It's the evolution of how the quarter horse racing world is entertained and informed. It's Quarter Horse Racing Talk Weekly for Wednesday, April 15th. From the breeding shed to the sales ring, where we talk to the legends and the newsmakers.
SPEAKER_12And from the winner's circle to the front page of stallionesearch.com, we've got it covered.
SPEAKER_04Introducing our host, Greg Thompson, and co-host Bailey Ivy. It's Quarter Horse Racing Talk Weekly.
SPEAKER_14And hello again, everyone.com here for Quarter Horse Racing Talk Weekly.
SPEAKER_20And I'm Bailey Ivy.
SPEAKER_14Hey Bailey, a lot of great racing coming up this weekend in Oklahoma City. And super excited about all these graded stakes to see a lot of things happen this weekend, a lot of categories being sorted out of who's the top dog and whatever category that's that's going to go down the racetrack this weekend.
SPEAKER_20Yes, Greg, we're joined by an outstanding group of guests, including trainers and connections, who will be right in the middle of the action.
SPEAKER_14Yeah, I think we had more guests this week, Bailey, on this podcast than we've ever had before. I think that I think we set the record this week.
SPEAKER_20I think so too. And I think that people will really like it, getting to dive into how the horses have been training and get kind of the behind-the-scenes experience.
SPEAKER_14So what we've done with this week, we've really focused about doing the previous section. We were joined by a colleague of ours. He's son of Tony Guiman, a quarter horse jockey from from yesteryear. And Yancey is uh Guiman is from Utah, came on, told us all about how he's just absolutely in love with quarter horse racing, as well as he spends a lot of time handicapping these races. So Bailey and I thought it would be great to have him join us in the preview section since there's so many races to preview.
SPEAKER_20Yancey gave great insight, and as always, our goal is to bring everyone closer to the sport with analysis, conversations, and people who want to continue to shape quarter horse racing at the highest level.
SPEAKER_14Bailey, we touched base with racing secretary Mike Acton down at Sam Houston, which is just about to kick off the quarter horse meet of 2026. A lot of great things happening. You know, that stakes calendar down there in Houston is absolutely chopped full of steaks, and it should be super exciting down there in Houston.
SPEAKER_20Yes, Greg, the Sam Houston meet is just stacked full with great stakes races, and I first see me making a few trips down there for some big races.
SPEAKER_14Yes, hopefully they turn the AC on for us down there, Bailey, when we get down there, so it'll be a little bit cooler as well as maybe do something about the mosquitoes. So, but with that being said, we'll be right back after these words from our sponsor.
SPEAKER_00The Heritage Place Quarter Horse Yearling sale has moved its dates to September 16th, 17th, 18th, and 19th. Consignment deadline is June 17th. Don't miss your chance.
SPEAKER_14All right, the standout sire spotlight for Dunn Ranch this week goes to In Hot Pursuit, the multiple Grade 1 place brother to two-time champion hot stepper. As In Hot Pursuit was the runner-up finisher in the Grade 1 Edberg Million Faturity, as well as a third place finisher in the Golden State Million Friturity, another grade one event. He ended his career with$358,000 earned on the racetrack and is standing at Dunn Ranch in Winniewood, Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_04Also standing is champion and grade one producer A Revenant, the brother to a two-time champion of champions winner, a political victory, the multiple Grade 1 producing sire, Chilitos, and the graded stakes winning Juices Loose, and the Grade 1 producer, PYC Fun and Fancy, all standing at Dunn Ranch in Winniewood, Oklahoma. The Recap section, powered by StallionESearch.com.
SPEAKER_14Alright, Bailey, a real short recap section in this week's edition of Quarter Horse Racing Talk Weekly, and we go out to Sunray Park for the restricted Grade 3 New Mexico Breeder Stakes, a$70,000 event for three-year-olds that happened on April the 10th, going 400 yards, and here's the call.
SPEAKER_18They're running in the New Mexico Breeders stays. Good break by all. Woodcoming has speed, right alongside the gun. Then we have Lucky Lodging outside. Just fire up dock. It's wide open, even the green. HM Big Dad Relentless. Now it's HM Big Dad Relentless pulling away. Just fire up dock coming at him. And it's gonna be a photo for the win. I think HM Big Dad Relentless.
SPEAKER_20HM Big Dad Relentless is a three-year-old cult by Big Daddy Cartel out of the He's Relentless Mare Relentless Concierge. Bread and owned by Nerberto Perez, trained by Jorge Morales, and ridden by jockey Jesse Lee Lavario.
SPEAKER_03The preview section, powered by stallionesearch.com.
SPEAKER_14Alright, we're back here on Quarter Horse Racing Talk Weekly, ready to jump into the preview section and joining us this week, Bailey. You're not the only racing royalty on this show this week. We got Yancey Guyman, son of jockey Tony Guyman. Yancey's joining us from where are you at, Yancey?
SPEAKER_21I'm in Blandine, Utah.
SPEAKER_14Well, welcome on the show, Yancey's. Really passionate about handicapping and quarter horse ranks, as well as we're going to put him to the test here, Bailey. What do you think?
SPEAKER_20I'm ready.
SPEAKER_14Yes. Alright, we're gonna get into the gigantic weekend of racing there at Remington Park. Starting with Friday's card, the SLM Big Daddy Stakes kicks it off. It's a grade to event at the awkward distance of 550 yards.
SPEAKER_20Why is it awkward, Greg?
SPEAKER_14Because they don't run these 550 races hardly ever. Duh. So the 550 race, uh there's so many variables. I think a lot of these horses in this race, guys, are looking at let's just see if these horses can go this distance.
SPEAKER_20Yes, I agree, Greg. And the two to one favorite is One Fabulous Boy, which has gone this distance before and has been successful.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, I agree with you, Bailey, on One Fabulous Boy. He's one of the only horses that's gone the distance, and he's one for one over Remington this year. So he looks to be the horse to beat.
SPEAKER_14Yes, we were able to get on the phone and talk with Ed Ross Hardy, trainer, about this favorite, the morning line favorite, going into this 550 event. All right, on the phone with trainer Ed Hardy. Ed, you got this horse, one fabulous boy going into the grade two SLM Big Daddy stakes. Horse obviously likes the distance. Uh I guess the last eight times you started this horse, it's been at a quarter of a mile of a mile or longer, seems to like this added distance. Uh, last time out won the 550 allowance stakes there at Remington Park. Talk about this horse's affinity for the distance.
SPEAKER_19He's uh he's kind of a natural distance horse. Um, he always has been that way. Uh it's difficult in a lot of places. I I've worked him around the turn, but we didn't really like like that distance for him. Um might have to try it anyway. Um he he's just I think he's just a natural 550 horse. Um he's run some good quarter miles too, but uh I don't know what it is. He just seems to he's got enough speed, but not too much to run short, it seems like. And uh but in the distance races, he's got enough speed that he get himself out in front and and carry it.
SPEAKER_14And you gotta like him in the spot here going in this 550, being the two to one morning line favorite.
SPEAKER_19I do. I um there's a couple horses that are uh that are kind of unknown in a way. I mean they're they're proven, but they you know hadn't run in the stakes level um besides the one D Keener's is the one that I'm worried the most about. Um and then there's uh the horse who are inside that ran a real impressive uh non-two going 400 yards his last out. Those two horses look pretty solid. My horse is doing good and he's healthy, sound, and and he's gonna he's gonna give us what he's got.
SPEAKER_14Well, good luck here in the SLM Big Daddy Stakes this weekend.
SPEAKER_19Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_21Another horse that I like that'll be a long shot play is 9-1-1. Um, it's his third start this year at Remington. He's improved every time. He also gets a rider change to Cody Smith. Cody's had a good meet this this year, so I think 9-1-1 has a chance to upset.
SPEAKER_20I agree with you, Yence. I really like that horse as well. He had a really good year last year as a three-year-old. He was a qualifier to the Texas Classic Derby and has just kind of hasn't been too consistent, but we'll see how he goes at 550 distance.
SPEAKER_14One thing I'd like to point out, and Ed Ed Hardy pointed out in his interview with us that you'll hear is that he's a little bit concerned about the D Keener horse, the eight-horse lightning strikes. Ran a huge race last time out, just barely got beat in the East Tech stakes. A question mark on the distance. Uh, really, this horse has never been over 400 yards. Actually, this horse started in the maiden claiming ranks, is if you can imagine that, and now he's running here at this$50,000 stakes event at at 4-1. So a horse to look at, and and there's plenty of question marks in this entire field of can they go the distance of the 550 yards.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, lightning strike definitely likes to win too. He's coming off of other than his last race, he's won five in a row, other than his last out. So he likes the winner circle.
SPEAKER_20And Greg was able to get on the phone with trainer D. Keener to talk about this gelding.
SPEAKER_14Alright, on the phone with trainer D. Keener D. You got a horse lightning strikes. Perfect record going into the last race, which was the grade two East Techs. Just barely missed that race with a neck loss, finishing in third by a neck to some big time horses going into that uh greatest stakes. And now you turn here in the grade two SLM Big Daddy stakes. I'm assuming you had two spots to think about, D here. You were either looking at the the D raper or you were looking at the uh SLM Big Daddy. Why why did you go the 550 route?
SPEAKER_10Well, I always thought this horse could run uh as far as you wanted wanted him to run, and he seems like he he likes going gonna like some distance. And uh I don't know, he's he's sound and uh last year actually we're running for 10,000. I mean, and all of a sudden this horse just kind of clicked and uh he reeled off like five wins in a row. Looked to be you know pretty good.
SPEAKER_14Yeah. Well, the the uh obviously a big field here, and good luck going into this grade two event. I appreciate it, Greg. Guys, another horse I want you to take a look at is the two horse relentless pursuit. You gotta throw out that last race in the East Tech Stakes. In the column on the shows the comment there, it shows the horse was leaning back at the start. So throw that race out and look at his past performances from there. This horse has just about won the mystery derby. Uh, has been very consistent, if you can say that, prior to that. This horse, if he can go the distance, which as mentioned, many of them in this race, that's the question mark. Can they go this 550-yard distance? And we shall see in the SLM Big Daddy stakes on Friday night at Remington Park.
SPEAKER_20And the first stakes on Saturday night at Rymington Park is the Bob Moore Memorial Stakes, a grade two event for$50,000, going 300 yards for three-year-olds and up.
SPEAKER_14The one that jumps out on the page for me is either looking at Cardiac Cowboy or Jonita Foos around, Yancey. These horses clearly are the standout runners in this race, in my opinion. Jonita Fus Around was victorious last time out. The Southwest Juvenile looked great to have been out there at Zia, but three starts prior to that ran a huge race in the Albuquerque Juvenile and also got up as a winner. I was able to get on the phone and talk with Tammy Johnson about this runner going into the three-year-old campaign. All right, on the phone with trainer Tammy Johnson. Tammy, this horse is on a three-race win streak coming into the Bob Moore here. Uh, two significant stakes events out of those three. Just looks great on paper. Talk about this three-year-old season going into this year.
SPEAKER_17Well, it's very exciting. We feel like we've got an excellent shot for his three-year-old year, and uh, you know, he's been pretty consistent finally. He started out, and we knew he had some talent. He was just uh sometimes it takes him a little while to get it together to be consistent enough. And uh he win the the stakes in Albuquerque, and then we came right back and win a day race at Hobbes at Zia. And he looked pretty tough going into that Southwest, and we needed that win to have enough money to get in it, you know. But uh he just fired just just like he had. I mean, just really has it on his mind and has turned into a pretty seems like to be a very consistent heart.
SPEAKER_14Well, good luck going into this weekend stakes event, Tammy.
SPEAKER_21Thank you. Yeah, I I can't agree with you more. I think Jonita Fusaround's really been on his game this year. He's won three in a row. Like you said, he just won the Southwest Juvenile at Zia. It'll all depend on if he can adapt to the Remington Park track, but the horse travels a lot, so it shouldn't be a problem. Other than that, he's gotta beat the two inside horses. Already at Cowboy and Sunrise Tempt Temptation. Uh the hottest duo on the grounds this year is Leonardo Alcalic and Juan Polito, so I never can count them out.
SPEAKER_20I agree, Yancy. I really liked the one horse surprise temptation. He had just ran in the$2 million fraturity last year at Los Alamitos, and he didn't run too hot, but other than that, he hasn't been off of the board.
SPEAKER_14I like the horse as well, a$100,000 Heritage Place graduate. If you look there in the uh last race, if you see who won the race and beat this horse by a nose at Dudar Cartel, that's the horse that's been tearing it up there at Los Alamitas in the three-year-old category. So this horse certainly could step up there. It like you both have mentioned, it's a grade one contender and uh it qualified into the two million, so this horse belongs for sure.
SPEAKER_20Another horse that I really liked in this race is Cardiac Cowboy. He just came off a big win at Rymington Park in the Mighty Deck three stakes.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, Cardiac Cowboy is super tough. Um Armando Avise is he's not Jason's main rider, but it seems like anytime he's on a mount, he's super tough to beat. Jason gives him some really good horses, and he's just seems like he's getting better and better as he ages.
SPEAKER_14And a lot of these horses that he faced the last time out in the Mighty Deck 3, which is a grade to event, starts out the Remington Park meet every year historically. This Cardiac Cowboy is a real runner. This horse can break from the gate with just about anybody. And I was able to get on the phone with former world champion trainer Jason Olmsted to talk about this talented runner going into the stakes event. All right, on the phone with former AQHA world champion trainer Jason Olmsted. Jason, Mighty Deck 3 winner, Cardiac Cowboys going into the Bob Memorial, probably in a really good spot here. Talk about this horse stretching out this time to go 300 yards after his 250-yard stakes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he came back good out of the out of the Mighty Deck 3. I mean, he's always been a super gate horse his whole entire life. We always thought he could go a little further down the track, but here lately it looks like shorter the better for him. So we bypassed there was an Oklahoma bread steak here about a week ago that we bypassed it to stay fresh for this one. So we're looking for a repeat performance from the Mighty Deck.
SPEAKER_04And we'll be right back after these words. For over 21 years, Roboshow Ranch Inc. has provided the racehorse industry with first-rate services you can trust, from breeding and stallion to sales prep and complete mare care. Be sure to check out their outstanding stallion roster at RoboshowRanch Inc.com.
SPEAKER_14The son of walkthrough fire Jess Fire Me is standing at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma, the runner-up finisher in the Riados Facurity and a finalist in the Los Al Super Derby and an earner of over$240,000 on the racetrack as a runner, who is also from the same family of leading damn Jess Sass Me, and whose foals hit the racetrack in 2026. That's Jess Fire Me, standing at Lazy E Ranch.
SPEAKER_04Also standing is the LaSalle Super Derby winner, Big Blue, the legendary sire Corona Cartel, the Grade 1 producing sire, Coronado Cartel. Grade 1 winner, Cyber Monday. The all-time leading sire, first down dash. The grade 1 winning champion, Kemton, the multiple Grade 1 and Champion Producing Sire, Kiss My Hawks. A sire with nearly$44 million in earnings. PYC Paint Your Wagon. Sire of three champions and five millionaires, Valiant Hero. And introducing for 2026 the Grade One winning Unrelentless. All standing at Lazy E Ranch in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The racing preview segment is brought to you by the two-time AQHA champion standing at the Louisiana Center for Equine Reproduction, Eagles Fly Higher. Check out his stallion page on stallionesearch.com. All right, back to the show.
SPEAKER_20And the next stakes race that we're going to talk about at Remington Park is the Lyco Bird Stakes, a$75,000 event going 330 yards for accredited Oklahoma bred two-year-olds.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, the horse to beat in this race for sure is Whiskey Doc. He's already qualified for a futurity and ran fourth in that race. So he should be super tough in this spot. Uh horse I like is the horse on the outside, Mr. Sinatra. I really liked his trial race. He had a long duel. I think he'll be tough on the outside with Francisco in the Irons.
SPEAKER_14Well, clearly, Whiskey Doc is the only horse that has qualified into a futurity in this field. But you know, if you go by these Equibase numbers that they throw out there, uh two of them that jump off the page that are are really high is the horse on the inside of Whiskey Doc, and that's Isa Chick Magnet, which of course is two for two in undefeated, and then also I like the horse towards the outside, Gypsy Rose out of the barn of Jed Vane, another horse that's undefeated and has very impressive Equibase numbers as well. But we were able to get Jockey Cody Smith on the phone, who's been the regular rider on Whiskey Dock going into this big race here in the Lyco Bird. Alright, on the phone with Jockey Cody Smith. Cody's riding Whiskey Dock going into the Lyco Bird. Cody, this horse, two outs thus far, qualified into the Oklahoma Faturity, missed the winner circle by a length and a quarter there at the wire. Uh, this horse certainly has got the experience as opposed to the rest of the field. I believe he's the only one that qualified into any fraternity thus far in his early career. Talk to us about this two-year-old going into this race.
SPEAKER_09He uh he's a really professional little horse. He uh shows up and he tries to do his job every time. We uh the finals in the Oklahoma got away just a little party and got bumped pretty hard. But he gutted up and showed he had a lot of heart that day just to get up and run the way he did back in the finals. He's running good right now coming into this, so pretty good performance, hopefully.
SPEAKER_14Let's get into the easy date today because a great two event. Phillies and mares, three-year-old numbered going 350 yards for$75,000.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, the horse I like in here is a poly revenge. She's four for four, she's never been beat. She won the heritage place last year. And she does get a rider change, though. I really like her.
SPEAKER_14Yes, and I like her as well. Heritage Place Futurity winner from last year. Million dollar event, and we were able to get on the phone with trainer Jed Vane and talk to him about this talented Philly going into the finals here. On the phone with trainer Jed Vane. Jed got the Heritage Place Futurity winner from last year in this spot in the easy day. Talk about a poly revenge going into the spot.
SPEAKER_08She's doing really good. This is her first start off of a layoff. And it sets her up perfect for the heritage place, oh three weeks before the heritage trials. So that's that's the goal here is to get a race in her before the trials for the heritage place.
SPEAKER_14And as mentioned, she's been training very well.
SPEAKER_08She's been training very well. She looks amazing.
SPEAKER_14Well, Jed, good luck in this spot this coming weekend, and uh hope to see you in the winter circle. Thank you, Greg. Appreciate it.
SPEAKER_20Another horse that I think is a big factor in this race is Carmelites. She has won the grade one All-American Oaks as well as the Texas Classic Oaks last year, and she's gonna have a trainer change to James Gonzalez III, but that shouldn't change her routine up too much, and I think she will be a horse to watch.
SPEAKER_14Yes, a$12,000 Heritage Place yearling graduate. You know, you have to think about these last two races that this horse threw. They're at the championship at Sunlin, grade one event, kind of threw a clunker. I mean, didn't feel finished way behind, but did not run to what I would call the the best of her ability, and then also comes back in the trials for the West Texas maturity and throws another not so great race. So coming off of two fairly poor efforts back to back, I feel she's gonna have to really be on her aim game going into this race with this field.
SPEAKER_21Uh anytime she gets to face just Phillies and Mares, she seems to be a lot tougher. And James Gonzalez and Kristen Cardanas are winning at a 40% rate at Remington Park meet this meeting.
SPEAKER_20Another horse in this race that I really like is I am Candy, who has been very tough in California for the past year. And she's coming back to Remington Park with trainer Eddie Willis and rider Justine Klaber. She's The last four outs have been stakes races, and she just came off a big win in the Denim and Diamond stakes grade three stakes race.
SPEAKER_14Really didn't run a bit bad race in the Charger Bar either. Uh three-quarters of a length back from the winner. Uh this horse definitely could come up there and jump up and certainly beat this field in any given moment. Yancey, I think if you could run this race five times, you're gonna have five different winners.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, another horse that you can't ever leave out either is J.S. Freight Train. All the horses did is run in stakes race, and he's fourth, first, second, first, so I couldn't agree with you. It's a really tough field, and anybody can win.
SPEAKER_14You know, all these big stakes horses that we're mentioning in this race, it's hard not to go to the Olmstead horse there, the winner of the Deccetta the last time out, the grade two event, and that's Flying Bandita, ran a huge Equibase number there in this 350-yard event, and gets the riding assignment of Romero Garcia back going into the finals here. That's another horse that you got to so a very well-rounded race of a bunch of superstars. And like I said, run this race multiple times, you're gonna have multiple winners.
SPEAKER_05And we'll be right back after these words.
SPEAKER_14New for the 2026 breeding season at Royal Vista Ranch in Wayne, Oklahoma is the multiple grade one derby winning just Dulce. He's the winner of the Grade 1 Texas Classic Derby, and also claimed victory in the Grade 2 Dash Recash Derby at Lone Star Park. As for Pedigree, he is the full brother to leading sire Dulce Sentancia, and without a doubt, he's destined for greatness in the sire ranks at Royal Vista.
SPEAKER_04Also standing for 2026 is the Los Al 2 million finalist, a political J Streak, the second all-time leading money earner, a political Jess, the Grade 1 producing, FDD going grand, a perennial leading sire, Flying Cowboy 123, and an all-American finalist, gonna be famous. Multiple stakes producing sire, heart of the cartel. All this talent standing at Royal Vista Ranch in Wayne, Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_22Mark your calendar. AQHA Challenge Season is here. Trials kick off April 24th at Sam Houston Race Park, with the final set for May 17th. Don't miss your chance to see top quarter horses compete on one of racing's biggest stages. For more information, visit AQHA Racing.comslash Racing.
SPEAKER_06Alright, back to the show.
SPEAKER_14Alright, we're back here, ready to preview some more graded stakes races out there at Remington Park. If you're a true lover of quarter horse racing, you're absolutely loving this show. I know it, because from some of you that we've heard out there, this is the kind of content you've been asking for. So, Bailey, let's talk about the next stakes race.
SPEAKER_20And moving on to the next stakes race at Remington Park is the Mr. Master Bug Stakes, a$75,000 event for accredited Oklahoma-bred three-year-olds. And a horse I got to watch run as a two-year-old at Redoso Downs was Cowboy One. I got to see him in his first out when he qualified for the Redoso Juvenile, and he came back and dead heated with It's Good Valentine, which Fred Danley trained that horse, and it was a great horse. And this horse has always impressed me, so I'm excited to see him come back as a three-year-old.
SPEAKER_21He looked pretty good in his first time out. He ran fourth, so he looks to improve off of his second start at Remington. The horse I like is just who it's inside the six. Ibar Fabius Eagle. He's been super tough in stakes races all year. He won the Southwest Juvenile, or I mean took third in the Southwest Juvenile this year. He was gate to wire in his Remington Park debut. And I think he'll be really tough. Also, you gotta talk about the Olmstead runners. It seems like Olmstead's loaded in every race.
SPEAKER_14Yes, Uncle Redheads, a horse that's run huge last time out, didn't qualify to get into the uh Remington Derby, but Olmsted wheels his horse back in here and gives this horse a shot in the master bug. And we were able to talk with Jason about this talented three-year-old going into that stakes event. All right, on the phone with former world champion trainer Jason Olmsted. Jason, Uncle Redhead's going in the Master Bug Stakes. Horse won its last race, uh, knows how to find the winner circle there in graded stakes company, winner of the Valley Junction Futurity out there at Prairie Meadows. Talk about this horse going into the master bug.
SPEAKER_01Uh, I mean, really, he ran a very nice race in his Remington Park Derby trial out of the one hole, just didn't qualify. So he came back in great shape. We thought this was a good spot to give him another out, and then he'll run in the heritage derby trials after this.
SPEAKER_20And another stakes race at Remington Park is the D Raper Sooner State Stakes, a hundred thousand dollar restricted grade one event for three-year-olds and up.
SPEAKER_14The obvious choice to talk about in this spot, guys, is impressive. The former world champion, multiple winner of the champion of champions, um, kind of been on a didn't have the greatest of 2025s in in his book or history of impressive, but uh certainly is a horse, a hard-knocking horse, there in the Go Man Go, just barely got beat by a nose. In the Robert Boniface, got barely beat by a head. In the Z Wayne Griffith trials, barely got beat by a head, and only, you know, three-quarters of a length back of FDD Dreams there in the Champion of Champions. You know, I'd can you argue that this horse has lost a step? Possibly. I mean, this horse is an eight-year-old, and you know, they don't always stay fresh forever. Two and a half million dollars earned on the racetrack, 40 lifetime starts, 25 winner circle pictures taken of this horse. That's an an that's an amazing number, guys.
SPEAKER_20Yes, I agree, Greg, but I really liked your interview with Steve Holt, how he described whenever this horse got a little bit of time off, he usually comes back pretty strong.
SPEAKER_14All right, on the phone with owner Steve Holt. Steve, you told me earlier in this year Impressum was looking to have a campaign here at Remington Park, and here we are in the D-Raper Stakes, geared up there to go down the racetrack 400 yards, graded stakes events a bit against a bunch of Oklahoma Breads. Talk about the big horse, how he's been doing.
SPEAKER_07You know, as as we talked earlier in the year, we brought him in and took him to Dr. Hayes at Elgin. And with the intent of we may run him, we may not, but only if Tommy Gibb is 100% blessing. I mean, he checked out 100%. We swam him some on the layoff just to kind of keep some fitness. He worked a couple times at Delphine, you know, and he looked really strong. Rodrigo's been on him and you know, said he felt really, really good. So we the horse didn't notice anything. We just I'd like to run him here at home before he gets retirement. You know, his last race here was in uh 2021. He won the running from Hart Derby, and you know, the rest is history. But I really feel like, you know, he he runs good off of layoff and uh and he's a sound design or he wouldn't be running, you know.
SPEAKER_14In a great field you're catching here in the D rape, or it's a tough field, uh, it's probably the deepest, one of the deeper fields I've seen in a long time in this race.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, you know, when you get to that level, you there's no there's no easy races. You know, a lot of good horses in there, like you said. Uh of course the horse plants come out and not even looked at him up or even figured out him out, but he win the feminine championship against the horse that won the champion of champions. And you know, that's really not that's not even going into the others, but that's all you need to say about him, you know. So yeah, we we didn't come up here to find an easy spot. Um you know, he's uh hopefully he's kind of back to his uh 24 year. But you know, the horse is eight, and we're really we're you know, we're realist. He's not as young as he was, but you know, he's still got a lot of talent, and the one thing I know about him, he'll run all he can.
SPEAKER_14Well, good luck here in this spot, Steve, and uh we'll see you after, uh, maybe hopefully in the winter circle.
SPEAKER_07All right, thank you, Greg, for calling.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, the horse he's gotta beat, though, is Toastin' Heroes on the outside. This horse has just really came into his own this year. He had a huge win in the Sunlin Park Championship his last time out. And Jacob Enriquez comes into riding for Clint Crawford. I think he'll be really tough on the outside.
SPEAKER_20I agree with you, Yancey. Just beating the 2025 world champion FDD Dreams, he's has to be tough.
SPEAKER_14And I was able to get on the phone with All-American Futurity winning trainer Clint Crawford to talk to him about this grade one winner. All right, on the phone with trainer Clint Crawford. Clint's got Toast and Heroes, a grade one winner last timeout. Clint, this in a four-race stretch, this horse has had quite the four races, only really kind of stubbing his toe there at Hobbs American Derby, but comes back real strong there at Sunland in the championship in the grade one event and puts a W up there against the world champion there. Talk about that grade one race as well as how this horse is doing going into this restricted grade one race.
SPEAKER_13You know, he's been training exceptionally well. He he uh, you know, and he he had those problems back early. I might have told you a little bit about it. He'd cracked a quarter, you know, last year at the beginning of his three-year-old year, and so we fought that all year long with him, and and uh but now we've got him in pretty good shape and he's doing good and and uh and so and he ran good for us in the La Fiesta uh Derby and then and then he did stumble away. Uh but when we had him over there in the Hobbs American one when we uh ran him in the championship, he was just on his game. I mean you know, I I didn't know if I could win that race because of the competition that was in there, but I really felt like that we were gonna be up there close and you know he got out of the gates that day and you know he was right there with the leaders and you know he's got a little kid counter on the end and and uh so it was just a very exciting race uh to watch him watching outrun those good horses like that.
SPEAKER_14In pretty deep water here though, then for sure. I mean you're the grade one winner coming into this race, but plenty of horses to talk about in this race. Talk about this spot.
SPEAKER_13Well, I like where he's at, you know. I thought I thought he had a pretty good post. You know, uh yes, it's an extremely tough race, you know, and it's gonna be like that for him from here on out. Uh, you know, because we've got uh several different spots that we're going and we're gonna be facing these kind of horses. But uh I think he's in a good spot, you know. We just need him to we're at a different racetrack. We're at Remington, you know, so things are different here. So you know, we kind of gotta get him out of the gate. It's that's kind of been the story before. Uh now he has won here before at this track, and you know, and he's done well here, but uh you know, we're getting deep in the comp the competition is about as strong as anywhere. Good luck this weekend in the Sooner Stakes and and uh hope for the best. All right. Well, we appreciate it, Greg. Thanks for giving me a call.
SPEAKER_20Another horse that you can't count out in this race that is always one to uh look out for is hooked and gone. He was the champion aged horse in 2025, and he just got a second place in the Mr. Jet Moore stakes to Hard to Politics. So I think he will definitely be on the radar.
SPEAKER_14You know, it's a tough race from top to bottom, and another horse to look at, guys, is Jay's on fire out of the Justin Joyner barn. Another horse just barely missing, and on the say the last five starts, he's won two out of the last five, both of those being stakes events, but in 2025, but his last two starts barely getting beat there by some really nice horses, including Stetson in the most recent Remington Park Challenge Championship, a grade two event, beat a lot of really nice horses in that race, went out to two starts back there in Albuquerque, also another one. We I thought possibly uh if Scoop's Dynasty was not in that race there in Albuquerque, Jay's on fire would have easily been the clear winner and uh certainly would have gone on to the grade one event there in Albuquerque and you know might have had a different narrative going into this race. Jay's on fire is certainly a horse to look at.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, Greg top to bottom. This this is a grade one race, and that's what it should be. I'll throw a long shot out. Uh BAJ, the number eight horse. He had a really good allowance race last time out, and the owners paid$255,000 for this horse in the heritage sale, so they paid a lot of money for him, and he seems to be improving right now. Uh, this will definitely be his toughest field that he has to face, but he could be a long shot play for third or fourth in this race.
SPEAKER_14Another fabulous, greatest stakes event there on Saturday night. Here is D Raper Stakes, and we'll be right back after these words to talk about more stakes races coming this weekend in Oklahoma City.
SPEAKER_16When winners break from the gate, they often come from the Rio Doso Sale Company. Bridger, winner of the New Mexican Spring Futurity, and Hendry, winner of the West Texas Juvenile, both graduates of the 2025 sale. Find your next champion at the Rio Doso Sale Company.
SPEAKER_14Hey, did you know that New Mexico's number one leading sophomore sire for money earned in 2025 is Uncle D, the$2.6 million sire, who has the top qualifier going into the Grade 1 Oklahoma Paint and Appaloosa Futurity and DW showing D Off? And he's also sired several great at stakes runners, including Heaven's Uncle, winner of the Grade 1 Remington Park Oklahoma Bread Futurity, as well as Grade 3 Valley Junction Futurity winner Uncle Redheads. And did you also know that Uncle D is standing at Prestige Equine in Roswell, New Mexico for 2026? And that he's royally bred out of the first down dash mare Little Surfer and by leading legendary sire Corona Cartel? Go take a look at PrestigeEquine.net or KavanaughQarterhorses.com as Uncle D is standing at PrestigeEquine in 2026 in Roswell, New Mexico.
SPEAKER_06Alright, back to the show.
SPEAKER_14Alright, we're back here, another segment. Bayley, we've never gone this far into a preview.
SPEAKER_20We haven't. I think what is this? Total of nine graded stakes races this weekend.
SPEAKER_14Yeah, you're gonna be a busy girl with that camera of yours. Speaking about busy girls, we're going to go right into the Remington Park Oaks. Ten horses lining up, three year old Phillies, 400 yards,$182,000 purse. Tell us who you like, Yancey.
SPEAKER_21I like the 10 on the outside Amarilles. She won the black gold fraturity last year as a two-year-old to end the year. Her first start this year wasn't that great, but she looked good in the trials. She ran second to Beltane. I think she'll be super tough on the outside.
SPEAKER_20I agree with you. Running second to Beltane, who was the fastest qualifier, and hasn't didn't really have a fantastic two-year-old year, but maybe it just took her a little bit longer to mature.
SPEAKER_14You know, if you go back and listen to the interview that D Keener did with us uh last week in Bailey and Yancey, he was actually surprised at how well Beltane ran as well. And there's always gotta be something to be said about a horse peaking at the right time, and maybe this spot right here is exactly where she's peaking.
SPEAKER_20I agree with you, Greg. Another horse that I liked is the four, Flawless Grace. She's three for six and has only been off of the board twice. She ran second last year in the Sam Houston Faturity, trained by Leo Alcala, and I think she'll be very tough.
SPEAKER_21Yes, flawless Grace will be hard to beat, Bailey. Right to her inside, Emerald Bay, another D Tina runner, looks to be really tough as well. Run third in the Oklahoma Derby, and then comes right back and wins her trial. So she will be super tough.
SPEAKER_14I like that horse as well, Biancy. Emerald Bay. You know, theoretically, if this was a stakes race and we didn't have the trial race from from last time out on either one of these horses, I would have told you Emerald Bay was probably my choice if we put it up against the fastest qualifier, Beltanes, coming out of the same barn as D. Keener. So I really like this Emerald Bay. If this fastest qualifier doesn't run back to what she did in the trials, I certainly think that another Keener horse should be right there towards the end of the wire. And that leads us over to the three-year-olds going in the Remington Park Derby.$217,000 grade one event for three-year-olds going 400 yards there at Oklahoma City.
SPEAKER_20I think that the horse to beat in this race is JC Speeding. A three-year-old Gelding who qualified for the All-American Juvenile last year and ran second with very tough competition and came back and qualified for the Texas Classic Oaks and ran third. So he has been I mean, he hasn't missed the board yet.
SPEAKER_21Yeah, I agree with you, Bailey. JC Speeding's the horse to beat for sure. Like you said, he's never been off the board. Um, I think he'll be super tough. Uh the horse I like to maybe beat him is the four. Jamie Sentacha. This horse really has only worn one bad race, and that was the Evangeline Down Fraturity. But if you go back to his two-year-old career, he won the Oklahoma Fraturity at Remington, and he seems to run his best races at Remington Park.
SPEAKER_14Bunch of nice horses in this field. Do you guys notice how many Heritage Place graduates are littering the top ten qualifiers going into this final of this derby here? And it is a restricted grade one event. I said it was a grade one event at the beginning, but it is a restricted grade one event for Oklahoma Brads. Definitely JC Speeding is the one to beat here in the Derby.
SPEAKER_20Another tough competitor in this field is Cyber Command 3. He's four for six and just barely missed the board running a fourth last year at Evangeline Downs. Not knowing the rider yet, but if Juan Polito and Alcala team up again, they'll be really tough in this race.
SPEAKER_14Yes, we were able to talk with Jockey Juan Polito, who told me that he was taking both of these horses out onto the track on Wednesday morning and will be making his decision and contacting us here at Quarter Horse Racing Talk. Maybe we'll be able to get it on before we go to print with this here podcast. Maybe not. But I'll go ahead and be his jockey agent, Bailey, and Yancy. I'll go ahead and tell him that if everything's equal, he needs to get on Cyber Command 3. And maybe he'll pay me the 25% when he crosses the wire in front.
SPEAKER_20And the final stakes race of the night is the Rumington Park Faturity, the restricted grade one event for$971,000, going 330 yards.
SPEAKER_14And you got the two favorites on the outside. A political gold digger from the first night of qualifying. And what'd you think of me now? John Steinboat trained Cyber Monday Colt that was the fastest qualifier for day two. Both of them are on the outside, right next to each other, gonna be eyeballing each other. Well, if everything goes well at the break, they'll be eyeballing each other down the lane.
SPEAKER_21I really liked how What Do You Think of Me Now ran in the trials. And like you said, Greg, those will be the two favorites. The horse that I think can beat him is the five-horse Cyber Hostage. He's the most experienced runner in the race. Um he's won his last two outs. Um and Cyber Monday's been a super hot sire right now, so Cyber Hostage might be a tough horse to beat.
SPEAKER_20Yes, and Cyber Hostage was a$29,000 Heritage Place sale graduate.
SPEAKER_14Yes. Another race littered with Heritage Place graduates, a political gold digger, one of the fastest qualifiers from the qualifying nights, an$86,000 sales graduate out of Heritage Place.
SPEAKER_20Yes, six out of the ten runners for Heritage Place Cell graduates.
SPEAKER_14Yes, a great night of stakes races out in Oklahoma City. And guys, I'm worn out from all this. So here we're gonna close this preview section out here on Quota Horse Racing Talk, and we'll be right back after these words from our sponsor.

SPEAKER_14All right, headed into a different direction, talking with Racing Secretary Mike Acton about the upcoming 2026 Quarter Horse Race Meet at Sam Houston Race Park, set to open on April 16th. And run all the way to June 13th. And as mentioned in the opening, not only is the weather hot during this period of time during the meet, but so is the racing. All right, on the phone here with Mike Acton, racing secretary down there at Sam Houston. Thanks for joining us here on Quarterhorse Racing Talk.
SPEAKER_11Glad to be here, Greg.
SPEAKER_14Mike, one of the things I like about the Sam Houston, I guess, stakes calendar or this the quarter horse meet. And for those that don't know, I've worked for Mike for probably five or more years as your stakes coordinator at not only at the Sam Houston Thoroughbred and the Quarter Horse Meet, but also at Ritama. And this is that part where, Mike, you butt in and say, Greg's probably the greatest stakes coordinator I've ever run across. Absolutely. And you forgot you left out Lone Star as well. Oh, I forgot Lone Star as well. Yes. But Mike, the one thing I like about the Quarterhorse meet at Sam Houston, it's just chock full of things from the very beginning of the meet as well as to the end. You got open bread races, you got Texas bread races, you got futurities, you got derbies, you got futurities for the paints, you got Corgi racing, you got lawnmower racing, you got the and of course the triple crown on the thoroughbred side runs right on top of this the uh quarter horse meat. So it's just so much to do, and just such an adventurous meet that you guys have down there at Sam Houston. So talk about not only that, just a huge stakes calendar in front of you, but also how well received this new futurity you guys have, the Texas Breeders Futurity, is kind of kicking off the meat.
SPEAKER_11We we are really excited about this meet we have coming up. You know, we we've got the the introduction of the new Texas Breeders Fraturities right here at the beginning of our meet. So we're starting out with a half million dollar fraturity, and then it rolls right into you know, we run trials this weekend for that, and then next weekend we run AQHA challenge trials, and which all the finals will be on May the 9th, along with our grade two Sam Houston Classic and our Leon Bard Memorial Stakes, along with our John Buchanan Memorial Stakes. So it is really gonna be you know setting up to be our first action-packed weekend uh finals, and uh, and then we do the same thing around the end of the meet. You know, we have uh we have our Sam Houston Fraturity and our Sam Houston Derby and our Oaks, uh, along with our grade two Governor's Cup Marathon and our our Sam Houston 550 stakes, which is a grade three, um, along with our our Miss Sam Houston stakes, our our grade three Jesse Yoko Memorial, our grade two Willie Hickman, and our Sam Houston 250 on our last day. So we're definitely looking forward to an action-packed meet.
SPEAKER_14Don't forget the Corgi races, Mike.
SPEAKER_11Oh yeah, we can't forget about the Corgies. Good. Yes.
SPEAKER_14And I've uh got the lawnmower uh up and fired up in the backyard, and and I've got a mechanic coming over to see if he can put some Willie bars on it, because that was the that was the hold up last year. I didn't why I didn't compete in it.
SPEAKER_11But uh the NOS, you're gonna get some nitrous.
SPEAKER_14Nitrous is coming as well. But Mike, thanks for getting on and talking about this upcoming meet, and of course, we'll be down there covering a lot of these graded stakes events on Stalinesearch. And Mike, good luck in this meet.
SPEAKER_11Thank you, sir. I appreciate you, Greg.
SPEAKER_14All right, Bailey, that's all the time we have this week here on Quarter Horse Racing Talk Weekly. And got a big, busy weekend this weekend. I'm going to be in Louisiana, and you're gonna be in Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_20Yes, Greg. There's a long list of Grated Stakes races in Oklahoma City on Saturday night, and I'm glad to be covering them for StalineeSearch.com.
SPEAKER_14And Bailey, I hope you have great weather out there. Of course, Oklahoma, you just never know what you're gonna get sometimes out there, but we'll be back next week to bring you all the graded stakes action that took place this past weekend and discuss that, as well as have you a new featured guest here on Quarter Horse Racing Talk Weekly.
