to take a little bit of a break from the book of John, and instead, I want us to take a look at this idea of righteous influence. 00:01:58.319 --> 00:02:06.000 We all have the power of influence, and our goal as believers in Jesus is really to have the right kind of influence. 00:02:06.480 --> 00:02:10.080 I want to give you a definition of righteous influence. 00:02:10.159 --> 00:02:12.159 It really comes from Jonathan Edwards. 00:02:12.240 --> 00:02:15.759 He's an old, old school uh theologian and preacher. 00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:22.000 And Jonathan Edwards had a definition of righteous influence, and I kind of paraphrased it for you this morning. 00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:35.120 It should be on the screen here, and it's just that the spirit that is at work in a people is plainly observed so as to convince others that Christ is the Son of God, died to save sinners. 00:02:35.360 --> 00:02:41.439 We are in great need of him, and our affections for him and God increases. 00:02:41.759 --> 00:02:44.560 That's what righteous influence will do. 00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:46.719 I want to do a couple of things. 00:02:46.800 --> 00:02:54.000 So, first, I want to demonstrate to you this idea of righteous influence by highlighting three characters from the Bible. 00:02:54.240 --> 00:02:59.280 Then, after that, I want to give you four characteristics of righteous influence. God, first two people that God create. 00:03:34.960 --> 00:03:37.360 He set them in the Garden of Eden, but they've sinned. 00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:46.719 They're cast out of the garden, and now they're living out their life, in a sense, with this separation from God because of sin. 00:03:46.879 --> 00:03:52.240 And so they've now had uh two sons, Cain and Abel, two names you you probably recognize. 00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:56.159 And this picks up with Cain and Abel here in verse 2. 00:03:56.479 --> 00:04:00.319 Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 00:04:00.560 --> 00:04:11.120 In the course of time, Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord, but Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. 00:04:11.360 --> 00:04:18.319 The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. 00:04:19.120 --> 00:04:26.480 When we examine the possible causes of why God looked with favor on Abel's offering and not Cain's, I think we can make a couple of safe assumptions. 00:04:26.560 --> 00:04:37.680 Well, one of them is that Abel, by giving God some of the first of what he had, was saying, God, I understand that everything is from you. 00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:42.560 And I'm just demonstrating it by giving back some of the first that you've given me. 00:04:43.600 --> 00:05:00.959 I think we can understand that if Abel has that kind of knowledge, if that's the kind of philosophy, that the attitude that he has, then I think it's safe to assume that Abel is rightly aligned with God, that his heart is rightly aligned with how he's supposed to be living. 00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:08.399 The point in that is if our hearts are aligned with God, we will be the kind of righteous influence we ought to be. 00:05:08.639 --> 00:05:15.199 And if it's not, and if we stay there, obviously we'll never be the kind of influence God commands us to be. 00:05:16.480 --> 00:05:21.360 Author Warren Wersby's written several texts and a theologian. 00:05:21.680 --> 00:05:30.399 He describes a false righteousness as this false righteousness cloaks its sins in the garment of religious activities. 00:05:31.040 --> 00:05:37.519 That's kind of the picture we get from Cain, just kind of a religious activity of here's my offering, it's not the first, but it's something. 00:05:38.079 --> 00:05:39.519 Sometimes we can do that ourselves. 00:05:39.600 --> 00:05:43.120 We can show up to church and we can go to Sunday school and Bible studies and this and that. 00:05:43.279 --> 00:05:46.319 And sometimes it's just false righteousness. 00:05:46.560 --> 00:05:55.040 True righteousness, on the other hand, aligns with God in our worship, in our lives, and in our influence. 00:05:56.319 --> 00:06:00.720 The second character of influence that I want us to look at it comes from the New Testament. 00:06:00.800 --> 00:06:06.480 It's kind of way in the back, and it's not a name that maybe you're going to recognize. 00:06:06.560 --> 00:06:12.079 It's a name that pops up in several places in the New Testament, but certainly he's not listed as one of those pillars of faith. 00:06:12.160 --> 00:06:20.639 He's not listed in Hebrews chapter 11 as kind of that faith hall of fame guy, but it's someone that I think we can we can learn from. 00:06:21.279 --> 00:06:24.560 Turn to almost the end of the New Testament there. 00:06:24.639 --> 00:06:27.439 It's way back in Colossians, and this is a letter that Paul is writing. 00:06:27.600 --> 00:06:29.680 Paul's an apostle of Jesus. 00:06:29.839 --> 00:06:31.680 He was converted after Jesus' ascension. 00:06:31.759 --> 00:06:32.800 Jesus appears to Paul. 00:06:32.959 --> 00:06:36.399 Paul converts his life, and he writes a lot of the New Testament. 00:06:36.639 --> 00:06:41.920 Paul says this about this name that no homeschoolers are naming their kids. 00:06:42.240 --> 00:06:45.680 It's chapter 4, verses 7 through 8. 00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:49.360 Titicus will tell you all the news about me. 00:06:49.519 --> 00:06:54.639 He's a dear brother, a faithful minister, and fellow servant in the Lord. 00:06:55.040 --> 00:07:03.120 I'm sending him to you for the express purpose that you may know about our circumstances and that he may encourage your hearts. 00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:07.680 Paul spells out the influence of Tichicus. 00:07:08.079 --> 00:07:10.319 First he says, well, he's a fellow servant. 00:07:10.560 --> 00:07:25.120 What we get from that is, and if we do a little study, Acts, Ephesians, 2 Timothy, Titus, all letters that Paul has written, all of them mention Titicus as being a worker for the gospel. 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:30.240 All say that he was involved in the spreading of that good news that Jesus saves. 00:07:30.480 --> 00:07:32.639 So Paul certainly would call him a fellow servant. 00:07:32.800 --> 00:07:34.639 He also calls him a dear brother. 00:07:34.879 --> 00:07:42.800 I think what we get from that is it's someone Paul can count on, somebody that's kind of been steadfast and with him, but also somebody Paul likes, likes to spend time with him. 00:07:43.040 --> 00:07:45.199 Finally, he calls him a faithful minister. 00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:49.839 Now, for Paul, if you know anything about Paul, Paul's not going to use those words lightly. 00:07:49.920 --> 00:07:53.120 And for Paul to have said you're a faithful minister, you've really done something. 00:07:53.279 --> 00:07:58.480 So I think what we get from that is Titicus has 00:08:23.920 This is chapter 12, and the person we're talking about is Lazarus. 00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:28.879 Now, the last time I preached, I preached on Lazarus and Jesus bringing him out of the the power that raised Lazarus from the dead is available to all of us. 00:08:43.200 --> 00:08:47.279 Here's the difference, by the way, between Lazarus and us. 00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:58.480 One, Lazarus, my guess is Lazarus is sitting on his deathbed, and he's probably thinking, you know, Jesus does raise from the dead. 00:08:58.559 --> 00:09:02.559 I've heard some stories, maybe I saw, Jews found out that Jesus was there and came not only because of him, but also to see Lazarus, whom he raised from the dead. 00:09:44.879 --> 00:09:48.240 So the chief priest made plans to kill Lazarus as well. 00:09:48.480 --> 00:09:55.200 For on account of him, many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him. 00:09:56.559 --> 00:10:03.279 It's a quick mention, but I think a profound statement on the impact that Lazarus was having based on what was done to him. 00:10:03.759 --> 00:10:08.399 What happens to us has influence if we let it. 00:10:09.120 --> ghost. 00:10:16.960 --> 00:10:23.919 I think Lazarus was just simply saying, as people were continuing to come, Lazarus was just saying, Hey, let me tell you what's been done to me. 00:10:24.159 --> 00:10:25.519 And let me tell you who did it. 00:10:26.080 --> 00:10:28.799 That's what I think Lazarus' influence was. 00:10:30.879 --> 00:10:34.080 Now, what does all that have to do with influence? 00:10:34.159 --> 00:10:37.840 And you may be asking, well, Wade, what does that have to do with me and my influence? 00:10:37.919 --> 00:10:39.200 What does that look like? 00:10:39.519 --> 00:10:50.320 Well, the reason I use those three names, names that maybe you've heard of, but aren't necessarily the first ones that you think of related to influence from the Bible, is just to remind us. 00:10:50.480 --> 00:10:57.039 I think more often than not, God uses the little known and the no-named to have influence. 00:10:57.840 --> 00:10:59.679 Really, that's just each one of us. understand that that idea of anonymous obedience, if you will, no one really knowing us, but we maintained obedience for a long time and demonstrated for a long time what our belief is. 00:11:27.919
