because the reality is this we spend way, way too much time thinking of how other people have sinned, wronged us, not looked at us the right way, didn't greet us on the way in, didn't shake our hand, missed giving me a bulletin, br- and on and on the list could go. 00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:25.680 And so why thinking of yourself is godly is because there's a recent study that went out by a guy by the name of David Kinneman. 00:04:25.839 --> 00:04:29.439 He is with the Barna group, and he wrote a book called Unchristian. 00:04:29.680 --> 00:04:30.399 UnChristian. 00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:33.360 And basically the whole premise of the book is basically this. 00:04:33.519 --> 00:04:43.120 It's built on this, is that we um obviously grew up and we were raised this nation, America, U.S., uh, the one that's going to dominate the Olympics over the next few weeks. 00:04:43.199 --> 00:04:53.839 Uh we were raised basically underneath the premise of Judeo-Christian principles, and basically we're at the point now in our society, in our culture, where we're just kind of over that. 00:04:54.160 --> 00:04:56.560 We're over the whole Judeo-Christian thing. 00:04:56.639 --> 00:04:58.879 If you don't culture now what people are calling post-Christian. 00:05:09.279 --> 00:05:11.040 After Christianity. 00:05:11.279 --> 00:05:16.000 It's kind of the kingdom is come and gone, and this, that was great, and everything, hey, you guys had your day in the sun. 00:05:16.240 --> 00:05:17.519 Now it's our turn. 00:05:17.839 --> 00:05:18.800 Post-Christian. 00:05:18.959 --> 00:05:23.600 So David Kinneman wrote this book called UnChristian, and he basically did a bunch of different studies. 00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:24.560 That's what Barna does. 00:05:24.639 --> 00:05:27.199 They do a bunch of studies and find a bunch of statistics. 00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:38.879 Uh, and one of the statistics I found um that resonated with us or should today is that he surveyed uh uh uh a lot of different people uh not from that were born from 1965 to 2002. 00:05:39.199 --> 00:05:46.639 So that's anywhere between 12 and 49 years of age, and basically uh uh uh come down with this. 00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:49.279 Um and it's it this is the uh the statistic. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:56.480 87% of people said that the term judgmental accurately describes present-day Christianity. 00:06:00.399 --> 00:06:06.480 87% of people they surveyed would say that we are judgmental. 00:06:07.279 --> 00:06:20.879 He kept going, and he said, actually, what the good news is that the of the non-Christian surveyed, the ones that don't agree with the faith that we hold tightly to, he said, 84% of those people personally know at least one committed Christian. 00:06:21.120 --> 00:06:23.920 So the good news is we're rubbing elbows with non-believers. 00:06:24.079 --> 00:06:33.360 That's that's the great news, is that 84% of non-believers can identify someone in their life that calls Christ Lord and follows them. 00:06:33.600 --> 00:06:41.360 The bad news is only 15% of us, they would say, that does that actually make a difference in your life. 00:06:41.759 --> 00:06:49.519 So there's this huge gap between, yeah, they know who we are, but only because we profess it and not because we live it. 00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:51.600 And so basically, two things. 00:06:51.759 --> 00:07:00.160 We're great at giving lip service to what we believe, the statistics would say, and then we're also really good at telling people what we don't believe. 00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:02.720 That we're judgmental or we disagree. 00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:09.199 Not that we are making right judgments, but the way in which we do them is judgmental. 00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:19.519 The vast majority of what he found is that we are a judgmental people, and so it's no wonder that today we're talking about why thinking of yourself is godly out of Romans 14. 00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:24.399 And as we do so, let us catch us up on basically what God's gonna say to all of us. 00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:28.800 He is gonna basically instruct us on the gray matters of faith. 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:30.319 Not the black and white. 00:07:30.399 --> 00:07:35.680 He's gone chapter 12 and chapter 13 doing very black and white instructions. 00:07:35.759 --> 00:07:37.279 These are some of the things that he's talked about. 00:07:37.519 --> 00:07:38.319 Issues of worship. 00:07:38.399 --> 00:07:39.680 How is it that we should worship? 00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:49.199 Living in grace, loving others with a genuine, unhypocritical love, submitting to authority, which we all love, and walking the Christian walk. 00:07:49.360 --> 00:07:52.399 That's basically where we've been, Romans 12, Romans 13. 00:07:52.560 --> 00:07:57.279 And now he turns from essential manners in the faith, black and white. 00:07:57.519 --> 00:08:08.800 He says, this is how we must behave concerning non-essentials, the gray matter of the faith, where maybe the Bible isn't as clear as we would like for it to be. 00:08:08.959 --> 00:08:09.839 How do we behave? 00:08:09.920 --> 00:08:13.199 How do we how do we live in that gray area? 00:08:13.600 --> 00:08:17.920 Let's just read Romans 14, 1 to 12, and Paul will give us his own instruction. 00:08:18.079 --> 00:08:19.199 We'll unpack it. 00:08:19.519 --> 00:08:26.000 He says, As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. 00:08:26.399 --> 00:08:30.800 One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. 00:08:31.040 --> 00:08:40.080 Let not the one who eats who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:42.799 Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? 00:08:42.960 --> 00:08:50.480 It is before his own master that he stands or falls, and he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand. 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:55.840 One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. 00:08:56.000 --> 00:08:58.799 Each one should be fully account of himself to God. 00:09:53.919 --> 00:10:01.919 There's at least three reasons why thinking of yourself is godly that you can find in these first twelve verses of Romans 14. 00:10:02.080 --> 00:10:08.960 The first one is this first reason why thinking of ourself is godly is because God has welcomed all believers. 00:10:09.120 --> 00:10:14.879 And I had somebody come up to me after the first service and they said, and then you should just add like a comma and go, not you. 00:10:15.600 --> 00:10:20.559 It is God, not you, who has welcomed all believers. 00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:22.639 And let me just unpack that a little bit. 00:10:22.799 --> 00:10:26.080 Uh Paul is clearly talking to the family of God. 00:10:26.159 --> 00:10:27.039 He talks about brothers. 00:10:27.120 --> 00:10:28.000 Why do you judge your brother? 00:10:28.080 --> 00:10:29.279 Why do you despise your brother? 00:10:29.440 --> 00:10:31.919 This is talking about believers, not non-believers. 00:10:32.080 --> 00:10:36.240 This is you and me, those that call on Jesus as our king. 00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:41.440 And you'd be surprised, by the way, at how much the Bible doesn't talk to non-believers. 00:10:41.600 --> 00:10:43.840 Like he just is silent to non-believers. 00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:51.440 And the reason for that is because uh the Spirit of God is not in them, and he does not expect them to hear him or do anything that God would instruct them to do. 00:10:51.679 --> 00:10:58.559 Instead, he instructs his kids because we're his, and so we're gonna respond in that and actually be obedient to what God says. 00:10:58.799 --> 00:11:09.120 So these types of things, especially this today, he's calling us to respond in a responsible and in a mature manner that has eyes to see and ears to hear. 00:11:09.279 --> 00:11:14.320 But this is basically the problem, and it's gonna come down home hard on us here in just a minute. 00:11:14.559 --> 00:11:18.559 Here's the problem that Rome was understanding and living through. 00:11:18.960 --> 00:11:20.960 The early Roman church. 00:11:21.360 --> 00:11:23.759 Basically, it was this they were hearing the same words. 00:11:23.919 --> 00:11:25.039 There were two groups of people. 00:11:25.200 --> 00:11:39.679 The Bible wasn't written yet, but let's just say that they were reading the Bible, they were, they were still being written, they were hearing the words of Jesus, they were hearing the words of the apostles, they were quote unquote reading the Bible, and these two groups of people were applying it in radically different ways. 00:11:39.919 --> 00:11:49.440 And so the stronger Christians, those that what most people think is of Gentile background, that would be probably most of us in this room, came from all types of faiths, okay? 00:11:49.600 --> 00:11:53.679 And they grew up and they were in a pluralistic society, and so there was a lot of freedom in all of that. 00:11:53.840 --> 00:12:00.159 And so, where the Bible was silent, all of a sudden they filled that silence with freedom. 00:12:00.559 --> 00:12:02.080 Responsible freedom. 00:12:02.240 --> 00:12:06.639 And so for them, the Bible, Jesus didn't ever really say anything about what to eat, how to eat it. 00:12:06.720 --> 00:12:09.279 I mean, what do we have to cook it to 165 degrees? 00:12:09.440 --> 00:12:10.320 What do we do here? 00:12:10.480 --> 00:12:17.039 Jesus is silent, and so for the stronger, more mature believers, the Gentile believers, they filled the silence with freedom. 00:12:17.200 --> 00:12:17.840 They're like, you know what? 00:12:17.919 --> 00:12:21.600 Jesus didn't really say this, but I'm gonna eat it because I'm gonna do it to the honor and glory of God. 00:12:21.759 --> 00:12:22.879 Yeah, come on. 00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:38.559 And then all of a sudden you have the quote-unquote weaker believers, and most people think they came from Jewish descent, and the reason why they were a little bit weaker, so to speak, for Paul, and oh, by the way, he was one of them, uh, is because they they came from a background of rules and regulations and law. 00:12:38.720 --> 00:12:45.759 And so where Jesus was silent, where the apostles were silent, all of a sudden they filled that silence not with freedom, but with more rules. 00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:53.759 And so where Jesus basically didn't talk about, hey, what you can eat, if this is the Sabbath day, I mean, people talk to him all the time, hey, it's a Sabbath day, and goes, I'm the Lord of the Sabbath. 00:12:54.080 --> 00:12:59.519 Okay, but I'm now I'm years later now, Jesus, and you're you're I'm the Lord of the Sabbath, really cool saying. 00:12:59.679 --> 00:13:00.159 Doesn't help me. 00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:02.159 What am I supposed to do with the Sabbath now? 00:13:02.960 --> 00:13:08.639 And the stronger ones filled it with freedom, and the weaker ones, quote unquote, filled it with rules. 00:13:08.879 --> 00:13:14.320 00:16:42.080 All these things that you could get caught up in in this gray area of life, welcome one another. 00:16:42.240 --> 00:16:44.879 And the reason for that is because God has welcomed you.
