Travel Australia Podcast by The Feel Good Family
G’day! We’re Katie, Paul and Jasper Guerin from Queensland’s Gold Coast.
We’ve been traveling full time around Australia as a family for over 5 years in our Toyota Landcruiser 79 series and Zone RV Sojourn off road caravan.
In September 2019 we packed up our lives and hit the road for full time travel around Australia. After a 4 year IVF journey to create our family and long hours spent working our corporate roles we started to wonder if there was a better way. After Jasper was born our perception of what really mattered changed and we realised our most precious commodity was time. We wanted to create more time together as a family, and spend our days sharing experiences and making memories to last a lifetime.
What seemed like a crazy idea at the time set in motion a 2 year plan to pack up our lives, downsize our ‘stuff’ and explore this great country of ours traveling Australia full time in a caravan.
It is the best decision we ever made, and over 5 years and over 180,000km later we are still loving traveling this incredible country and living in our tiny home on wheels.
Each week we produce an episode of our Travel Australia series for our YouTube Channel and free to air television (Channel 31 Melbourne and Channel 44 Adelaide and new in 2025 SKY TV New Zealand), as well as a weekly Podcast that showcases destinations, experiences, RV Industry News and Special Guests that share their journey around Australia!
If you are planning on road tripping Australia, are dreaming of tackling your own ‘Big Lap’ or are just looking for inspiration to get out there on weekends or school holidays, we’d love you to travel with us and experience the best this country has to offer!

Welcome to the Travel Australia podcast. We have Paul, Katie and Jasper from the Feel Good family Join us as we explore this great country, Australia, its people, places and cultures.
Speaker 2:Yes, it's the Travel Australia podcast, where we share the latest in all the industry news road trip travel, caravanning and camping, product reviews, guest interviews, where to go, what to do and so much more. Thanks for joining us.
Speaker 1:All right. This week it is the Battle of the Borders Queensland versus New South Wales. We share two of the best beach camps around Australia's coastline and give our verdict, plus special guests getting lost down under. That's a good name, isn't it?
Speaker 2:It is, and boy don't we love those guys. But look, paulie, I have to say I have absolutely loved being coastal again After all of our time last year in the outback in Central Australia. There is nothing like seeing those baby blues of the ocean.
Speaker 1:Look, it is true, and Jasper looks like an Oompa Loompa at the moment. He's got red running through his veins, but also through his paws.
Speaker 2:Yes, well, we're about to replace that with sand. Sand everywhere, not only through Jasper, but all through the caravan as well, I'm sure.
Speaker 1:All right. Now when we look at the coastline of Australia, I mean you cannot get a better backyard. It is truly spectacular, world-class. And two of our favourites really border between Queensland, New South Wales or northern New South Wales, and that's the famous beach breaks of Burley Beach, plus 30 kilometres down the road, Kingscliff. Now if you look at a two-hour to three-hour drive radius from these locations, it's hard to believe that there's over 4 million people actually living here, so that's a lot of people to put in only a couple of these locations.
Speaker 2:Absolutely Well, and that was us too. You know. Our home base was there at Kira, right on the southern end of the Gold Coast, before we hit the road traveling full time over five years ago now. So we love this area. It's dear to our hearts. Let's start talking about beautiful Burley Beach Ball. It is such an iconic location, of course, world famous for the surf break there. It is absolutely stunning with that Burley headland and somewhere that we have stayed a number of times across our travels, at the Burley Beach Tourist Park. It is one of the Gold Coast tourist parks. They have a number of parks scattered all across the Gold Coast.
Speaker 1:Look, I think they actually have 10 in total, and we have stayed and played at every one of them. In fact, I think we've filmed at every one of them as well.
Speaker 2:Yes, you're right, we have. It is our hometown, of course, so we do love getting back there and seeing family and friends. But Burley is stunning and it made a great base for us when we were presenting at the let's Go Gold Coast Caravan and Camping Expo.
Speaker 1:And look, we should actually give mention. Right now we are recording live at the Victorian Caravan and Camping Super Show. It is the biggest and the best show going around the country and with over 50,000 people in attendance man, this place is absolutely buzzing. Oh, it really is. And 50,000 people in attendance man, this place is absolutely buzzing.
Speaker 2:Oh, it really is. And look, I have to say we've picked the best spot to record this podcast. We've set up with our mates at the Stratus Outdoors exhibit and I tell you what they've absolutely nailed their display. They've even got the fire pit cranking, which is so welcomed on these chilly Victorian mornings. But back to Burleigh, paul. What a stunning location. It wouldn't matter whether you were working, playing, if you're new to the Gold Coast or whether, like us, you've spent plenty of time there. This is a location that never fails to disappoint.
Speaker 1:Oh, absolutely. And for me as a whippersnipper, a young kid growing up on the Gold Coast, I went to Surfers Paradise Primary School. I used to be able to get my 20 cents, get on the bus and come down here with my mates. We'd get the 605 bus and that was the time, not the number I was going to say it's a good memory.
Speaker 1:And join everyone out there trying to grab a wave. Well, now it is an absolute mecca, of course, world famous, but when we look at the caravan park, there are some pros and there's some cons.
Speaker 2:Absolutely, and I would say that about Burley as a whole. Now you know these iconic places. When the word gets out, of course, everybody wants to be there, and so Burley, over the years, has become super popular and full of people. So if you love mingling with plenty of others, then you will absolutely love Burley. But perhaps you're after something quieter. Then maybe you'll be more inclined to stay where we're about to talk, over the border in northern New South Wales. But the van park is great Now look, it has been there for a long time. So with all of these larger rigs on the road, you really do need to check whether there will be a site available to accommodate the length of your van. They do have certainly different sizes for different rigs but again, being an older park, you just need to double check that before you book.
Speaker 1:In fact, we snagged the very last site. We were very late in booking, snagged the very last site, we were very late in booking. Now, as we always mention with our bookings, wikicamps best 10 bucks you'll spend in the caravan camping industry. It is the app for knowing where you're going and that is where we actually found and booked both of these campgrounds that we're talking about.
Speaker 2:So, some of the pros, obviously the location, yeah, you can literally park up and walk everywhere and not use your vehicle at all.
Speaker 1:Love that. You're straight across the road from the bowls club, straight across the road from the surf club, straight across the road from world-class Rickshaw's restaurant bars, cafes, the coffee nooks, I mean the boutique shopping is off the Richter. Yes, If you're into that kind of thing.
Speaker 2:That's right. And of course that incredible Burley Beach and the headland there that you can do the walk all the way around to Tellabudra. There is so much to love about this location. I guess the real cons would be, of course, the busyness of Burley as a whole. It is a hustling, bustling place from the moment you know that first spark of twilight of a morning which is, you know, in Queensland, at about 4am.
Speaker 1:Exactly. You'll see the place buzzing at 5am every day. Queenslanders, early risers. We don't have daylight savings, so you know you can see why everyone's up so early.
Speaker 2:Absolutely. And of course, at the moment there is a lot of construction happening as they lay the foundations for the light rail on the Gold Coast to extend down here through Burley. So that means a ridiculous amount of roadworks which do go on all during the day and, I hate to say it, overnight as well. So if you're a light sleeper, do take that into account.
Speaker 1:Well, really, there's two things you need, and that is earplugs, yes, and a bottle of red wine.
Speaker 2:Sounds good to me. But look, that's temporary and that will come and go and then the light rail will be operating and hopefully not causing too much noise overnight.
Speaker 1:Now we paid $75, including a little fee there for Jasper Rooney. Yes, so that's what you're looking at. That's for a powered site, full hookup. But now let's cross the border, only 30 kilometres away. It'll take you 31 minutes.
Speaker 2:How good is that? And follow the coastline. That would be our suggestion. Wind your way through Koolangatta Tweed. Really maximise this beautiful drive rather than just getting straight out on that M1.
Speaker 1:Great recommendation and before you know it, you are again at another beachside paradise.
Speaker 2:However, this is without the population or the hustle and bustle or the noise. This is truly incredible.
Speaker 2:I mean I think it definitely helps that we had the most picture-perfect day when we arrived at Kingscliff Beach. There it is part of the Tweed Parks holiday group. They have a number of stunning caravan parks scattered all across northern New South Wales, from Tweed Heads down, and we have stayed at plenty of them. We haven't done them all yet, but they are on our bucket list to do. But this one at Kingscliff Beach, it is absolute beachfront location and look, we splashed out, we got ourselves the very last.
Speaker 1:Well, hang on, katie. You say we splashed out. Kate did not mention to me the fee until after we left, which is possibly a good thing. However, when you roll up and you see your campsite, you're like oh wow.
Speaker 2:Yes, look, I was hesitant. Actually I'll be honest. When I jumped online to book, it was the last premium site, which is absolute beachfront. There's just a great little walking path and then the sand dunes between you and that crystal clear blue ocean, and I thought you know it's been so long. What the heck? Write a check, as our good mates say, and so I did. But I tell you what paying $142 a night yes, you heard me right, $142 a night hurts, it hurts. It doesn't stop people from going, though. The caravan park was completely booked out.
Speaker 1:Last site. Again, we snagged the last site, pole position. It was site number seven. Yeah, and it'd be our recommendation.
Speaker 2:That'd be the one to get, yes definitely what we love about this park the overall layout. It has a massive footprint. As I mentioned, it is absolute beachfront. The sites are huge, and not just the premium sites. They have laid this van park out with campers in mind, really respectful of each other's space.
Speaker 1:And not unlike Burley. You still have that world-class walk along the entire length of Kingscliff Beach that you can ride, cycle walk, hitchhike no, not quite hitchhike, but you know you really can People watch. We love that. And then you've got bowls club next door, surf club down the other end, world-class restaurants, boutique shopping. Everything is there right at your fingertips, and literally you walk out your door and you're there. One thing that Katie did that we'd highly recommend is a click and collect from Woolies. Now we're back on the East Coast, don't? We love that?
Speaker 2:Oh, absolutely. It just makes it so easy. And if you can time it to perfection like we did, we rolled in, we unhitched the van, raced up, picked up our Woolies order, that's no time spent through the grocery shop aisles. We were out there down on the beach. Jasper had his boogie board in the water, having the time of his life, and it really was an absolutely perfect couple of days for us. We jagged the weather as well. It was supposed to come in all rainy and it just didn't. So look, I hate to choose.
Speaker 1:No, you can't be a fence sitter, Katie.
Speaker 2:Look, I was born in New South Wales. I will admit I've been in Queensland the majority of my life, so I do class myself as a Queenslander, but if this was state of origin I would be going for the blues on this one. That location down there at Kingscliff Beach Absolutely sensational.
Speaker 1:And look, Verdict is a is pretty swayed with me as well. I am also going to go Kingscliff Flying the blues flag. I absolutely love this location, and mainly because it is world-class. That is not an overstatement. It's potentially an understatement without the population.
Speaker 2:Yeah, we were the only people on the beach in fact, when we were down, there of an afternoon and you know you might be lucky to spot a couple of others like kilometers away at the other end of the beach.
Speaker 1:Exactly, look, and we would say make sure you still book, okay, because there are limited sites. There are limited $142 sites, yes, but it doesn't stop people from going.
Speaker 2:In fact, most of the people that we spoke to said to us this is our annual location. We come for a week or two or three. We absolutely love it and we book the same site over and over, so be prepared for that too. If you want to book and get in book well in advance, Don't be like us and leave it to the day before.
Speaker 1:All right, new South Wales, you've come through with flying colours, but certainly Burley Beach. We will revisit there as well. But now it is a quick word from this episode's sponsor, stratus Outdoors, before we get on to my new favorite segment of the beaten chat with Getting Lost Down Under. This podcast is brought to you by our great mates Stratus Out, creators of the toughest and eco-friendly outdoor equipment designed to last a lifetime.
Speaker 2:Oh, I love their camp gear, especially the all-day chairs. They're not only comfy, they are lightweight, super stylish and they're made from recycled materials.
Speaker 1:So good, all right. Their entire range is made for Australia's environment, and the best part is that you are helping protect the environment with every purchase.
Speaker 2:These are people that actually really do care about the environment. And to take advantage of your 10% feel-good discount code with Stratus Outdoors, head over to our website on the gear page. Stratus Outdoors protect the adventure.
Speaker 1:And thank you to this week's episode sponsor. We love them All. Right now, my favourite part of the podcast the new segment of the Beaten Chat.
Speaker 2:Yes, and we're joined by actual, real-life guests this week not just Paul and I chatting to each other. We are actually joined by our first podcast guests for the year. I'm really excited about this chat, paul, me too.
Speaker 1:They have actually become dear friends. Even after we travelled with them for six weeks at the Centre of Australia, they're still mates with us.
Speaker 2:Yes, that's when you know you've got good people right. If you can travel with them for an extended period of time and still like each other at the end of all of that, then they're obviously good eggs.
Speaker 1:Well, here they are. We'll welcome them onto the mics. We've got Anthony and Loretta Cazone, better known as Getting Lost Down Under. Welcome guys.
Speaker 3:Hello, hello, how are we?
Speaker 1:Oh, so good to hear you, guys. We miss you.
Speaker 4:Yes, we miss you, Miss all our antics. We get up to.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I know what you really mean. Is you miss Jasperoo? That's what everyone normally says to us. No, that's good. Whereabouts are you guys at the moment?
Speaker 4:At the moment we're in Hobart, tasmania.
Speaker 2:Oh, stop it Moment. Anybody ever says we're in Tassie. I'm like, oh, I wish we just had a little teleporter machine and we could just transport ourselves there right now.
Speaker 1:It'd be a big one. Yeah, With our rig. But okay, what part of Tassie are you going now?
Speaker 4:The southern side. So we're in Hobart at the moment and spending a bit of time down here before we head up north.
Speaker 1:Okay, Chasing the sun like all the other greying nomads I won't say grey nomads. You guys aren't quite there yet. Now listen, we met, I think a little over four years ago now, at the Queensland Caravan and Camping Super Show and we have remained connected and now friends since then. But how long have you guys actually been out there on the road?
Speaker 4:We've been on the road now for just on two years.
Speaker 1:Okay, congratulations.
Speaker 3:Yeah, travelling full time.
Speaker 1:So yeah, it's awesome and you must be loving it, or you got an end date, or what's the plan.
Speaker 4:No, there is. It's awesome and you must be loving it, or you got an end date or what's the plan? No, there is no end date. We thought that Loretta worked from home for 20 years, so we thought why don't we travel and Loretta can work as well?
Speaker 1:And you're a kept man. I hear Anthony.
Speaker 4:Yes, well, sometimes no mate.
Speaker 3:He likes to pretend he's retired.
Speaker 1:Semi-retired isn't that the word?
Speaker 4:Yeah, that's it, that's it.
Speaker 1:Now, mate, you guys have got an incredible history really, and how we came to meet and get to know you guys better was really through your history as a lifesaver both of you guys and then also as a first aid trainer. Tell us a little bit about that journey.
Speaker 4:Yeah, well, I grew up, I spent most of my years as a teen on the Gold Coast and in a surf club and I got the training bug and I love life-saving. I'm still a current life-saver Both of us are and I love the training that much. I started my own business and love the first day training and that's where it's really blossomed from. And then I ended up working for Surf Life Saving Queensland and I turned my hobby, or my passion, into a job. So I don't know, do you really work a day if you do that?
Speaker 2:Yeah, we absolutely love that and totally agree with you, Ant, and I mean, how blessed are we that we get to do that. And then now, of course, you guys are marrying that passion that you have with being able to travel full-time as well. I mean, it really seems to be the best of all worlds for you.
Speaker 4:Yeah it is. It really is, and we're blessed to be doing this. Like it's not often, you're able to travel the country and see things that you just don't see in everyday life.
Speaker 1:Yeah, that's for sure. And, of course, the people you meet, and that's how we met you guys.
Speaker 4:Yeah, the people you meet are just amazing people that you meet on the road. It's like one big family.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we always talk about the community and how much that has impacted us from our you know previous corporate world lifestyle and now out there being travelling nomads. But what rig are you guys in? What's your setup currently?
Speaker 4:We've got a Holden Colorado it's our tow vehicle, with a few modifications on it and also we've got a 20-foot Leader Gold Caravan.
Speaker 1:Mate, and I have to say big shout out to your Leader, Van, because didn't it do well out there on the Oodnadatta with us.
Speaker 3:Yeah, definitely. Yeah, we put it through its paces on the Oodnadatta, on the Marini Loop, and, yeah, we came out on the other side with only a couple of little scars.
Speaker 1:A little bit of gaff tape.
Speaker 3:It wasn't awesome.
Speaker 2:Yes, you're so good.
Speaker 3:Yeah, we definitely put it through its paces, that's for sure.
Speaker 4:And we absolutely love our caravan. It's our home and we just love it. It's just one of the bands that have been fantastic.
Speaker 2:They almost become a part of your family, don't they? It's just like an additional family member, and you really form this special relationship with your caravan, which, probably, for all of the non-vanners who listen to our podcast, they'd be thinking what is she talking about? I mean, that just sounds crazy, but they really do become a part of your family. Hey, loretta, I've got a question for you. For all the people out there that will be listening, you know, who are thinking well, I'd love to be able to do that one day, but I'm just not sure how I could work full-time and travel full-time, how I could work full-time and travel full-time. How do you manage that? Because I know your work life is extra full. I mean, you have your full-time work and then you also have your own business as well, and then you guys have your travel business too.
Speaker 3:So how do you actually manage your day-to-day? I guess for me, because I did work from home for so long prior to travelling, I was used to that whole remote being independent type of work. But travelling on the roads and working is actually quite easy because you still have the same flexibility as when you're at home. You sort of just make your priorities a little bit different. Like for me, I do a little bit of work in the morning, we might see some stuff or do like add in some travel time around lunch and then I'll go back to work in the afternoon or like yeah, I actually still have a normal full-time job Monday to Friday, but yeah, we're lucky enough to have that flexibility to move around and see the great places that we do.
Speaker 1:And then Ant does all the rest of the chores. Does he the dishes, the cooking?
Speaker 3:Well, he's meant to.
Speaker 1:Mate, but you have an interesting version of this work, play, balance. I think it's fair to say mate's a little more play than work. But, uh, you, you are a, a trainer for first aid. Uh, training everyone from you know queensland police to air force, to the rangers up there in Bamaga in the very top of the Cape. How do you manage that? Do you have to put an ad out, or do people just contact you?
Speaker 4:Look, I think for me I've had the contacts for Surf Life Saving Queensland and they ring me for work and if there are larger jobs, it's pretty easy these days to jump on a plane, fly to where you need to be and then you can go do your work and then fly back to wherever the caravan is. Yeah, I was pretty lucky enough as well that Surf Life Saving Tasmania. They heard that I was coming down here and a bit of word of mouth I suppose and they rang me and asked me to do some work for them as well. So I get to travel as well and we take the van and stay wherever I'm training.
Speaker 1:Yeah, so good, highly sought after you are, anne, and for good reason too, I know We've met some really interesting versions of the work, travel, play, lifestyle for the nomadic dreamers out there, from a lady that we met that was reading tarot cards in a tipi and traveling Australia and that's how she was funding her trip. We have met a guy who had a coffee machine like a proper, you know, full Barista style darling, yeah, yeah, you know, the Italian blend going and it said bean everywhere. And, you know, it's remarkable to us that you really can, if you genuinely want to do this, find a way to do it. And for you, guys, you know, to be able to work full-time, Loretta, and then also have your own bookkeeping business on site, and then for you, Ant, to be able to travel and teach people such a valuable, you know, set of skills around first aid training. Well done, guys, it's awesome.
Speaker 4:Yeah, one of our main priorities as well was connectivity, and what Starlink has done in that space for us is just been amazing as well, and that's really helped us to travel as well.
Speaker 3:Yeah, we wouldn't have been able to go to the places we have if we didn't have, like, internet, basically.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, no, we say it's probably the number one game changer. You know that phrase gets bantered around quite a lot in this industry, but it genuinely is that Starlink and what SpaceX have been able to bring to humanity around the globe. We love that, yeah, yeah. Now we've got to ask you okay, you've been on the road full-time now for two years what would be your dream destination that you maybe haven't been to? Or have you got one? Have you already found the ultimate hideaway?
Speaker 3:Yeah, so far in our travels. I guess my favourite place is definitely Uluru. It's just yeah, it was something that I didn't even have on my bucket list to actually go to. It was just somewhere we were travelling to and when I got there, it's definitely been one of the highlights that I've had in the two years that we've been traveling. Wow, yeah.
Speaker 1:I'm sure we're both nodding here. Absolutely Something special connects with you. What about yourself, Ant?
Speaker 4:Yeah, look for myself, I think that's the most asked. Whenever I talk to someone and they say, oh, you've been traveling for two years, what's your favorite place? And for me it's always really hard to answer, but again it's got to be ill with rude, like it's magical and it's the only way I can explain it to people. Is it's magical, it's spiritual again.
Speaker 2:No woo-woo on us, mate and you fit well in this podcast because we we always go off on our woo-woo tangents and, um, you know, that's just the kind of people we are. But look, we totally agree with you. It is up there on our favorites list as well and it truly is an incredible place everybody should experience once in their lifetime. While we're sticking with the woo-woo stuff, we'd love to ask you guys, what is your best advice, your best travel advice or your best advice that you could give somebody out there listening, who you know maybe is dreaming or thinking. I wonder if I can, you know, do this for myself and my family, or get out there, you know, solo travel. What would you say to really inspire somebody to take the leap to do this?
Speaker 4:Yeah, look, I think the best advice I could give and it's probably the same advice that some good friends gave us was to set a date. And if you want to do it, set a date. And that's something that we knew. We wanted to travel, we didn't know how to get there and then, yeah, we laughed because it was you guys that told us to set a date and we went home, we set a date and it works, yeah.
Speaker 1:Mate, there is nothing more powerful than a deadline.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 1:And the power of the pen. You know it's mightier than a sword for reason. And we, truly, you know we have so many of these stories where in our own journey that we've written down our goal or our intention of our dream to try and sort of plan out to achieve it. So, yeah, good on you guys and thank you.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah. I have this memory etched in my mind, paul, of when we ran into you guys. You know we'd met you at the show and then we, you know, sort of fell out of contact for a little while. And then you know, as it happens, and the universe puts you in the right place at the right time of all places in Townsville, and you know, we just pulled into the very last site at this caravan park.
Speaker 2:Yes, because we were meant to be somewhere else and we decided that that wasn't the place for us to stay. And we came and we scored this last site and we'd not long reversed in and unhitched and down hobbled this guy, you know, with this broken foot.
Speaker 1:And it was you, Anthony, hey you're meant to be teaching first aid, not getting it administered to yourself.
Speaker 2:You were like what's hop along doing, the practical application. And you said to us I just needed to come and say thank you because we set a date and that's what you told us to do and it worked. And I just for us that, honestly, that is the best part of you know. That's why we share our journey with other people, because you know, if it inspires just one person to make a change in their life for the better, then that's also worth it. And then to be able to meet you guys and have you say that, and then for us to form this beautiful friendship that we have now is just just awesome.

Speaker 1:The stars are brighter when the Wi-Fi is weaker.
Speaker 2:I love it. When the Wi-Fi is weaker, I love it. I haven't heard this one. Normally, paulie will run the takeaway past me before we do our podcast, and this one he's kept a surprise. But isn't that true? Yes, you know, when you're not scrolling this way, you can just kick back. In fact, get yourself one of these awesome Stratus chairs that recline and they are the perfect stargazer. Love it.
Speaker 1:All right. Next week we'll be discussing overnight camping ban around many of Australia's secret spots no longer secret, in fact. Overcrowded, problems with wildlife, environment, you name it. We're going to share our thoughts and hopefully you can share yours by getting in touch, but that is next week. In RV News We'll also have a special episode around getting started and that will be live from the Victorian Super Show as well. But for now we'll say dream big, look after yourself and look after your family. Happy Trails Bye.
