The book of Jonah is too often remembered as a smiling cartoon whale and a smiling little man wearing sandals on a sandy beach after graciously having been spit out into freedom to follow God's will. The book of Jonah, however, is far more than the cartoon fairy tale it is often reduced to. It is a story of rebellion, the wrath of God and the mercy of God on both a runaway prophet and a nation of godless murderers. It is a story of God's mission to show compassion to the compassionless and mercy to the merciless. It puts on grand display our sinfulness and God's power, sovereignty, judgement and mercy all in such a way that it ultimately points us to the coming of the cross of Jesus Christ!
