when you think about the good news, most people think about the New Testament, which is Jesus comes. 00:17:32.960 --> 00:17:37.359 And a lot of people, I've had people say to me, I don't like old God talk. 00:18:53.759 --> 00:18:58.480 And so everyone was gathering to listen to him, and they like, we've got to do something about this. 00:18:58.640 --> 00:19:05.359 And so they couldn't do anything, commanded us to stone such women. 00:19:37.519 --> 00:19:38.640 What do you say? 00:19:39.279 --> 00:19:43.519 This they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. --> 00:20:21.839 I want to here's what I want to do this morning. 00:20:21.920 --> 00:20:23.279 I want to make three points right out of the Bible. 00:20:23.359 --> 00:20:29.359 I want to point to three things in the Bible, and then I want to give you four or five questions just to kind of reflectively think about. 00:20:29.440 --> 00:20:33.039 And the first point I want to make is simply this is that Jesus upholds the law. 00:20:33.279 --> 00:20:34.480 Jesus upholds the law. 00:20:34.720 --> 00:20:35.519 You say, what do you mean? 00:20:35.680 --> 00:20:37.519 In verse 5, this is kind of where they start. 00:20:37.599 --> 00:20:41.599 They say, now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. 00:20:41.759 --> 00:20:53.119 Now they've invoked two sacred things in New Testament time: the law of God, I mean the Old Testament, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, the law, and Moses. 00:20:53.440 --> 00:20:56.079 It's like a Republican bringing up Ronald Reagan, okay? 00:20:56.319 --> 00:21:02.480 If you ever notice that, the closer anytime someone's running for president, they start quoting Ronald Reagan over and over and over and over. 00:21:02.799 --> 00:21:04.960 Moses was like that for these people. 00:21:05.039 --> 00:21:13.200 It was kind of like two sacred things in the law, Moses, and in their mind, they're just smiling because they've kind of backed Jesus into a corner. 00:21:13.359 --> 00:21:16.319 In the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. 00:21:16.480 --> 00:21:17.839 So what do you say? 00:21:18.079 --> 00:21:22.000 They said this to test him that he might have some basis to bring a charge against him. 00:21:22.079 --> 00:21:25.200 Now, when I say Jesus upholds the law, they start with the law. 00:21:25.440 --> 00:21:27.119 Now, why is this a big deal? 00:21:27.279 --> 00:21:28.799 This is a big deal for three reasons. 00:21:28.960 --> 00:21:30.000 Number one, historically. 00:21:30.160 --> 00:21:38.079 It's a big deal historically because if Jesus breaks the law, then he's guilty of sin, and therefore he's in need of forgiveness and redemption, just like the rest of us. 00:21:38.240 --> 00:21:44.319 And so if Jesus breaks the law, who dies on the cross in Jesus' place for the sins of Jesus? 00:21:44.880 --> 00:21:46.640 You got a problem right off the bat. 00:21:46.880 --> 00:21:51.039 So that when I say Jesus upholds the law, it's a big deal historically in three contexts. 00:21:51.200 --> 00:21:53.359 Historically, secondly, situationally. 00:21:53.920 --> 00:22:01.359 Situationally, because they think they've kind of pinned him down, and now the people will turn on him because if he violates the law and most Moses, oh, it goes against Moses. 00:22:01.599 --> 00:22:03.759 They're like, oh man, we got you now. 00:22:04.000 --> 00:22:06.880 Thirdly, the context is currently. 00:22:07.200 --> 00:22:08.720 Currently, what what I mean? 00:22:08.880 --> 00:22:16.240 We live in a culture that takes one verse out of this passage and builds a worldview around it, and it's all the Bible they know, so it applies to everything. 00:22:16.559 --> 00:22:20.079 There's most people you meet on the street, they don't know anything about the Bible, but they know two verses. 00:22:20.160 --> 00:22:22.319 Number one, judge not lest you also be judged. 00:22:22.559 --> 00:22:25.759 Number two, whoever's without sin, let them be the first throw stone. 00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:27.359 Who am I to judge you? 00:22:27.599 --> 00:22:33.920 And so I get that, and I get why that universally appeals to people, but here's the problem: you end up with a culture. 00:22:34.079 --> 00:22:35.279 Now, now think about this. 00:22:35.759 --> 00:22:43.279 When I describe this, there's probably not a culture anywhere in the world that exists like this, but if we're not careful, it will happen. 00:22:43.359 --> 00:22:54.319
