that's prone to long answers, and so I love this part of the Bible. 00:03:51.840 --> 00:03:55.280 They ask him one question, and that dude goes on for a chapter and a half. 00:03:55.599 --> 00:03:59.280 I mean just like, okay, all right, oh man. 00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:01.919 Uh, but what you'll see is the gospel fluency, all right? 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:05.439 And so I'm gonna start reading Acts chapter six, starting verse eight. 00:04:05.599 --> 00:04:10.000 And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people. 00:04:10.240 --> 00:04:24.160 Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the freedmen, as it was called, and the Cyrenians and of the Alexandrians and of those of Cilicia and Asia rose up and disputed with Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he was speaking. 00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:30.160 Then they secretly instigated men who said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words Christianity didn't start on July 5th, 1982, about 9:30 at night, when I came to faith. 00:06:59.040 --> 00:06:59.279 Okay. 00:06:59.439 --> 00:07:03.120 It didn't start when you found a church that you liked and you entrusted your kids to. 00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:04.800 Christianity is historical. 00:07:04.879 --> 00:07:13.040 And one of the uh we believe this, and one of the ways we flesh out that we believe this, that is historical and personal, but before it's personal, it's historical. 00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:20.240 One of the ways that we demonstrate uh our understanding of this is that one of the core classes that we teach here is a class on Wednesday night. 00:07:20.319 --> 00:07:30.000 We have midweek classes that meet in the building over there, uh, not during the summer, they meet in the fall for 10 weeks and the spring for 10 weeks, because we want people to understand the story that God is telling. 00:07:30.079 --> 00:07:32.800 So we teach a core class called the Christian story. 00:07:32.959 --> 00:07:37.199 You have to ask yourself, how well do you know the story of God? 00:07:37.519 --> 00:07:39.360 My story is not the story of God. 00:07:39.600 --> 00:07:44.879 My story finds its place and makes sense only in the context of the story that God is telling. 00:07:44.959 --> 00:07:53.839 And so, in the in the class, the Christian story, this core class we teach uh like every third semester, because we want this understanding in the head and heart of our people. 00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:57.199 It's an overview of the story that God has been telling from the beginning. 00:07:57.360 --> 00:08:02.720 We teach this because we want people to not only know their story, but the story that God's telling, how it fits in. 00:08:02.879 --> 00:08:08.000 God's story is known as the gospel, the good news of Christianity, and it's in only in this story. 00:08:08.160 --> 00:08:12.000 The story that God is telling, the gospel is the only story big enough to live in. 00:08:12.160 --> 00:08:25.360 Now, one of the things that you'll see when you begin to understand, because a lot of you come to church, maybe you're new to church, you're kind of like, hey, if you knew what I was really like, what I'm struggling with, there's no way that you would want me to believe that I can be a part of God's story. 00:08:25.519 --> 00:08:29.680 I would just I would just put one word out there, one name out there, Rahab. 00:08:31.759 --> 00:08:35.679 Now, all the Sunday school vacation Bible school kids were like, Yeah, Rahab, Rahab. 00:08:35.919 --> 00:08:37.759 If you're new to church, you're like, I got nothing, bro. 00:08:37.919 --> 00:08:40.240 Rahab, that that sounds like a crazy name. 00:08:40.399 --> 00:08:45.279 Rahab was a harlot, which is the Bible word for. 00:08:46.159 --> 00:08:48.480 Yes, she liked to spread love all around. 00:08:48.639 --> 00:08:50.159 Keep hope alive, amen. 00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:58.720 Uh, and so in the story of God, in one of the genealogies of Jesus, Rahab is listed as one of the people that God used, that's involved in God's story. 00:08:58.799 --> 00:09:06.000 Here's what I'm saying: none of you has excused yourself, none of you sinned so much that God's not gonna, God's kind of said, Hey, you're embarrassing. 00:09:06.159 --> 00:09:07.279 Go stand over there on the wall. 00:09:07.360 --> 00:09:09.840 We're no one's picking you, you just do your best. 00:09:10.000 --> 00:09:10.720 No, no. 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:14.879 The story that God is telling is so big, everyone's invited into it. 00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:23.360 And perhaps the greatest thing that you could do today is to put the pen down and stop trying to write a story that will always be too small for you. just crazy. 00:09:42.080 --> 00:09:43.679 He's like, brothers and bothers, hear me. 00:09:43.840 --> 00:09:46.480 The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he's in Mesopotamia. 00:09:46.559 --> 00:09:48.879 They're like, What's this got to do with anything? 00:09:49.120 --> 00:09:54.559 It's gospel fluent, he's gospel fluent, and there's twofold beauty to gospel fluency, okay? 00:09:54.720 --> 00:09:57.679 Here's here's the twofold beauty of gospel fluency right off the top. 00:09:57.759 --> 00:10:00.960 Number one, questions get answered that were not being asked. 00:10:01.279 --> 00:10:04.240 And secondly, things begin to make sense that didn't before. 00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:09.200 That will happen in this room this morning while I'm preaching, not because of me, but because of the gospel. 00:10:09.360 --> 00:10:14.639 Some of you, questions will get answered that you weren't even asking to be like, oh, yeah, that makes sense. 00:10:14.799 --> 00:10:18.320 And then secondly, things will begin to make sense that didn't make sense before. 00:10:18.559 --> 00:10:22.559 Because God's a God of revelation, and this is the beauty of gospel fluency. 00:10:22.720 --> 00:10:30.399 We're we're reading uh a sermon, a speech that a man gave thousands of years ago, and yet it's applicable in 2023. 00:10:30.559 --> 00:10:30.960 Why? 00:10:31.200 --> 00:10:34.720 Because Christianity is historical before it's personal, all right? 00:10:34.879 --> 00:10:37.919 Here's the second thing we see in the text God is not a God of place. 00:10:38.080 --> 00:10:39.360 Look at verse 3. 00:10:39.679 --> 00:10:49.919 He says, The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia before he lived in Haran, and he said to him, Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you. 00:10:50.080 --> 00:10:52.159 Now, the big charge against Stephen was twofold. 00:10:52.240 --> 00:10:55.200 Remember, I paused, I kind of pumped the brakes and said, Notice this. 00:10:55.360 --> 00:10:57.200 The big charge against Stephen was twofold. 00:10:57.279 --> 00:10:59.279 Number one, he speaks against the temple. 00:10:59.519 --> 00:11:01.279 Secondly, he speaks against the law. 00:11:01.440 --> 00:11:02.879 Here's why this was the big thing. 00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:05.840 In their mind, the temple was where God lived. 00:11:06.080 --> 00:11:10.799 It's kind of like your teacher, you think when you're a little kid, you think your teacher lives at the school. 00:11:11.039 --> 00:11:16.080 Like every once in a while, I see some of you with little kids, if they see me out somewhere, they're like, Oh, Pastor Neil. 00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:20.320 Like this past week, I was having lunch with a friend at Kava in town center down there. 00:11:20.399 --> 00:11:21.519 It's Mediterranean. 00:11:21.600 --> 00:11:22.480 They have hummus. 00:11:22.799 --> 00:11:25.759 Uh, I feel healthy, I'm sure it's not, but I enjoy it. 00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:29.600 And from behind me, I heard somebody go, Pastor Neil, and they had their daughter with them. 00:11:29.759 --> 00:11:34.320 And their daughter was like, What? 00:11:35.759 --> 00:11:37.759 Don't you live at the church? 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.720 And so, because it was awkward, I like making it more awkward. 00:11:40.799 --> 00:11:49.039 I walked over and sat at their table, right beside their daughter, and she was like, And I'm like, Have you ever had lunch with a preacher? 00:11:49.360 --> 00:11:52.240 No, you want me to go back to my table? 00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:06.399 This is the way we feel that way because people back then felt that way. 00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:13.039 They believed, oh my gosh, like when Jesus said, You tear down this temple and I'll raise it back up in three days, he's talking about his body. 00:12:13.120 --> 00:12:14.639 They think he's talking about the building. 00:12:14.799 --> 00:12:18.240 You're gonna tear down the house where God lives, where's God gonna live? 00:12:18.480 --> 00:12:20.240 And so this is the big thing. 00:12:20.320 --> 00:12:22.879 And I'm just saying to you, God is not a God of place. 00:12:37.200 --> 00:12:41.039 He speaks outside of the temple and outside of the confines of Israel. 00:12:41.200 --> 00:12:49.919 When we restrict ourselves to what I call temple thinking, then we set up categories for thinking and living that only apply to Sunday, but not to the rest of the week. 00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:51.039 Let me say that again. 00:12:51.200 --> 00:12:55.279 Temple thinking is this, oh, there's categories of living and being that they apply to Sunday. 00:12:55.360 --> 00:12:58.320 Well, there are certain things we don't do on Sunday, and it's okay over here. 00:12:58.399 --> 00:13:02.240 And if you're not careful, your life begins to sound like a Florida, Georgia lion song. 00:13:02.320 --> 00:13:05.360 You know, we cuss on them Mondays and we pray on them Sundays. 00:13:05.600 --> 00:13:06.799 That's temple thinking. 00:13:06.879 --> 00:13:10.399 I remember the first time I heard that on the radio, I just blurted out, Temple thinking. 00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:13.600 It's a good thing nobody was in my truck because that would have been kind of creepy. 00:13:14.080 --> 00:13:19.279 But yeah, it's kind of like, hey, Sunday is where I go to do penance for the way I've lived all these other days. 00:13:19.440 --> 00:13:22.159 That's the way people in the Bible talk about the temple. 00:13:22.240 --> 00:13:27.519 So that's why they wanted to kill Stephen because they dude, you're talking about tearing down the place where God lives. 00:13:27.679 --> 00:13:28.879 Where's God going to live? 00:13:29.039 --> 00:13:31.519 Hey, by the way, the answer is right here. 00:13:31.679 --> 00:13:35.200 That's why the Bible says, Don't you know that your body's the temple of God? 00:13:35.440 --> 00:13:37.679 See, here's the progression of God's residence. 00:13:37.759 --> 00:13:45.440 In the Old Testament, it's tabernacle, like a tent, that they move, God's presence is with us, then they build a temple, a building for God, and God lives there. 00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:48.320 But the New Testament is here is where God lives. 00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:55.279 And so, again, if you're here and you think, I'm not a good person, I struggle with addiction, I've got a foul mouth, I've got a horrible past. 00:13:55.440 --> 00:14:00.480 You said Rahab was a harlot, and I was like, mm-hmm, sign language, I got I relate to her. 00:14:00.720 --> goes on in six different times he mentions the the nation of Egypt before he lived in Haran. 00:14:42.960 --> 00:14:49.200 But basically, what he's trying to establish is that God is not restricted to Israel and the temple, he speaks in other places. 00:14:49.360 --> 00:14:54.000 One of the questions I want you to answer today at lunch is what is the weirdest place God's ever spoken to you? 00:14:54.240 --> 00:14:56.240 Because a lot of people struggle with Sundays. 00:14:56.320 --> 00:15:04.240 You leave Sundays kind of in a twist because you don't think about God uh uh like Monday through Saturday, the way you think about God on Sunday. 00:15:04.320 --> 00:15:14.559 And so you come to church, you got all your eggs in this basket, and if I don't hit a home run, or whoever's preaching doesn't hit a home run, or scratch exactly where you're itching, you leave and you're like, I can't believe I shaved my legs for that. 00:15:14.639 --> 00:15:15.600 That wasn't any good.
