and titled my sermon, The High Priestly Prayer. 00:04:30.800 --> 00:04:39.519 Um so as you walk into John 17, the first 12 chapters of John are Jesus' public ministry as represented in the Gospel of John. 00:04:39.680 --> 00:04:45.600 And then the next five chapters, 15 through 18, are what most theologians call the private ministry of Jesus. 00:04:45.759 --> 00:04:47.040 That's time with the disciples. 00:04:47.120 --> 00:04:51.439 Um, that is as we read right here his prayers to our Father. 00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:57.759 And so as we enter into John chapter 17, there in verse 1, he has just finished what we call the upper room discourse. 00:04:57.920 --> 00:05:07.519 He has just finished giving instructions, talking about hope in the midst of what is sure to be horrible tribulation for the disciples upon Jesus' arrest. 00:05:07.680 --> 00:05:10.800 He talks about the fact they can have hope and they can have joy. 00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:13.839 Um, and then he begins to pray. 00:05:14.160 --> 00:05:16.879 Neil told you last week as he was praying, he kind of gave you a timeline. 00:05:16.959 --> 00:05:26.639 And so I wanted to do the same because all of these, as Neil and I talked about this sermon series, we wanted all of these to fit within the last week or so of Jesus' time on earth. 00:05:26.879 --> 00:05:32.079 And so as Jesus prays this, as I mentioned before in John chapter 16, he is in the upper room. 00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:36.720 And then from there, we know that in John 18, his next stop will be the garden. 00:05:36.879 --> 00:05:44.480 Um so most theologians believe, and they're all smarter than me, and so I'll agree with them that he is probably still in the upper room. 00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:50.240 There are some folks who would say maybe he prayed this on the walk, um, but he is most probably in the room. 00:05:50.319 --> 00:05:55.199 But whether he is on the walk or in the room, we're less than 24 hours of him going to the cross. Uh but um there was as I studied this over the last several weeks, there were just things that I read that one shaped my understanding, but two, I believe uh shape our understanding of what we were prayer recorded anywhere in Scripture. 00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:46.000 John 17 is certainly the holy of holies of the gospel record. 00:06:46.160 --> 00:06:50.079 And we must approach this chapter in spirit of humility and worship. 00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:53.279 So with that in mind, let's look at John chapter 17. 00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:57.279 I want to read this in entirety, all twenty-six verses with you. 00:06:57.360 --> 00:07:03.279 It says this When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted his eyes up to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. 00:07:03.519 --> 00:07:12.800 Glorify your Son, and the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:19.920 And this is eternal life, that they know you are the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:32.399 I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you would have me do, and now, in this walk to the cross. 00:10:14.240 --> 00:10:20.000 Um one, it depicts in great details, we just read what Christ has accomplished in his earthly life. 00:10:20.159 --> 00:10:25.679 That he came from the Father, that he has made the believers one, just as he is one with the God. 00:10:26.480 --> 00:10:30.240 He's accomplished in his earthly ministry and what is about to happen through crucifixion. 00:10:30.480 --> 00:10:36.399 And two, it is this phenomenal 26-verse picture of Christ's love for us. 00:10:36.879 --> 00:10:40.320 His love for his disciples, his love for us. 00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:47.200 And there's no doubt, you read this, you could spend a month of Sundays or more walking through the high priestly prayer. 00:10:47.279 --> 00:10:48.399 There is a lot here. 00:10:48.720 --> 00:11:02.159 But I truly believe that God wants us to see three things this morning as we understand what it is to know what is coming, to know how it's going to happen, to know when it's going to happen, and how that shapes your understanding, and how it shapes your life. 00:11:02.240 --> 00:11:06.720 Um, and that is not beyond the realm of our understanding this morning, church. 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:09.600 That there are realities that are promised to us. 00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:16.799 There's persecution that's promised to us, there's a broken world that's promised to us, and so in the same way, Jesus walks through that. 00:11:16.879 --> 00:11:22.000 And so, three things that I want us to look at this morning, and more importantly, I think God wants us to look at this morning. 00:11:22.080 --> 00:11:27.279 The first one is this is that God's glory demands obedience. 00:11:27.679 --> 00:11:30.559 That God's glory demands obedience. 00:11:30.720 --> 00:11:41.679 Um, much like in the foundations of baptism when we teach baptism, one of the foundations of the belief and the call to do that is built on the fact that Christ himself was baptized. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:44.000 He demonstrated that baptism. 00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:57.039 In the same way as we talk about this obedience to the Father, Jesus, beautifully, especially right here in this prayer as he talks to his father, discusses obedience and practices obedience. 00:11:57.200 --> 00:12:02.399 But obedience is one of those words that within the church culture, if we're not careful, we shy away from. 00:12:03.120 --> 00:12:10.879 Um even now, as I talk about obedience, some of us, and I'm going to talk about submission, and even more that word, we kind of shrink back at that. 00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:21.120 Um because we, if we're not careful, um, in a very sneaky way, um, we we begin complacency begins to slip in as it pertains to obedience. 00:12:21.200 --> 00:12:22.960 Um tell me if this sounds familiar. 00:12:23.039 --> 00:12:34.720 If you're having conversations about the Bible, you're having spiritual conversations with friends of yours who are believers, maybe they're not believers, co-workers, friends, family, um, and you say things like this. 00:12:34.879 --> 00:12:42.000 Well, what it means to me is Well, when I read this, what it means to me is sneaky, right? 00:12:42.159 --> 00:12:43.120 Does that sound familiar? 00:12:43.679 --> 00:12:51.279 That's that's it doesn't mean to you you're included, and God invites you into it, but what it means is what exactly what God said. 00:12:51.759 --> 00:12:58.720 And so it just starts with a just a simple vernacular as that, and then we begin to lose track of obedience. 00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:05.440 And so, in our effort to fit God into this acceptable deity presentation, we grossly misrepresent God. 00:13:05.679 --> 00:13:10.000 We've taken the God who demands obedience and tried to make him into our favorite advice columnist. 00:13:10.720 --> 00:13:15.679 Christopher Bloom says this there's only one way to glorify God, and that is to obey God. 00:13:17.440 --> 00:13:21.679 So, with all this in mind, what do I mean by God demands obedience? 00:13:21.759 --> 00:13:22.720 Look back at verse one again. 00:13:22.799 --> 00:13:28.000 It says, When Jesus had spoken these words, he give eternal life to all whom have given him. 00:13:49.919 --> 00:14:02.080 So now in verse one, when it says that Jesus had spoken these words, and then he lifted his eyes up to heaven, Jesus is moving the discourse from Jesus and the disciples in the upper room to now Jesus and his father. 00:14:02.320 --> 00:14:05.279 And he says that he looks upward. 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:09.279 And he's taking, what he's doing is he's taking a posture of submission. 00:14:09.440 --> 00:14:11.679 What do I mean by taking a posture of submission? 00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:16.799 When you pray, if you bow is an acknowledgement of obedience and submission. 00:14:26.559 --> 00:14:31.600 Um in our house, we we don't have a ton of hard and fast rules, we have a few. 00:14:31.759 --> 00:14:36.320 And one of the one of the rules at our house is that when mom and dad are talking to you, we make eye contact. 00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:40.000 We we ask our kids to make eye contact with us when we're talking to them. 00:14:40.159 --> 00:14:43.440 Um especially if it's a serious conversation, if it's a shaping conversation. 00:14:43.600 --> 00:14:47.600 I have a six and a three-year-old, so most of our conversations are shaping conversations. 00:14:47.840 --> 00:14:53.840 Um I'm a Sasquatch in physical stature, I understand that. 00:14:53.919 --> 00:15:03.600 And so since I have little ones, most of their eye contact with me, when I ask them to look me in the eye, is looking up at me, looking beyond the distraction of my beard into my eyes, right? 00:15:04.159 --> 00:15:16.559 And so they're looking up, and and and when we have these conversations, as soon as our kids were old enough to talk, my wife Sally and I have been having two continuous, intentional, consistent conversations with our kids. 00:15:16.720 --> 00:15:18.799 And that is mom and dad are in charge. 00:15:19.200 --> 00:15:24.320 Mom and dad are in charge of this house, we're in charge of this family, and that you can then she'll say, Well, Dad, you know, most times when you go on trips, do you trust me? 00:16:00.639 --> 00:16:07.279 And in the same way, Jesus is looking up in obedience and submission to the Father 00:16:37.679 In our understanding of the sovereign prayer that Christ prays in this demonstration, in this last conversation that we are witness to, and the disciples are witness to, we see him giving this radical obedience to the Father. 00:16:37.759 --> 00:16:47.759 And as we understand this sovereign prayer that Christ prays before then going obediently to the cross, there's two things we need to wrap our head around as we understand this obedience that Christ is teaching us. 00:16:47.919 --> 00:16:51.600 One is this question of God submitting to God, right? 00:16:53.279 --> 00:17:01.840 If you believe that Jesus Christ is God, which he is, he is now submitting himself to God the Father, which is God. 00:17:02.480 --> 00:17:10.880 And you're wrapping your head around this obedience of the God man, Jesus Christ, then submitting himself to God. 00:17:11.119 --> 00:17:16.319 It even says that Jesus Christ was present with God at the very beginning. 00:17:16.400 --> 00:17:17.759 Don't turn there, it's going to be on the screen. 00:17:17.839 --> 00:17:26.240 In the very beginning of this book of John, it says this in the beginning was the word, that is Christ, and the word was with 00:17:36.799 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 00:17:36.880 --> 00:17:42.400 And so now we're reading chapter 17, and Jesus, who is eternally God, even before Genesis 1.1. people full of men, and numbers and dozens and dozens of them went down as they began to recognize and admit and confess the things that they believed about themselves, and these obstacles to obeying And these men who had been told or not told things by their mom, and and and loved or not loved by their moms or their grandmothers or their aunts, and so now, um, in the same way that you might not am seeing a man with Korean War veteran hat on weeping, weeping, because there was a man who was given stewardship to be his dad and called to obey, and called to steward that well, and trust God with road to the garden, um, that they heard this. 00:26:51.759 --> 00:27:01.759 And so, why is that a big deal that they hear Jesus talking to his father in this last conversation, really, that we're
