last few times we've studied in the book of Acts, we've looked at a man named Cornelius, okay? 00:01:52.079 --> 00:01:57.760 Um up until this point, um, Jews are sharing the gospel with other Jews. 00:01:57.920 --> 00:02:04.000 But with the story of Cornelius, it's so intriguing because you have a Gentile man who actually comes to faith in Jesus. 00:02:04.159 --> 00:02:10.560 Cornelius gets saved through the ministry of Peter, and word spreads that this happens. 00:02:10.719 --> 00:02:13.599 There's a Gentile that gets saved. 00:02:14.159 --> 00:02:18.000 And Peter comes back to the church in Jerusalem. 00:02:18.319 --> 00:02:22.879 And in a stunning twist, they don't give him a raise for that. 00:02:23.439 --> 00:02:26.960 He doesn't get any extra PTO or a gift card. 00:02:49.280 So therefore, Peter starts explaining to him, listen, God shook my snow globe. 00:02:49.759 --> 00:02:56.960 God shook my snow globe, and what that means is Peter's Jewish brain is trained to think clean, unclean. 00:02:57.439 --> 00:03:01.280 Jewish, gentile, us, them, us, them, us, them. 00:03:01.360 --> 00:03:07.680 And Peter explains it, listen, I had a vision, and that something hilarious in verse 17, right here. 00:03:32.400 --> 00:03:41.360 He says this if God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I the Lord. 00:05:43.040 --> 00:05:50.240 Now, in the early 1800s, there was a playwright, a guy who wrote plays, his name is John Dennis, and he came up with the revolutionary way. 00:05:50.639 --> 00:05:56.240 This is before sound machines, he came up with the revolutionary way to make the sound of thunder during plays. 00:05:56.480 --> 00:06:01.519 He had somebody standing backstage with the metal thing and they would strike and it would sound like thunder. 00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:04.879 He premiered this in a play of his in 1709. 00:06:05.279 --> 00:06:07.279 And it sounded awesome. 00:06:07.839 --> 00:06:10.000 But the play wasn't that good at all. 00:06:10.240 --> 00:06:13.120 So after just four days, the play was shut down. 00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:18.480 And a few days later, they were premiering another play called Macbeth in the same theater. 00:06:18.720 --> 00:06:24.800 So John Dennis shows up as just a fan, as a spectator, and he's in the crowd and he's listening and he's watching the play. 00:06:24.879 --> 00:06:27.600 And there's a scene in this play where there's a storm. 00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:30.399 And he's like, wait a second. 00:06:30.720 --> 00:06:32.319 rejected my play, but they stole my thunder. 00:06:53.279 --> 00:06:54.639 They stole my thunder. 00:06:54.720 --> 00:06:58.959 So listen, something was obvious and familiar to him. 00:06:59.360 --> 00:07:02.079 So he named it and it stuck. 00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:09.199 In that same way, the passage we just looked at, okay, Antioch is making a lot of noise. 00:07:10.079 --> 00:07:18.240 And people are watching from the outside in, and something looks familiar and obvious to them, so they named them Christians. 00:07:18.560 --> 00:07:19.600 And it stuck. 00:07:19.920 --> 00:07:27.199 Okay, up until this point, they've been called disciples, they've been called saints, believers, brothers, witnesses, or even followers of the way. 00:07:27.279 --> 00:07:30.879 But right here is the debut of the nickname Christians. 00:07:31.199 --> 00:07:40.079 And my question we're gonna explore in our short time together is this hey, what was obvious and familiar that warranted this nickname? Right? 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:56.399 So what was obvious here, what was obvious and familiar about these believers that warranted that nickname? 00:07:56.720 --> 00:08:02.879 Well, the first thing you see here in the text is that they saw darkness as an opportunity to be a light for Christ. 00:08:03.120 --> 00:08:04.800 They saw darkness as an opportunity. 00:08:04.879 --> 00:08:08.399 Listen, it darkness to them was not a fuel for their pride. 00:08:08.639 --> 00:08:10.000 Like, look at all these heathens. 00:08:10.480 --> 00:08:11.839 Good thing I'm a Christian. 00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:14.319 It wasn't a fuel for their irritability. 00:08:14.560 --> 00:08:17.040 This world's going to hell in a handbasket. 00:08:17.519 --> 00:08:21.519 No, they saw darkness as an opportunity to be a light turned a murder, a brutal murder, into international missions. 00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:22.559 Okay, so people were spreading the gospel, but only to other Jews. 00:09:22.639 --> 00:09:23.679 But look at verse 20. 00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:24.799 Look at verse 20 again. 00:09:24.879 --> 00:09:25.679 It says this. 00:09:26.559 --> 00:09:28.639 But there were some of them. 00:09:29.840 --> 00:09:33.440 This seems to be a theme just in the Christian culture, even today. 00:09:33.679 --> 00:09:37.919 There are people who are um they're okay with the status quo. 00:09:38.000 --> 00:09:44.240 They're not rebels against the status quo, but they're always thinking, is there a more faithful way to be the people of God in this moment? 00:09:44.960 --> 00:09:46.639 But there were some of them. 00:09:47.039 --> 00:09:52.399 And this, some of them, okay, started sharing the gospel with the rule breakers. 00:09:53.120 --> 00:09:58.000 Okay, now there were Gentiles, and these rule breakers were actually coming to know Jesus. 00:09:58.080 --> 00:10:02.080 So there, but before this point, there were Gentiles who did come to Christ before, okay? 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:05.200 We saw um the Ethiopian eunuch. 00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:11.440 But the Ethiopian eunuch was already reading his Bible when Philip came. 00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:12.879 But he came to Christ. 00:10:12.960 --> 00:10:14.879 So there is also Cornelius. 00:10:15.679 --> 00:10:23.200 But Cornelius already had a reverence for Yahweh that fleshed itself out in him being generous and him praying continually. 00:10:23.519 --> 00:10:23.840 Okay? 00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:26.879 Antioch is a whole different animal. 00:10:27.120 --> 00:10:28.399 This is a different beast. 00:10:28.559 --> 00:10:31.679 Okay, so I have a map here that I'm gonna show you. 00:10:31.840 --> 00:10:38.399 Um, you can just ignore the colors and ignore the numbers, but I want to show you the distance between Antioch and Rome. 00:10:38.480 --> 00:10:44.240 So Antioch, um, as you can see here on this uh on this map, this is the third largest city in the Roman Empire. 00:10:44.399 --> 00:10:45.679 This is the capital of Syria. 00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:48.399 So if you can see it right there, I should have circled it or something. 00:10:48.480 --> 00:10:53.440 This is the capital of Syria right here to your to your right, left, right, to your right. 00:10:54.240 --> 00:10:56.879 Um, it was a very, very diverse place. 00:10:57.120 --> 00:10:59.919 People from all over the world were here. 00:11:00.000 --> 00:11:03.360 And as you can see, it's pretty far from Rome. 00:11:04.399 --> 00:11:15.840 And yet, there was a famous Roman comedian at the time who said the sewage of Antioch has been spilling into Rome for a long time. 00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:25.840 By this he meant the debauchery from Antioch continues to make its way over to Rome 1300 miles away. 00:11:26.480 --> 00:11:30.879 Okay, this city was in part notorious for some of its debauchery. 00:11:31.039 --> 00:11:34.879 Okay, there were worship of multiple gods, there was cult prostitution. 00:11:35.039 --> 00:11:37.600 This was a spiritually dark place. 00:11:38.240 --> 00:11:42.000 This was no longer them preaching to Cornelius. 00:11:42.240 --> 00:11:46.000 Okay, these were pagans smack dab in the middle of paganing. 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:48.639 I don't know if that's a thing. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:56.080 And yet, these unnamed people, these unnamed mavericks said, let's tell them about Jesus. 00:11:56.320 --> 00:11:57.919 Let's tell them about Jesus. 00:11:58.240 --> 00:12:02.000 So these days, my favorite worship song says, I'm gonna praise him anyway. 00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:07.840 Okay, if you can catch me up and down West Airport blasting that song and screaming, I'm gonna praise him anyway. 00:12:07.919 --> 00:12:12.320 And but these unnamed people, we don't know who they are, had the remix down um in Latin, um, the ending Ian, I A-N, meant the party of. 00:12:34.240 --> 00:12:38.000 So Christ Ian literally meant the party of Jesus. 00:12:38.159 --> 00:12:43.440 Okay, Christians were saying the word Christian was literally saying like Jesusites or Jesus people. 00:12:43.600 --> 00:12:46.960 It's describing people who were associated with Jesus Christ. 00:12:47.039 --> 00:12:55.120 So what warranted the nickname for Christians is that Christ was continually on their lips despite their environment. 00:12:56.080 --> 00:12:58.080 There were lights in the world. 00:12:59.120 --> 00:13:04.720 They weren't the point, they weren't selling themselves, but Jesus was the hero of their story. 00:13:04.960 --> 00:13:12.639 Not their political party, not their country, not their personality, not their therapist, not even their church. 00:13:13.120 --> 00:13:15.519 Jesus was the hero of their story. 00:13:15.600 --> 00:13:17.919 And friends, that's freeing. 00:13:18.720 --> 00:13:22.720 When Christ is the hero of your life and your story, that's freeing. 00:13:23.200 --> 00:13:28.000 And what you see here is when Jesus is the hero of your story, you can evangelize the gods. 00:13:49.840 --> 00:13:55.600 There is Zeus, there is Poseidon, there is Artemis, Apollos, Adonis, Athenus, Athena. 00:13:56.240 --> 00:13:59.279 Yet they presented Jesus as the Lord. And friends, that is beautifully offensive. 00:14:08.639 --> 00:14:12.480 Sometimes we say things so much we don't even remember, we don't even think about them at all. 00:14:12.639 --> 00:14:25.360 I had a friend of mine that was um discipling me in uh in high school, his name is Jordan, and he I remember him telling me the story of him going on a college campus and getting his guitar and singing the song Our God is greater at a college campus. 00:14:25.519 --> 00:14:32.399 And as he's singing, going, Our God is greater, our God is stronger, our God is higher than any. 00:14:33.279 --> 00:14:34.159 He hit him. 00:14:34.320 --> 00:14:40.399 This song is really offensive, but that's what you see, that's what you see here. 00:14:40.639 --> 00:14:44.879 Okay, that's what they they knew that the gospel was power. 00:14:45.919 --> 00:14:47.840 They knew that the gospel was power. 00:14:48.399 --> 00:15:02.080 Romans 1:16 says it like this I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God. 00:15:02.639 --> 00:15:16.720 Notice what it doesn't say, it doesn't say it is powerful or it has power, but it is the power of God for salvation to anyone, to everyone who believes, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 00:15:17.600 --> 00:15:27.200 Listen, if you have a powerful bomb in your hands or a detonator in your hands, and your commander tells you, Hey, it's time, press the button. 00:15:27.519 --> 00:15:29.679 Be a good soldier, press the button. 00:15:29.919 --> 00:15:37.600 Okay, your form in pressing the button, your technique, and how cool or how put together you look in pressing the button doesn't matter. 00:15:37.840 --> 00:15:40.639 Even your competency up to that point doesn't even matter. 00:15:40.720 --> 00:15:44.320 It's just be faithful enough to they did unanimously, faithfully, and powerfully. 00:15:55.200 --> 00:16:01.200 But when Jesus is the hero of your story, you can evangelize without any fear, not selling yourself, you can evangelize what only Barnabas could do. 00:17:10.000 --> 00:17:15.519 He starts he starts uh he starts acting out his nickname, okay, encouraging anything that moves. 00:17:15.680 --> 00:17:16.960 He's encouraging everyone. 00:17:17.119 --> 00:17:21.440 So um he tells him to remain faithful and keep going and give it their all. 00:17:22.559 --> 00:17:28.000 But instead of playing hero ball, he leaves again to go get Paul to help him. 00:17:28.240 --> 00:17:31.119 And they do ministry there for a year. 00:17:31.519 --> 00:17:38.319 Okay, Barnabas walked into a situation where he could have been a big-time megachurch guy, mega church pastor. 00:17:38.559 --> 00:17:48.000 He could have soaked up the praise and saved the day, got all the glory and affirmation, maybe even a book deal at the very end of it. 00:17:49.200 --> 00:17:52.559 But he understood that it's too dark to play these games. 00:17:52.960 --> 00:17:56.319 It's too dark to live life on selfie mode. 00:17:56.799 --> 00:17:58.880 The gospel takes us out of selfie mode. 00:17:58.960 --> 00:18:02.880 What the gospel does, it makes us less about me and more about mission. 00:18:03.119 --> 00:18:12.079 Remember, the church is not just some organization that you can rise up in and to feed your ego, but this is an organism in which Jesus is the head and he is the hero. 00:18:12.319 --> 00:18:17.039 Jesus dying on the cross outs us as bad heroes and bad gods. 00:18:17.440 --> 00:18:23.680 And because of this, he realized verse 24 says he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. 00:18:23.839 -->
