Here
Convenience Store Temptations
Captainwe are. Nice and bubbly.
WilsonBubbly.
CaptainOkay. So how's it going?
WilsonIt's going pretty good. Um got some water. It's delicious.
CaptainYou know, I did, I don't know if you saw okay. I haven't had one of these in like literally since high school. I used to chug these in high school. Probably not good for you. Um, but these naked drinks.
WilsonOoh, okay, yeah.
CaptainBruh. So I live, um, probably like this is such a sleeper part of the house we bought, but there's a Rofo, a Royal Farms, uh I don't know, a hundred steps away. Bruh. And it's open 24-7. Bruh. Okay. It's uh, yeah, it's been some may call it an issue. Some may call it a blessing.
WilsonAre you just like pounding naked drinks over there? No, no, no, no.
CaptainThis was the first naked I had, but uh, we have gone over there and done the um blender machine. What's that called that we used to go to in college?
WilsonWhere you could you put the drink in and uh was that free like that? I want to say for real, but that's like for real pets, like the toy. Um something like uh freezy um make your own. I Googled it. Oh, it is for real. It's F apostrophe real. Yeah.
CaptainYes, that's what it is.
WilsonOkay, yes.
CaptainYeah, we've done one of those. A little of this, a little of that. Um yeah, it some may call it a blessing. Might be a problem. This is the first naked I had, but I was like, dang.
WilsonI haven't had one of those in a long time, but there I did have a short stint right after college that I had.
CaptainYeah. Unless, do you remember me drinking these in college? I thought it was high school.
WilsonI don't think I remember that.
CaptainYeah. They have one that's mango, of course, but then Rofo didn't have that, but the mango ones are the best.
WilsonI think I liked some kind of blueberry thing and I hated the green machine.
CaptainOh yeah. Green machine's nasty as hell, bro.
WilsonIt's like wet grass.
CaptainYeah. It's like I if I'm gonna be healthy, let me go like eat a salad. I'm not gonna just drink this. It's disgusting. Um yeah, it is really nice.
WilsonUm Yeah, we have a coffee shop that's like 50 steps away. Oh and they post every day they post on their Instagram story like this sweet treat that they have that day. I mean, it's only open until three, but that's fine.
CaptainI mean, I'd be there. That's nice. We um there's a restaurant really close by we haven't gone to yet that I kind of want to check out. Um it's kind of like more sports bar-y, so I I don't know if it's really quite the vibe I'm looking for, but it is it does seem very popular. There's like people there often.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainLike I think they're like pretty crowded, like every every baseball game and I guess football games when those started back up. Um it's like, yeah, that's like the whole vibe of the place. And then there's a few restaurants that we've been to already, but now that we're we're closer to them, so we've given them like more of our time. But yeah, I don't know. The rofo's been I I I guess I expected us to be going there. I just wasn't expecting how often we'd go there. I mean, it's a convenience store, so it's like nice to just be able to like walk there. Yeah. It's like the best part of like living in a city is like, oh, I can just like wal leave my house really quick and go do something.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm anyway.
Neighbors And The Slappy Doll
CaptainOh, I meant to ask you. I mean, you can cut this if you want to, but like have you talked to any of your neighbors?
WilsonUm, I haven't, but Finn has met met two of them yesterday. I think it was yesterday. Oh, okay. But they seem really nice. Yeah. This neighborhood's really like punk-y, but like there's a mix of just like non-punk people too that are equally as friendly.
CaptainPunk sounds fun.
WilsonYeah. Uh, did you meet your neighbor that has Slappy in the No.
CaptainActually, I saw them the other day, and uh, but they were they were in the middle of a conversation with somebody else. But I was like, I'm so curious. Yeah, so for the podcast, yeah. So they have a identical replica doll of Slappy that is inside of their bay window, like at their front living area, facing out for the world to see. And I I'm so curious as to like I have never like you can like goosebumps, but like a replica Slappy doll. I'm like, Wh why? What? I have so many questions. Um and I just had to send it to you, and I I had like I've seen it and I finally was like, okay, let me get all the way up there so I can like take a good photo.
WilsonI used to have a ventral castal.
CaptainI mean I didn't have Slappy, but I mean that's like one of the scariest goosebumps stories.
WilsonOh yeah, it's the best.
CaptainSo but yeah, they're like directly across the street. I've only met my neighbors that live on this side, so I'll have to have to do more um community stuff, I guess.
WilsonDid you go out of your way to meet them or like no?
CaptainActually, they saw that we were moving in and they were very excited that someone was moving in here because this apparently the previous history of this house was like someone nasty was living here. Yeah. So I mean they gutted the whole place and everything's brand new, but the old pictures look like the house was not taken care of, and I don't know, no one's giving me specifics at what was happening here, but they said like there was some problems. Like I I I one neighbor mentioned there's like one of those um like city um surveillance cameras that are up in one of the corners, and they were like, that got put up because of the person that used to live in this house. I said, what does that mean? It's like what what is that? I I don't know.
WilsonNow I'm intrigued. Yeah.
CaptainNow I mean I guess I could look. I still get mail from previous people that used to live here. And some of it's serious mail, like jury duty summons. I'm like, I don't know what to do with this. Like I I'm like for all I know, that person's in jail. Like, I don't I mean, yeah. I have no idea. But now you made me, yeah, maybe I should case search some of the names.
WilsonYeah, but it could also be something where like maybe you don't want to know. I don't know.
CaptainNo, true, true, true, true. Yeah. I know that one point they had a there was a child that lived here because I get mail about like a pediatrician. So maybe I don't want to know, actually. Maybe you're right. Um but anyway, they were very excited that like normal people are moving in.
WilsonSo good.
CaptainAnd I I whenever I see them on the street, they always say hi and they remember our name, so that's good.
WilsonOh, that's nice. Okay.
CaptainYeah. And I mean I remember their names too, but yeah, it's nice that they like actually pay attention. So um anyway. I don't know why we were talking about that. Um, I have one thing I was gonna intro discuss.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainDiscusshaw.
Netflix Horror Tangent And Rant
CaptainSo um we watched something very bad is gonna happen on Netflix that just uh premiered in late March. Um and it's I think it's um from the Duffer brothers that did Stranger Things.
WilsonOh, right, okay.
CaptainYeah, um it's so good, dude. So good. Yes. And I mentioned it to you because I wanted you to watch it so we could maybe discuss. But yeah, it has um in it has well the critic scores in 87. I'm surprised the audience scores a little on the like in the 60s, but I really liked this show. Um, but yeah, it's basically like um I don't know, it has this very like ominous atmosphere the whole time. And it has um the woman from the Annihilation movie.
WilsonOh, Jennifer Jason Lee, I see.
CaptainYeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Um and then I don't know if you did you ever watch that show that people were marketing as like the new the modern version of Friends? I can't remember what that's called.
WilsonI can only think of how I met your mother. I don't know.
CaptainNo, no, no. Um what was that called? Um Overcompensating. I don't know. They're marketing it as like a modern version of Friends. It came out last year. Um but the Nikki in this show, Adam DiMarco, I I he's in that show. That I think that's where I recognize him from. Oh no, he was also in White Lotus.
WilsonYeah, but I I mean it wasn't overcompensating.
CaptainYeah, he's like one of the main characters and over overcompensating. Um but yeah, the show's like I mean, honestly, we were watching it and we were like, are the Duffer brothers like redeemed for that ending? Like, like, like they I think I mean they were cooking a little. I'm like kind of surprised. Okay, liked it.
WilsonI did I need to watch it. There's just so much to watch. I'm so behind on shows.
CaptainBut this is a quick open and shut situation. Yeah. Like you don't have to, you know, here's season two in like a year and a half, nothing like that. This is like a a full story.
WilsonOh, okay. Yeah. I wonder if we'll do like an anthology type thing, though.
CaptainLike Yeah. They guess they could. Um I actually I would be down for that. But like in the same universe. Um, but yeah, no, this is I I would really yeah, it's like an ominous, um, there's like certain horror um atmosphere um leading up to like a a wedding that this young couple's having. They're like doing it in the husband's, the fiance's family's like old cottage. Um and like some creepy stuff starts happening.
WilsonI'm sure I'd really like it.
CaptainI think you would. Actually, like we were watching it and we were like actually a little spooked out. So it was good. I I I don't know if the Deffer brothers like gave up on the Stranger Things ending because they were working on this, and I was like, okay, well, okay. Alright. I kind of get it, but um, no, I really liked it, and I would definitely recommend. Are the Deafer Brothers working on there's some other Stranger Things coming out? Something that's like their prequel to everything, right? Or something?
WilsonI think, but and they also released this like cartoon that I actually heard isn't that good.
CaptainYeah, I don't want to watch that. A Stranger Things cartoon?
WilsonYeah, people are annoyed because it's the kids from the Stranger Th from Stranger Things, but it takes place like I guess between seasons, like at some point, and they're like this would have been so much better if you picked other kids in that town, and also like I guess there are plot points in this cartoon show that it's like it makes no sense that something this big that I guess happens in the cartoon would not have been mentioned in the show.
CaptainOh, it's just like advertised. Oh, Tales from 85, that's the animated one.
WilsonThat sounds right, yeah.
CaptainEw, I hate this animation. Ew. Why do they look like that?
WilsonYeah. Is this on Netflix? Apparently, yeah. People are just saying like Netflix wanted a way to keep up um like with these kids as long as they want and not have to worry about the actors aging out.
CaptainYeah, I hate every aspect of what you just said. Yeah. Um, and I hate this animation. Like I I I'm guessing these people aren't even voicing those kids in the animation. Ugh. Talk about AI slub.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainI just don't like it at all. Um, okay. Well, you should watch something very bad's going to happen.
WilsonFine. You talked me into it.
CaptainPerfect.
WilsonUh do you want to bring us in?
CaptainYes.
Welcome And Movie Setup
CaptainSorry. Yes. Um, okay, so uh where are we here? Baba. Um okay, welcome to the 191st episode of the Red Rome Podcast, where we review horror movies while enjoying Adult Beverage or 2. And I'm Captain.
WilsonAnd I'm Wilson.
CaptainAnd this week we're reviewing the 1987 Canadian Supernatur oh gosh, supernatural slasher film. Hello, Mary Lou. Prom Night 2 from 1987. Now, I do fully agree with you that this truly is a fever dream movie. Like, that is an incredible description of this movie. Um, but yeah, so it was directed by Bruce Pittman, who's known for this movie.
WilsonOkay. Thank you.
CaptainUm it was written, I know, it was written by Ron Oliver, who directed several several episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark and Goosebumps? Oh wow, that's a weird goosebumps coincidence. Um and then he also cast Oh, he was the person that cast Ryan Gosling in a Goosebumps episode, I guess.
WilsonUm yeah, do you know the one with the camera that like takes a picture like and like steals their souls or something?
CaptainYeah. Yeah. I do know that. I know exactly what you're talking about. And then he also did 34 Hallmark channel movies.
WilsonJesus. Okay.
CaptainIf that tells you anything.
WilsonUm it does a little bit.
CaptainI I I was wondering, I didn't look it up. I I don't even know you could look this up, but you know how Netflix like contracts people to stay on for like three years or five years or something? I was like, did he have some like crazy like 30 movie contract with the Hallmark channel? Have you watched those movies before? They're not bad, but they're not good.
WilsonLike any Hallmark movie?
CaptainYeah. They're not good, but they're not. They're like a certain vibe that you have to be in the mood for.
WilsonI mean, I watch like around Christmas time, I'll generally watch at least one really cheesy Hallmarky one, and then like the classic, you know.
CaptainYeah, I mean, I wouldn't go like out of my way to watch them unless it was the vibe, but 34 is a lot. That's a lot. I don't know if I'd ever watch that many, let alone write them. Um, and then when it comes to cast, so um we have Michael Ironside who plays Billy. He also is um or no, he plays the adult version. Yeah, the principal version of Billy. Um so he's known for being in Space Hunter, Adventures in the Forbidden Zone, and then he was also in Top Gun, Total Recall, Starship Troopers. Oh, he's in that down movie we did, which I wanted to make sure we did that one, so I already looked, but it's episode 127. Um, oh, and we did Stillborn, and he's in that one at 137. I don't remember that movie at all.
WilsonI don't really like vaguely. I remember Down, but he's but this actor's like, he's in a ton of like classic 80s, 90s movies.
CaptainYeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, Top Gun, Total Recall, and Starship Troopers are like very famous movies that's in. Um you would recognize him if you saw them, I think. And then we have Wendy Lyon as Vicky Carpenter, so she's the mostly the main character in this movie. Um she this was her film debut, and then more recently she was in supporting parts in some thriller called Regression, and she's in The Shape of Water, which I never watched the movie because it it's giving bestiality.
WilsonIt was really good though.
CaptainI just cannot, I can't get behind it. I so I mean it just grosses me out. I'm like, it it is an amphibian human story.
WilsonYeah, you should watch it.
CaptainDo you recognize her from Shape of Water? Like was her role small or I don't remember.
WilsonI haven't seen Shape of Water since what, like 2017 or whatever, when it came out? When it came out, okay.
CaptainUm and then we have Justin Lewis who plays Craig. Um Craig is Vicky's boyfriend in this movie, but it's also Billy's son. And he's known for his role in Stargate Universe as Colonel Everett Young, and he was also an FBI director in Missing. Is that a TV show? I guess.
WilsonIt sounds like one.
CaptainUm he was in the Saw movies, so Saw 4 and 5 and Saw 3D. Uh and he's in uh season five of Breaking Bad as Declan. That sounds familiar.
WilsonHe was um I can like picture the scenes, but I don't I don't know how to describe it. That would be helpful at all.
CaptainThat's fine. Um, and then we have a priest in the movie, Fa uh, I always do this. Richard Monette plays father Buddy Cooper. He's best known for his 14 season tenure as the longest serving artistic director at Stan Stratford Festival of Canada. What the fuck is that? I would never recognize that man. So um and then Mary Lou Maloney, who is played by Lisa Scarge. Um, but she's mostly known for this. She's really pretty, actually. She's really pretty. Like I'm surprised she's not in other things.
WilsonWell, it looks like she retired from acting in the 90s.
CaptainOh. And then I mean, do what you love, I guess. Or don't do what you don't love. Um, and then we have Terry Hawk Hawkes who plays Kelly Hennin Lauder. They never gave that girl a last name. Like we're not gonna put that in here. Um but Kelly is one of her friends, one of um Vicky's friends in the movie, and she is the second English dub voice actress for the titular character uh of Japanese anime Sailor Moon. So I guess there was an original dub because Sailor Moon's been on for fucking ever.
WilsonUm Yeah, I never got into that, but Oh, that's zero in there, supposed to be a dash.
CaptainBut yeah, she was the uh voice actor for Sailor Moon from 95 to 98.
WilsonGood for her.
CaptainI mean, I've seen episodes of Sailor Moon. I couldn't tell you any of the major plot points besides she fights don't they just like spin a bunch?
WilsonI feel like most of that shows them turning into the their characters.
CaptainI'm assuming she's like uh is a good person fighting bad people, right?
WilsonI think that's a fair assumption.
CaptainI would assume. Um I don't know, so every time I think about Sailor Moon, I think about other anime I watched when I was really, really tiny. And um my favorite one was Ham Taro.
WilsonHam Taro was good.
CaptainIt's so good. I feel like I should watch some more of that. I haven't watched that since I was, yeah, like in elementary school, but um great show. How many seasons of that? Sorry. How many seasons of that was there?
WilsonThere were a lot of like shows around that time period on like Nickelodeon Cartoon Network. I'm like, were they only just like one season?
CaptainI have no idea. When you watch it as a kid, you're like, you don't know what you're because it's just like whatever streams, damn, there are 300 episodes of this of Ham Taro. This show looks so good, dude. I'm gonna watch, I'm gonna watch it like this. This looks so good. Um Little Ham Hams and their adventures. Um, okay. So anyway, anyway. Um,
1957 Prom Fire Backstory
Captainso this is um a movie. It's so it starts in 1957. Sorry. Leave me alone. Um in 1957, there's a high school prom and um so you kind of get this story. The movie starts out with like a chest in some old attic that's like shaking or creaking. Um I'm not really it's basically like opening you up to like the story from a while ago because this is present time is not 1957. This is like 30 years in the past. So you like I guess zoom into the chest or whatever. It gives you the story. But there's a girl um that um is I think it started out with Mary Lou giving confession. Actually, um, and it's she's giving confession at this church, but she's giving like a prank confession, and then she like says something shocking at the end to like shock the father about how she's like not repentant for it or ever, and while this is going on, you see that she's like doing something, and then it like uh pans out, and she's writing inside the confessional stall for a good time called Mary Lou in lipstick, which is like so funny. Uh that scene. Um, and then it's prom night, so she's like, you know, at senior prom, her boyfriend's Billy, but um, she doesn't really care much about staying faithful to Billy. Like she's known as like being kind of promiscuous, so she's like making out with some rando in the back of the movie of the the behind the bleachers or something. Um and um this infuriates Billy. Um and it says when she just reveals that she was using him, but I don't know what she'd be using him for. I thought she just didn't really care much about him. Anyway, Mary Lou then wins prom queen, and she um she has like a very uh I don't know, big personality. So I don't know, she just like everything kind of rolls off her. Like Billy's pissed at her, but like she just kind of was like, whatever. See you later, alligator, I guess is her catchphrase. Anyway, she wins prom queen and she's like waiting them for them to put the her crown on. They were put trying to get her cape on and then she was like, leave it, which I'm only mentioning because it comes up later on in the movie, but she was like, just put my crown on. And while she's trying to get the while she's waiting to get her crown on, her boyfriend from the rafters drops a prank stink bomb down on her that somebody else had prepared for to you know mess up senior prom. But it's lit on fire, and when he throws it, it catches the bottom of her dress and she lights on fire and dies.
WilsonUm and yeah, like everyone at prom just watches her go up and focus on.
CaptainIt is I was like, is this 1957 behavior? Like, what is going on? Like everyone's just standing there. No one's screaming, no one's running, no one's calling for help. Billy uh does scream to call for help. He was not trying to kill her, um, but he did. Um, but yeah, it's like it's so weird to have them all just stand there and watch. Um and while she's dying, she does get to see who the culprit is. She turns around while she's on in in flames and sees that Billy's the one that that killed her. So anyway, um 30 years later, we have Vicky who is um also going to her senior prom soon. Um and she's dating her boyfriend Craig, who's um driving a motorcycle, so her like mom doesn't really like him. Her mom's like super religious. Um, and then we find out that Billy is a principal. Now, if I killed somebody at a high school, I'm definitely not working there. No.
WilsonAnd also who's I mean, maybe after all that time people forgot, but how do you just like decide to go work at the school and everyone's like, oh yeah, your criminal history's fine. You didn't set anyone on fire.
CaptainI'm guessing he didn't go to jail. Like Mary Lou saw who did it, but I don't know that everybody saw who did it. So I'm guessing he didn't get blamed or caught. I'm guessing. Like I'm guessing it was just seen as an accident. I I'm not really sure, but they're not giving anything like you know, about him that it seems like he came got out of prison or something. So I didn't think he ever got caught, but I don't know why the butt you'd work there if you killed somebody there. Um he even has their fucking picture, their senior pictures like in his office. I'm like Sir, you killed somebody here in this photo. Anyway. Um so um they're they're doing like you know, high school stuff. Like hey, his son mentions he doesn't want to go to college and his dad's like forcing him. Vicky also is like trying to look for a prom dress. Um as she is because her parents don't want her mom doesn't want to pay for a big prom dress, they go through the costume department stuff from like old theater productions and finds um Mary Lou's cape that she never wore. Um, but I guess like messing with Mary Lou's stuff or opening that that old chest like released her spirit, right? That's what I'm getting.
WilsonYeah. Somehow she got trapped in there.
CaptainYeah. Um and while her spirit comes out, like uh basically things start happening pretty quickly. So like um the picture in the principal's office like shatters, and then the shatter initiates like right on Mary Lou's face. Um, and then um one of her friends that I guess was trying to help her recut this old prom cape into a dress, like uh looks like she committed suicide, but she just the costumes, like spirit wiggle her around and then hang her. I don't know. It was like paper, it was like paper mache pieces and like loose fabric that was like cutting her and like swinging her around and then like wraps itself around her neck and then you know what I mean? Like it's you don't actually see anything else besides art supplies killing her. Um also the friend was like in a really bad mood. Um, and Mary Lou was like tr or not Mary Lou, Vicky was trying to like help her get to the bottom of it, and I don't know what that was. Was she pregnant?
WilsonI honestly don't know.
CaptainBecause okay, so they tease that she had a doctor's appointment, and Vicky asks her, like, everything good? And she says, Yeah, it's just my my routine checkup. And then the next day she's like really sad and like prom stupid, I don't have to go, I shouldn't go anyway. And I was like, Oh, is that means like you're going through something? And then she gets really sad about this boy that um doesn't want to be with her anymore. And I was like, why'd they tease the doctor's appointment if that has nothing to do with it? I I don't know. She doesn't say anything, but anyway, she basically gets killed right after. I don't I don't know. I don't know. It is very fever dreamy, so it's just like go with the flow kind of thing. Um but it does look like suicide. So um also Vicky has like an arch nemesis in school. What's her name? What was that girl's name?
WilsonUm, I'm looking because I don't remember.
CaptainOh, that's Kelly. Oh I think. The other friend is Monica.
WilsonUm, I can't keep up with these names.
CaptainUm, yeah, Kelly is her arch nemesis in school. Kelly's a fucking bitch, dude. After uh her friend dies, so they're all competing for prom queen, and Kelly literally says the competition is dwindling, and she said she's like saying this in front of Vicky and Vicky and her friend, and she's like, you two should take the hint and basically saying like you should kill yourself or like drop out of. I'm like, girl, what?
WilsonI hope there aren't actually how high schoolers who are like so tangled. I don't know.
CaptainVicki literally says, shut your fucking mouth, bitch, which is great. Like that's literally verbatim what she says. Um, but Vicky's also getting weird visions now of like bugs and like rundown school. Um like she's she even gets like this weird like spirit person assaulting her. Um she starts to like feel Mary Lou inside her basically.
Possession Starts And Kills Escalate
CaptainUm and then it comes to like a full uh changeover when Kelly basically yeets a volleyball at Vicky's head like at full force and it makes her puts her into like a concussion. Um and while she's like goes into a concussion, she is like yelling Mary Lou or like I'm Mary Lou or something like that. And the principal Billy hears her yelling this and is freaked out, like he's like fully sure that Mary Lou's spirit has come back out. Um and this is when we have that disgusting rocking horse scene later that night. Again, you should have warned me. Because we get full tonguage and I and it's wet and it's gross. What's that mention of the tongue?
WilsonThat was um like uh Nightmare on Elm Street like two or something. Two? Yeah. I forget, yeah, but um I don't know. We need like a themed month of just like wet tongues.
CaptainI cannot. This already took me out. I I literally had to send you a photo. I was like, this deserved a trigger. This really deserved a trigger. It was so nasty. They did a lot of work, I feel like, with the special effects of moving that like rocking horse around. Like its ears wiggle, his eyes move, it like grimaces and grins. Um I feel like that would take a lot of effort to like do that in 1987. Um, but yeah, I guess Mary Lou's like in the horse, and then it like her spirit gets in Vicky at the same time. Um and I guess since after that scene, she like Mary Lou basically is just in Vicky. Um so um I think what we see during this time we also see that Bill is talking to the the priest Scott, and Scott basically like after they decide the spirit is out, Scott's like, all right, Bill, like you're gonna be fucking killed because like I'm a priest, like I'm protected from spirits, but like she's gonna come for you. Like, because I think Scott was the one that made this tink bomb, right? So he initially he was gonna put it out to ruin prom, but then he I think Bill stole it and actually killed Mary Lou. So they both feel guilt. Um but yeah, so um he's like, you know, you're in trouble. Um, but Bill doesn't, you know, Bill doesn't want to believe him. Um and he's like, I don't need protection for something that happened 30 years ago. Um and then it cuts back to Vicky and she's just doing all these crazy things. She's like she like slapped Kelly at one point when she said something ridiculous again, which Vicky would never do. Um Vicky also or like yeah, Vicky in Mary Lou inside Vicky also, I think, um, goes to confession again and then she kills Scott through the confessional wall, like breaks through breaks through it and uh kills him. Um which I don't know. Uh the scene's ridiculous, but it almost doesn't seem that ridiculous based on the rest of the movie. I I don't know how else to describe that, but like the whole movie just seems so wild that like it doesn't even seem like a big kill, really.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm And then I think they what they make their way to Oh, Vicky also does that really Mary Lou also does that really weird fr thing with her friend where she like approaches her naked in the shower and like chases her around. That whole scene is super weird. I hate it.
WilsonI mean it's like an 80s movie, so they needed to have like Yeah, it's giving characters women, like that's just yes. There was a lot of like this movie has a lot of weird parallels.
CaptainYeah, but like I you know, I mean it's 1987, but like I you know men wrote this because I can't explain to you how much running around naked and like kissing each other is not something that happens in female locker rooms. Like I remember when it they have that in the Carrie movie, and I was like, I just couldn't help myself, like rolling my eyes. I'm like, why are there 30 fully naked women just all showering like butt to vagina? Like everybody is like literally like touching in the shower. I'm like, this does not, that is not. Have you ever gone to a locker room and you've seen like men doing that? Like, no, like it does not happen, but no, anyway. Um the carry movie is worse because she like gets her period in the shower and they all start laughing at her. I'm like, well, no, that would be like happen to any of you. Yeah, like that would not happen. And like also, like, you're just staying there laughing. I'm like, get out of there. Like, anyway, um, um yeah, she like kills another person in the locker scene, and then um then it's prom night, I think. She takes Craig backstage, um, similar to like how she was doing in the earlier part of the movie, Mary Lou. Um, but she says something about how like he's like too flaccid or something, something weird. She's like supposed to be a very promiscuous person. So like I don't know, she says something about that. Um and then she like knocks him out. Um and then she finally Billy approaches her and she's like finally like says, like, I'm here to like mess with you. Like, I know you you killed me, and I'm here to you know fuck with you. I'm coming for you. Um I think Bill runs and finds tries to look for the priest, but finds out that the priest is dead and he's actually buried in Mary Lou's grave because he wanted to see if Mary Lou's body was in there and it's not. Um now her spirit coming out, I don't know why that would make her body not be in the grave.
WilsonI feel like like once she possessed Vicky, Vicky just took the body out.
CaptainThat's why. I guess they had to bury the priest, so they were like, just do a swap. Yeah. Um and then um, oh my gosh, there's a scene that I love. This actually isn't my rag, but there's a scene that I love where I think somebody calls the home phone. I don't know if it's Bill or somebody else, calls the home phone of um Vicky's house. And it's it was like frag me that Mary Lou took the time to change the answering machine at her home where it says, Hey, uh it's like I'm, you know, Mary Lou having fun at prom. Um, I have places to be and people to kill. And then she says, Vicki doesn't live here anymore, don't bother leaving a message. And I'm like, why did you take the time to change the answering machine? Like, I I just I don't know, it made me laugh so hard. She actually took the time to change it. Um and then uh basically the her arch nemesis, Kelly, really wants to win prom queen. So she's like doing anything she can, including like um uh what's the word I'm looking for? Like, um what's that word? Where she's like stacking the votes for her. I I mean that's she's like cheating the system anyway. Yeah. Um but the price to do that is to like give a blowjob to the tech kid, which I was like, this is so gross. It's a very 80s movie, I feel like, with that. Um but uh doesn't work because Vicky Mary Lou overrides that anyway with her spirit self and wins prom Queen again. Um, which Vicky is very upset because she already gave this kid a blowjob. Um oh, and that's right, I think Craig was the one that called the answer machine because he was supposed to go to prom, but his father knocks him out so that he doesn't go because he thinks that um he's gonna be killed by Mary Lou. So Craig wakes up and he's trying to get there before Vicky gets killed because he loves Vicky and doesn't realize Mary Lou is in Vicky's body. Um so he comes to prom, but he's too late. Um
Prom Night Gunshot And Zombie Twist
Captainbasically Bill goes, Principal Bill goes back up to the rafters and instead of throwing a stink bomb down, just has a fucking gun. And school shooting style, the principal shoots Vicky to kill Mary Lou. I'm like, this is fucking nutso. Um and it what's really crazy is that again, people are not screaming and running at the gunshot. Which I guess this is like before.
WilsonThe different time?
CaptainI mean, I mean, I don't want to get like too dark, but what when was Columbine? That was in the 90s, right?
WilsonI think so.
CaptainSo like different time. Um just curious. Um yeah, that was in the 90s. Anyway. Um yeah, so Craig gets there and is like trying to, you know, he saw that that Vicki got shot. Um, but that's not the crazy part. I don't know how it's explained in the Wikipedia, but basically, like a zombie version of Mary Lou like emerges from Vicky's dead body. Like a resurrected form of her just like burst out of her body. I don't know what when I was watching that, I was like jaw open. I'm like, what is going on? And like when you first watched this, you were in like a crowd of people. Like, did did pee I guess everyone knew that was gonna happen?
WilsonYeah, or I mean, it wasn't like a crazy audience reaction from what I remember, but I think everyone was just having a good time.
CaptainOkay, because it's just like so absurd. And then she basically like starts wreaking havoc, and that's like after her zombie comes out, that's when people start screaming and running. I'm like, alright.
WilsonWell, alright. Everyone has their limits.
CaptainUm, and now she's just like making everybody run around. She's like, the lights are exploding. She's like fighting Bill and Craig.
WilsonUm very carry energy.
CaptainVery carry energy, yeah. That's that's that's very true. Um and then what I don't understand, there's a scene where she gets her crown finally put on her, and I'm like, is it's like her life purpose is fulfilled or something. It's like she's she's free because she gets like her crown put on. Is that that's kind of what I was getting? Yeah. She gets her crown and finally gives it to Mary Lou, seemingly bringing an end to her murderous wrath, and she is now Vicky's now free of possession. Um and I'm like, that's not very satisfying. Ugh.
WilsonWay to peek in high school.
CaptainI like really wanted her to kill more gross men. I don't know. Um, but yeah, so she can like finally like basically move beyond this like weird spirit purgatory.
WilsonUm you know, I guess like she is the villain in this movie, but also like the real villain, is it not the men?
CaptainIt is the men. It is the only good person, only good man in this movie, like really good man, is Vicky's father. Great dude. He was like, Yeah, girl, get yourself a new prom dress. Her mom's the one that's like a a nut child.
WilsonYeah, but didn't it? Didn't he like kiss her?
CaptainNo. Mary Lou, well, I mean, Mary Lou kissed him. He seemed like he was trying to fight it off.
WilsonHe didn't fight it off fast enough.
CaptainHe did that's true. He did not fight it off fast enough. And then the mom called her daughter the Jezebel, mad at the daughter. I mean, anyway, um, like it is Mary Lou in there, but like you don't know that, so like, anyway. Yeah, there isn't any like great male figure in this movie. Like, that's why I kind of wanted her to like kill the mom. I'm like, I'm not mad, honestly.
WilsonYeah, that's fair.
CaptainDo it, girl. Do it. Um, so I yeah, that's it's not a bad like I I in I was entertained during the movie. Um, I just the ending wasn't super satisfying. Like, I wanted her to like do more, but it's like she got her crown and then she was like, Great, I'm done killing people. Um, but um Vicky gets saved, like non-shot Vicky gets saved. Um, and then Bill uh puts Vicky and Craig in his car um and drives off, but we find out that Mary Lou is actually just now in Bill's body possessing him.
WilsonSo Yeah, it was kind of it was kind of silly, but okay. I mean, you can roll with it.
CaptainYeah, I mean like what's the b I mean the best way to fuck with somebody that killed you would be like possessing him. So I don't know.
WilsonYeah, but I'm like, what's she gonna do with these other people? Just around for a good time?
CaptainJust around for a good time. I don't know. Um the bursting out of the body thing was the most absurd. Like I I don't even know how you would explain that. Um but yeah, I mean I was entertained when I watched the movie. I wasn't upset about it at all.
Ratings Numbers And Cult Legacy
WilsonSo you liked it better than last week's.
CaptainYes. I gave this movie a three and a half. I think you gave it a three.
WilsonUm I gave it a two and a half, but I heard it. Because I don't know, this one was challenging. It was like in a sense, it was a garbage movie, but it was a really good time.
CaptainYeah. I d I don't know. I feel like we watched other 80s movies that are the same level of um Yeah, I'd say the same level. But I like actually was entertained.
WilsonI might have to change it.
CaptainYou did watch you said you watched it, you rewatched it even though you saw it once.
WilsonUm yeah, but I was like barely rewatched it. I was doing like a bunch of stuff around the house while I was going.
CaptainOkay. Um you put did I put this in here?
WilsonI did find some hot or not hot. I found some numbers for you.
CaptainOkay. So this was a is this a Canadian movie? Is that what that is?
WilsonYeah, so I don't know why. This is just how Wikipedia lists the numbers.
CaptainSo yeah, so a Canadian movie, and I guess budget was two and a half million Canadian dollars? Yeah. Is it dollars? Okay, and then um the box office was 2.7 million US dollars. So basically not good.
WilsonNo, no, no.
CaptainIt does have a 65 on Rotten Tomatoes, so that's not bad. Oh, and the average is a 3.2 on letterbox.
WilsonYeah, which isn't it isn't terrible either.
CaptainYeah, and like I said, I gave it a three and a half, so I wasn't mad about it. Um, I don't think the TV, yeah, like based on those numbers, it didn't really do well when it first came out, but it did have a big cult following years later. I don't know what like initiated the cult following or like why cult following's ever initiated, I guess, but um like it has enough of a cult following that like your local movie theater did like a showing of the movie, you know what I mean?
WilsonYeah.
CaptainBut um, it did have a cult following, and then Mary Lou Maloney also would appear in the next installment of the franchise, Prom Night 3, The Last Kiss from 1990, but I didn't really see much about that movie. Definitely didn't have a cult following. Um Prom Knight. Did it say Prom Night 3? Um You've never seen that movie, right?
WilsonNo. I did go back and watch the original Prom Night after I saw this one.
CaptainNot the remake that we watched. No.
WilsonYeah, I wanted to see that like with the one with Jamie Lee Curtis.
CaptainOh, Jamie Lee Curtis, right, right, right. I still wanted to watch that. I forgot about that. Um yeah, Prom Night 3 has a 16%. I can't imagine this is good. But yes, Marilu Spirit comes back as she returns to the Hamilton High School to help a nerdy student get revenge on those who wronged him.
WilsonThat sounds could be fun, maybe.
CaptainYeah, but a 16, oof. Yeah, that's not good. Um yeah. Anyway, um, oh you ha put some other stuff in here. Is this other things you found online?
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm written and filmed in The Haunting of Hamilton High. Oh, writ oh, sorry, written and filmed as the Haunting of Hamilton High. That was the original title. Yeah. And the title was changed to Hello Mary Lou Prom Night 2 by the Samuel L. Golden Company who purchased it and decided to market it as a sequel because the similarities to the original Prom Knight from 1980. As the such is the name of the school? Really?
WilsonI think they're just saying like it was entirely coincidental, those two things that it related to the first movie, but I guess like this was all filmed with a different name, and then they just decided later to make it a sequel.
CaptainSo the similarities between this movie and Prom Night is that the name of the school and oh, the line in both of the movies that it's not who you go with, it's who takes you home. Those two similarities, they decided to make it a sequel.
WilsonWell, I think it's yeah, that was just coincidental, and maybe they thought a movie based off of another movie might do better than just like uh a brand new one. I don't know.
CaptainBut based on your watching of the original prom night, there are almost no similarities.
WilsonNo, you never know that they're not.
CaptainI mean, this is what year does the original prom night take place, out of curiosity.
WilsonUm I'm looking it up really quick. 1980. Oh, okay, but the movie takes place in 1974.
CaptainOkay. So between the time skips and prom night too, yeah.
WilsonYeah, like it's yeah. There's no character overlap.
CaptainMary Lou doesn't come out during Prom Night. Okay. Um, yeah, and then I'm nervous with this one that you start with ooh. Um, when tasked with directing reshoots, first time director Ron Oliver. Oh, this is his first time directing. Um Ron Oliver called Wes Craven for some advice on directing a Tina Harf, and his advice was give them a scare, give them a hard on, send them home. Oh. Why?
WilsonI guess just appealing to teenagers who are like, make it scary, make it sexy.
CaptainOh. Gotcha. That's what they want. That makes sense.
WilsonThere's where your like sexy sour scenes came from.
CaptainI cannot get over those. Like, uh yeah. Uh and they've remade Carrie like six times or something.
WilsonThey're coming out. I mean, I'm gonna watch the shit out of it, but Mike Flanagan has a show, Carrie, coming out this year.
CaptainI mean, Mike Fanagan, I can't. I can't say no. Um, did you have a rag for this movie?
WilsonUm
Best Kills Worst Vibes Final Thoughts
WilsonI mean, I think it's the one that you had, or at least something you said that was cool, but the the chalkboard effect when she like sucked. Oh, that's so cool. That was that was pretty cool. Um but I think my actual raise of glass is probably just like you start off the movie and like almost right away a girl gets set on fire. It's just like you're just like, oh, this is where we're starting from a hundred.
CaptainWe really are.
WilsonWhere are we going with the rest of this movie?
CaptainYeah, it starts at a hundred and then the very ending of the zombie bursting body is like a hundred and ten. Like, I don't know it was like what's going on. Um, I actually really liked so part of that locker room scene, hate that whole scene, except the very end. The girl that she's chasing, the Vicky's friend that Mary Lou is chasing, hides in one of the lockers. Um she's crammed in a locker and closes the door and is like trying to be really quiet. And, you know, Mary Lou is basically like teasing her. Like she's like, you know, walking through the lockers, acting like she can't find her, um, like, you know, humming or like whistling some ominous, like, you know, 50s pop song. So like something that would be from Mary Lou's time. Anyway, it looks like she doesn't know the girl's hiding in the locker, and then she turns at the last second and faces the locker, so the girl can like make eye contact with her through the little holes, and then Mary Lou, like with her spirit power, crushes the whole line of lockers. So the locker that that girl's in is slammed uh like flat. And I was like, I was not expecting her to die that way, and I've also never seen a death in a movie like that. So I just thought it was really interesting to be a good thing.
WilsonIt's a unique function.
CaptainYeah, a unique, yeah, like a unique kill that I wasn't expecting. Um that girl didn't really deserve to die, but um I don't know. Her death was just it was just interesting and different. So that was my raise of glass. Um that or well, Kelly doesn't really get served as much as she got she gets slapped in the face, which that's a good that's a good slap. She deserved it. She's a total bitch. Um so yeah, that was probably my raise of glass. Um but yeah, I don't know. I I really would recommend this movie. I actually liked it a lot.
WilsonYeah, it it actually is pretty good.
CaptainLike if you're looking for an 80s, you know, quirky comedy horror, it's pretty good. Um but yeah, the goopy rocking horse is is by poor one out. Like I mean it gets worse.
WilsonI mean, for some people that probably makes the movie.
CaptainLike later on in the film, Wilson, like at I think it's around the make out with her dad scene, she's like sticking her fingers in the horse's mouth and the tongue is like salivating, like it's dripping. I was like, okay, we we nobody asked for that. Like, we I don't even know what we're doing here, cut it. I don't that's yeah, they really had a lot of fun with that claymation or whatever animatronic rocking horse thing. Um, but I'd be fine if I never saw it again. Um, anyway, so um, yeah, that is my Mary Lou. Anything else? Any other any other things to say?
WilsonUm No, I think that's it. Definitely watch it.
CaptainI
Next Movie Pick And Closing Advice
Captainhave um next time on the Red Arm Podcast, we're watching Sleepwalkers, which is like that shapeshifting vampire thing that we it came up during one movie that we were it came up as like a side tangent during a movie, and uh and then I got really interested in watching it. I don't know if you remember that.
WilsonUm, it sounds vaguely familiar.
CaptainI'm looking at the cast and I'm like, I remember talking about I think it has to do with like Stephen King or yeah. Yeah, it's like written by Stephen King and it's like I can't remember something about it. It's like he it's not like not based on a book. It's like one of his f only a few movies that's like not based on I don't know, something. Um I can't remember the details, but I don't know. I'm kind of excited for it. It sounds like it's not gonna be too bad.
WilsonWait, so are you saying he like didn't write it as a book?
CaptainOr what do you uh something like that? Um it had like an in something interesting about it, and I can't remember. Does that sound like something or no? Am I making that up?
WilsonUh I have no idea. Um, it's on Netflix.
CaptainOh, nice. Easy, easy to find. Um it says it was the first time King wrote a screenplay intended for the screen rather than adapting one of his novels. That's what it is. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. So time to dabble. Um, okay. So that's yeah, that's next time. Um oh man, what the fuck? Advice could you pull from this thing?
WilsonYeah, what are you gonna what do you have? I need something.
CaptainUm I'm not mad at Mary Lou. It's that bad. Um like I can't.
WilsonIt's a this is a good for her type movie.
CaptainYeah, this is almost like good for her. Like, I don't know. Let her live her life. If she wants to be permiqu promiscuous, I mean, I don't know. Fuck it. Um like she gets killed for it. I mean, I don't know. Um, I have already mentioned this. This is perfect advice. Um, if you kill somebody, probably shouldn't return to the scene of the crime and definitely shouldn't work there.
