Bloomsday in Andalusia

Noonday Juneday heat hounds my shadow, rapt

Captive to these dead-beat sleeping dog days.

Vapour trails uncertain chords on broken

Strings, notes vanishing into distant haze.

Insistent sweat prickles, trickles salty

Streams down skin unseasoned, pinkly pale. Sun

Jades shade greenly, ushering me to view

Her avocados’ roots that spread and run

Tunnelling in secret communion.

Ragged heads droop resigned, hushed and blushing

At daydreams of skirts, zephyr-filled, fickle,

Tickled by wind’s promise gushing, rushing,

Whispering lies through banana frond fans,

“Dance the romance of summer’s sarabande.
