109 – Have you ever wondered why did Jesus need to pray?

He was Jesus after all, right?

Recently I came across the verse in Mark 1:35 that says Jesus got up while it was still dark and went off to pray in a quiet solitary place.

I totally get that. He wanted some peace and quiet to commune with his heavenly Father. That's what prayer was all about for Jesus, communicating with God.

So why did Jesus need to pray?

In this week's episode, I look at several reasons Jesus felt the need to pray.

  • He had to follow his own teaching to turn to the Father for everything we need
  • He needed to talk to God to find out what he needed to do
  • Sometimes Jesus felt the need for God's help and strengthening
  • He needed to pray for others, because they needed Jesus's support
  • He prayed for himself before the crucifixion to affirm his relationship with the Father
  • He prayed to set an example for us so we would know how to pray with the same authority he prayed with

To Jesus, prayer was living, moving, breathing in God’s presence, communing with the Father at every moment and in every situation.

Prayer was a way of thinking, a way of seeing and hearing God, being in conscious relationship with God.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on how you would answer the question: Why did Jesus need to pray?
