00:04:36.879 --> 00:04:38.000 Cultural erosion. 00:04:38.160 --> 00:04:43.519 We've kind of eroded the authority structures in our in our culture, and that's not for your good, okay? 00:04:43.680 --> 00:04:44.959 And so let me give you the context. 00:04:45.040 --> 00:04:46.720 Paul's writing to the Christians in Rome. 00:04:46.879 --> 00:04:57.680 Rome was not a Christian city, it's a very pagan city run by godless people who begin to persecute Christians, and they're saying, Hey, these people, now I don't believe you should, let me just put my cards on the table. 00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:00.319 I don't think that whatever government does, you should submit to. 00:05:00.399 --> 00:05:03.600 There's a time and a place for civil disobedience, but that's a different sermon. 00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:09.920 Paul's writing to these people and saying, Hey, you can't just because you don't like something that authority does, you can't say, Well, we're Christians. 00:05:10.079 --> 00:05:11.120 This doesn't apply to us. 00:05:11.279 --> 00:05:11.600 Okay. 00:05:11.920 --> 00:05:14.560 And so, Romans chapter 13, I'll start reading verse one. 00:05:14.879 --> 00:05:22.160 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there's no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:25.839 Therefore, whoever resists the authorities, resist what God has appointed. 00:05:26.000 --> 00:05:28.480 And those who resist will incur judgment. 00:05:28.800 --> 00:05:32.720 Verse 3 for rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. 00:05:32.879 --> 00:05:35.040 Would you have no fear of the one who's in authority? 00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:34.720 Because God wants you to be now stay with me because some of you heard that and you just took a step back, like, hey, easy. 00:06:34.800 --> 00:06:37.600 That sounds like it's trauma-inducing or whatever. 00:06:37.759 --> 00:06:38.319 No, no, no. 00:06:38.399 --> 00:06:39.360 Stay with me, okay? 00:06:39.519 --> 00:06:43.040 Why does why does the Bible say that subjection is God's design for everyone? 00:06:43.199 --> 00:06:51.279 Because God wants you to be a powerfully resourced person who understands how authority works and has authority in your life, on your life. 00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:52.480 And see, here's the catch. 00:06:52.560 --> 00:06:55.199 I'm going to say it here and we'll end on it this morning as well. 00:06:55.360 --> 00:06:58.959 To be a person of authority, you have to be under authority. 00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:00.959 And so we we think exact opposite. 00:07:01.040 --> 00:07:02.560 We think throw off all authority structures. 00:07:02.639 --> 00:07:03.920 Who are you to tell me what to do? 00:07:04.079 --> 00:07:07.120 It's my body, it's my money, it's my this, my whatever. 00:07:07.279 --> 00:07:16.560 And so what happens, you end up on a place of isolation that is very anxiety-producing because you don't understand that subjection is God's design for everyone. 00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:31.600 And I want to I want to challenge the way you think about subjection or submission right from the start, because when you submit to the authorities that are over your life, you're increasing your capacity by increasing the number of people who trust you, are working for your good, and will come to your aid. 00:07:31.759 --> 00:07:32.800 Let me say that again. 00:07:32.959 --> 00:07:47.279 When you submit and you subject yourself to the authorities in your life, then you're increasing your capacity and you're increasing the number of people that are working for your good who trust you and will come to your defense, come to your aid. 00:07:47.439 --> 00:07:51.680 Now, on the other side of the coin, when you reject authority, you're saying, I got it. 00:07:51.839 --> 00:07:53.439 I can do it all by myself. 00:07:53.759 --> 00:08:02.879 Sounds good and feels good in the moment, but ultimately you'll have to do it all by yourself because no one trusts you and no one comes to your aid. 00:08:03.040 --> 00:08:09.199 This is one of the reasons there's so much anxiety in our culture today, is because you have the power, but you do not have the authority. 00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:16.240 And power, which is responsibility without authority, which is capacity, is the birthplace of the impostor in us. 00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:17.680 Let me say that again. 00:08:17.839 --> 00:08:18.959 To have power. 00:08:19.279 --> 00:08:21.199 You got to ask, here's a simple question. 00:08:21.360 --> 00:08:24.079 Would you rather be in charge or under authority? 00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:11.200 Is it gonna be terror or is it gonna be peace? 00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:15.279 Recently I asked a guy and he said, Any opioid I can get my hands on. 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:20.559 And I spit coffee all over my desk and I said, You are so refreshing, you could actually change. 00:09:20.720 --> 00:09:22.159 And he goes, I'm not gonna lie. 00:09:22.240 --> 00:09:23.279 And I said, You know what? 00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:27.759 Don't lie, I won't lie, and a beautiful collision will happen, and this will be great. 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:30.159 And he said, Okay, all right. 00:09:30.399 --> 00:09:39.840 Because see, he has subjected himself to the addiction for so long that his world has shrunk down to all he thinks about is how to get more pills. 00:09:40.159 --> 00:09:41.600 And I just asked a simple question. 00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:44.960 I said, Do you think God created you to live in a world that's that small? 00:09:45.519 --> 00:09:50.000 And he said, I steal, I lie, I lie to my wife, I lie to my boss. 00:09:50.240 --> 00:09:55.759 I said, Yeah, but see, here's the thing: the world that where you can control everything, it's getting it's small and it's getting smaller. 00:09:55.919 --> 00:09:57.600 And God created you to live in a big world. 00:09:57.679 --> 00:10:00.080 What I didn't say was stop taking opioids. 00:10:00.559 --> 00:10:02.000 Now, do I think it should stop? 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:03.360 Absolutely. 00:10:04.080 --> 00:10:10.159 But see, he subjected his whole life to his addiction, and so it shrunk down to the size of his addiction. 00:10:10.320 --> 00:10:14.399 See, many people wonder why their life is so anxiety-producing, and oftentimes it's simple. 00:10:14.559 --> 00:10:19.279 You live apart from God's design for your life when it comes to subjection and submission. 00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:20.960 The Greek word, you said what do you mean?
