he ties his word together, um pointing to him as Father. 00:04:54.959 --> 00:05:01.199 A couple years ago, we were going through a series of parables, and I got to preach the parable of the prodigal son. 00:05:01.600 --> 00:05:15.680 And today I have this opportunity to preach this passage that is this great representation of one, our Heavenly Father, and two, what our posture should be before the Heavenly Father, what it can be, what it should be. 00:05:16.000 --> 00:05:22.480 And so this morning, we're gonna look at just that in this sermon titled Posture Before Your Father. 00:05:22.800 --> 00:05:24.639 Posture before your father. 00:05:24.879 --> 00:05:31.040 You hear that word posture, and your immediate thoughts maybe go to, hey, sit up straight, don't slouch. 00:05:31.360 --> 00:05:33.040 Um obviously posture. 00:05:33.120 --> 00:05:38.000 Um this week as I tried to think of the best and most tangible illustration for posture. 00:05:38.160 --> 00:05:47.120 I kept striving and trying to be a creative pastor and think of something, some, some neat and innovative way to talk about posture, and then it landed on my lap this Friday. 00:05:47.199 --> 00:05:52.240 Uh went to the woodlands, took my kids with me, um, and we ended up going to a pool there. 00:05:52.319 --> 00:05:55.360 And my daughter, my oldest, wanted to ride the big slide. 00:05:55.680 --> 00:05:58.879 And so for the first time in her life, she had to go pass a swim test. 00:05:59.199 --> 00:06:02.959 Um, and so um I said, You want me to go with you to take the swim test? 00:06:03.040 --> 00:06:04.720 If you met my daughter, this will be no surprise to you. 00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:05.759 She said, No, I got it. 00:06:05.839 --> 00:06:09.360 I'm six years old, I'm taking on the world, so about five minutes, they returned, and I didn't even have to ask how it went. 00:06:19.120 --> 00:06:23.920 Um, my daughter came walking, barely touching the ground, so full of joy and confidence. 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.199 Um, and the two girls behind her crying their eyes out. 00:06:27.279 --> 00:06:33.680 Um, without even asking a question, I could tell by their posture that my daughter had passed the swim test and the other girls had not. 00:06:33.759 --> 00:06:48.480 Um I share that because uh I believe in the same way our posture before our Heavenly Father is not only telling, but it's also representative of if we trust him and as well as how we see ourselves as his children. 00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:54.720 And so as we continue on in Exodus this morning, we see three postures that most of us can relate to today. 00:06:54.879 --> 00:06:59.680 Whether we are in one, we are coming out of one, we're trying to figure out where we are. 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:03.920 The first one we see in this text is the posture of running. 00:07:04.399 --> 00:07:05.759 Is the posture of running. 00:07:05.920 --> 00:07:07.680 What do I mean by a running posture? 00:07:07.839 --> 00:07:10.160 Look back to the beginning of our passage in verse 11. 00:07:10.240 --> 00:07:13.120 I want to read this again with the theme of the posture of running. 00:07:13.199 --> 00:07:20.879 It says, One day when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and he looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. 00:07:21.040 --> 00:07:26.079 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian, and he hid him in the sand. 00:07:26.240 --> 00:07:29.839 And when he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. we have taken the posture of running, if we are in this season of where we are trying to run from God, most of us it's because we've decided that we're just burnt out on being good. 00:08:03.120 --> 00:08:05.040 We're burnt out on doing the right thing. 00:08:05.279 --> 00:08:07.519 We're burnt out on listening to God. 00:08:07.600 --> 00:08:08.639 And Moses felt this way. 00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:09.519 How do we know? 00:08:09.759 --> 00:08:21.360 Because instead of waiting for God to make him prince over his people, which he would, instead of waiting for God's timing to make him judge over their affairs, which he would, he took it into his own hands. 00:08:21.519 --> 00:08:26.560 It says when he grew up, he went outside, he sees this Egyptian beating an Israelite. 00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:32.559 He says he looks left and right, he takes the Egyptian, he strikes him down, he kills him, and he buries him in a shallow grave. 00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:34.480 And you might be thinking, what's the big deal? 00:08:34.720 --> 00:08:35.120 Right? 00:08:35.360 --> 00:08:38.159 He saw injustice, he acted. 00:08:39.679 --> 00:08:44.720 Don't turn there, it's going to be on the screens behind me, but Stephen represents this in the book of Acts. 00:08:45.600 --> 00:08:47.279 This is Acts chapter 7, verse 23. 00:08:47.440 --> 00:08:48.559 It'll be on the screens behind me. 00:08:48.639 --> 00:08:55.279 It says this When he was forty years old, it came into his heart, Moses, to visit his brothers, the children of Israel. 00:08:55.440 --> 00:09:01.600 And seeing one of them being wrong, he defended the oppressed man and he avenged him by striking down the Egyptian. 00:09:02.080 --> 00:09:02.799 Hear this. 00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:10.000 He supposed that his brothers would have understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand. 00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:11.279 Did you hear that? 00:09:11.679 --> 00:09:14.159 Salvation by his hand. 00:09:15.279 --> 00:09:17.840 Moses decided that it was his. 00:09:18.080 --> 00:09:19.600 It's not the killing of the Egyptian. 00:09:19.679 --> 00:09:28.480 And know that theologians for years and will continue for years to debate whether or not this was sin and Moses was wrong for killing the Egyptian. 00:09:28.639 --> 00:09:30.799 It's not that act of doing it. 00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:37.200 It's Moses' posture of deciding that his justice and his wisdom is right. 00:09:37.440 --> 00:09:39.840 And it trumps that of his heavenly father. 00:09:40.080 --> 00:09:44.159 And that's what begins this posture of running that we're looking at. 00:09:44.399 --> 00:09:48.480 And so the question is, how else do you identify your posture of running? 00:09:48.639 --> 00:09:51.200 We talked about the fact that maybe you are just tired of being good. 00:09:51.279 --> 00:09:54.399 You've been good, you've done the right thing your whole life, and you're just done. 00:09:54.480 --> 00:09:55.360 You've been burnt. 00:09:55.440 --> 00:09:59.440 You haven't been rewarded like you think you should be rewarded for doing the right thing. 00:09:59.679 --> 00:10:05.440 And so then, either subconsciously or consciously, you take on this posture of running. 00:10:05.919 --> 00:10:09.679 You find yourself always hiding or having to make excuses for what you're doing. 00:10:09.840 --> 00:10:11.759 What do I mean by hiding or making excuses? 00:10:11.919 --> 00:10:13.360 Look at verse 12 again. 00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:19.919 It says, He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and he hid him in the sand. 00:10:20.080 --> 00:10:24.480 If what you're doing is okay and your posture is right with God, why do you have to hide it? 00:10:25.440 --> 00:10:26.799 I'm going to talk to this side. 00:10:26.960 --> 00:10:34.080 If your posture is right and what you're doing is correct and honoring to God, then why do you have to hide it? 00:10:34.559 --> 00:10:37.600 But yet we see Moses in this posture of running. 00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:38.399 And why? 00:10:38.559 --> 00:10:43.600 Way back in the dawn of creation, when Adam and Eve lived life in the garden, they had a pretty sweet deal, right? 00:10:44.320 --> 00:10:46.720 Until until that was a good accent. 00:10:47.279 --> 00:10:53.120 Until they they began to make mistakes and begin to think that they knew better than God. 00:10:53.759 --> 00:10:58.159 But before that happened, if you read in Genesis 2.25, it says that they felt no shame. 00:10:58.320 --> 00:10:59.039 Remember that? 00:10:59.279 --> 00:11:01.440 It says they were naked and they felt no shame. 00:11:01.600 --> 00:11:07.279 But look how the tables turn once they be think they once they begin to think that they are in control. 00:11:07.519 --> 00:11:16.320 Genesis 3.8, it says, Toward the evening they heard the Lord God walking about in the garden, so they hid themselves among the trees. 00:11:16.559 --> 00:11:18.080 Basically, God's coming. 00:11:18.240 --> 00:11:20.080 Quick, go hide in the trees. 00:11:20.320 --> 00:11:27.120 I remember even as a really young believer, one of the first things I was ever asked to teach was Genesis 3. 00:11:27.200 --> 00:11:35.759 And I remember teaching Genesis 3, and it was ludicrous 20 years ago, and it is ludicrous today that you could actually convince yourself that you could hide from God. 00:11:36.000 --> 00:11:36.399 Right? 00:11:36.720 --> 00:11:42.480 Quick, go run in the trees and hide from omnipresent, all-seeing, all-knowing God. 00:11:42.879 --> 00:11:50.159 But the sad thing is, is this incident begins and it marks the beginning of humankind's tendency to try to hide from God. 00:11:50.399 --> 00:11:52.879 We're still trying to hide from God today. 00:11:55.200 --> 00:12:00.480 What we have to remember, church, is that whatever is done in secret is not really secret at all. 00:12:01.120 --> 00:12:02.480 I'm gonna say that of mine uh this week whose name rhymes with Neil McClendon, and he said something to the effect of if I was preaching this passage, I would ask how many people have buried some sins in the sand, and
