Seeing Christ and Serving Others: The Example of St. Herman of Alaska
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this homily, we reflect on the Feast of the Transfiguration and the Christian calling to behold Christ and be transformed by His uncreated light.
The life of St. Herman of Alaska gives us a practical example of what this transformation looks like. While St. Herman is remembered for miracles and his deep life of prayer, he is also remembered for something much more ordinary: serving those around him. He cared for orphans, taught children, advocated for indigenous people who were being abused, counseled families, worked with his hands, preached the Gospel, and served those who were vulnerable and in need.
The Christian life calls us both to contemplation and to service—to seek Christ in prayer and silence, while also bringing His love to our neighbors through concrete works of mercy.
May the prayers and example of St. Herman of Alaska help us to draw closer to Christ and become servants to those who need us.
Christ is in our midst!
