Lukas was the trainer of 23 AQHA champions during his career as a Quarter Horse trainer, predominantly seeing the most success while racing and training in California during the 1970's. In 1980, Lukas switched his attention to training Thoroughbreds and went on to become one of the greatest Thoroughbred race horse trainers of all time. His shift to Thoroughbreds from Quarter Horses pathed the path for Hall of Fame trainers like Bob Baffert, and Steve Asmussen who both have Quarter Horse racing backgrounds.<p>
