00:03:18.560 --> 00:03:26.960 I got over there and I'm I'm standing right beside him, and he's reading, and he just looks up, put his finger down, and he looked up and I said, Excuse me, sir, are you a Christian? 00:03:27.120 --> 00:03:28.879 And this is the experience I had that day. 00:03:29.039 --> 00:03:33.039 He looked up at me and he said, smiled, he said, No, my brother, that's a little broad for me. 00:03:33.120 --> 00:03:35.599 A lot of people call themselves Christian, they don't follow Jesus. 00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:38.719 I like to call myself a follower of Jesus. 00:03:39.039 --> 00:03:48.719 And at that, he went back to reading, and I just slowly backed up as everyone stared, and now they're giggling at me, and I'm just backing up like, okay, that was kind of awkward. 00:03:48.960 --> 00:03:51.599 It was awkward and invitational all at the same time. 00:03:51.759 --> 00:04:00.960 Because in that moment, this man who I did not meet, I didn't ask his name, I don't know who he is, he caused me to think about this thing on a deeper, more biblical level. 00:04:01.120 --> 00:04:09.039 And so, one of the questions you gotta ask yourself this morning is do you just consider yourself a Christian uh because you vote Republican and you watch Fox News? 00:04:09.280 --> 00:04:12.080 Or do you consider yourself a follower of Jesus? 00:04:12.319 --> 00:04:18.879 And what you will see today, hopefully, uh in God's word, is it following Jesus has some implications, okay? 00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:20.480 Let's just jump into the text. 00:04:20.560 --> 00:04:22.639 Uh Matthew chapter 8, verse 18. 00:04:22.800 --> 00:04:26.720 Now, when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:31.839 And a scribe came up to him and said uh to him, Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:39.199 And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. 00:04:39.439 --> 00:04:43.040 Another of the disciples said to him, Lord, let me first go bury my father. 00:04:43.199 --> 00:04:48.800 And Jesus said to him, Follow me and leave the dead to bury their own dead. 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:55.199 Now, here's my concern that Jesus talked about following him in a way that the American church doesn't. 00:04:55.439 --> 00:05:02.720 There's an abruptness to it and a priority to it and an urgency to it that we seem kind of lost with our slick slack programming these days. 00:05:02.879 --> 00:05:07.120 And I just want to point to three things in the text around the clarity and the priority of following Jesus. 00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:10.800 The first one is this Jesus wants disciples, not a crowd. 00:05:11.040 --> 00:05:13.600 Jesus came to make disciples, not draw a crowd. 00:05:13.759 --> 00:05:14.560 Look at verse 18. 00:05:14.639 --> 00:05:19.680 He says, now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go to the other side. 00:05:19.920 --> 00:05:22.160 Mark this down and test me on this. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:35.839 If you read the New Testament, anytime Jesus realized, hey, there's a crowd around me, he didn't go, hey, somebody, he didn't have his photography team with a videographer, kind of get all this stuff so he can post it on socials and build his brand. 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:43.439 Now, when Jesus saw there's a crowd around me, his first assumption was, these knuckleheads don't know what it's all about following me, okay? 00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:48.160 They're here and they're interested in something, but what they're interested in is not me. 00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:51.360 Because Jesus wants disciples, he doesn't want a crowd. 00:05:51.439 --> 00:05:54.879 And so he saw the crowd around him and he gave orders to go to the other side. 00:05:54.959 --> 00:05:55.600 What does it mean? 00:05:55.759 --> 00:05:56.800 The other side of the lake. 00:05:56.879 --> 00:05:58.800 Like, get away from these people, okay? 00:05:58.959 --> 00:06:02.639 Because again, Jesus is like, hey, he didn't have agoraphobia. 00:06:02.800 --> 00:06:07.519 He's just like, I'm here to make disciples, not win a popularity contest. 00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:10.720 But it's natural to hear this and go, well, where'd the crowd come from? 00:06:10.959 --> 00:06:12.879 Because I mean, there was no social media. 00:06:12.959 --> 00:06:15.519 He didn't have a like a front man or a hype man. 00:06:15.759 --> 00:06:17.279 Context is important, okay? 00:06:17.439 --> 00:06:21.040 And in the previous section, Jesus just healed a lot of people. 00:06:21.120 --> 00:06:24.000 So I want to go back and read verses 14 to 17. 00:06:24.160 --> 00:06:25.920 Look and listen to what's happening. 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:28.160 And this is what this is where the crowd came from. 00:06:28.319 --> 00:06:35.279 Verse 14 of Matthew 8 says, This when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 00:06:35.439 --> 00:06:39.680 He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:46.720 That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. 00:06:46.959 --> 00:06:49.600 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah. 00:06:49.759 --> 00:06:53.199 He took our illnesses and bore our desires, our diseases, excuse me. 00:06:53.360 --> 00:06:59.040 Now, when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he said, Hey, listen, I want to get away from this thing. 00:06:59.199 --> 00:07:01.120 Here's the there's two things you want to see. 00:07:01.519 --> 00:07:03.120 Why did the crowd come to Jesus? 00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:05.040 Why is there always a crowd around Jesus? 00:07:05.279 --> 00:07:05.920 Two reasons. 00:07:06.079 --> 00:07:08.000 Two things that the crowds experience in Jesus. 00:07:08.160 --> 00:07:09.920 Number one, spiritual authority. 00:07:10.160 --> 00:07:11.040 Spiritual authority. 00:07:11.120 --> 00:07:12.959 And number two, physical dominion. 00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:15.920 Spiritual authority and then physical dominion. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:16.560 What do you mean? 00:07:16.720 --> 00:07:17.519 Spiritual authority. 00:07:17.680 --> 00:07:19.519 Jesus, by the way, look at me. 00:07:19.759 --> 00:07:28.240 Not only did Jesus have spiritual authority, but all through the gospel, the people that followed him, his disciples, many occasions he would say, he would send them out to do something. 00:07:28.319 --> 00:07:33.199 And look at me, he would say, the Bible says, and he gave them authority to do these certain things. 00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:35.839 Like Mark chapter 3 does it. 00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:41.120 Matthew chapter 28, verse 20, what's called the Great Commission is probably the most popular example of it. 00:07:41.279 --> 00:07:43.199 But we skip over the authority part. 00:07:43.439 --> 00:07:50.240 We hear, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I've commanded you. 00:07:50.560 --> 00:07:57.920 But the verse right before that says this Jesus said, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:01.040 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations. 00:08:01.199 --> 00:08:04.879 See, this command to make disciples is predicated on the promise of authority. 00:08:05.040 --> 00:08:09.600 And so here's what I'm saying to you: the spiritual authority that Jesus had that he gave to his disciples. 00:08:09.839 --> 00:08:11.040 Hello, look at me. 00:08:11.199 --> 00:08:14.319 You and I are supposed to have this spiritual authority. 00:08:14.399 --> 00:08:18.079 As a matter of fact, if you've been born again, if you have a relationship with Christ, you do have that. 00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:20.399 You may not know how to use it, but but you have it. 00:08:20.480 --> 00:08:26.319 It's like having features, like, there's features on my phone that I didn't know exist until it gets in interesting to me. 00:08:54.799 --> 00:08:56.399 Now give me my phone back. 00:08:56.639 --> 00:09:01.279 But the same thing, you have this capacity that you're not using because you have spiritual authority. 00:09:01.440 --> 00:09:03.360 Second thing you have is physical dominion. 00:09:03.600 --> 00:09:04.799 You have physical dominion. 00:09:04.960 --> 00:09:06.159 Jesus, he takes authority. 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:10.639 Oh, that's why the Bible says one of his names is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord our God, who heals. 00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:11.440 Now, look at me. 00:09:11.519 --> 00:09:14.879 I'm not one of those people that says, Oh, we don't need medicine and doctors. 00:09:15.039 --> 00:09:15.840 No, not at all. 00:09:16.240 --> 00:09:16.960 God uses that. 00:09:17.039 --> 00:09:19.440 I think doctors and medicine, people's intellect. 00:09:19.519 --> 00:09:23.039 I was praying in a hospital just recently, and the nurse walked in. 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:24.399 I said, Hey, I'm gonna authority and physical dominion. 00:11:20.720 --> 00:11:35.279 And here's my concern: here's what's happened to today's Christians because we cannot experience physical dominion over ourselves, so we take spiritual liberties with the message of Christianity, and in so doing, we promise the crowds what Jesus never would give them and call it evangelism. 00:11:36.480 --> 00:11:43.919 Yeah, we promise the crowds what Jesus would never entrust to them, and we call ourselves as having done evangelism. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:48.399 And what happens is you have big churches full of little lives 00:13:08.720 And he turned and said to them, if anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, even his own life, he cannot be my lives to Jesus. 00:13:53.759 --> 00:13:55.840 And so they're not there to commit to follow Jesus. 00:13:56.000 --> 00:14:02.639 And so the church tells a lie to them and says, Oh, Jesus loves you so
