00:02:42.800 --> 00:02:44.319 Not so you'll feel sorry for me. 00:02:44.479 --> 00:02:48.240 I took out my revenge and painted my name on the water tower in John Deere Green. 00:02:48.319 --> 00:02:52.319 But anyway, that's a whole nother story that involved alcohol. 00:02:52.400 --> 00:02:55.120 But anyway, I was not a Christian back then. 00:02:55.439 --> 00:02:58.159 Some of y'all are going, go back to the story about the water tower. 00:02:58.240 --> 00:02:59.280 I want to hear more about that. 00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:04.960 Paul's writing to the Gentiles, people had idols and they were involved in gross immorality. 00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:11.199 And the Jews, the religious people that had church clothes, they looked down on them and said, Oh, y'all are a bunch of bad people, I'll tell you what. 00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:13.680 And they went out and did the same thing. 00:03:14.240 --> 00:03:15.520 Paul's writing to them now. 00:03:15.599 --> 00:03:28.400 In chapter 2, verse 1, he says, This Therefore, you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges, for in passing judgment on another, you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. 00:03:28.639 --> 00:03:33.120 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who do such things. 00:03:33.439 --> 00:03:40.560 Do you suppose, O man, you who judge those who do such things and yet do them yourself, that you'll escape the judgment of God? 00:03:40.800 --> 00:03:49.039 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 00:03:49.280 --> 00:03:57.759 But because of your hard and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God's righteous judgment will be revealed. 00:03:57.919 --> 00:04:00.240 He will render to each one according to his works. 00:04:00.400 --> 00:04:07.199 To those who by patience and well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 00:04:07.360 --> 00:04:13.280 For those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 00:04:13.439 --> 00:04:19.759 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first, but also for the Greek. 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:26.160 But glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 00:04:26.480 --> 00:04:35.519 For God shows no partiality, for all who sin without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:41.759 For it's not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 00:04:41.920 --> 00:04:52.639 For when Gentiles who do not have the law, for when Gentiles who do not have church close, don't know the rules, don't read the Bible, but by nature do what the law requires. 00:04:52.800 --> 00:04:54.800 Translation, do the right thing. 00:04:55.120 --> 00:04:59.439 They are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 00:04:59.680 --> 00:05:14.560 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them on that day when according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. 00:05:14.800 --> 00:05:20.319 It's easy to read this passage of Scripture and think it's about judgment or judging, and it's not. 00:05:20.480 --> 00:05:22.079 It's actually about hypocrisy. 00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:28.079 And that's why I want to talk to you this morning from Romans chapter 2 about five things that every hypocrite should know. 00:05:28.399 --> 00:05:31.120 Five things that every hypocrite should know. 00:05:31.279 --> 00:05:36.240 And the first one is found in verse 4, and it's simply this how you think about God matters. 00:05:36.480 --> 00:05:41.360 How you and I think about God matters, because look at it again. 00:05:41.600 --> 00:05:48.240 Paul says in verse 3, our verse 2 actually, he says, We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who do such things. 00:05:48.399 --> 00:05:50.000 And then he asks this question, verse 3. 00:05:50.160 --> 00:06:02.639 He says, Hey, do you suppose, O man, you who judge those who do such things and yet do them yourselves, you two-faced religious weasels, do you think that you'll escape the judgment of God? 00:06:02.879 --> 00:06:12.079 Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? 00:06:12.240 --> 00:06:16.879 The first thing the hypocrite needs to know is how you think about God matters. 00:06:16.959 --> 00:06:19.759 And it's found in that phrase where he says, or do you presume? 00:06:20.000 --> 00:06:20.879 Do you presume? 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:26.480 That's not a phrase we use a lot, but basically what it means is to think lightly of. 00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:34.959 To think lightly is he said, Hey, do you presume, do you think lightly of the kindness of God, the forbearance or the tolerance of God, and the patience of God? 00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:36.879 How do you think lightly about that? 00:06:37.120 --> 00:06:39.360 Well, let me just start with my own life. 00:06:39.439 --> 00:06:43.920 There have been periods in my life where I did not do the right thing. 00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:46.319 Like when I knew I was called to ministry, I ran. 00:06:46.399 --> 00:06:50.800 And one of the reasons I ran from the call to ministry were preachers were the most phony people I'd ever knew. 00:06:50.879 --> 00:06:53.360 And I thought to myself, I can't be like those people. 00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:54.480 I don't want to do that. 00:06:54.639 --> 00:06:56.000 That would be horrible. 00:06:56.160 --> 00:07:00.319 So for a period in my life I thought, I'll just show God how unworthy I am. 00:07:00.480 --> 00:07:06.319 There was a period where I look back on that and I just think, man, God, why didn't you just kill me for being such a goofball? 00:07:06.399 --> 00:07:13.519 I know I'm probably the only one here that's ever had a period in your life where you just thought, man, God, is it any wonder why you didn't kill me? 00:07:13.680 --> 00:07:18.240 You could have killed me and taken me home to heaven and just been and still been a loving God. 00:07:18.399 --> 00:07:20.000 I'm probably the only one that's thought that, right? 00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:23.360 That knew you were wrong and wondered at the mercy of God, right? 00:07:23.439 --> 00:07:24.800 I'm the only one, correct? 00:07:29.279 --> 00:07:30.959 You ever wonder why he didn't? 00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:33.040 If you got your Bible, I'll show you. 00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:37.759 Romans, if you're in Romans, just turn back to Acts chapter 14, just one book to the left. 00:07:38.000 --> 00:07:40.000 If you go to the right, you're gonna hit some maps. 00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:40.720 That's too far. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:46.959 Turn back to the left, Acts chapter 14, and if you it'll probably come up on the screen if you don't have your Bible with you. 00:07:47.040 --> 00:07:47.839 But I want you to see this. 00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:54.000 Paul and Barnabas are in a city called Lystra, and they just healed a man, or God's healed a man through them. 00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:59.120 But in chapter 14 of Acts, but certainly in verse 15, Paul says this. 00:07:59.279 --> 00:08:01.519 He says, Men, why are you doing these things? 00:08:01.600 --> 00:08:03.600 Because they rushed out to them like they were gods. 00:08:03.680 --> 00:08:06.000 They wanted to make Paul and Barnabas gods. 00:08:06.079 --> 00:08:08.720 And he says, Men, why are you doing these things? 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:13.040 Or who also, we we also are men of like nature with you. 00:08:13.199 --> 00:08:22.160 And we bring you good news that you should turn from these vain things to a living God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. 00:08:22.480 --> 00:08:23.439 Look at verse 16. 00:08:23.600 --> 00:08:28.480 In past generations, he allowed all the nations to walk in their ways. 00:08:28.639 --> 00:08:30.560 Now just that is a pregnant sentence. 00:08:30.639 --> 00:08:31.439 Just hear it again. 00:08:31.600 --> 00:08:33.120 In past generations. 00:08:33.519 --> 00:08:34.879 We don't know how many that is. 00:08:35.120 --> 00:08:39.279 A generation is considered to be, in modern-day vernacular, 40 years. 00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:51.919 And he says, in past generations, for a long time, he, God, allowed all the nations, not just people, but all the nations to walk in their own ways. 00:08:52.080 --> 00:08:57.200 You can't come here and sit in here this morning and think, well, God's some bully that's out to get people. 00:08:57.279 --> 00:09:00.639 If you do wrong, he zaps you with lightning and just kills you. 00:09:00.799 --> 00:09:02.000 That's not true. 00:09:02.399 --> 00:09:04.000 That's not true at all. 00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:09.279 But you can't presume, you can't think lightly about the nature of God. 00:09:09.440 --> 00:09:10.399 You say, why?
