Well, hello. This is Kimberly Brock, and for over 20 years I've been running my own businesses that have not only been profitable but personally fulfilling to me. So now I'm on a mission to help other new business owners, just like you, make money doing what you love to. Now we're going to have some fun, so let's get started.
Speaker 2:Now we're going to have some fun, so let's get started. Well, hello, this is Kimberly, it's episode 300.
Speaker 3:Oh, my goodness, and I am so glad that you are here today. This is a fun episode because we're talking about something that I think a lot of people think is fluffy and unnecessary. We're talking about whether you actually need self-care and that word self-care even I think it's kind of cringy. Like we need self-care and you've seen all the memes and all the girls like drinking green juice and like having a spa day and those are great things. But I want to be realistic. Like, do we need self-care? And if we do, what actually does that look like? Without being this like fluffy, egotistical, vain treatment of ourselves versus what actually is going to help us show up in our business effectively? We're going to talk about this today. I think it's very important and, again, if you don't like the word self-care, I'm with you. It's a little bit cringey to me at times, but I have to say, if you cannot show up in your business effectively, like you cannot pour from an empty cup, you know how much is being poured out of you every day in your business. And so in this episode we're going to dive into what it really means to take care of yourself and why it's not selfish, it's actually smart. If you're new here, welcome. I'm so glad that you found this podcast. I have no doubt it's going to help you along your business journey, whether you're in the idea stage, starting or growing.
Speaker 3:Whether you're starting a podcast for your business, whatever it is, I'm so happy you're here. This is for you. This is to give you the confidence and the business skills that you need to build your business dream. Now, if you're new, you need to get plugged in right now. I have free resources for you. Okay, just like this podcast is free, I've got some printables and things that you can start using right now, so you can either go to KimberlyBrockcom or you can scroll down in the show notes. Okay, you will see a link to the free resources for you. If you're in the idea stage, I've got a printable guide for you to help you kind of figure out what idea might be good for you. If you're in the starting stage, I have a 16-step checklist for starting your business that you put on your desk. It's super handy. I'm sharing with you exactly what you need to be working on, right. If you're trying to grow your business, I have something for you. If you're starting your podcast, so make sure you check it all out. You want to get your freebies? Don't leave without your little bag of goodies, okay, so make sure you get those and get plugged in.
Speaker 3:I do have a Facebook group as well, called Women Starting Businesses and Podcasts Doing what we Love. So if you want to join that, I'm in there periodically and would love to respond to what you are doing. I love seeing what you comment about, what you ask about, and I love to help. So make sure you check that out as well. And if you've been listening a while, thank you so much to all my loyal listeners. Y'all are wonderful and amazing.
Speaker 3:And today, because it's the 300th episode, I thought I would read a review. So here is a review from HD's Legacy. It says it's titled how this Pilates Structure Took the Leap and Opened Her Own Studio. Okay, she meant instructor. Okay, how this Pilates Instructor Took the Leap and Opened Her Own Studio. It says I love, love, love.
Speaker 3:Kimberly's podcast. This is the first podcast on which I've heard her do an interview and I particularly enjoyed it to hear success stories of someone doing what Kimberly has talked about many times, and hearing how she took it step by step and succeeded was so inspirational to hear. I hope Kimberly does many more such interviews from her success stories. That is so sweet. Thank you so much. Yes, I loved the episode about the Pilates instructor. It was a great one because it really shared how you can even start a physical business, like a physical store location, and I just think it's so good to hear what you can accomplish.
Speaker 3:Many of my clients are online business owners, like coaches, service providers. Some are product sellers, but some are store owners as well, but some are store owners as well. I've never had a store, but all of these tips can be used for you. If you're starting a mobile business, a store, you're having some kind of mobile booth. This is all for you, again, to give you the confidence and skills that you need to build your business dreams.
Speaker 3:So thank you so much from HD's Legacy. I really, really appreciate it and if you've been listening a while and you find value in this podcast, would you be so kind to write a quick review? Okay, it takes 30 seconds. Like, if you're an Apple podcast you can hit five stars. Like that takes you a half a second, but if you could write out maybe an episode that you liked or something that really inspires you from this podcast, I would love it. It would mean the world to me and I can't help but think that it helps Apple and the other players see that this is a valuable podcast and show it to others like you. So that's it, okay, on to the episode.
Speaker 2:Well, hello everyone. How are you? How?
Speaker 3:is your business going? I am so excited for you. I love getting the updates from clients, from my group members, from people in the Facebook group, from messages. It just makes me so happy that you are gaining the confidence to actually build your dream. I think it's just so wonderful. And there's so many people out there that never do this, that won't ever pursue something greater for their life. And you're different because you're gaining the courage to do this. And it's scary, but you're doing it anyway. So I'm so excited for you. Today's episode is gonna be fun Again, celebrating 300 episodes. I can't believe it. My oldest daughter, lexi, was asking me the other day wait, you've been doing 300 episodes. And I'm like, yes, every won't even realize the time that is gone, like it's fascinating, it's bewildering, it's amazing to to have these accomplishments right, and I don't want you to give up on yourself ever, like, just go for it, just start, just get this thing going. But today's topic again is super fun.
Speaker 3:Let's be honest. When you're running a business, especially if you're doing most of it on your own, it's easy to put yourself at the bottom of the list. There's always something to do, someone to help. You're trying to hit certain goals. But here's the truth you are your business's biggest asset. You're the most valuable asset to your business and if you're exhausted, if you're burnt out, if you're running around like a chicken with your head cut off, if you're running on empty, if you're stressed, if you're a basket case, if you're an emotional wreck, if you're all the things, your business is going to suffer. It's the fact. It's the fact of the day that you, your business, will suffer. If you are suffering in a way that you may not even consider suffering, you may not consider all the stresses that you have in your business as suffering, it is because you're not your best self and you're running yourself ragged, right. But here's the deal Some of you, you're working on your business.
Speaker 3:You're doing all these things. You may think that taking time for yourself is like a luxury or like it's lazy, but if you're always operating from depletion right, low on energy, stressed out, grumpy, not knowing what to do, you will start to resent this very thing that you were excited to build. You will actually start to resent your business. You will not have fun. Actually start to resent your business, you will not have fun. You will go to record your podcast or create your product listings on your website, or start working on some kind of printables, or start working on your stuff, and you will actually resent it and you won't want to do it. Okay, I don't want this happening to you.
Speaker 3:Okay, if your energy, your creativity or your clarity about what the heck you should be doing is running on empty, no strategy or planner can fix you. You are going to need to fill your tank. You're going to need to fill your tank. It's a hard pill to swallow for some of you who are go, go, go, right, and I like to say, like my program, grow Getters, like that, you're a go-getter, right, we're all go-getters, we, we actually are. You wouldn't be here if you're not. But what can happen is you can go, go, go and you can deplete all of the fuel in your tank, right? So so let's clear this up.
Speaker 3:First of all, self-care isn't small days and green juices. Okay, that is a great thing. Maybe you do need that, but that's not actually what I'm talking about, okay, it's really about creating rhythms in your business that protect yourself from that suffering, okay, that fuel your body and mind and keep you in a creative zone so you can be the best business owner that you can possibly be. It's also not about doing less necessarily, which we will get into, but it's about doing the things that actually support your brain and your emotional health, your physical health, your mental health, so that you can keep going without burning out and without completely blowing up this business that you were so excited to build. Okay, so today you can see that this is important, right? You can hear me loud and clear.
Speaker 3:I am one of those people who is I don't know if I'm super good at self-care, and even the word self-care it's just kind of cringey. It's become overused. It can have a negative connotation. Like I'm just picturing a girl with like all her makeup taken off and she's got like a headband going across her forehead, you know, so she can put on like a face mask. Like when I think of self-care, literally that's the image that comes up in my head. Like does an image come up in your head? Like I'm picturing a girl in a robe, her hair up on top of her head and like a messy bun and like a headband over her face and she's like cleaning with no makeup on, cleaning her face and she's like putting a green mud on her face. Like that's what I picture Again. There's nothing wrong with that. Let's take care of our skin. I think we should.
Speaker 3:But today I'm talking about you as a business owner, what you need to be doing to take care of yourself. Okay, these are things that I have lived by that help me every day most of these and I think that they will massively help you Y'all. You literally cannot burn the candle at both ends. If you're one of those people right now, I want you to pay attention to this episode and realize that you are going to have to take charge of yourself and put boundaries on yourself.
Speaker 3:I always say, kind of, come out of yourself and imagine you're talking to a really good friend who is doing what you are doing. Okay, so like, act like you're. Come out of yourself and imagine you're talking to a really good friend who is doing what you are doing. Okay, so like, act like you're coming out of yourself and you're looking at you and you're like girlfriend. You are wigged out, like, are you even taking care of yourself? Like what is happening right now? Like, imagine talking to you as another person looking at you. It's scary, it literally is scary when you look at it and it's just an aha moment because you realize, like I already know what I need to be doing, but today we're gonna be talking about it.
Speaker 3:Okay, let's talk about these things. I'm giving you 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 things. Okay, I just wrote these down. These are very important 5 things that you can do to take care of yourself, okay, as a business owner, so that your business doesn't blow up and implode. Okay, number one I believe I do this almost every day is I exercise. Y'all need to be exercising. I don't know who needs to hear this today. Whoever you are out there who does not exercise on a regular basis, I want you to try it, starting today.
Speaker 3:Today, like now, if you're listening to this episode and you're cleaning the house, you actually are getting a little exercise. But if you're in the car when you get home, will you maybe put on your headphones again, listen to an audiobook, put on some music, listen to another one of these podcast episodes of mine and go on a 20-minute walk. You could listen to one of my episodes on a walk. Most of the episodes are between 20 and 25 minutes. You could put the leash on the dog and you could take your dog for a walk. Double dip on that. Make your dog happy, make you happy. Maybe you could triple dip. You can listen to another episode of the she's Just Getting Started podcast and now look what you've done state. It makes you feel better. It releases dopamine, it releases those feel-good hormones. It actually can curb hunger, like walking.
Speaker 3:Now some of you are like I don't love to walk, I love to run, I love to bike, I love to play pickleball, I want to play basketball, I want to go do a HIIT workout, I want to go to F45. I want to go to Orange Theory. I want to do all these things and do it. Do it Whatever makes you happy Right now, just because of my autoimmune stuff and my back is all whacked out. Walking is my BFF, walking is my friend. I walk most days at least four miles. I do.
Speaker 3:I put on audiobooks Before I discovered my very first podcast, which was Serial Podcast. Did y'all listen to this years ago? This was before I launched this podcast. It literally changed my life because I've been listening to the same music playlist forever on walks and runs and when I discovered podcasting, I literally was listening to Serial and went around a neighborhood and it was like 45 minutes or an hour and I was like what the heck just happened. I don't even know where that hour went. It was the greatest moment when I discovered podcasts. So you've already discovered them. You're ahead of me. Stick your headphones in, make it a date every day, y'all. I've got 300 episodes. Now you can go back and start listening, put it in your ear and go on a walk for 20 or 25 minutes. Heck, listen to two and go on a walk for an hour. I'm telling you it flies by and you can double dip with your dog and you can triple dip by learning.
Speaker 3:But know that exercising will reduce your stress level. It makes you feel good and actually I find that walking does not increase my hunger during the day. So I know some people are like but then I'm gonna start being more hungry and I'm gonna eat more. Let's not worry about that right now. I actually find that it it suppresses my appetite. I may be hungry after I walk, but throughout the day I'll notice a difference that I'm just not, as it's not making me as starving.
Speaker 3:Okay, you should exercise every day. This is a given. This is good for your heart, this is good for your soul, this is good for your mind, it's good for everything, whatever exercise you like to do. But again, you can start with walking. It is amazing to do and it will change your life. I'm not even kidding, okay, and you know what I do. I take my dog for two miles, come back home, dump him off and go back out for two miles, and my dog is a little scrappy little dog and is wild on the walk, so it's a big pain when I take him. It takes me a lot longer, but I do it anyways. Okay, I don't know why I wanted to tell you that, but I just wanted to tell you that because sometimes it is a lot of work with your dog, right? And some of you that have big dogs may think it's a lot of work too.
Speaker 3:Okay, number two y'all you need to eat. Well, do I need to talk about this? Everyone listen to me right now. You need to eat in a way that makes you feel good, whatever that is. I have some people tell me that a low-carb diet makes them feel good. I am the person that likes a well-rounded diet. That's when I feel my very best. I have all the food groups and I'm a happy person and I feel great and I can think and I can. That's what I do. Other people are, you know, on? Do you remember the Zone diet? Then there's the Paleo diet, the Mediterranean I don't even know if you need a diet. I literally think you could just start.
Speaker 3:If you don't know where to start with eating better, this is what I would do. I would add protein to whatever you're doing, and you don't have to have protein, you know, like a ton of protein at every meal. I would just add some extra protein because that will make you feel satiated, right, and it will support your muscles and all of that stuff. And then I would say, add some vegetables, vegetables and fruits to your diet like good ones and go from there and try not to eat so much manufactured food. I mean, that's the rule of thumb Less manufactured food, more real food. And you want to know the real summary Real food. Just eat real food Meats, fruits, vegetables, anything. That's just real food that God made Eat. That that's what I say if you want to start.
Speaker 3:I am not a nutritionist, so do not take what I say as a doctor or nutritionist. I'm trying to give you a place to start and to me that's the easiest way to start. Just cut out processed food if you can. I still eat it on a daily basis. I just don't eat that much of it because I'll go crazy and it's not practical. You're going out to lunch with friends. You're doing stuff on the weekends. You're going to eat something that's processed. You're going to eat something that's processed, but just make it a small part of your daily food intake. Y'all, please, eat well. Don't be eating junk food all day long and chips and french fries and all the stuff. They are good, I do have them. I do have them.
Speaker 3:But I'm telling you, with exercise and just eating right, like starting there works wonders for your mood, how your brain thinks. Your brain needs energy to think okay, and you really need to assess how you're eating, what you're putting into your body, okay. So number one was exercising every day. I exercise intentionally six days a week and the seventh day on Sundays. It's always debatable what I do. I may go play pickleball with my husband, I might take the dog for a little bit of walk, but I never count it, and then sometimes I just don't do anything. Maybe I go to Costco and walk around for a while and I go to the mall, but I'm still active, right, so we're gonna exercise every day. We're gonna eat well. Number three outsource what absolutely drains you. Listen to me right now what is draining you in your life? Outsource it. I don't know what it is for you. I usually say I think I said it on the last episode you start with your personal tasks that are draining you.
Speaker 3:If it's cleaning the house, if it's grocery shopping, there are alternatives. You can hire a maid. You can order Instacart, which I do. You can order HelloFresh, which I do, for two meals a week, because I don't want to think on two days of those week when I you know the week when I'm trying to figure out what to cook for dinner. Okay, you can do things like that. You don't like yard work? Hire a yard person. You don't like cleaning your pool? Get a pool person for that. You don't. You can't manage your kids Like you're going crazy. You can't work with your kids. Hire a nanny. I did that with my third child. I hired someone to be at my house and tend to my little one, ava, who's now 16, while I was working out of my home.
Speaker 3:Okay, so then move to your business and go. Okay, what's draining me really bad. Is it? Graphic design? Is it all the numbers and taxes and financials and bookkeeping? Outsource it. Get someone to help you. Stop draining your tank on tasks that are making you crazy and grumpy and crotchety and mad and resentful of your business every day just because you didn't have the strength to outsource it. Y'all this comes down to you, your strength, your ego. This is your ego talking to you. Outsource it, okay. Outsource what drains you. Quit being a control freak that you've got to have your hand in every single thing and be the hero. You already are a hero. You already are Superwoman or Superman. You already are that You're starting a business on top of your whole entire life, everything else that you have going on. Outsource what drains you, okay. So what was number one? Exercise every day. Number two eat well. Eat in a way that makes you feel good not crashing, not grumpy, not starving. In a way that makes you feel good. Outsource what trains you. That's number three. Number four connect with other humans. Connect with other humans. I don't care how you do it.
Speaker 3:Bunko, in your neighborhood girls night meeting up. Here's another quadruple dip. You could have a friend meet you to go on a walk. Well, I guess it would still be a triple dip because you wouldn't be able to listen to the podcast. So not only would you get exercise, you could walk your dog and you could meet a friend on your walk. Y'all could go on a walk together. That's a way you could be with another human. Y'all do things to have friends. Don Don't isolate yourself. You can also have business friends. You can go to networking meetings and you can do things like that. Have a friend over and watch a stupid show together. Go to a movie. Go eat. Meet some friends out for brunch. You could do coffee. You could do a 9 am coffee. Go meet your friends. You could go exercise together at a gym or at an F45. So you're double dipping you're doing exercise and you're seeing friends. Depends on how much time you have.
Speaker 3:We all know the value in human connection. God did not create us to be alone. If you are sitting there listening to this saying I'm isolated, I hardly have any friends. Number one know that. It's okay. There is a lot of people who have been going through that. It is just a new thing that we have now, because we all communicate via phone and we can see people online. We don't have to physically meet up, to catch up with people, okay, and so it's actually hurt us, and so we have to make an effort to meet up with other people, be out and about, do things, have friends, go to like a little happy hour, a little brunch or a little coffee, whatever it is. Connect with other people. It will make you so happy, it will get your mind off your business, it will bring you joy, it will make you feel like you have belonging.
Speaker 3:If you don't have connection, you have taken away the one thing that God wanted for you. That's why he created us so we could enjoy with him this beautiful planet. Right, it's never fun to be alone. Even God didn't want to be alone. He created animals and humans to enjoy the magnificence of this earth. And you were made to have communion with other people okay. To have community, to be with others and have friendships Okay, go to your friends. Kids, baseball game, like, whatever it is. Do something fun that builds camaraderie with other humans, okay.
Speaker 3:So that's, that's number four. And then number five give yourself space to think so you could actually triple dip on the walking like I was talking about. You could go on a walk with your dog. So you're getting exercise, you're making your pet very happy. But you could also not wear headphones and do not listen to my podcast and just give yourself space to think.
Speaker 3:My best ideas come when I am walking and another time is when I've just woken up. That's when I'm my most creative. Okay, your brain kind of goes in a different state. So if you don't have headphones on and you just walk around, you listen to the birds chirp, you say hi to your neighbors, maybe you walk your dog, you're doing a great thing for yourself, my friend. You are giving yourself space to like, think and to like, as you know. Again, as you're on a walk, your endorphins are going, your brain is moving, your blood is flowing. You will feel more at peace. It is like God's natural antidepressant.
Speaker 3:The sun outside maybe even it's cloudy, it's just the outdoor air does so much for you and that can be a way to have space For you. It may be having a cup of coffee sitting out on your patio. That is beautiful and wonderful. Maybe it is going to a coffee shop by yourself and just kind of sitting there and thinking. I just keep thinking about, like when I need to think about my business really hard, or thinking about something I literally automatically go to. Okay, I'm just going to go on a walk, even if it's with coffee in hand, like really slow, like for some reason, I know that when my blood gets flowing, I can think better. So you have to just ask yourself am I better just sitting somewhere and going driving to like a spot where I can look out at a lake? Or maybe you're near the ocean, or maybe you're near the ocean, or maybe you like downtown areas, maybe you like your back patio, a porch, what is it? Maybe you like to play golf, I don't know what it is. Give yourself space to think.
Speaker 3:You have to be thinking about your business. Should I be going in this direction? You can be praying for your business, which, if you're a believer, I think you should be. Of course, you should be praying for your business. Right, you could have some time with the Lord in a yoga class, but it's kind of hard sometimes, like, if you're in yoga and you're like trying to do all these moves, it's hard to like actually be thinking. So I just want to make sure that you can do something If you're going to do something active while you're thinking.
Speaker 3:Walking is probably one of the easiest things, because you're just mindless. You know you're not having to think about walking what you're doing, you can just think about your business. You need to think about your business. I think some of you are thinking too much all the time, all day long, instead of focusing just like on what are the priorities for this week and what do I need to get done. But you know others of you just aren't thinking it at all. You're just in the hustle, in the grind and you never step back. So step back and give yourself space to think about your business.
Speaker 3:So again y'all, self-care or taking care of yourself, whatever you want to call it is absolutely necessary for you as a business owner. You cannot be affected. If you are not in your right mind, if you don't feel good, if you are unhappy, if you're having all kinds of suffering in your life, it's very hard to be an effective business owner. Okay, these are the things that I think you should consider as you enter this journey and as you look to take care of yourself, because you are your business's best asset.
Speaker 3:Number one it's exercising every day, maybe five days a week, six days a week. Go for a goal that's more than whatever you're doing now. Number two eat well. Nourish your body. Your physical body is a gift from God and you need to take care of it. Number three outsource what drains you, whether that's personally stuff that's draining you, that's on your list or through your business. Number four connect with other humans. You were not built or created to be alone. Take time to have fun and laugh with other people. And number five give yourself brain space to think. You need to be thinking smart about your business.
Speaker 3:Okay, I'm so excited you are here. I hope this helped you. I hope this inspired you. I hope this gives you some new tools. I challenge you right now. Don't be that person that hears this and is like oh yeah, those are great things. Okay, bye, I'm off to be a stress case now and I'm going to keep wigging out every five seconds. No, put some of these, if not all of them, into play. I have them in the show notes below. Make sure you put them into play now.
