And it was stunning. And all of a sudden"},{"startTime":53.43,"endTime":57.75,"body":"I asked Charlie, so Charlie,"},{"startTime":58.32,"endTime":61.26,"body":"what do you do? And I was like, number one,"},{"startTime":161.4,"endTime":164.76,"body":"since when of you being concerned about"},{"startTime":161.4,"endTime":164.76,"body":"somebody having an opinion about what"},{"startTime":164.76,"endTime":167.01,"body":"you state is truth. And so today,"},{"startTime":167.31,"endTime":171.75,"body":"the truth with a capital T that I just"},{"startTime":167.31,"endTime":171.75,"body":"want to put out there is how not to get"},{"startTime":171.75,"endTime":176.01,"body":"business. I'm gonna repeat that again."},{"startTime":171.75,"endTime":176.01,"body":"This is how you not get business. Okay?"},{"startTime":176.015,"endTime":177.48,"body":"So back in the day,"},{"startTime":177.69,"endTime":182.41,"body":"starting my photography career and I was"},{"startTime":177.69,"endTime":182.41,"body":"taking any gig that I could shoot both"},{"startTime":182.41,"endTime":185.41,"body":"paid and unpaid. What I wanted"},{"startTime":182.41,"endTime":185.41,"body":"to do was build a portfolio."},{"startTime":185.41,"endTime":188.17,"body":"I wanted to get a front row seat to"},{"startTime":185.41,"endTime":188.17,"body":"how other businesses were growing their"},{"startTime":188.17,"endTime":189.04,"body":"creative businesses."},{"startTime":189.07,"endTime":193.42,"body":"And I really wanted to connect and help"},{"startTime":189.07,"endTime":193.42,"body":"with other photographers. So I had been,"},{"startTime":193.48,"endTime":195.49,"body":"um, second shooting or third shooting."},{"startTime":195.7,"endTime":198.19,"body":"This means that there is the first"},{"startTime":195.7,"endTime":198.19,"body":"photographer that's the business owner,"},{"startTime":198.19,"endTime":200.74,"body":"and then they assemble a team"},{"startTime":198.19,"endTime":200.74,"body":"depending on the size of the event."},{"startTime":201.16,"endTime":204.7,"body":"And so oftentimes second and third"},{"startTime":201.16,"endTime":204.7,"body":"photographers would get paid,"},{"startTime":204.7,"endTime":208.39,"body":"but I was doing whatever kind of gig"},{"startTime":204.7,"endTime":208.39,"body":"I would be driving, you know, two,"},{"startTime":208.395,"endTime":212.98,"body":"three hours, I'd shoot for 10 hours and"},{"startTime":208.395,"endTime":212.98,"body":"then I'd drive home like another two,"},{"startTime":212.98,"endTime":215.41,"body":"three hours. And I wouldn't"},{"startTime":212.98,"endTime":215.41,"body":"expect a penny from it."},{"startTime":215.47,"endTime":216.94,"body":"I just wanted the experience."},{"startTime":217.33,"endTime":219.49,"body":"So there was a few people who"},{"startTime":217.33,"endTime":219.49,"body":"I wanted to shoot with locally."},{"startTime":219.49,"endTime":223.36,"body":"So just imagine my surprise and delight"},{"startTime":219.49,"endTime":223.36,"body":"when I get an email from a local"},{"startTime":223.36,"endTime":224.08,"body":"photographer."},{"startTime":224.08,"endTime":228.13,"body":"I had been second shooting around two"},{"startTime":224.08,"endTime":228.13,"body":"years at this time and I was shooting"},{"startTime":228.43,"endTime":232.27,"body":"like one to two weddings a"},{"startTime":228.43,"endTime":232.27,"body":"weekend oftentimes for free."},{"startTime":232.36,"endTime":233.89,"body":"And I would just talk"},{"startTime":232.36,"endTime":233.89,"body":"to my husband. I'm like,"},{"startTime":233.89,"endTime":235.36,"body":"this is what I wanna do with my business."},{"startTime":235.36,"endTime":238.18,"body":"And I feel like if I can build a"},{"startTime":235.36,"endTime":238.18,"body":"portfolio, even if I'm not getting paid,"},{"startTime":238.33,"endTime":242.35,"body":"that the portfolio will actually earn"},{"startTime":238.33,"endTime":242.35,"body":"its way to income. Now that was a bet,"},{"startTime":242.355,"endTime":244.78,"body":"but it was a strategic"},{"startTime":242.355,"endTime":244.78,"body":"bet. And so lo and behold,"},{"startTime":244.81,"endTime":248.86,"body":"I started helping other photographers and"},{"startTime":244.81,"endTime":248.86,"body":"a photographer reached out to me and I"},{"startTime":248.865,"endTime":251.56,"body":"had been wanting to shoot"},{"startTime":248.865,"endTime":251.56,"body":"with this queen forever."},{"startTime":251.86,"endTime":255.22,"body":"She was like on the top if there was"},{"startTime":251.86,"endTime":255.22,"body":"a pyramid of aspirational models."},{"startTime":255.22,"endTime":257.92,"body":"Like she was at the top of this"},{"startTime":255.22,"endTime":257.92,"body":"pyramid. And so I was like,"},{"startTime":258.04,"endTime":261.67,"body":"I can't believe she's asking me to come"},{"startTime":258.04,"endTime":261.67,"body":"second shoot this wedding with her."},{"startTime":262.06,"endTime":266.17,"body":"So we get to the event and we're getting"},{"startTime":262.06,"endTime":266.17,"body":"out our gear and our bags and she hands"},{"startTime":266.17,"endTime":269.95,"body":"me a stack of business cards and"},{"startTime":266.17,"endTime":269.95,"body":"she's like, Hey, if anybody asks,"},{"startTime":270.28,"endTime":274.75,"body":"this is your business. And I looked at"},{"startTime":270.28,"endTime":274.75,"body":"her business cards and I was like, oh,"},{"startTime":274.81,"endTime":277.99,"body":"okay, sure. And what I didn't say,"},{"startTime":277.99,"endTime":281.92,"body":"because I was new and I was nervous and"},{"startTime":277.99,"endTime":281.92,"body":"I wasn't comfortable using my voice to"},{"startTime":282.4,"endTime":286.87,"body":"actually ask sincere questions, I had"},{"startTime":282.4,"endTime":286.87,"body":"just said, okay, and I put them in a bag."},{"startTime":287.44,"endTime":292.09,"body":"But the emotion that it brought up for"},{"startTime":287.44,"endTime":292.09,"body":"me was I didn't feel like she trusted me."},{"startTime":292.48,"endTime":297.01,"body":"In fact, I thought she"},{"startTime":292.48,"endTime":297.01,"body":"doubted me. I was like, why?"},{"startTime":298.33,"endTime":300.64,"body":"And the rest of the evening"},{"startTime":298.33,"endTime":300.64,"body":"I was kind of like, okay,"},{"startTime":300.64,"endTime":304.51,"body":"let me watching my Ps and Qs making sure"},{"startTime":300.64,"endTime":304.51,"body":"that like I wanted to wear a sign that"},{"startTime":304.51,"endTime":304.96,"body":"said,"},{"startTime":304.96,"endTime":309.31,"body":"I am not the business owner and I wanted"},{"startTime":304.96,"endTime":309.31,"body":"to do such a great job for her because"},{"startTime":309.31,"endTime":312.67,"body":"she was trusting me. But in the back of"},{"startTime":309.31,"endTime":312.67,"body":"my mind I wondered, did she trust me?"},{"startTime":313.36,"endTime":318.25,"body":"So what happens is I was out doing this"},{"startTime":318.31,"endTime":320.59,"body":"for her and I had to believe,"},{"startTime":320.59,"endTime":324.22,"body":"now looking back that the reason why we"},{"startTime":320.59,"endTime":324.22,"body":"started our day on that note was because"},{"startTime":324.22,"endTime":328.72,"body":"somebody must have burned her in the"},{"startTime":324.22,"endTime":328.72,"body":"past. I actually didn't get it. Um,"},{"startTime":329.11,"endTime":332.92,"body":"what happened was I then"},{"startTime":329.11,"endTime":332.92,"body":"later started my business."},{"startTime":333.19,"endTime":336.7,"body":"So I'm starting my business and I'm not"},{"startTime":333.19,"endTime":336.7,"body":"actually concerned about getting second"},{"startTime":336.7,"endTime":340.42,"body":"or third shooters because my husband and"},{"startTime":336.7,"endTime":340.42,"body":"my business partner was second shooting"},{"startTime":340.42,"endTime":344.83,"body":"for me. And so after that"},{"startTime":340.42,"endTime":344.83,"body":"incident with that first shooter,"},{"startTime":345.19,"endTime":347.98,"body":"anytime I shot for any other"},{"startTime":345.19,"endTime":347.98,"body":"photographer, I just thought,"},{"startTime":347.98,"endTime":349.45,"body":"well I wanna make sure that they trust me."},{"startTime":349.51,"endTime":351.28,"body":"And so at the beginning of the night"},{"startTime":349.51,"endTime":351.28,"body":"or at the beginning of the day,"},{"startTime":351.28,"endTime":352.57,"body":"whenever it would start, I say, Hey,"},{"startTime":352.57,"endTime":354.97,"body":"do you have a couple business"},{"startTime":352.57,"endTime":354.97,"body":"cards in case anybody asks me?"},{"startTime":355.36,"endTime":358.31,"body":"And you would be so surprised at the"},{"startTime":355.36,"endTime":358.31,"body":"way that people would respond to that."},{"startTime":358.31,"endTime":360.35,"body":"They'd be like, oh"},{"startTime":358.31,"endTime":360.35,"body":"yeah, thank you so much."},{"startTime":360.56,"endTime":362.42,"body":"It established such a good relationship."},{"startTime":362.42,"endTime":364.97,"body":"And the response was like so"},{"startTime":362.42,"endTime":364.97,"body":"visceral that I thought to myself,"},{"startTime":365.21,"endTime":369.29,"body":"there is something here. It's not just"},{"startTime":365.21,"endTime":369.29,"body":"one photographer who's saying like, Hey,"},{"startTime":369.47,"endTime":372.241,"body":"the protocol is when somebody asks like"},{"startTime":369.47,"endTime":372.241,"body":"you hand them my business card and not"},{"startTime":372.246,"endTime":374.45,"body":"yours. And to me that was such"},{"startTime":372.246,"endTime":374.45,"body":"a foreign idea. I was like,"},{"startTime":374.6,"endTime":378.62,"body":"why would I ever hand out my business"},{"startTime":374.6,"endTime":378.62,"body":"card when I'm shooting for you?"},{"startTime":378.71,"endTime":379.73,"body":"It didn't cross my mind."},{"startTime":379.82,"endTime":382.16,"body":"But then all of a sudden when I asked"},{"startTime":379.82,"endTime":382.16,"body":"other photographers for the business"},{"startTime":382.16,"endTime":384.02,"body":"cards, they were like, yes,"},{"startTime":382.16,"endTime":384.02,"body":"please. And I was like,"},{"startTime":384.02,"endTime":387.65,"body":"something is here and"},{"startTime":384.02,"endTime":387.65,"body":"it's not personal. Well,"},{"startTime":387.68,"endTime":389.03,"body":"when I became a first shooter,"},{"startTime":389.03,"endTime":391.31,"body":"which means I was my business"},{"startTime":389.03,"endTime":391.31,"body":"and I was booking these events,"},{"startTime":391.34,"endTime":393.41,"body":"I didn't actually have to book"},{"startTime":391.34,"endTime":393.41,"body":"a second shooter because jd,"},{"startTime":393.5,"endTime":396.23,"body":"my husband and business partner, like"},{"startTime":393.5,"endTime":396.23,"body":"I just said, was shooting with me."},{"startTime":396.47,"endTime":398.39,"body":"So then this happens,"},{"startTime":398.87,"endTime":402.56,"body":"we decided for a larger event to"},{"startTime":398.87,"endTime":402.56,"body":"bring on a third shooter. Now,"},{"startTime":402.65,"endTime":406.16,"body":"I did not think, and I was"},{"startTime":402.65,"endTime":406.16,"body":"actually just, I'll be honest,"},{"startTime":406.16,"endTime":409.01,"body":"I was a little uncomfortable"},{"startTime":406.16,"endTime":409.01,"body":"telling this third shooter,"},{"startTime":409.07,"endTime":412.61,"body":"here's my business"},{"startTime":409.07,"endTime":412.61,"body":"cards. If somebody asks,"},{"startTime":412.76,"endTime":414.56,"body":"this is the business that"},{"startTime":412.76,"endTime":414.56,"body":"you're gonna be promoting today,"},{"startTime":414.59,"endTime":419.42,"body":"this is the business of this event. I"},{"startTime":414.59,"endTime":419.42,"body":"didn't say that because I was afraid,"},{"startTime":419.42,"endTime":423.56,"body":"embarrassed. I didn't want to make that"},{"startTime":419.42,"endTime":423.56,"body":"person feel the way that I had. Okay,"},{"startTime":423.98,"endTime":428.3,"body":"you wanna know what happened the"},{"startTime":423.98,"endTime":428.3,"body":"day of that event. Somebody asks,"},{"startTime":428.9,"endTime":433.28,"body":"Hey, can I have your information?"},{"startTime":428.9,"endTime":433.28,"body":"And what does she do?"},{"startTime":433.82,"endTime":436.7,"body":"She hands her business card, not mine."},{"startTime":437.18,"endTime":440.24,"body":"Now she could have asked myself"},{"startTime":437.18,"endTime":440.24,"body":"or JD for our business card,"},{"startTime":440.66,"endTime":444.11,"body":"but what happens is, in the mind of the"},{"startTime":440.66,"endTime":444.11,"body":"consumer, people who are at the event,"},{"startTime":444.26,"endTime":447.56,"body":"we were a team. And so when"},{"startTime":444.26,"endTime":447.56,"body":"somebody's asking for a business card,"},{"startTime":447.56,"endTime":450.41,"body":"they're asking it on behalf of the"},{"startTime":447.56,"endTime":450.41,"body":"team. And as the first shooter,"},{"startTime":450.41,"endTime":453.44,"body":"I'm running around and I'm doing all"},{"startTime":450.41,"endTime":453.44,"body":"these things as the business owner."},{"startTime":453.71,"endTime":456.04,"body":"And that is when I"},{"startTime":453.71,"endTime":456.04,"body":"learned a valuable lesson."},{"startTime":457.13,"endTime":461.51,"body":"If you are providing a service that"},{"startTime":462.04,"endTime":467.03,"body":"somebody else is paying"},{"startTime":462.04,"endTime":467.03,"body":"for, like at an event,"},{"startTime":467.27,"endTime":469.64,"body":"it is not a job that you had booked,"},{"startTime":470.06,"endTime":474.92,"body":"nor are the services that you are"},{"startTime":470.06,"endTime":474.92,"body":"providing something that you had booked or"},{"startTime":474.92,"endTime":479.12,"body":"achieved or pursued or marketed"},{"startTime":474.92,"endTime":479.12,"body":"or branded or secured on your own."},{"startTime":479.9,"endTime":484.37,"body":"If you are ever in that"},{"startTime":479.9,"endTime":484.37,"body":"position, never ever, ever, ever,"},{"startTime":484.37,"endTime":489.14,"body":"ever pretend like you are. It ruins"},{"startTime":484.37,"endTime":489.14,"body":"credibility and it ruins trust."},{"startTime":489.83,"endTime":494.63,"body":"So you know, just imagine"},{"startTime":489.83,"endTime":494.63,"body":"how uncomfortable it was for"},{"startTime":494.63,"endTime":499.34,"body":"that family came up to me and they said"},{"startTime":494.63,"endTime":499.34,"body":"that the photographer was named with"},{"startTime":499.34,"endTime":502.7,"body":"Jasmine Starr, but the card I have"},{"startTime":499.34,"endTime":502.7,"body":"is, and then they said that name."},{"startTime":503.33,"endTime":508.16,"body":"That's when I knew, oh, that"},{"startTime":503.33,"endTime":508.16,"body":"happens. And it happens a lot."},{"startTime":508.85,"endTime":513.71,"body":"I realized that the value of my"},{"startTime":508.85,"endTime":513.71,"body":"reputation was not the same value"},{"startTime":513.71,"endTime":516.89,"body":"that other people held."},{"startTime":513.71,"endTime":516.89,"body":"So I'm gonna tell you, uh,"},{"startTime":516.895,"endTime":518.27,"body":"about something that happened recently."},{"startTime":518.33,"endTime":522.92,"body":"And this is why I debated sharing this"},{"startTime":518.33,"endTime":522.92,"body":"podcast because I don't wanna come in and"},{"startTime":523.07,"endTime":527.36,"body":"talk negatively about a"},{"startTime":523.07,"endTime":527.36,"body":"person or a situation,"},{"startTime":527.36,"endTime":531.14,"body":"but I do actually wanna talk about the"},{"startTime":527.36,"endTime":531.14,"body":"reality of what in fact happened and the"},{"startTime":531.14,"endTime":532.28,"body":"differences between the two."},{"startTime":533.03,"endTime":537.39,"body":"So recently I got a text"},{"startTime":533.03,"endTime":537.39,"body":"message from a number I had not"},{"startTime":537.39,"endTime":539.37,"body":"recognized and I was like,"},{"startTime":537.39,"endTime":539.37,"body":"oh, I just think it's spam."},{"startTime":539.37,"endTime":543.42,"body":"And then when I opened the text"},{"startTime":539.37,"endTime":543.42,"body":"message, it said, hi Jasmine,"},{"startTime":543.99,"endTime":547.98,"body":"I am the former executive"},{"startTime":543.99,"endTime":547.98,"body":"assistant of blank."},{"startTime":548.37,"endTime":551.97,"body":"I left the organization a couple"},{"startTime":548.37,"endTime":551.97,"body":"months ago to do my own thing."},{"startTime":552.69,"endTime":555.81,"body":"I am.
