Travel Australia Podcast by The Feel Good Family
G’day! We’re Katie, Paul and Jasper Guerin from Queensland’s Gold Coast.
We’ve been traveling full time around Australia as a family for over 5 years in our Toyota Landcruiser 79 series and Zone RV Sojourn off road caravan.
In September 2019 we packed up our lives and hit the road for full time travel around Australia. After a 4 year IVF journey to create our family and long hours spent working our corporate roles we started to wonder if there was a better way. After Jasper was born our perception of what really mattered changed and we realised our most precious commodity was time. We wanted to create more time together as a family, and spend our days sharing experiences and making memories to last a lifetime.
What seemed like a crazy idea at the time set in motion a 2 year plan to pack up our lives, downsize our ‘stuff’ and explore this great country of ours traveling Australia full time in a caravan.
It is the best decision we ever made, and over 5 years and over 180,000km later we are still loving traveling this incredible country and living in our tiny home on wheels.
Each week we produce an episode of our Travel Australia series for our YouTube Channel and free to air television (Channel 31 Melbourne and Channel 44 Adelaide and new in 2025 SKY TV New Zealand), as well as a weekly Podcast that showcases destinations, experiences, RV Industry News and Special Guests that share their journey around Australia!
If you are planning on road tripping Australia, are dreaming of tackling your own ‘Big Lap’ or are just looking for inspiration to get out there on weekends or school holidays, we’d love you to travel with us and experience the best this country has to offer!

WE ARE BACK! - Our Big Update & New Project + HipCamp Hidden Gem
We’re back — and bigger than ever (literally, we built a whole new thing)!
After six months off the airwaves, we’re rolling back in with a major reveal: RV First Aid — the ultimate safety and confidence hub for Australian travellers. From first aid and 4WD recovery to towing, pet care, and mental health on the road, it’s everything you need to travel safer, smarter, and with less stress.
We also share our stay at Riverside Rest, a stunning off-grid Hipcamp on the Clarence River near Yamba. Five private riverfront sites, crackling campfires, sunrise pelicans, and the kind of peace that makes you feel like you'll never want to leave. But at around $50 a night without power, showers, or toilets — is it worth it? We break it down.
Plus, an honest update on Scout, our LandCruiser 300 Series, after 20,000km of towing across sand, dust, and the occasional smashed window. We talk long days, big lessons, and why slowing down can save your sanity (and your suspension).
It feels great to be back — refreshed, recharged, and ready for another epic season of Aussie adventures.

Welcome to the Travel Australia Podcast. We are Paul, Katie, and Jasper from the FeelGood family. Join us as we explore this great country Australia, its people, places, and cultures.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, it's the Travel Australia Podcast where we share the latest in RV industry news, road trip travel, caravanning and camping, product reviews, guest interviews, and so much more. Thanks for joining us.
SPEAKER_00:Yes indeed, this week we are back, baby. Woohoo! After almost six months out in the wilderness, and we're excited to be back on the airwaves, bringing you our travels, adventures, and to also share what inspires us traveling this great country of ours.
SPEAKER_01:Yes, and we have to say thank you to everybody who's reached out over the last few months to say, where are you guys? Are you actually coming back? Will there be another episode? So thank you very much for thinking of us and for missing us, and we have certainly missed you as well.
SPEAKER_00:We have indeed. Now, the elephant in the room is where in the hell have you been? Why you M I A? Why, Katie? What's been going on?
SPEAKER_01:Well, look, we are super excited about this. We we haven't just taken a break because we needed some downtime, although that does sometimes sound particularly good, doesn't it, Paulie? But we have been working on a major project in the background that we really decided needed so much attention to bring it into fruition that something needed to just take a little pause for a minute. And so that's why the podcast has been on pause for this long. And the project that we've been working on is something we're very proud of called RV First Aid. Now, this is the essential safety system every traveler needs.
SPEAKER_00:I love this.
SPEAKER_01:Look, this is a culmination of our six years on the road and learning from being absolutely novices, you know, having never slept in a tent together before we hit the road.
SPEAKER_00:Oh, my dad used to say, when you're green, you're growing.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, absolutely. And look super green. We we are super green and we have continued to grow across this entire journey, you know, learning through experience. And a lot of the times those experiences were were less than ideal and and situations that we didn't know how to handle.
SPEAKER_00:That is true.
SPEAKER_01:Broken ribs, split heads, broken ankles, you know, vehicle. Yes, that's right. Tire blowouts, so many different things. And not just to us, but to fellow travelers as well. And so a few years ago, we had the idea of, you know, what if there was a resource, a one-stop shop somewhere where anybody who's traveling Australia, whether you're solo, you know, grey nomads, a family hitting the road, black packers. That's right. Whether you're in your swag, whether you've got your camper trailer or your rooftop tent, or you're towing a caravan or driving your motorhome around the country, what if there was somewhere that you could go to access every single piece of safety, information, and education at your fingertips anytime you had a question or a scenario arose that you didn't know what to do?
SPEAKER_00:I like to think of it as the knowledge base.
SPEAKER_01:Absolutely. And so this is RV first aid. Now it does incorporate full first aid and skewed towards traveling Australia and the encounters that you may have on the road, particularly when it comes to wildlife and traveling with children and being remote. I mean, really essential, important information, but it doesn't stop there. It's also four-wheel drive recovery. I mean, so many things around four-wheel driving that we didn't know and we even learnt during the putting together of RV First Aid, towing safety, traveling with kids, traveling with pets, pet first aid. This is your essential travel safety hub. And it has launched, it is live now. Yeah. And this is something that we honestly believe every single person traveling Australia needs at their fingertips because it is online and you can access it anywhere, anytime, on your own device, in your pocket, no matter where you are around the country.
SPEAKER_00:Look, in the dream scenario, every registered vehicle RV out there would you know have RV first aid as as part of your registration.
SPEAKER_01:Oh.
SPEAKER_00:Because we do genuinely and passionately believe that, you know, education preparedness, emergency preparedness, just having a little bit of know-how, we felt like we had all the gear and no idea. And that we know we meet people all the time that say the same thing to us. Um so just to be able to have a bit of a knowledge base, to give you the skill sets, and then most importantly, the confidence when it hits the fan. I think that's key to this. Something else in here that I want to mention because it it mattered to me uh earlier on in my career. Uh and and for a lot of people out there and and a lot of men out there is is mental health first aid. There's some great information in there as well around that. And then just net natural health and well-being as well. So look, it it it is comprehensive. There's a lot in there. Uh, every single module, I think, is there's six modules now?
SPEAKER_01:There is seven modules now, and that's continuing to grow with over 60 bite-sized videos that come complete with uh ebooks for each module and all the information that you'll need at your fingertips. And what's really exciting is that we've sourced industry experts specific to each of these fields. So you are hearing from the best of the best around Australia on their respective knowledge bases. And I just want to say too, Paul, for all of our listeners around the globe, if you are thinking of coming to Australia, whether that's, you know, you're packing up and you're moving over here or you're coming for a holiday to travel and experience some of what we talk about in the podcast, this is an absolute must for you because it is so full of all of the information that you will need coming to a foreign country as well to give you that that security and that peace of mind.
SPEAKER_00:Can you tell you that we're excited?
SPEAKER_01:Oh, we're so excited about this, so much so that, you know, we want to offer you an awesome feel-good discount as well to say thank you for your support. Because it's without you guys listening to our podcast, watching our content on YouTube and also on community TV around Australia and New Zealand, we couldn't do what we do as our full-time jobs and lifestyle either. And we're so passionate about sharing that with you. So thank you. What's the deal, Katie? Get to the bottom line here. Well, it's 50% off. I mean, you can't get too much better than that. So using our feel good code, you can have RV first aid for 50% off.
SPEAKER_00:I love it. That's feel good as one word, all caps, F-E-E-L-G-D double D, 50% off from us to you, and you will get more value than you can believe out of this. And we hope that it um absolutely keeps you safe out there on the road.
SPEAKER_01:Most certainly. So jump on to rvfirstaid.com.au. You'll get all the information there, and uh, we'd just love you to stay safe out there on the road.
SPEAKER_00:How good is it to be back on the airwaves? So good. So good. I got it you right, feel good find. Let's talk about this, Katie. This week it's in Yamba, which is northern New South Wales. We have skirted past this place a dozen times in our travels and prior to hitting the road, and we've heard all the greater stories about it as a location, a hidden gem, you know, it's the just God's country by the ocean, all of that. And we've still never been. So we thought, do you know what? Let's actually get down there, see what all the fuss is about. And my oh my Riverside Rest. I tell you what, we we just put up a handful of photos on this property on social media, I think Facebook, Instagram. And there was like 270,000 views and a huge amount of interaction and comments around this property, and for good reason, we're going to talk about it. Now, we did find it on WikiCamps app. That is, we believe, the best money you'll spend in your adventure, other than RV First Aid. And we love WikiCamps. It is the app for knowing where you're going. Let's hear about this place, Katie.
SPEAKER_01:Beautiful. Alrighty. As Polly mentioned, it is called Riverside Rest, located in that stunning Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. I mean, it is God's country. You have that blend of the lush green countryside, and then, of course, that absolutely stunning ocean and coastline there. This particular hip camp property. So, yes, you'll find it on WikiCamps, and then you book through Hip Camp. It is a private property. It has only five campsites, each with their own absolute river frontage.
SPEAKER_00:That is, I think, the key to this place. That is what we loved about it. Absolutely. I don't know, 40 metres away is your closest neighbor.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, it's peaceful. It's private. It's perfect for travellers who are seeking an off-grid getaway, but still want that sensational access to the river, which is the Clarence River there. And this property is located sort of in between Yamba and McLean. So 15 minutes or so to Yamba, and you are looking at some of the most stunning coastline and beaches I think we've ever seen. And I agree. New South Wales is notorious for incredible beaches.
SPEAKER_00:Notorious. That's a good word.
SPEAKER_01:I love that word. And then, of course, if you're feeling like you uh you want a bit of a a country hit, head out to McLean. I did a bit of Highland dancing in my days out in McLean with my kilt.
SPEAKER_00:We want to see the pictures, Katie. Oh. When I met Katie, she talked up this Highland dancing. Highland fling. And I was I I guess I I'd never really heard of it. And I have to say, a few wines in, I said to her, come on, now's the time to show me this Highland Fling, this Highland dance. She said, I can't do it because you need swords.
SPEAKER_01:Yes.
SPEAKER_00:Is that right?
SPEAKER_01:Well, it is one of the dances you do over swords, yes.
SPEAKER_00:I was like, I've got I've got swords. And I ran into the kitchen. I had this little cottage that I was staying at on this little farm on the sunny coast when we both met at Australia Zoo. And I ran in there and I got two butter knives and I said, Start dancing, Maria. And she did. There you go. What a few coronas will do.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, I love it. The the good old days. It was a lifetime ago. Anyway, we are digressing enough about me and a kilt dancing over swords. Let's talk about riverside rest. So, as we mentioned, it is what I would call a boutique. Stay with only five sites there. Now it is 100% off-grid, so you do need to be fully self-contained when it comes to your ability to capture, harness the power of the sun. You do need your own water and you do need your own bathroom facilities. The sites are beautiful, grassy, green with that absolute river frontage on the Clarence River. You can have a campfire. Absolutely love that. And there are fire pits provided.
SPEAKER_00:Every single night. And I I don't know, it doesn't matter to me really what the weather's doing, unless it's pouring with rain. If you're allowed to have a fire, I I I love it. I can't I can't get enough of it. I think it even after six years of full-time camping, you know, if you can call what we do camping, uh, I still have this flood of memories from those really incredible moments with my family when you'd be somewhere and you'd be able to have a campfire. I love the smell of it, I love how it makes me feel. It just transports me back to being, you know, free and easy.
SPEAKER_01:And it's Bush Telly Doll. Yeah, they do call it that, though they look. We were there at the end of the winter season here in Australia, so the days were absolutely stunning. Mid-20s, beautiful sunshine, but ooh, didn't it drop down at night time? So perfect weather for a campfire. Now the fishing, awesome. Not that we caught anything.
SPEAKER_00:Jasper and I. I tell you what, he does have more luck than I. At least he will get something on the hook maybe we can't catch, or it's you know, he's getting a bite. Oh, it's like I don't even have anything like a hook on there sometimes. I don't I don't know.
SPEAKER_01:I wonder if you do. I mean, personally, I quite like the art of fishing, so I don't necessarily need a hook or bait, but I wonder sometimes whether you boys even do have a hook or bait on. Uh look, you can kayak right from camp. The owners have a couple of kayaks there that you can borrow and go out for a paddle. For me, the the wildlife was just an absolute highlight, the abundant bird life, watching those pelicans come in and out off the river of a morning. I even opened the caravan door one morning. It was just before sunrise. And because the river obviously is tidal, we had on our site, which was site number one, and we would say we think this is the best site, even though they're all amazing.
SPEAKER_00:It definitely is the best site.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, I think so too. You can kind of feel a little bit more private, and you seem to have a little bit better access to the water on site one. I opened the caravan door, and there was a huge kangaroo on the little beach front, and I'm talking maybe oh maybe 20 metres away from our van. And he surprised me. I surprised him. We looked at each other and then he just hopped, hopped off, and the sun was rising over the water. It was just so beautiful. Interestingly, pet friendly. How cool is that?
SPEAKER_00:Yeah, it is really cool, and we're meeting more and more travelers now that are opting to travel with their fur babies. Uh, so to find these places, these hidden gems and and know it's pet friendly is great.
SPEAKER_01:Yep, and awesome for the kids. I mean, we hardly saw Jasper. There was another family parked up in one of the other sites. Jasper made great friends. The kids played, they rode their bikes, they kicked the the footy, like it just perfect, safe environment for everybody. And as you said, Paul, only 15 minutes into Yamba, we actually went in on the Sunday and had a great lunch at the pub there on the hill just near the lighthouse. Had a bit of an explore around that coastline, just stunning.
SPEAKER_00:It really is. And to get the drone up and get the view that you can get that bird's eye view, really just adds to the experience of being there, especially when you look at our YouTube show or uh, you know, if you're checking this out on telly or you want to visit our website, thefeelgoodfamily.com, to really get the essence and that perspective of this location. Breathtaking. I love that after lunch we walked around the old lighthouse up on the hilltop and then down to the natural formed pool that's down there that's now been, I guess, supported and man-made into an ocean pool. The water, a little cool for Jasper and I. We were keen, but it was just a little bit chilly. Uh, but yeah, just such an incredible location, and as you say, 15 minutes from our camp. Now, back at the camp, I think the reason why it got so many comments and interaction on that pretty straightforward post that we put up on our socials is that it starts at around$50 a night. Uh, and so we'd love to know what you think about this. I mean, this is a hip camp, it's somebody's private property, uh, you've got, you know, water views, your fire pit, but then the argument, I guess, for people is, well, hang on, there's there's no toilets, there's no showers, there's no power. Uh what what are your thoughts on this, Katie?
SPEAKER_01:What are my thoughts? Okay, I actually think uh, you know, after six years of us trying just about every single type of accommodation from free camping to low-cost budget to caravan parks to, you know, the up there resort style where you sort of just swipe your card and close your eyes and don't look at the balance of your credit card statement. We've tried it all. For me,$50 a night in a location like this was completely reasonable knowing that this was a private property. I mean, this would be a a million multi-million dollar property for the owners to allow people to come and camp on.
SPEAKER_00:It'd have to be three or four million dollar property, yeah.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah. So the fact for me alone that somebody somebody wants to share their patch of paradise with strangers and actually allow you to come and camp on their private property, and then you have a view like that, I'm happy to pay 50 bucks.
SPEAKER_00:And so am I. And look at it is not for everyone. And uh there's a lot of commentary out there at the moment, you know. We've gone mad in Australia. I tell you what, there's over 10,000 free campgrounds out there. So uh or low cost. Uh so it's certainly not for everyone. Uh, but I'm with you. Uh I think the safety and security part it matters to a lot of people, maybe not so much to us. We kind of camp on a gravel pit on the side of the road, to be honest. Uh, if we have to. But it I I think that you have it to yourself almost is a huge part of this. Yeah, it was very peaceful and private. Yeah, private and that access to the water. We just yeah, love it.
SPEAKER_01:Look, interestingly, Paula, we'll just jump here and say like caravan park prices, we have seen a massive increase over the years in that too. So, you know, like I don't know, uh,$50 a night, I don't think is what would be considered expensive anymore these days when you look at the prices of caravan parks. And look, on that coming up in a few weeks' time, we'll be talking about some of the the recent caravan park stays that we've stayed at that, you know, we did close our eyes when we swiped our card.
SPEAKER_00:It's true, it's true. And it all comes down to perspective and what type of traveler you are and what experience you're looking for.
SPEAKER_01:100%.
SPEAKER_00:Righto, let's move on, but send us a comment, let us know what you think. We'd love to hear from you. We have got in RV News uh something exciting, particularly for those of you who live down in Melbourne and Geelong in Victoria, Australia. We are speaking at the Geelong Caravanning and Adventure Leisure Fest. It is uh the 28th to the 30th of November. It's being held at the Geelong Race Course. It's only$15 for adults. Kids are free, you ripper. And uh you can get your tickets online at caravanshow.com.au. We can't wait for this one. It's the first time a show like this is being held in Geelong. It is going to be massive.
SPEAKER_01:I know. I'm so excited. I've never spent any time in Geelong. And so, well, one, I'm really excited to get down there as well, but also to be back speaking at a Caravan Industry Victoria event. They're good mates of ours. We love their shows. So it'll be absolutely fantastic to uh present daily on stage there, and that there's some other fun activities that we're going to be involved in across the show days as well. So if you are anywhere near Geelong at the end of November, then we'd love you to get down to the show. We'll be doing some regular updates on our socials as we get closer to that as well. So you'll know exactly what times and where to find us. Uh, but yeah, please do come and say good day if you're heading into the show.
SPEAKER_00:Come and get a selfie.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah.
SPEAKER_00:Love selfies.
SPEAKER_01:You're getting really good at taking them. I say Pauly's arm, well, in particular, his right arm has probably uh grown a little bit longer than his other arm on our travels over the years because you know he's always the one that I'm like, I just I can't get the phone out far enough away from us to get a selfie of us as a family, whereas Paul's just got that little bit of extra length.
SPEAKER_00:Oh my gosh, we love this conversation. Now, what else has been going on? Okay, we in five months have had gosh, we're coming up to almost 20,000 kilometres in Scout, our Land Cruiser 300 series, and a lot of questions going, well, how's the vehicle performing? How's it towing? You haven't cooked the engine, uh, you know, is it is it doing what you hoped it would do? So let me try and just give you an update there. We went to Gari, Fraser Island. Yes. That was like our shakedown trip, wasn't it? Incredible. And that was without the van. And we completely felt sick for a minute there because the vehicle's covered in sand. I mean inside and out.
SPEAKER_01:We went from like picking up a brand new vehicle, like that, you know, feeling of when you drive out of a showroom and it's just like squeaky clean. Yeah. And then literally 12 hours later, it was full of sand inside and out. I was like, that was tears. I was like, oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_00:What are we doing? But you know, this is what they're made for. You know, if you're gonna get these vehicles and use them.
SPEAKER_01:And didn't it perform? It was amazing over there.
SPEAKER_00:Incredible. The weather was perfect. And again, check out the YouTube channel there for for all of those episodes. We then had headed out west. Yes. To Birdsville for the big red mini bash.
SPEAKER_01:Yes. And it was covered in dust. Oh my goodness, from sand to dust and dirt.
SPEAKER_00:Oh my gosh, it was adventure field out there, four weeks. Uh, there's a half a dozen episodes around what we got up to, from camel races to pig races to jook races to Katie's interview with the iconic John Williamson.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, I loved every every minute of that trip and and an absolute highlight for me personally in my life to sit down with JW and have a chat like we were, you know, old mates and just he's just delightful and reminded me so much of my own father, you know, in so many ways, and just to, you know, give him a hug at the end and say thank you. It was just it was absolutely sensational. And then to sit on top of Big Red and and listen to him perform what potentially is, you know, one of his very last public performances. I mean, just wow.
SPEAKER_00:That is uh yeah, a special memory for us as a family and for the thousand people. It was a very limited amount of people that were able to have access to that. Uh in fact, it he sold out the first concert, and so they put on a second night, you know, one not more night.
SPEAKER_01:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00:It's like John Farnham's one more. Eternal tour. Yeah, lots of so there was another thousand people, and we went to both concerts.
SPEAKER_01:Amazing. So, so grateful for that experience. And again, I mean, talking about Scout, like just incredible out there. First time in this combination towing out in these parts of outback Queensland. I mean, the the furthest southwest reaches that you can get to. Incredible.
SPEAKER_00:We loved it. We loved the artesian bath. Uh that was amazing. Poor little Jasper, you actually just heard coughing in the background. He got sick out there. We we had an uh an outback ambulance arrival. Uh we smashed the rear window on the 300 series. Sorry, scout. Oh my gosh. Uh look, we definitely had an adventure field uh shakedown out west. And and again, yeah, you can check all of that out on YouTube on our website, but it was awesome. So as far as the vehicle is going, towing, incredible. Uh the comfort of the vehicle. The longest travel day we did was 680 kilometers. Uh that's probably our second longest travel day we've ever done. And the only reason why we did that, because we've reduced our kilometers. You know, we normally do 400 max, 300's perfect. Anything under 300 is a gift. You know, this sort of half travel days, we love that now that we've been going this long. But smashing the rear window and holding it together with gaff tape, I had to do the extra kilometres, you know, two days in one, uh, in order for us to get to the windscreen repair guy. So look, it it was amazing to feel that comfortable. The towing feels seamless. It's amazing. And no temperature problems, no engine problems. Everything is running schmick.
SPEAKER_01:Love it.
SPEAKER_00:Now, a takeaway for this week I love this. Leave footprints, but not regrets.
SPEAKER_01:Oh, I haven't heard that one before, and I really, really love that, Paulie. And gosh, isn't it true? I mean, really, there's a a theme across the people that we meet on the road, and it seems to be when we get chatting to people, they give us one of two regrets. The first one would be we just wish we did this sooner. The second one would be, we wish we did this with our kids when they were little.
SPEAKER_00:Yeah. I know you hear it all the time on this show. You only get 18 summers with your kids. Gotta make the most of it. And uh, we always like to say personally that the time you invest in your kids now is the the time that they're going to remember best and invest in you later.
SPEAKER_01:Absolutely. And just doing what you can. I mean, obviously not everybody can pack their lives up into a caravan and and set off into the sunset for who knows how many years. But you know, if you can't travel regularly, then get out on your weekends or do whatever you can to get your kids off the screens and out into nature with you as a family.
SPEAKER_00:It's perfect. More green, less screen, Jasper. That's what we say. All right, next week we're sharing our new favourite feel good farm states, less than three hours from Brisbane. Uh, so if you're on the sunny coast or the Gold Coast or in that region in southeast Queensland, we think this is gonna be a regular for you, your family, and your friends to go and camp. Oh, absolutely. We absolutely love this place. Can't wait to share that. Plus, we're gonna have some special guests on the show. They are YouTubers, YouTube sensations. Ooh, interesting. Yes, pretty pretty exciting. All right, for now we'll stay dream beak, look after yourself and look after your family and travel safe.
