In the mind of many the church is thought to be a human institution, a social arrangement to facilitate the interests and mission of like-minded people. Good as this may sound, the revelation we have in the Bible goes beyond this. The origin of the church actually lies in the desire of God to have a people of His own through which He will accomplish His redemptive plan for the rest of the world (Exod. 19:1-8; Deut. 7:6). In a both strategic and as well as eternal sense, the church is God’s instrument for displaying His manifold wisdom, to dislodge Satan, the prince of this world and to establish His Kingdom here on earth (Matthew 16:18; Eph. 3:10).
What is the Church? Matthew 16:13-19
The Church is an “ekklesia” a separate and new community of people created by Jesus Christ for Himself (Matthew 16:18). People that is built “on this rock” the confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16). People who through faith in Christ have established personal relationship with Jesus after they have been redeemed from the life of sin, washed in the blood of Jesus Christ and have been baptized in the name of Christ (Acts 2:37-38).
