Speaker 1:Well, hello friends. How are you, how is everything going in your business?
Speaker 3:Well, hello friends. How are you? How is everything going in your business? I'm so excited for many of you who are just launching your business or you are seeing the growth that you just never thought would happen, and it's just so exciting. I'm so happy for you and I know the feeling.
Speaker 3:I remember the days when I was just starting my business, when I got my first sale. That wasn't a family member. Do y'all know what I'm talking about? Any of y'all that have product businesses, you know what I'm talking about. If you sell something that you make maybe you're an artist, some kind of maker, maybe even resell products, like I did with my online gift boutiques you know I'd have a couple of friends or family member buy something and I was waiting for that moment when, like, the first order comes in. That is not someone you know. It is the greatest feeling in the world. I even remember when I started this coaching business. Y'all I remember when I got my first client and I was on a walk and I saw it on my phone come through on my email and I literally had tears coming out of my eyes. I was on a walk and I saw it on my phone come through on my email and I literally had tears coming out of my eyes. I was so excited. I'm like somebody's actually hiring me to help them with their business. The best feeling in the world. So congrats to all of you. And, if you've, if you've, you know you've been years since you had your first sale. Take a moment to reflect on that and see how far you've come, because it's the best feeling.
Speaker 3:So, anyways, today we're talking about online marketing, what this landscape looks like, how it's changed. Whoo, Y'all things are a-changin'. They really are. Things that used to be working are not working. We're gonna talk about that. I want to talk about what this looked like even when I started. This business started very end of 2019, helping new business owners get going. And then we all know what happened. Covid hit right. We're going to talk about that. We're going to talk about what marketing actually looks like right now, like get a reality check of where we are. So you also know that you're not alone, because you may be sitting there going. Is it just my business or is everyone else having this problem? I guarantee you, right now, everyone else is having this problem. And then, in the third section of this episode, I'm going to talk about the shift, the big shift that you need to make. That's going to change everything for you and how you approach your marketing, so let's dive in.
Speaker 3:First of all, let's look at what marketing looked like just a few years ago Now. As I said, I started my business end of 2019. And I saw the boom in 2020 of people at home questioning their current career and trying to figure out what they want to do with their life, and so everybody was online scrambling. Do y'all remember this? Like I don't know what kind of career or job you had or if you'd started your business yet, but you were probably scrambling too. People were online. We were stuck at home. We were in our pajamas.
Speaker 3:Nobody knew what was going to happen with COVID. There was all the fighting, the vaccines, the whole thing. You know all of it, which we won't go into, but we all remember it all too well, right, and so from like 20 to 22, things were rocky, okay, but everyone was online, searching and open to change, right. Some people were not shopping, though, because they were scared. Like, am I not going to have a job? People got let go, so money was kind of scary from, like I remember, from when COVID hit to. Like you know, it was March when it hit, but I remember like April, May-ish, when people started seeing the severity of it. People were holding off on spending and even those holidays were kind of a little less what's the word? People just weren't spending as much money because you were just everything was just kind of scary and felt uneasy. Uh, but what I did see in the marketing world, even with products and Services that were being marketed online and what people were doing, People were businesses, were using very broad messages live your best life. Now let's just quote grow your business, be your authentic self. We had kind of these general kind of messages and even I've continued to use grow your business, but it's specifically for your type of passion-based business. We won't go into that. But but my point is things were much more general.
Speaker 3:Educational content did very well. I think YouTube started doing very well with educational content. Instead of it being just, like you'll know, Logan Paul and all that and all the crazy stunts. I think it evolved from just crazy stunts and video gamer people to like actually educational content and more health-related content, and we had it before, but it just I don't know. I don't know if we didn't get it on our feeds. I have no idea. It just was crazy that the algorithm started kind of evolving and getting better and then businesses like mine we offered free PDFs, which I've talked about before, my 16-step checklist and my guides. They have actually done well this entire time, which I'm very thankful for on that, and it has been a common thing, but I found a good printable that actually works. That 16-step checklist has been amazing, right. What's funny is that one gets downloaded more now even than my iKiGuy guide, which was what type of business are you meant to start? What is your calling? What is your overall purpose? That one still does well, but in the beginning like in 2020, that one was my clear winner Because everyone was trying to figure out what the heck they were doing with their life and what they were going to do with their career.
Speaker 3:So it makes sense, right. They're like digging and they're being very introspective and they're trying to figure out what are they doing? Do they want to continue to do the career that they've been doing, Like? I think COVID was a big wake-up call, right? Isn't it interesting to think about that? And it's interesting for me to see that the 16-step checklist for actually starting your business is the one that is more popular. Now. I think it's kind of funny. Now I am doing more ads for that one, so maybe that has something to do with it, but honestly, I think there are. There are people who are searching, but I'm finding that the people that want to get free stuff online. It's more like I need now. I need the checklist, I need the steps. Let's go right.
Speaker 3:I think what was working from like 20 to 22 was that the more posts you had, the more eyeballs you got. It was just a fact. You just needed to start publishing everywhere. You just wherever Pinterest, Instagram the reels were starting to get popular. Remember, wasn't there like three second? I don't know why I'm drawing a blank, but I feel like there was like three second, five second, like 10 second things, and now now things have gotten longer.
Speaker 3:When it was like very short content in your face, I think a lot of like promoters online were using big energy and making like buy it now and like, and making like buy it now and like high pressure was bigger over the last years Between 20 and 22, people were much more like demanding as marketers and they were. There is a difference now I think that I've seen, but there was just like that big energy that was going on, which I think big energy is good, but sometimes it can be overpowering and overbearing. And I think it's softened some since then, which we will go into, but I think I felt that in 20 to 22. And people were in consumption mode. They were hungry for ideas, possibilities, change, all of that during that time.
Speaker 3:So that's kind of what 20 to 22 looked like, and I want to set the stage because some of you may be new here where you're like well, I don't really care about that, I just showed up and I want to start a business, but you have to understand where this is coming from, because you may see things on YouTube and other things that you're researching that are actually older, that are marketing techniques that worked better then, and I don't want you to be bamboozled if you're watching some of those videos and you're watching how some of the marketers act and what they're doing and what they're offering, not realizing that the market has evolved, Okay. So, no matter what stage you're in, if you've just jumped in to business and online business, then know that today's world is different than it was just a few years ago, and to pay attention to the timeliness of what you are researching and looking at, Because it may it may, okay, some of the stuff may be timeless, but some of it is not. It worked better years ago and I don't want you to get caught in that trap, okay? So that's why it's important just to kind of realize what it felt like in 20 to 22, when everyone was online. We were learning how to do Zoom, we were, you know, figuring out Instagram, you know, and now we've got the longer reels and YouTube was a little different. I mean, it's just crazy to me to think about what has changed. So so, for part two of this, what does it look like now? Like, what's the reality check for today? Here we are. I'm recording this July of 2025. Okay, and I'm sure in a year I'm going to have to do another video because it's going to be different. But I want you to know, for those of you that keep up to date with this podcast, where we are today, so that you can be effective, doing research from other online marketers, from other coaches, and just kind of getting a check of like where are we? Okay, Number one people are tired, they're burned out on surface-level advice and just like cookie-cutter ways of doing things.
Speaker 3:I think people are just tired of it. I mean, do you find yourself when you scroll for things like, if things feel super general or just like cookie cutter and basic, you're like this isn't what I'm looking for. I need more detail than this. There's more noise than ever right now. Reels, TikToks, ads, webinars, podcasts, freebies Everything is going on. All the YouTube stuff. Pinterest is still having it today. I thought Pinterest was maybe going to fade out. No, no, no, no, no. There are a lot of people that are actually having very much success on Pinterest, but, you know, with the fear that TikTok is going to go away, is it going to stay? And there's been other software that has come up during the past years that hasn't made it right, and so Instagram is still here. Facebook is still here.
Speaker 3:You know you could argue that Instagram is for the younger crowd and Facebook is for the people of age like me, who are used to being on Facebook, right? So there's just all this kind of like noise everywhere and no one kind of knows, knows for sure where to, where to like, settle in, Like my husband was even saying some of his friends in one of his chat groups I think it was probably for football. Like you know, my husband's a huge Texas Longhorn fan and so he's in there with fellow Longhorn alumni talking about football season and it's July, so it's already full on talking about the recruits and all that stuff. Anyway, someone had sent him something on X and he's like I was on X, which he isn't normally on, because, like, this is the same stuff that I'm seeing on Instagram and it's the same stuff. If I flip over to Facebook, I'm like, yeah, I don't know what's about to happen with all this. Like, is stuff about to just kind of adapt? But it is kind of confusing, right, it is just confusing. Things were Twitter, now they're X. Is it all the same content? Is it different content? Skepticism is so much higher y'all With AI.
Speaker 3:Everyone's like is this real? Is this not real? I mean, a lot of times we can spot it now, like the more like action-filled videos with like a huge shark coming out and out of the ocean and like eating a whole boat and then spitting all the people back up. Like it's ridiculous. I know that sounds gross, but we're just seeing all this kind of bombastic AI stuff. I don't know where it's headed, where we're not going to be able to tell, but we can sort of tell. My 16-year-old daughter can look at images immediately and know Like. She will look at it and go, oh that's AI. And we're like wait, what? And my husband and I feel like we have an untrained eye or something and we're like, looking at it, going, wait, how did you tell that one what? So there are some images that are getting really muddy now, but this younger generation you know, they're sharp, they know what's going on and they can tell. They can, they can scope it out, but they are skeptics of everything and we all are. We have all become more skeptic. Is this real? And then when, when businesses are promoting things, you're like is this really true? Do we even believe all the reviews? Do we believe the reviews?
Speaker 3:Someone was telling me just yesterday they knew somebody that had started an online business. I'm not going to say anything of what it was, it's not someone, I know, it is not a client, it is not any of the kind of stuff that you and I sell or would sell but that they had all kinds of fake reviews before launching their business and I was just like I want to throw up right now, Because, as an online business owner, we need to be trustworthy, and it gives our online business world a bad bad name. When you hear stuff like that, I'm like they had fake reviews. And this person was like, yes, they have like over 200 fake reviews that they somehow God who knows how they did it and their product was just launching and they were fake. And I was like are you sure these aren't people that were testers that gave reviews? No, and so that's why all trust is so important right now.
Speaker 3:We are losing people's trust. That is the reality of today, though are losing people's trust. That is the reality of today, though you have to know that, as a seller, that people do not automatically trust you or what you are saying about your product or service. Right, Trust is basically the new currency. If you can gain trust, you can win people over. Right, Attention spans are short, but you know you have to be able to capture them right now as well. So it's like how do you gain trust when you're trying to gain attention, but you don't want to be too spammy and you don't want to be a weirdo? It's hard, but that's what marketing looks like right now, and I think this is interesting People aren't as much looking for gurus.
Speaker 3:This is what I have found in my research from multiple, multiple resources that people aren't just looking for gurus, they're actually looking for guides that are just a few steps ahead of them. So I thought that was kind of interesting. I don't know if it's because people aren't trusting gurus because they think, oh, it's just one person that's a guru, but they're looking for a guide. I don't know. I'm still trying to kind of sort through this in my head. I just was like researching all of this and that's why I had to pop on the podcast, because I'm like I have to tell you all this, so you know, but that's what I'm getting is that it's not necessarily that you have to be a guru, it's that you have to be a guide, and that will provide much relief. Like that actually makes me feel good, Like I don't need to go get some other certification or multiple certifications, Like I just need to be a few steps ahead, I just need to be a guide.
Speaker 3:Now it is because I'm a coach, but even if I was selling products, I could be like talking about how this was so great for me and I used it in my life, or someone I knew, and just kind of guide them through that, instead of just trying to be like making myself be a total expert in something like a total guru expert. Do you know what I'm saying? Right? So here's another thing that that is prevalent today, here in 2025, is that specificity matters. They want someone like if you're a coach or a service provider, who gets their situation and their stage, If you sell products, you need to be relatable and you need to be speaking specifically to the problem they are suffering.
Speaker 3:Whether you sell jewelry, candles, blankets, baby gifts, whatever it is right, you have to be specific, you have to speak. You can't be broad and say here is a baby blanket. You have to be explaining things and be very specific about what makes this great and what problems to solve. It's hypoallergenic, it's organic, it's super soft. It doesn't scratch the baby's face. Blah, blah, blah. It doesn't. You know, the dyes don't fade in the wash. It's very durable, it's sustainable. All the specifics matter these days.
Speaker 3:So are y'all kind of getting this the difference of what it looked like a few years ago, where we could be more general, pushy, energy, tons of like educational content that people wanted to learn, which I still think is good. However, there has to be some kind of marriage of this, where we show up, but we show up as a guide for people and we're not pushy and we're not general, we're specific and we speak to a certain group of people. So, part three of this episode here's what I want to get into, which is the meat of this, and this is a shift that you're going to make, which I just touched on, that people aren't looking for gurus, they're looking for guides. So, with that, your mental shift needs to go from I hope everyone is listening right now from marketer, where you're just trying to like, market your stuff and sell it and push it and show it in general and be like you need this and blah, blah, blah.
Speaker 3:From that marketer mindset to a mentor mindset. So let's let that sink in just for a second From marketer mindset to mentor mindset. So how might that shape something that you're going to work on today? Let's say, today you had already been thinking I need to do an Instagram post, I want to do a reel. How would you show up differently if I told you you just need to be a mentor, slash guide, you don't need to be a marketer, doesn't?
Speaker 2:that free? You Doesn't that feel less heavy? Because here's the deal.
Speaker 3:Marketers push products. They're pushy. Mentors help build belief about something, that something is possible, that things can be different, things can be better. Again, it doesn't matter if you're selling products or services, you have to think this way, or coaching programs or whatever you're selling Doesn't matter. You're not pushing products or services in your marketing, you are building belief. So let's let that sink in again for a moment. There's a lot of kind of aha moments here. If I told you, your Instagram post today gets to be from that place of a mentor, not a marketer and a place of building belief, what would you be helping them build belief about? What do they need to believe? Okay, think about that. This is so freeing.
Speaker 3:Mentors don't talk at people. They speak with them. They speak their language, they understand them. They speak their language, they understand them. So you're not talking at people like a marketer might. You're speaking like with them, almost like a conversation where you can't hear them, but you sort of can because you know your market so well.
Speaker 3:Mentors share real stories, struggles, transformations, without, like all the hype. People don't trust stuff anymore. So today you get to feel free that you don't have to do all this hypey stuff If you're not the type that wants to do dancing and, like you know, trendy stuff on Instagram or TikTok or whatever. You don't have to. If you are that type of person and you love doing that, do it. I'm just saying you're not forced to do that. You don't have to be a part of the hype crowd if you're not a hype person. I know people in my life that are hype people and that's just their personality and it's genuine. It's actually genuine to them. For many of you who come to me, it is not your genuine personality and so today you're freed. You're free of that. You don't have to do it right.
Speaker 3:Mentors offer guidance, not just strategy, and this was an interesting one for me. Mentors offer guidance, not just strategy, and I love that, and I was thinking about it even in my coaching calls that I've done with clients recently. Right, we kind of come up with a strategy for them, but I was realizing, wait, I actually am guiding them, I'm providing the path, I'm laying out these steps for them along with their overall strategy, keeping that in mind, but giving them the steps, saving them the time, giving them the clarity and assurance that they're doing the right things and they don't have to do all these other things, right, and so I was like, okay, maybe I'm doing this right, I hope, but I'm going to focus more on this. I mean, that's the truth. This is opening my eyes to, as a coach, right? As a coach to people like you to think how am I leading you, how am I guiding you? Am I making sure that, when I am showing up, I'm not marketing and speaking at you and just throwing stuff on you and not listening? Right, I need to be a good listener. So it does work for me, too. Like all of this is applicable to me. It works for me to remain a mentor and a guide, and I feel very freed by that. As a business coach. That that's what today's world is.
Speaker 3:I've been hoping for more authenticity in our market, because I think it gives coaches and other service providers a bad name when there's others out there that are so slimy, using icky tactics. And I can deal with it, and I don't like being a part of that club. Right, I'm just here to help people like you and to help guide you and help lead you on the path of living the life that you've dreamed of. Maybe you have a full-time job and you're trying to just build this business on the side as something fun for yourself, extra money for kids' sports or private school or whatever. It may be right. I'm here to do that for you and so I get it, because you're actually me. That's how I was. I just little did I know I was going to get to quit my full-time job and do this year after year. It's been amazing, right. But again, while you're doing your marketing, remember you are a mentor and you're just two to three steps ahead. You're not all the way at the top of the mountain where you're so far out of reach that people don't relate.
Speaker 3:I was thinking about this, in fact, with Pickleball. Yes, I just brought Pickleball up again. For those of you that don't like it, I'm sorry I'm bringing it up again, but it's part of my life now and so it's top of mind. It's like literally on my head. My husband likes to play all the time, but I was thinking about it watching this club. Like, we joined this club in December, so it's July. We joined this local Ace Pickleball Club and it's a franchise around. We love it. It's right by our house, so it's super convenient and we've watched it grow over the months and I've been observing how they're doing all their marketing, everything they're doing, and I'm like I'm sure they have it all set because they have so many locations. They already have a whole blueprint for what they do, the promos and the timeframes and all that stuff.
Speaker 3:But I was thinking about it. I was like why is pickleball such a craze right now and why do people love it? And you know what I realized? I realized and I was just saying this yesterday and I can't remember now if I was telling my husband or someone else at the pickleball courts, because we've made a lot of friends out there and we have conversations but I'm like I think why it's caught on so well is because it's so within reach for people athletically.
Speaker 3:Does that make sense? Like, athletically, like you can go play on a local, you can go play free on a local little pickleball court. But 70-year-olds are playing at our club. Right, any age is within reach. You don't have to be running and you, you can learn it if you just keep practicing. Like it's within reach. It's not like if my husband decided today he wanted to be a professional boxer, is that really in reach? And he's in his mid 50s? It's not really in reach. Let's just be honest. But pickleball is within reach and there's something really exciting about that. It's not so far out that we could never be sort of good. Right, being sort of good and being able to play with like a lot of people is within reach for people. You don't have to run all over a court. I played tennis for many years so I understand the difference right and it's just so nice. And older people are super good because they've gotten super good at the placement of their balls.
Speaker 3:My point is Pickleball is growing because it's within reach, and the same is for your business that you be relatable. Where it's within reach, you be the Pickleball of your industry. Where it's something exciting, something fun, it's not so out of touch with life and it makes people happy. Whatever it is that you do, you are bringing joy to people's lives. In some way. You're helping solve some kind of problem with relationships, fun business, health, the way they look, the way they feel, their home, whatever it is.
Speaker 3:Be within reach, you get to be within reach. That's the cool thing, think about it. You get to be within reach. You don't have to be so far ahead of people and be like, yes, I mean, I don't have to sit here and go. I'm a $10 million coach, like. I don't have to do that. I'm within reach because I'm showing you that you can build a business that is whatever you want it to be. However much money you're trying to make, I want to help you get there.
Speaker 3:But this does not have to be a business that you start that you have to make a million dollars. I think that feels out of reach for a lot of people, right? So I've always tried to make people feel good that, like when I started my business, I wanted to make $500 a month. That was my big goal and you know little did I know. Over the years it kept growing, but I had that time in my life where I was able to grow it into two businesses multi-six-figure, doing the whole thing.
Speaker 3:Now I'm in a different season. I get to coach Like you could call it consulting. It's coaching, it's helping people. I get to do it on my time. I've got one kid left at home. I'm getting to structure this exactly how I want. This is what I want for you. I don't want you to feel like you have to have a bazillion dollar business and you may be saying, well then, you're not the coach for me because I want a bazillion dollar business right now, then you're right. Maybe I'm not the coach for you, but I am trying to help people make business ownership within reach for their life. What are you doing to make your business, your product, your service, your program, whatever it is within reach for people? What are you doing? This is how you can make it today and y'all.
Speaker 3:This is the best news ever. I think a lot of times we get caught up. This is the worst news ever. That there's a lot of noise and there's Instagram and there's TikTok. Actually, this is the best news ever that there's a lot of noise and there's Instagram and there's TikTok and there's. Actually, this is the best news ever that people like us, who are actually just honestly building a business with integrity and really want to help people.
Speaker 3:We are having a moment. We are having a moment right now because people are sick of the inauthenticity. People are totally sick of it, and you get to be the one that's like yeah, I'm real, I'm within reach, I'm relatable, I'm talking to you with real stories from my own life and how I've dealt with things and and sharing with you why I started this business and why I care so much about this product or service. We are having a moment. It's our era. It's our era right now. This is the best news ever. This is the best news ever for us.
Speaker 3:If we were one of those marketers that was sleazy and annoying and pushy, I think they're having a moment, too, to realize. I can't be this way. It's annoying. People are turned off, but we you and I are having a moment Right. When you show up like a mentor instead of a marketer, you are going to attract clients that are perfectly aligned with you. It's amazing. It's awesome, right, and those curious people or the people who are not for you, they will go their own way, and it's okay. You can build trust faster because you're real. You're not perfect, you're just real right, and you'll get remembered because you're relatable and you're relevant, okay, so today, I hope you feel a weight lifted off. I hope you realize that we are having a moment, because authenticity is winning right now and being specific is winning, and sharing real stories and just needing to be a guide, a couple of steps ahead of other people, is all that is needed. That's all that is needed, and it is the best feeling ever. Okay. So I'm so excited for you. This is your time.
