00:07:21.279 I read the whole psalm, but I just want to preach from the first five verses this morning. 00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:23.600 There's three things I want to extrapolate out of the text. 00:07:23.680 --> 00:07:27.199 And the first one, when we've messed up, here's three things we need to remember. 00:07:27.279 --> 00:07:30.000 Number one, the Bible assumes our sinfulness. 00:07:30.240 --> 00:07:32.240 The Bible assumes our sinfulness. 00:07:32.319 --> 00:07:33.439 That's verse one and two. 00:07:33.920 --> 00:07:38.079 David says, Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 00:07:38.240 --> 00:07:40.959 Right off the get-go, God kind of says, let's don't kid each other. 00:07:41.120 --> 00:07:46.800 The Bible says in Romans chapter 3 in the New Testament, he says, we've all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. 00:07:46.879 --> 00:07:58.560 So when I say the Bible assumes our sinfulness, this is not a statement of condemnation, but it's establishing this baseline reality because we live in a culture that kind of sells us the lie that man is inherently good. 00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:00.720 Now think just for a minute, beloved, okay? 00:08:01.120 --> 00:08:06.959 We live in a culture that everything, the media, everything, kind of tries to convince you that man is inherently good. 00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:20.800 This past week, big news story on Good Morning America, ABC, World News Tonight, 70 people, 65, 70 people in Panama City Beach, Florida, saw a family caught in an undertone and they made a human chain and they got out there, they rescued the family. 00:08:21.040 --> 00:08:22.959 That is great, and that's what we should do. 00:08:23.120 --> 00:08:24.720 But the media cannot help themselves. 00:08:24.879 --> 00:08:30.000 They said, this is just another example of the inherent goodness of human nature. 00:08:32.320 --> 00:08:34.159 I would balk at that part of it. 00:08:34.240 --> 00:08:36.159 And you say, I don't know what you mean. 00:08:36.399 --> 00:08:42.000 See, here's the thing: if man is inherently good, then there's a lot of things that are unnecessary. 00:08:42.159 --> 00:08:46.240 Uh, there's some questions you have to answer, like I just kind of put the questions up here. 00:08:46.399 --> 00:08:47.600 You don't have to try to jot them down. 00:08:47.679 --> 00:08:49.519 You can whip out your phone and take a picture if you want. 00:08:49.679 --> 00:08:53.440 But if man is inherently good, then you've got to ask yourself, why do you need God? 00:08:53.600 --> 00:08:55.679 Is the existence of God even necessary? 00:08:55.840 --> 00:08:59.600 How does the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus make any sense? 00:08:59.919 --> 00:09:03.279 What is there to be redeemed for from or for? 00:09:04.240 --> 00:09:06.080 If man is inherently good. 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:10.799 Uh fourthly, is there an objective moral standard by which all of life is evaluated? 00:09:12.399 --> 00:09:16.240 Because if man is inherently good, then you're all free to live in light of your own goodness. 00:09:16.399 --> 00:09:20.480 Just what you defeat, what how you define good and how you your own destiny. 00:09:58.960 --> 00:10:11.200 And by the way, when I say the Bible assumes our sinfulness, if this isn't true, and by this I mean the doctrine of total depravity, uh, the inherent 00:10:35.759 And they're like, you're supposed to be helping me. 00:10:35.919 --> 00:10:41.360 No, I'm not supposed to give you religious pep talks that insulate you from the reality of living in a fallen world. 00:10:41.519 --> 00:10:57.759 See, that's one of the things, again, if man is inherently good, if you think man does not need God, he does not need redemption, he's not a sinner, he isn't he is just inherent by nature, he is a good person, she's a good woman, then you have to ask yourself this fundamental question of human existence. 00:10:57.919 --> 00:10:59.440 What went wrong? don't believe in anything, or I don't believe in this specific God, and then all of a sudden, when when man is good, because if man is good, how do you explain the two boys up in Ohio that shot four 00:12:03.679 How do you explain that? 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:15.120 But see, we live in a culture that kind of it just kind of seeps into our culture, into our dialect, into our music, into our 00:12:21.759 --> 00:12:23.679 This is a quote from a guy named Tim Keller. 00:12:23.840 --> 00:12:27.919 He says this we are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe. 00:12:28.159 --> 00:12:33.919 Yet at the same time, we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope for. 00:12:34.480 --> 00:12:35.440 Hear that again. 00:12:35.679 --> 00:12:39.519 We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe. 00:12:39.679 --> 00:12:41.039 You've got to accept that. 00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:42.960 And here's what allows you to Bible assumes our sinfulness, that's why David begins this psalm just by saying, Hey, by the way, blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 00:13:01.200 -->
