want to invite you to take out your Bibles today and turn to Luke's gospel, chapter one, and we're going to start at verse 67. 00:01:38.640 --> 00:01:43.040 Luke's gospel has a very unique story in it about a family. 00:01:43.200 --> 00:01:46.000 And no, it's not Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. 00:01:46.079 --> 00:01:47.519 It's actually another family. 00:01:47.840 --> 00:01:53.920 Mary's cousin, Elizabeth, her husband Zechariah, and their son John the Baptist. 00:01:54.159 --> 00:01:57.760 See, the Gospel of Luke has not one but two births. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:00.640 The first birth is John the Baptist. 00:02:00.879 --> 00:02:04.879 And today we're going to pick up just after his birth has happened. 00:02:04.959 --> 00:02:09.280 So let's read from Luke chapter 1, verse 67 through 79. 00:02:09.919 --> 00:02:56.719 And his father, that's John the Baptist's father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, saying, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, that we should be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us, to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:22.319 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the today's sermon, The Way of Peace. 00:03:24.960 --> 00:03:27.919 We've lit in the second candle of Advent, which is for peace. 00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:30.719 But before we get to that, I want us to go back to verse 67. 00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:35.039 We find the priest Zechariah speaking a blessing. 00:03:35.199 --> 00:03:37.439 Now, this was not a normal blessing. 00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:47.280 This was Zechariah says, filled with the Holy Spirit prophesying over his son and giving us a vision for how God would use John the Baptist to prepare the way for Jesus. 00:03:47.439 --> 00:03:53.759 It's helpful for us before we get to what Zechariah said to have some background on Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth. 00:03:53.919 --> 00:03:59.680 The first thing we see today is that God uses ordinary people like Zechariah to do extraordinary things. 00:03:59.919 --> 00:04:06.080 Earlier in Luke chapter 1, we learned that Zechariah was a priest in the land of Judea in the days when Herod was king. 00:04:06.159 --> 00:04:09.199 Now, this was a dark time in Israel's history. 00:04:09.439 --> 00:04:17.759 Even though the nation of Israel had come back from exile, they were occupied by a foreign nation, the Roman Empire, and he had installed their puppet, Herod the Great. 00:04:17.920 --> 00:04:22.720 Worse than that, though, was there had not been a prophet in Israel for 400 years. 00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:30.639 Since the book of Amalachi, you have what's called sometimes the 400 years of silence, where no one has spoken as a prophet. 00:04:30.800 --> 00:04:33.600 So in the meantime, you have priests like Zechariah. 00:04:33.759 --> 00:04:36.480 They were just continuing the ministry that God had given them. 00:04:36.560 --> 00:04:37.759 Now, what is a priest? 00:04:38.160 --> 00:04:42.000 A priest that we're talking about not back then isn't necessarily what we would think of as today. 00:04:42.160 --> 00:04:44.079 Priests were the people that led the people in worship. 00:04:44.240 --> 00:04:49.120 They offered sacrifices, they burned incense, they taught the scriptures, they served in the temple. 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:51.839 And when we first meet Zechariah, that's exactly what he's doing. 00:04:51.920 --> 00:04:55.360 He's doing actually something very special in the temple, and he's burning incense. 00:04:55.439 --> 00:04:59.439 This was such a big job that you got to do it once in your whole life and you were done. 00:04:59.519 --> 00:05:01.279 It's kind of like the Super Bowl for a priest. 00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:01.680 All right. 00:05:01.839 --> 00:05:03.519 So he's never going to get to do this again. 00:05:03.600 --> 00:05:04.800 He's got this big moment. 00:05:05.360 --> 00:05:06.959 And we'll come back to that in a little bit. 00:05:07.040 --> 00:05:09.040 But Zechariah wasn't just a priest. 00:05:09.199 --> 00:05:11.439 We also see he was an old priest. 00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:14.800 He was married to Elizabeth, who was also old. 00:05:14.959 --> 00:05:19.439 If Zechariah and Elizabeth were members of our church, they'd be involved in the varsity. 00:05:19.600 --> 00:05:23.519 If some of y'all are familiar with that, I see some of y'all 65 and older know what I'm talking about. 00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:28.959 So we see the problem for Zechariah and Elizabeth was they had no child. 00:05:29.279 --> 00:05:30.879 Elizabeth was barren. 00:05:31.040 --> 00:05:37.040 And this was particularly painful because childlessness a lot of times had a cultural stigma attached to it. 00:05:37.279 --> 00:05:41.040 But Luke 1, 6, it says this about Zechariah and Elizabeth. 00:05:41.120 --> 00:05:52.000 They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord, but they had no child because Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in years. 00:05:52.160 --> 00:05:53.519 Now, this is important for two reasons. 00:05:53.680 --> 00:05:57.279 One, because their childlessness, it was not a judgment for sin. 00:05:57.519 --> 00:06:03.040 Number two, this childlessness would be used to display the miracles of God. 00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:10.079 And I'm not going to go back and read the whole passage, but I do want us to look at those three miracles from their lives briefly. 00:06:10.160 --> 00:06:17.120 Because here's what, again, God takes an ordinary man, an ordinary woman, and he does three miracles in their lives to do something extraordinary. 00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:22.000 The first miracle is this Gabriel the angel appears, just like we heard earlier, he appeared to Mary. 00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:24.639 He also appeared to Zechariah before that. 00:06:24.800 --> 00:06:29.279 He tells Zechariah, his wife Elizabeth is going to conceive and they're going to have a son. 00:06:29.439 --> 00:06:33.759 All the years that they've been praying for a son, he hears that prayer is going to be answered. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:38.959 Now, remember how I said Zechariah and Elizabeth would be in the varsity if they were in our church? 00:06:39.199 --> 00:06:48.800 Earlier this week, I was telling my kids this story, sitting at the dinner table, doing our advent devotional, and I said, Can you imagine if your mamma and pop pop were having a baby in their 60s? 00:06:49.040 --> 00:06:50.720 You should have seen the look on their faces. 00:06:50.800 --> 00:06:54.560 They're like, come on, dad, don't talk about that. 00:06:54.800 --> 00:06:56.639 Yeah, we we all get this. 00:06:56.800 --> 00:06:58.399 It's a miracle. 00:06:58.959 --> 00:07:05.360 But God is sovereign over every part of our bodies, including our reproductive organs that never worked like they should. 00:07:05.519 --> 00:07:20.959 All those stories that Zechariah and Elizabeth had heard over the years of Sarah, of Rachel, of Leah, of Hannah, of Naomi, of these people being given babies by God, what they had read about was about to become real for them because their prayer was gonna be answered. 00:07:21.199 --> 00:07:26.720 God is the God of the womb, and in his wisdom, he closes it and he opens it for his own purposes. 00:07:26.959 --> 00:07:29.120 The second miracle was not being able to speak. 00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:31.600 Now, this was the result of Zechariah's disbelief. 00:07:32.079 --> 00:07:36.480 Gabriel, the angel, had told him, Hey, I'm God's messenger and you're gonna have a son. 00:07:36.639 --> 00:07:39.680 And Zechariah's response is hysterical. 00:07:39.920 --> 00:07:42.240 His response is, I'm old. 00:07:42.480 --> 00:07:45.600 My wife is barren, my wife is old. 00:07:46.560 --> 00:07:48.639 Do you think the angel didn't know that? 00:07:50.160 --> 00:07:53.360 I mean, I'm God's messenger, you're gonna have a son. 00:07:53.519 --> 00:07:55.439 Zechariah's response is, I'm old. 00:07:55.680 --> 00:07:58.160 Gabriel's response, I'm Gabriel. 00:07:58.399 --> 00:08:00.480 I stand in the presence of God. 00:08:00.639 --> 00:08:02.720 I mean, the humor here is just it's just rich. 00:08:02.879 --> 00:08:06.399 So instead of trusting God's messenger, Zechariah wants a sign. 00:08:06.560 --> 00:08:08.000 So Gabriel does, he says, you know what? 00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:08.800 I'll give you a sign. 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:09.600 You can't talk anymore. 00:08:09.680 --> 00:08:11.920 It's like he took the remote out, hit the mute button. 00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:16.959 You're not gonna talk until all these things that I've mentioned have taken place. 00:08:17.839 --> 00:08:21.360 Now, Zechariah wasn't able to speak for nine months. 00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:25.120 Some of you wives right now are thinking, man, my husband couldn't speak for nine months. 00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:26.720 That'd be pretty nice. 00:08:29.839 --> 00:08:35.519 It's like Zechariah all of a sudden goes home, can't talk. 00:08:36.159 --> 00:08:41.840 A couple weeks later, he starts to realize, oh, the angel wasn't lying. 00:08:42.080 --> 00:08:50.000 Because he, you know, Zechariah and Elizabeth, they did what married people do, and it became clear that a woman in the twilight of her years was having a baby. 00:08:50.320 --> 00:08:56.960 And so now we see Zechariah has nine months to think, what has God been talking about through this angel? 00:08:57.360 --> 00:09:02.559 Fast forward nine months, a third miracle happens just after John the Baptist was born, eight days after his birth. 00:09:02.639 --> 00:09:05.600 He got all the aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins. 00:09:05.759 --> 00:09:08.399 They've all come for the naming and the circumcision. 00:09:08.559 --> 00:09:12.159 They're ready to meet little baby Zechariah, because that's what they wanted to do. 00:09:12.240 --> 00:09:13.519 They wanted to name him after his dad. 00:09:13.600 --> 00:09:14.240 That was common. 00:09:14.399 --> 00:09:20.000 But Elizabeth looks at her husband, who's not spoken a word for nine months, and she says, No, his name is John. 00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:21.919 Well, the family doesn't like that. 00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:27.919 So they go to Zechariah, which, by the way, this is just a side note, but lots of you have family members that do this to you. 00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:31.440 They don't get what they want from you, so then they go to your husband or they go to your wife. 00:09:31.519 --> 00:09:32.799 Uh that's called triangulation. 00:09:32.879 --> 00:09:35.759 You're gonna see a lot of it over the holidays, so be looking out for it. 00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:41.519 John steps up, he asks for something to write with, and it says, His name is John. 00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:46.399 And all of a sudden, a voice that they had not heard for nine months is speaking. 00:09:46.559 --> 00:09:50.799 It's like God took that remote out, unmute, and now Zechariah can speak. 00:09:50.960 --> 00:09:52.720 And his speech was that third miracle. 00:09:52.799 --> 00:09:58.960 That was the proof that God had spoken through the angel that his work and his will would be done. 00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:04.000 We say all this to begin here, just to say that God is at work at every moment of your life. 00:10:04.240 --> 00:10:06.000 God is at work in every moment of my life. 00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:08.000 We don't always understand God's purposes. 00:10:08.240 --> 00:10:13.600 He often uses unexpected events and unexpected people to accomplish those purposes. 00:10:13.759 --> 00:10:20.000 See, God had prepared Zechariah and Elizabeth through every season of their long lives for this moment. 00:10:20.720 --> 00:10:38.159 The very ordinary feelings of excitement to be married, to have children, of having unanswered prayer for those children, of growing older, of experiencing resignation with childlessness, and then the surprise of a pregnant woman in her 60s or 70s. 00:10:38.399 --> 00:10:44.000 God used their whole lives to show us how he does extraordinary things with ordinary people. 00:10:44.159 --> 00:10:44.480 G.K. 00:10:44.639 --> 00:10:52.240 Chesterson once said this: the most extraordinary thing in the world is an ordinary man and an ordinary woman and their ordinary children. 00:10:52.480 --> 00:10:58.799 You know, it's often through the mundane, ordinary, taken for granted things that God uses to make his point. 00:10:58.960 --> 00:11:02.960 Now, that was a long introduction to get us to Zechariah's blessing in verse 68. 00:11:03.039 --> 00:11:07.679 Uh, or as Uncle Lewis says to Aunt Bethany in Christmas Vacation, the blessing. 00:11:08.080 --> 00:11:09.279 How I like to remember this. 00:11:09.440 --> 00:11:13.279 But uh now, again, this is just a side note, but we get to a blessing. 00:11:13.360 --> 00:11:14.879 This is very important to me as a dad. 00:11:14.960 --> 00:11:17.679 Uh now I want to speak to the parents in the room, especially the dads. 00:11:17.840 --> 00:11:19.360 I want to encourage you to take note here. Testament. 00:12:05.440 --> 00:12:12.080 Verses 68 through 74, this is a summary of all that God has done to save his people up to this point in history. 00:12:12.240 --> 00:12:16.720 Verse 68 says that God has visited and redeemed his people. 00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:18.480 And this was the plan the whole time. 00:12:18.639 --> 00:12:19.840 Jesus didn't come by accident. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:23.200 He was sent as the plan from the beginning to save God's people. 00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:25.360 Now, there's just two things we want to highlight here. 00:12:25.519 --> 00:12:28.799 One, Abraham's covenant, and two, the lineage of David. 00:12:28.960 --> 00:12:35.679 God appeared way back to Abraham in Genesis 12, and it says this, and I will make of you a great nation. 00:12:35.919 --> 00:12:39.919 I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. 00:12:40.080 --> 00:12:44.159 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you, I will curse. 00:12:44.320 --> 00:12:48.080 And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 00:12:48.399 --> 00:12:58.000 See, even though Abraham and Sarah were old, just like Zechariah and Elizabeth, God gave them a son in their old age, and they became a great nation. 00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:01.200 This is what we call the Abrahamic covenant. 00:13:01.440 --> 00:13:05.120 God's plan to bless the world came through Abraham. 00:13:05.279 --> 00:13:09.279 That's by the way, what one of our core values as a church is blessing. 00:13:09.519 --> 00:13:12.240 We have gospel, community, mission, and blessing. 00:13:12.320 --> 00:13:17.360 When we do our part as the church, we are a part of God's blessing. 00:13:17.600 --> 00:13:20.320 The blessing that God's telling Abraham about, that's us. up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David. 00:13:30.960 --> 00:13:36.879 David was the greatest king of Israel, and God also made a covenant with him, 2 Samuel 7. 00:13:37.120 --> 00:13:43.120 God says to David, and your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. 00:13:43.279 --> 00:13:45.440 Your throne shall be established forever. 00:13:45.679 --> 00:13:51.440 That's one of the reasons that Matthew's gospel opens up with this long list of people that had a role to play in the history of salvation. 00:13:51.600 --> 00:13:55.840 Starts at Abraham, goes to David, and ends at Jesus. 00:13:56.159 --> 00:14:05.600 Now, when I think about this first section of Zechariah's prophecy from 68, uh going down to verse 75, it's interesting to note to this point. 00:14:05.919 --> 00:14:12.799 Zechariah, like I said, has had nine months of silence to think about what that angel said. 00:14:13.360 --> 00:14:17.600 The blessing that he's giving here, it's really a great act of worship. 00:14:18.639 --> 00:14:24.639 Great acts of worship often come from great seasons of silence and of stillness. 00:14:26.720 --> 00:14:30.960 As we read this blessing, we read the words of a man who's been thinking deeply. 00:14:32.159 --> 00:14:33.519 What did he think about? 00:14:34.240 --> 00:14:37.360 Did he think about God's promise of salvation? 00:14:37.600 --> 00:14:41.120 Did he think about the endless role that he had as a priest? 00:14:41.279 --> 00:14:51.440 Of the endless rivers of blood that spilled and flowed with each generation of priests that made endless sacrifices that could never fully atone for endless sins? 00:14:51.759 --> 00:14:53.039 Did he think about scripture? 00:14:53.120 --> 00:14:54.639 Did he think of history? 00:14:54.879 --> 00:14:59.200 Did he think of his son John preparing the people for the coming of the Lord? 00:14:59.360 --> 00:15:02.720 You know, as we hear the words of this blessing, the answer is yes. 00:15:02.960 --> 00:15:15.919 Even though Israel had lived through centuries of exile now, even though they had no king from the line of David, even though they're living under foreign rulers, Zechariah's words remind us that God still remembered his oath to Abraham. 00:15:16.080 --> 00:15:20.240 All that time of silence and stillness, it wasn't punishment, it was discipline. 00:15:20.480 show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham. 00:15:35.919 --> 00:15:42.240 Zechariah, his name is a combination of two words, Zakar and Yah. 00:15:42.720 --> 00:15:44.320 Zakar means remember. 00:15:44.960 --> 00:15:46.960 Yah means Yahweh. 00:15:47.600 --> 00:15:51.039 So his name means Yahweh remembers. 00:15:51.519 --> 00:15:52.480 But it gets better. 00:15:52.639 --> 00:15:54.720 Elizabeth's name, two words. 00:15:55.039 --> 00:15:56.639 Eli and Shiva. 00:15:57.840 --> 00:16:01.200 Eli, God, Shabbat is an oath. 00:16:01.519 --> 00:16:05.440 Her name means God is an oath. 00:16:05.840 --> 00:16:09.840 Just picture these two people throughout their whole lives waking up each morning. 00:16:10.159 --> saying those names and having that understanding of God and wondering, are our prayers ever going to be answered? 00:16:22.480 --> 00:16:27.360 Not just prayers for the baby, but the prayers for the restoration of Israel. 00:16:28.799 --> 00:16:37.120 And at the end of their lives, they're given their newborn son, looking at each other, holding their son in bed, whose name means God is gracious. really the same. 00:16:51.759 --> 00:16:53.840 God always keeps his promises. 00:16:54.080 --> 00:17:00.240 The greatest promise is found in sending us that Messiah, the Son of David, Jesus Christ, to
