PBS Matters

Episode Ten - Wellbeing and PBS

Paddy Behan & Jo Coulson

Guest - Dr Peter Baker:
Peter is a part-time Senior Lecturer and Chartered Clinical Psychologist. He has many years experience as a clinician working for the NHS, leading to specialist support and intervention services for people with intellectual disabilities who present challenging behaviour. Peter has recently been part of a working group for "Meeting Needs and Reducing Distress."

Peter explains why he became interested in studying wellbeing and that we need to create supportive environments for staff as well as the people we support. It is all discussed that staff wellbeing is not linked to how challenging the person they work with is but the support the organisation give them. Peter discusses how to proactively support wellbeing including:
1. Providing clear expectations of staff
2. Training and supervising staff
3. Using a PBS framework
4. Talking to staff
5. End of shift reviews
6. Informal peer support
