I can't beat my head on the wall anymore. Sorry.

SPEAKER_00

No, I get it. I get it. All right, we're gonna take a timeout. Speaking of beating our heads against the wall, our baseball teams have uh given us plenty to uh beat our heads against the wall over the last couple weeks. Uh, we'll talk about that. Brian's got some birthdays down the road and all that more coming up on the EDBC Bob.

SPEAKER_01

All right, remember this summer, if you're gonna shop from home because you're a little busy, you've got vacation plans. Remember, Instacart can not only help you with uh, you know, stuff around the house, groceries and all that stuff, but if you're planning a beach vacation, whether it's just stuff to take, you know, maybe you want to go to Walmart and get some kids, you know, some beach toys for the kids or just stock up on you know stuff for a picnic. Instacart's awesome. The Instacart Plus program is good for families because family members can shop on the same account and use the same cart and get everyone get all their uh stuff on one delivery and divvy it out. So, yeah, free delivery, and I order over 35 bucks with Instacart, reduce service fees, and you get some top perks from top brands, like bonus points from Delta Airlines with every dollar you spend, and exclusive benefits, benefits for Chase credit card members. So remember this summer, show from home and save with Instacart.

SPEAKER_00

You know, Brian, I have to watch the Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox for my job. I I have to do that.

SPEAKER_01

I understand.

SPEAKER_00

So uh in and even last week when I was at the Travelers Tournament, I didn't watch a play of baseball. I didn't have to. I was at the golf. I didn't have to go back and do the 11 o'clock news with the Yankees, Red Sox, Mets highlights. We have other people doing that. But I got I gave out a great laugh last night because I see Brian folks on social media. I'm sitting at my desk, I'm editing stuff. I got all my windows open on my computer. And Brian is bitching on social media about the usage of the Mets bullpen. And I said to myself, Brian, why the hell are you even watching?

SPEAKER_01

Well, I was watching the soccer and that turned into a disaster. So I flipped on the Mets. Uh it was a close game. Yep. And uh there wasn't a hell of a lot of it was like one of those things where it's too late to start something new because I won't watch it, I'll fall asleep. Yep. I was there, and it's the Braves who I hate. So I guess there's some Red Sox Yankees things where there's a couple games that even if you suck to the like no team has sucked before, you want to beat that team. Yep. And they're in their in the first place team with their ballpark a quarter full. Um that's another great sports town. I just got a little into it. I'm sorry. I can't get I can't I can't help myself.

SPEAKER_00

I just I got a good chuckle out of it because I said, I know why why I'm watching it. And it was funny, I cut those highlights three different times. You have no good excuse. I cut those highlights three different times before I pushed them too, because and it's funny, I was watching the game and I had the the Mets on the top TV, and then I had a couple other things. I'm like, and I said to myself, Soto is due to hit one out. And when he goes to three and one in the count, and I said, Oh my god, this guy's gonna throw him one down the pipe and he's gonna hit it out. And sure enough, he just kept it fair. And then you're right, the idea they brought Devin Williams in to pitch. Again, we're getting into minutia here, but just goes to what our teams do. The guy threw 22 or 22. 27 pitches the night before, and you're bringing him in when you got Luke Weaver who's on a heater right now. It made no sense. So I totally I laugh because you are a hundred percent right. Because we always say we feel like we know more than these freaking baseball nerds and general managers or whatever we do. And they make the move and it blows up on their face and they almost lose. It's just yeah, but I can't spend how do you said that? You go from joy to almost the worst loss of the year. That's you know what I mean?

SPEAKER_01

Like you're and that would be saying something with the almost worst loss of the year. So uh, but they're out of Atlanta. They they split with Atlanta. Atlanta's been a been a bit Atlanta has sort of fallen off. They had a terrible June, but they're still in first place by a little bit. And the Mets are going nowhere fast. And uh we'll get into that in a couple weeks from now when the Mets start to find out who the Mets are selling. Uh and meanwhile, you know, your team is uh, I don't know what they're doing tonight, but your team's not has its own issues and a lot of them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they're losing 2-0 in the third inning to the Tampa Bay Rays. Uh that can't hit. Uh last night they got eight solid innings from Camp Schlittler, who is one of the best young pitchers at baseball, but definitely he's he's got some some guts, as they say. Uh Carlos Rodan out with elbow injury. This is the second time he's had an elbow this year. So I don't know if you'll see him again. Giancarlo Stanton, he's not even running right now. I don't think you're gonna see Judge for at least another five, six weeks, Brian. In the house, I think he's gonna be August 20th type of return. So I don't know what they're gonna do. You know, again, that we can sit there. We've done been doing it all year, Brian. You know, beginning of the year, Jose Caballero is your shortstop. He has a huge night last night because he's playing shortstop. But the Yankees and their general manager are so stubborn. You know, Anthony Volpe grew up in New Jersey, idolized Derek Jeters, so he's got to be the shortstop. That's it.

unknown

That's it.

SPEAKER_01

They're gonna keep running out and running it out and running it out.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it drives you absolutely nuts. Uh much like the Mets, the Yankees overvalued some of their prospects. Dominguez is not a very average player, got a little pop. He can run. He's a butcher in the outfield. Spencer Jones, they refuse. Spencer Jones is our Ronnie Mauricio, Brian. He shows flashes and then they send him down. I I don't understand why they're sending him down. Judges out, stands out, put him in the outfield, and you're playing every day. That's true.

SPEAKER_01

I gotta watch Britt Betty every day. Well, yeah, I mean again.

SPEAKER_00

Just you don't understand. And the moves that these teams make. I mean, the Yankees and their bullpen, they sent down one of their relievers who was pitching really well, and they keep Jake Bird, who's got a five ERA. I just uh they both had options. So we're we're both in similar boats besides the records. The Yankees are 10 games over 500, the Mets are 15 under, the American League stinks, so the Yankees can just kind of play 500 baseball until Judge gets back, Brian. That's all they gotta do. That's all they got.

SPEAKER_01

He'll be in the playoffs. Um but again, it's a lot of things that we've seen before with them, except the pitching has been worse than we usually get from the Yankees. Uh, you know, uh Cole's been not good. You know, Ron Down before Ron, even before he got hurt. I mean, Slitler, I don't want to screw up his name. Obviously, I know he got bad at it. What was it last week? He got pounded a little bit, came back and had a nice game last night. But I don't, you know, so I think there's I don't know, people are waiting to see. I don't know. You just told me.

SPEAKER_00

So Ryan, well, I'll tell you right now, Ryan Weathers was hurt all of last year. He's pitched the most innings he's ever pitched in his life. He's hit a wall, he's given up four runs, five runs. Start now. Will Warren is another kid, a young kid who's had the most innings he's pitched in his life over the last two years. And you're gonna see the usage that you know, they they gotta hope that Freed comes back in the next couple weeks. And again, like I said, played 500 balls.

SPEAKER_01

That's it. That's what I was about to say. Like, they're they're gonna pin a lot of their hopes, and then like, oh, Max Fried will be back and he'll just pick it up where he left off. Well, you better freaking hope that happens.

SPEAKER_00

And then you move the other guys to the bullpen, which is respect. And then you know what I want him to do, Brian? I want them to go out. They haven't made a trade like this for a while. And if it costs you Spencer Jones, I don't care, do it. I know he's a free agent, I know he's old. He's playing your team tonight. I want Salvatore Perez on the Yankees. That's what I want. I've wanted him on the Yankees for four or five years because he's a clubhouse guy. He's a no-nonsense guy. Uh, he can maybe take some of those Latin players under his wing. Again, you platoon, uh, Austin Wells cannot hit this year. He's back. No, he's been terrible. I mean, it's an we've talked about it on the couple pods. It's an epidemic in baseball, Brian. No one can hit.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I was gonna suggest Lurie Lewis Tarren's would be great for you guys to trade, get trade up for us for them. Let's trade him back to the Yankees. But Salvador Perez is a little bit higher in the uh grand scheme of things than that. Uh uh, I don't think Louis Turrant's ever hit 40 home 48 home runs, as far as I know. So, yeah, that'd be a good offensive upgrade for the Yankees if you can DH him too. I like that idea. Kansas City's having a really rough thing. And I'm that's actually a good trade. You should goddamn it, Eric C, they should let me make a trade occasionally. Move a guy for like a Spencer Jones to someone like that. Kansas City wants to get young and cheaper anyway.

SPEAKER_02

He's never picked up a guy in the back in the back end of his career.

SPEAKER_01

If nothing else, even if you catch him two days a week, he can be DH. You can still hit. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I like that one.

SPEAKER_01

You're better than Brian Cashman.

SPEAKER_00

I would do that in a heartbeat. Just something like that kind of shake things up a little bit. And with your team, Brian, again, so I heard this the other day. You fight, you tell me I I was shocked when I heard this that the the Mets have no interest in trading either of the relievers because they want to try to win next year. I think that's foolish, Brian. I think. I mean, Luke Weaver, I think you get again, it's the case where both of our teams refuse to sell high. They refuse. Weaver Weaver was terrible the second half of last year. No, he's pitching great. He pitched great for the Yankees for two years. But you know how these guys are, Brian. You you sell him right now and kind of rebuild your farm system a little bit. You get two top 100 prospects for him that you gave away in the Peralta trade. You can get back in a trade for Luke Weaver.

SPEAKER_01

And you have to do it. And again, I know the reason why they're saying is because most of these guys, I believe, a I don't want to go through all the names, bore people, but we weaver is one of the few guys in the bullpen that is uh has another year, so is not a control for not that you can most of these guys are going to be free agents. Trade himself that I I couldn't agree more. And I like I wouldn't just I I watched last night. Part of me is like, okay, um I don't want Luke Weaver to go out there and like all of a sudden get have his and I know some his his scoreless streak ended last night.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't want to go out there and like have a five out like a five hit, five run disaster, because I do want him to be moved. Because I think if they're smart, they could get a good return. I don't really trust this David Stearns to get a good trade because he hasn't made one, really made one yet. Yeah. Uh I mean, listen, I can't stand that. That's stupid. Because obviously the weaver trade was very good. Getting AJ Minto was free.

SPEAKER_00

Weaver was a free agent. Weaver was a free agent.

SPEAKER_01

It was a free agent. You're right. Uh Ancient Minto was a free agent. Never mind. Okay, stop it. Never mind. I'm talking about.

SPEAKER_00

No, he hasn't made good trades. Mets are winning 3-0, by the way. Against the street.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't know what happened there, but yeah, there you go.

SPEAKER_00

Seth Lugo. He's another one that, you know, the Kansas City Royals would probably try to trade him.

SPEAKER_01

Would you take Lugo?

SPEAKER_00

I I I the Yankees don't need a starter. They need both of them.

SPEAKER_01

That's what I'm saying. You could, in fact, I mean, you could in theory.

SPEAKER_00

He wants to be a starter.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just gonna say he could be a plug-in starter that he is an insurance guy that you could then he might not like it, but if he could get a wing, he'd be he'd that'd be a got a good guy out of the bullpen in the playoffs.

SPEAKER_00

And then I then I'm hearing today uh the Yankees have talked to Detroit about school. I mean, you you can't go give up your top pro are you gonna give up George Lombard Jr. then?

SPEAKER_01

I wouldn't I I here's the thing, and I didn't think feel this till last year in the playoffs or whatever it was, and he's gonna be free agent this year. I think he's overrated, bro. Let uh Eric and let the Dodgers sign him. Here's my thing with him. That's the thing, same thing I'll uh I have about Blake Snell. I if you're I am f you might be awesome for five innings. If you absolutely cannot pitch beyond the sixth inning, and in Scruples' case, he doesn't seem to want to pitch past the sixth inning. That's a big red flag for me before I go out and sign a guy to that type of money. Let me go sign the Dodgers. I'm 100% on you. And I used to be just the opposite. I thought that'd be a great guy for the Mets to go and build a new pitching rotation around. I can't have a guy that, you know, in a playoff game can't go into the seventh inning. I'm not doing that for that money.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, listen, you look back to Cece Sabathia when he got traded from Cleveland to Milwaukee. The guy was pitching on short rest, coming in in relief to get try to get them to the World Series. Yeah. And last year, School's taking himself out of the game, six six innings, 98, 98 pitches. Like, you got to give him one more there. I mean, come on. That drove me nuts. It drove me nuts. They babied them all year to get to that point. So you're 100% right. I don't want them at these go below four for himself. There's no guarantee you're gonna win, like you said. Just because he throws five shutout innings, you're gonna lose the game two to one.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I mean stealing your bullpen to do the heavy lifting for you late in the game against good teams.

SPEAKER_00

Ridiculous. So I well, we'll we'll see what happens. The Red Sox also, we don't want to neglect them. They got to think about what they're gonna do. They have some younger players that haven't panned out for them either. They go trade a Raldo's Chapman, you know, someone like that. We'll get something. They don't they don't really have much else to trade.

SPEAKER_01

Jaron Duran of somebody who thinks he can benefit from a change of season.

SPEAKER_00

All right, have you looked at Jarr Duran's numbers this season, Brian?

SPEAKER_01

Of course they have, because I thought he might be a Met guy, a trade candidate before the season started. Yeah, I've seen him.

SPEAKER_00

It's terrible. He's hitting under 200.

SPEAKER_01

No, it's awful. But again, I I again that's why I say maybe it'll be one of those geniuses. Well, we'll get him here in our thing, and we'll give him a fresh season, fresh change, you know, fresh start, and he'll be he'll be just fine. I'm gonna take that gamble though ahead.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's hitting 197. He does have 13 home runs. I like Abreu better in the right fielder, to be honest with you, than I than I do with Rand. You know, uh Contreras, the first baseman, someone's got some pops, got 20 home runs. He's someone that I know they talked about, but so that's the game. Trevor Story never plays, you know. There's not much there. So we'll see what happens. But anyway, uh we take one more time out, Brian. We've got a couple things we want to talk about. Brian put Larry David's name on the mark down here. So I'm interested to see what he's watching. Brian, I've watched so many shows right now, by the way. We're gonna have to take a minute to talk about that. I've seen so many shows in the last few weeks. Uh, we'll talk about all that more in the EDV test.

SPEAKER_01

All right, don't forget about uh excuse me, don't forget about Oswell when it's time to take a nap or take a nap or just need a good night's sleep. Oswell knows the power of a good night's sleep. It's been their driving force behind what they do since they launched. And a reminder, how affordable it is is uh Oswell. Well, the Queen's Size Oswald mattress, simply called the Oswell Queen, still starts as low as $350. It's a pretty darn good price for a queen size mattress. SPEAKER_00

Both of our teams, the Yankees are winning three to two now. Ben Rice at a three-run home. We're Mets are winning three to two now. So it's got to be.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that three-nothing lead last about 36 seconds.

SPEAKER_00

So I want to say real quick, I uh I know we're running tight on time here. We got well, we got a little bit of time. Uh I finished the Bear. Did you watch the Bear, Brian?

SPEAKER_01

I never got into the bear. I I couldn't do it.

SPEAKER_00

Uh I tried to refinale was this week. Watched that. It was uh was it eight episodes? The first two and a half, did not care for. Um it's like reading a book, you know, you just got to stick with it and hope for the payoff. You got the payoff at the end. Yeah, I think I told you I watched the four seasons. I've watched uh what else have I watched? Anything you've been watching out there? I'm trying to think. The Larry David thing we'll talk about in a second. I have not given that a chance yet. Brian, your thoughts?

SPEAKER_01

Seen some social media I've seen two episodes. Um Love Larry David, Love Seinfeld. I think Curb is probably even better than Seinfeld. This show sucks real bad. I mean, I watched the trailer and I give it a try, man. I tried. I couldn't make it through the first episode, and I saw clips of the second one, and it wasn't much better. I don't want to tell you, man.

SPEAKER_00

It's sketch comedy, right? In different periods of uh American.

SPEAKER_01

It's like he plays favorite, like he plays like Thomas Jefferson, or he's playing the guy that's on the bell bus with Rosa Parks, and he's making like he's pulling out like stand-up routines. Yeah. I don't want to like there's one that's on social media that encapsulates it and uh encapsulates it much better than I can describe. It's the uh Rob Reiner, who won the shortly before he died. Uh Jimmy Kimball as well. Yeah, Jimmy Kimball. Watch that one if you think it's cup of T go. Uh I thought it was a little like we're regurgitating old jokes, and we're sort of just putting it here. And I love Larry David, but you know, he's made some really crappy movies, so he's got some duds in him. And look, much like Brad Stevens, who's a great general manager, Larry's a great comedic genius. You can not every strike, not every pitch is a strike. You know what I'm saying? I don't I'm using way too many stupid metaphors here, but I think you understand what I'm saying.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, one thing to listeners, if you're a sports fan, I think you should give a listen, Brian. I don't know if you've seen this podcast. This was SportsCenter, hosted by Rich Eisen. Yes. Uh they have six episodes. I've listened to the ones of Chris Berman, Dan Patrick, and uh Craig Kilborn.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I think Craig Kilborn back.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, those are the three I listened to. Craig Kilborn, by the way, is shot. He is uh his memory's gone. I don't know if he was taking a few too many bong hits over the last 25 years, but he sounds like he's 80. And I think he's in his late 50s, but funny still. But uh interesting just because that time of our life growing up, Brian SportsCenter was, you know, pop talking about pop culture, the Seinfelds, the you know, this this is Sports Center commercials they talk. They do a great job. Uh Rich Eisen, I heard him in an interview with Mad Dog, I think a couple weeks ago, talking about how they were able to use the the archives of ESPN to kind of intertwine with these interviews. Did a great job. Really good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I'd like to I would like to see that because yeah, you know, back in the day it was either Sports Center, either late at night, first thing in the morning while you're getting up and ready. Uh sometimes both. And that's not where we're living now. We we can find out stuff. We can like right now, we can see the medicine worlds are in fact in the bottom of a second. So that's kind of cool. I like Rich Eisen, I like some of the guys you mentioned that sounds something I will dig into.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, they tell some great stories. So uh Brian, you got a couple of birthdays. I'm not gonna lie, I did see the first one you have on your list here. It's been over social media a little bit. All right. But uh, take it away. We've got two minutes here. Go ahead.

SPEAKER_01

All right, Ringo Star, uh the Beatles celebrating the birthday this week. Uh Ringo, still he's still tourist, by the way.

SPEAKER_00

He's still tourism is all coming around here, I think.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, Ringo Star is all the band. Check it out. You might like it. Ringo celebrating the birthday, Eric, is he 78, 79? I'm seeing, sorry, 76, 79, or 86. 86. He is 86. We always mention, we often mention the Sopranos again as one of the shows from like 30 years ago, 20 years ago that we love. Uh E.D. Falco, who uh played Mrs. You know, was a huge figure of huge throwing that role, Carmelo. Yep. Um, she has his birthday this week. I was I had a hard time guessing this one. Um, and you might too. I know the answer though now. Uh is she 60, 63, or 67?

SPEAKER_00

Let's say 63.

SPEAKER_01

She has 63. There you go. Uh couple more here. All right. Uh uh, and both these guys, uh, well, I won't say it till the end. All right, we're gonna start with Sly Stallone. Sly's been around for a while. We know that he's still.

SPEAKER_00

What is going on with him, Brian? I've seen him on some places, and he just does not look I don't know what's going on there. That's all I'm gonna say.

SPEAKER_01

Well, when we get to when you find out, let's answer that question by maybe answering his age. Yeah, go ahead. All right, and it's Sly. I can't believe Rocky turns 50 this year. The first Rocky. It's that's a clue. I'll give you a clue. Is Sly turning 70, 75, or 80?

SPEAKER_00

I say 75.

SPEAKER_01

He is turning 80.

SPEAKER_00

Oh wow. So he was 30 years old when that came out. Yikes.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so he yeah, he wasn't a spring chicken. He'd been busting around to be kind of like like a bit of a you know trying to hang on. Yeah. All right, we always love 80s TV shows, especially TV shows, and we love football. This guy did both. Uh Fred Dreyer, great player, all pro defensive man with the Rams back in the 70s. Then was a we'd never get this anymore. We should get this guy's like Jim Brown and Fred Dreyer. Nobody goes into acting after football anymore. But Fred Dreyer did it and made Hunter, one of those great cop shows of the 80s, and also, you know, a couple times had some appears as uh as a guy in your profession, as a sportscaster on Cheers.

SPEAKER_02

Yep.

SPEAKER_01

All right, so Fred, it's the same. I'm gonna throw you the same numbers. Is Fred Dreyer turning 70, 75, or 80? 80. Correct. They're both he and Sly were blown in the same day.

SPEAKER_00

Wow. Yeah, I've seen some pictures of Sly Lee in some videos, and I I was like, wow, is that AI or is that really what he's looking like, these days?

SPEAKER_01

So we've had some work done. And sometimes that doesn't work, that doesn't age as well as your.

SPEAKER_00

He's had work on the hair, the face. He's done, there's a lot going on there. It's all probably does for sure. God bless him. God bless. So all right. Well, uh, listen, the World Cup is behind us, and it's kind of a kind of a lull in the summer here, Brian, unless you're into the WNBA, which uh I wouldn't even talk about that. Last week I was doing that with Paige Becker's Asian Flood, but we'll hold that for another time. Okay, we'll try to hopefully see what happens with our baseball teams next couple days in the NBA, NFL, all that stuff right around the corner here on the BDC podcast. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

We're getting through the dog, the dog games of summer.

SPEAKER_00

We are all right, I'm Merrick Keys Brian. Till next time, Brian. Say goodbye.

SPEAKER_01

See ya.
