group of individuals that like ourselves a whole lot, and so community, uh we think we know what it is, but we all of a sudden start pursuing it for our own good. 00:02:12.560 --> 00:02:14.639 Uh a --> 00:02:36.159 If you want to have a bunch of people follow you, go to the bathroom, whatever you're doing, that's fine. 00:02:36.319 --> 00:02:42.319 But the reality is there's got to be something more with more gravity in your life than status updates. 00:02:42.479 --> 00:02:56.319 There's got to be something in your life, someone that's face-to-face, lunches, community groups, whatever, to where your life can actually be changed literally into the image of God, in the image of Christ. 00:02:56.560 --> 00:03:03.919 We are individuals and yet we're connected in more ways than ever before Um Barna, George Barna, if you don't know who George Barna is, uh, he's kind of like the gallop of Christianity. 00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:30.719 And uh he put out a study not too long ago that said only 17% of Christians believe that being a part of a local community of faith is vital to their spiritual formation or their growth in Christ. 00:03:31.039 --> 00:03:31.680 17%. 00:03:32.080 --> 00:03:34.080 That's less than one in five. 00:03:34.319 --> 00:03:40.319 So if you look down the row and you see four people down there, you need to condemn them or whatever, because it's you, right? not talking about this, if you go to church for 10 years and just come to big church or worship service and never get involved into the veins and the life, the lifeblood of a church, you will come that, right? 00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:23.519 Inflates my numbers, it gets me job security, I like all that good stuff, but that's not what I'm going to do today. 00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:29.920 I'm not --> 00:06:00.319 The reason why we may not get involved is because we don't understand who we are. 00:06:00.720 --> 00:06:03.040 But here's what I want you to understand of who you are today. preview of the sermon right now. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:37.839 But here's the reality is that when Jesus came to earth, he prayed that we would have the kind of community that's found in the Trinity. 00:06:38.399 --> 00:06:49.519 Now I've said the word, I've said Trinity in church, and so we all have just lost ourselves and now we're just enveloped in this big cloud of I have no idea, of mystery. 00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:54.000 But let's look at the scriptures and let's understand really who God is. 00:06:54.240 --> 00:07:00.160 Uh, because when I mentioned what I was gonna talk about last night to a friend of mine, I said, Yeah, it's gonna be all based on the Trinity. 00:07:00.240 --> 00:07:02.399 I'm a little concerned about it, but we're gonna run with it. 00:07:02.639 --> 00:07:05.839 He goes, Are you gonna use the word Trinity? 00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:08.399 Yeah, yeah, yeah, I am. 00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:09.439 I'm gonna use the word trinity. 00:07:09.519 --> 00:07:12.560 I know it's not found in the Bible, uh, but it's all over the place. 00:07:12.720 --> 00:07:13.839 I'm gonna show you that today. 00:07:13.920 --> 00:07:18.959 Uh turn with me to page one in your Bible, Genesis 1, 26 and 27. 00:07:19.120 --> 00:07:24.639 We'll read here first, and then we will jump off uh into other places in Scripture. 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:27.680 Genesis 1, 26 and 27. 00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:32.639 This is really where we find our first point of our sermon today and of our time together, and that is this. 00:07:32.800 --> 00:07:34.160 We were created for community. 00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:35.120 It's pretty simple. 00:07:35.439 --> 00:07:36.959 1 26 and 27. 00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:45.680 Then God said, He's right in the middle of creation, he's created everything except man, and now he's gonna write out what he's gonna create in man and how. 00:07:45.839 --> 00:07:47.040 Let us make man. 00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:48.639 Verse 26. 00:07:48.959 --> 00:07:53.839 Then God said, Let us make man in our image after our likeness. 00:07:54.079 --> 00:08:03.600 And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth. 00:08:04.079 --> 00:08:06.560 So God created man in his own image. 00:08:06.800 --> 00:08:09.120 And in the image of God he created him. 00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:13.279 Male and female, he created them. 00:08:14.079 --> 00:08:15.759 Male and female, he created them. 00:08:15.839 --> 00:08:18.720 Now, what's really important in all this are two words. 00:08:18.879 --> 00:08:30.959 And if you're anything like me, uh I did for years, just ran past these verses with no real good comprehension of what God was trying to tell me and what he was really trying to communicate about himself. 00:08:31.120 --> 00:08:40.000 And it's two words in that first, uh, that first verse, verse 26, let us make man in our image. 00:08:40.480 --> 00:08:44.240 Now he's not talking about three gods because that's not the God of the Bible. 00:08:44.559 --> 00:08:53.120 Instead, he's talking about this one God who eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 00:08:53.279 --> 00:09:00.000 Let us, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, make man in our Father, Son, Holy Spirit image. 00:09:00.320 --> 00:09:02.559 And God is yet one. 00:09:03.039 --> 00:09:05.919 That's what I put on the front of your bulletin today. 00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:11.519 Uh I said in the first service, and I'll say it again, that's not like a 1996 tribal art tattoo idea. The big circle is God. 00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:18.720 That's what it represents. 00:09:18.879 --> 00:09:23.919 And yet the smaller, kind of intertwining uh circles, that's Father, Son, Holy Spirit. just heard a sermon on the Trinity, and that's pretty much all you're going to understand. 00:09:36.799 --> 00:09:44.320 Because God is so mysterious and so much bigger than we could ever imagine, we can never understand the Trinity. 00:09:44.559 --> 00:09:50.960 And so instead of kind of running from it, which most of us have done, or abandon it altogether, let's not talk about it. 00:09:51.200 --> 00:09:56.639 Instead, God's calling us to understand what Augustine understood, right behind me. 00:09:56.879 --> 00:10:02.720 The Trinity reveals that the very life of God is a life of intimate relationship. 00:10:02.879 --> 00:10:04.720 And we'll never understand that. 00:10:05.279 --> 00:10:09.120 We'll never understand the arithmetic that goes with the Trinity. 00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:14.879 It's not like an egg, it's not like water, it's not like anything else you have imagined in your life. 00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:21.200 And so instead of trying to figure it out, which we're 00:10:53.360 --> 00:11:04.000 And if you don't like that, then perhaps it'd be like a piece of peanut butter smothered in caramel or caramel as anybody likes to say, except for me, caramel uh wrapped outside of chocolate. 00:11:04.159 --> 00:11:07.519 And the reason why I say that, that's not like the Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:12.240 I'm saying it's so good that 00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:25.919 And it's this grand circle, this grand dance of just loving on each other and giving to one another and pointing to each other and saying, You get the credit. to fly and fish created to swim, we were created for community. 00:12:50.080 --> 00:12:56.960 As surely as the birds were created to fly, which of course is natural, and fish created to swim, well, yeah, that's their native environment. 00:12:57.279 --> 00:13:00.559 We were created for community. 00:13:01.360 --> 00:13:07.840 Let me just continue to read on in Genesis, because if we flip the page to page two, things get really interesting. 00:13:08.399 --> 00:13:26.720 If we find in Genesis 2, 18, this statement from God, God has gotten done creating everything, and he's looked down, and Adam has named all the animals, and he's looked down, he's looked at man, and God says to him, It is not good that the man should be alone. 00:13:28.879 --> 00:13:31.120 Let me explain to you why this is so profound. 00:13:32.080 --> 00:13:38.000 Because Adam finds himself in the middle of the garden, and sin has not yet come into the world. 00:13:38.879 --> 00:13:44.320 And yet God looks down at man and said, You and me are not good enough. 00:13:45.519 --> 00:13:46.559 You need something more. 00:13:46.720 --> 00:13:51.279 I've created you for something more than just you and me. 00:13:51.840 --> 00:14:00.879 And so if we have this the stance where we just say, Well, it's just me and my Bible and Jesus, and that's all I need, God is saying to us, that's not good. 00:14:02.000 --> 00:14:03.200 We need more than that. 00:14:03.759 --> 00:14:06.799 This is a good start, spiritual intimacy, yes. 00:14:07.360 --> 00:14:15.120 But in order for you to grow, in order for you to absolutely necessary in our core for us to connect with other people, not just with God, not just worship, but also service. 00:14:38.320 --> 00:14:44.639 There must be something else that we can learn from this because I see all that and I go, okay, it's not good, but what is good? 00:14:44.799 --> 00:14:51.600 What does it look like to have the kind of community that you created us for before the fall of man, before Genesis 3? 00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:57.200 It's in fact found right there at the end of Genesis 2. 00:14:57.759 --> 00:15:00.720 This is what it looks like to be inside That's biblical community. 00:15:11.120 --> 00:15:22.399 That is standing in front of someone else, completely exposed to all of your insecurities, all of your moles, all of whatever else you got, and you're just saying, I'm not ashamed. 00:15:22.960 --> 00:15:25.200 This is what God created us for. 00:15:26.240 --> 00:15:35.919 And we read this and we go, okay, they were naked, not ashamed, and we just think of it as a physical thing, like Adam and Eve really love naked time, like they're your kids after bathtime and they're just running around crazy. 00:15:36.159 --> 00:15:38.000 But there's more to it than that. 00:15:38.960 --> 00:15:45.440 It's the spiritual side of us that says, you know what, I have this innate desire to just be known. 00:15:45.679 --> 00:15:49.600 And to just open
