As Americans celebrate Independence Day, Orthodox Christians have much to be grateful for, especially the freedom to worship, raise our families in the faith, and pursue holiness without fear of persecution.

But gratitude also comes with responsibility.

In this homily, Fr. Theophan reflects on the Christian calling to transform society not primarily through political power, but through repentance, sanctity, love of neighbor, and faithful witness. The Gospel does not merely call us to vote correctly or complain about culture—it calls us to become the kind of people through whom others encounter Christ.

If our nation is to be renewed, it will not happen through worldly power alone. It will happen through Christians who genuinely live the faith, embody the love of Christ, and become a light to those around them.

Homily preached at St. Innocent Orthodox Church (OCA).

Christ is in our midst!
