Solving Life's Next Chapter Podcast - Cutting Edge Information for Your Powerful Senior Years
Remember college shopping with your kids to find the best school for them?
Or, the other milestone of getting married and you had to find the place for your wedding and all the accoutrements?
Navigating the unknown is tricky, at first. So knowing the issues and milestones as you age and how to make good choices to address them for your aging parents or even for yourself is critical.
Have you shared how you want you want your golden years to look with your family? Does your family know what you want to happen when you are no longer here?
Do they know your wishes about your health care so they can help you in the best way possible if you are unable to tell them when that time comes?
What about your plans for living when you can no longer live alone?
Knowing these personal choices and the answers to these questions is a guessing game. Plus, just like paying for your dream wedding was a concern, so is paying for in-home help as you age. And moving to a home that offers assistance on the campus such as an assisted living community can also be pricy. What's involved in downsizing to a smaller home so that you can liquidate some equity to help pay for future services, such as caregivers? Or what kind of plan is needed to manage daily life if a family member receives a dementia diagnosis?
Did you know there are dozens of ways to answer these questions? There are!
But, which are YOUR best answers? Few of us ever thinks about managing aging issues, but the truth is, it happens to every person in every walk of life, every single day. There are 60,000 baby boomers turning 65 EVERY SINGLE DAY.
Listen to our Solving Life's Next Chapter Podcast and get to know me and my vetted, friendly guests who have answers we all need and ideas we can weigh as we age or as we help our parents age.

Successful Aging Conference: The Roadmap Edition
In today's Podcast, "Solving Life's Next Chapter," we talk with Elaine Poker-Yount, director of Successful Aging Senior Conferences. Eliane has long been known as a valley expert contributor on aging and senior matters. Besides her sought-after classes and talks, Elaine's training, articles, and work as Visiting Angles of Mesa's Director of Care Management has positioned her as a resource beyond the greater Phoenix.
In this podcast, Elaine estimates that fifty percent of the people who call for care of an aging person is adult children. What’s more is, in the last two years, most calls are crisis-driven. This means that an event—likely a health event or fall—drives the search for more services. Sadly, Elaine explains that this is a shame because often if additional care is introduced sooner than later, crises such as these can be averted.
Most people do not consider themselves caregivers, they see themselves as loved ones. And, the questions asked are not always the correct ones. When Visiting Angels meet with family members, questions are asked that allow a good look at the person’s health, wellness, finances, and circle of influence. All these factors play into what services are needed most and when.
Elaine also explains that making decisions for loved ones when they have no idea what is wanted, it can be tricky. She urges families to have these conversations before they are crucial.
Having conversations about care: How do you do this?
How do you want things to happen? Children are urged to approach their parents and explain that as children, the parents taught them good planning skills. When they can approach the parent with an empowering tone, the parents’ desires and boundaries are now out in the open. Elaine explains some of the strategies for starting these often-dicey conversations with finesse and respect.
Elaine Poker Yount announced the next Successful Aging Conference: Roadmap Edition is coming up on Saturday, September 28, beginning with vendor visits at 8:45 am. Five professional speakers, including Elaine Poker Yount, will deliver education throughout the day until 3 pm. Lunch is offered, free of charge, and registration is free and is required by visiting Eventbrite.
