This week, Captain and Wilson discuss the 1992 horror, Sleepwalkers, directed by Mick Garris. This is the only Stephen King film not originally a novel - he wrote this story specifically to be made as a movie.

The film discussion begins around: 10:31.

Blair Witch Reboot And Recent Watches

Wilson

How's it going?

Captain

Things look good. Things are going good. Rocking it out.

Wilson

There are two things I want to talk to you about.

Captain

Okay. One you've briefly mentioned to me already.

Wilson

Yeah, so I think you saw it, but the um I guess they announced a couple weeks ago that they are doing Blair Witch again. Um, but it's not a remake, and it sounds like the original director or directors and some of the stars will be executive producers. So I don't know. It seems like the discussion split of cautiously optimistic based on who's involved, but also why.

Captain

Yeah, the movie was not. I mean, have I watched it since it came out? Like, no. Right? Like, I don't think what was that, like 99 or something?

Wilson

Oh, wait, we watched that in college.

Captain

We watched Blair Wish in K.

Wilson

I'm pretty sure.

Captain

I have no memory of that.

Wilson

Because I'm pretty sure I remember your like your roommate or that that other person that lived on that floor just like freaking out.

Captain

Really?

Wilson

I'm pretty sure. I could be mistaken that for another movie, but I definitely re-watched it in college.

Captain

Oh well, we could have, and I just blacked it out. But I don't remember I remember I watched it when it was like newware, and I was like, even as a kid, I was like, I don't know, it was like kind of dumb.

Wilson

I it was better than I remember like in college, I was like, okay, this is actually kinda good.

Captain

Really?

Wilson

Yeah.

Captain

Was that like the start of the found footage phenomenon?

Wilson

I think so, or at least like the first really, really big one that did so well, and the budget was like absolutely nothing, and it made so much money.

Captain

Okay, I mean, good for her. Good for her. Let's see. So you said this was Blum, right?

Wilson

Um, oh, did I say yeah. I guess I did. Um let me confirm that before I because the post I'm reading now didn't call that out.

Captain

It says Lionsgate Blumhouse. I guess they announced in 2024 they were gonna do this, but uh a release is closer to 2026. Um it says the reboot is going to Keynes. Somehow. Interesting.

Wilson

I do not think Blumhouse should be I'm You're so overbull. Jason Blum has let me down too many times.

Captain

Yeah, I could see that. It's like sometimes when A24 comes on the screen too, it's like, okay, I could like really like this or I could be very disappointed. You know what I mean? It's like a similar kind of um there's really not a lot online about this, Wilson. Like this is this in general.

Wilson

Uh yeah, I guess we'll just have to see what how it goes. I don't know.

Captain

There's supposedly a budget of ten million dollars. Five times the original. Um but yeah. That you kind of make me want to watch the original again.

Wilson

I you should.

Captain

I mean, even if I did watch it in college, I mean that would have been like ten years ago, right? More. Yeah.

Wilson

Yeah.

Captain

Yeah.

Wilson

I so it's probably time, in any case. Like just I'm due. You're due. You're due. Yeah. It's that like every ten years you just have to watch it kind of thing, you know.

Captain

Comes out of the Disney vault. Yep. Um, okay, well, we'll see how we feel. Um, what about something very bad is gonna happen, and that was fun on Netflix. You have a D BTF in here.

Wilson

I watched it based on your recommendation, and I I just want to say first, you know, for all of our podcast episodes, you specifically filter out movies that involve like dog mutilation or dog death. And then like episode two of this show, they're like ripping skulls off dogs, and I'm like Yeah, I should have.

Captain

Yeah, you know, I did not watch that scene. Like, I I remember covering my eyes for almost all of that. Um I should have, I like literally blocked that out because the rest of the show, like the rest of the episodes are really good.

Wilson

Oh, yeah, no, it's it was really good, and I was just like shocked that like you watched this and you recommended it.

Captain

Yeah, I I do remember that scene happened, but I'm like I I have no clear image of it in my mind because I I'm pretty sure I like literally closed my eyes. Like I literally did not watch that scene. Yeah, I just it was just knew what was happening.

Wilson

It was gory. I I guess the theme of this week is like animal mutilation. It's like Yeah, oh my god, talk about the movie, but uh but the the dog stuff aside, something very bad is gonna happen, it's very good.

Captain

Yeah, like it's Duffer Brothers, right? So like they really redeemed themselves.

Wilson

Did they like hide their name in there? Because I didn't see it pop up. Like, I I guess I didn't watch the credits. Um But I guess I was expecting like a brought to you by the Duffer Brothers.

Captain

To be honest, I was just told that. I wasn't actually didn't actually like look that up, but I really I'm pretty sure it is them.

Wilson

Okay.

Captain

But now you make me second guess. Yeah, production is is the Duffer Brothers production company.

Wilson

Okay. Well, um the the main girl, I've never seen her in anything before that I'm aware of, but she was really good.

Captain

The main oh, yeah, Rachel.

Wilson

Yeah, Camilla Marone looks like.

Captain

Yeah, she looks like a hodgepodge of like four different famous people.

Wilson

She does. She is like like um I see some Mia Goth. I see Soph Sophie Nelise MS. Yeah.

Captain

I think so, yeah. And then like a little bit of um Anya Taylor Joy or something in the eyes. I don't know.

Wilson

I can see that. She was in a relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio for five years.

Captain

Oh, uh, and then she aged out, huh?

Wilson

Yeah, so it looks like somewhere around 2017 to 2022. So shit've been 18. Uh right? Because yeah. Uh wait, 20.

Captain

20, 20, yeah. She would have been twenty. Yeah. 19? Something like that.

Wilson

Some yeah, some are really icky.

Captain

Um yeah, you know, that's that's none of my business. Um but yeah, I do really like her. I've seen the main guy, um, Adam DiMarco, in um that TV show, what's it called?

Wilson

Overcompensating, that one we were just talking about last week. And then also like White Lotus season two.

Captain

Oh yes, and White Lotus, yeah. But the show's the show's really good. Um, the girl that plays his sister, oh my god.

Wilson

I hated her.

Captain

She's terrible. She's so fucking annoying. Terrible, terrible.

Wilson

I mean, I know her character is written to be terrible, but I guess it's just that like character type. I don't know. It's just oh grading.

Captain

Yes. Controlling, grading. All of the above, but the actual show is really good. They build up a lot of suspense, um and it made me want to keep watching. So I don't know, I would recommend.

Wilson

And the ending, like they stuck the like I think they stuck the landing very well.

Captain

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. I um sorry, slightly unrelated. I wanted to see Hokum really bad, but we didn't get a chance to see it. Have you seen that?

Wilson

Oh, yeah.

Captain

I've heard it's like super good.

Wilson

Um it was very good. I don't want to like overhype it.

Captain

Well, it like wasn't showing anywhere in like you have to watch it in like standard because I guess the Michael movie or something is playing on it. Do you guys watch movies in Dolby?

Wilson

We try to, yeah.

Captain

Okay, yeah. I don't know, maybe, but it's always like, uh, is it worth it when like I could just watch this on an OLED TV at home in like two months?

Wilson

Well, yeah, but sometimes I'm like, I want to watch it now.

Captain

Yes.

Wilson

Like I wanted to see, um, I heard it didn't do very well, but the Lee Cronin's the Mummy.

Captain

Oh my gosh, the reviews are so bad, Wilson, that we were like, we can't go see that.

Wilson

I mean, I heard it's coming to it's like next week, it'll be on digital. So um, so I was a little disappointed I didn't get to see it in theaters, but they're just like it did so poorly, it was barely in there. Um and then the times it was like I could only find like 3 p.m. or 10 p.m. And I'm like, what I can't do those.

Captain

I um yeah. I I I don't know if I'm gonna watch that. Maybe, maybe for the podcast. Um we are gonna go see Obsession. I don't know if you saw the reviews for that maybe.

Wilson

Oh, is that the one where like he's like I want or like his wishes for the girl to love? Yeah, that does look really good.

Captain

It does look good, so I'll let you know how that goes.

Wilson

Okay. Is that out this weekend?

Captain

I think yeah, yes. Yes. Um yeah, I am a little upset about hookup. We'll we'll see. Um, okay. Where are we? Where are we?

Wilson

Uh yeah, bring us in.

Captain

Um, get us in here. Where am I?

Welcome And Movie Pick

Wilson

Well, welcome to the 192nd episode of the Red Rum Podcast. We're very close to 200, uh, where we review horror movies while enjoying an adult beverage or two.

Captain

And I'm Captain.

Wilson

And I'm Wilson, and this week we're reviewing the American horror film written by Stephen King and directed by Mike Garris.

Captain

Mick.

Wilson

Mick. Um so Stephen King, of course, Stephen King, very well-known author. Um I and this might be in the hot goss, but he so this was this actually wasn't based on a book. It's not an adaptation. Stephen King just wrote the movie.

Captain

You really needed this one on screen. For some reason.

Wilson

Um and then the director, Mick Garris, um, he's done a lot of Stephen King adaptations. He was the director and writer of Critters 2. Um he wrote The Fly 2. I don't think I've seen that. It's probably not that good. Um wrote Hocus Pocus. Is that like the original?

Captain

I think so. I think he was a writer on there, yeah.

Wilson

Okay. Um, and then he's directed like a lot of horror shows for you know an episode or two.

Captain

Yeah.

Wilson

Let me see what he looks like. Who's this man?

Captain

What is he giving? What is he serving?

Wilson

Huh. Yeah, I don't. Yeah, it doesn't look familiar. I mean, I'm not saying I recognize characters all the time.

Captain

The Mick Garris that you're looking at.

Wilson

I mean, I don't think there are that many.

Captain

Oh, wait, this man with all the hair?

Wilson

Well, not in the picture I'm looking at. His hair is like a fourth of that length. And he's he making That's a scary picture.

Captain

Oh, you know, picture number two, yeah. That looks like a direct one. Yeah, yeah. I don't know why this came up for me first. I mean, why is he making this face?

Wilson

I don't know. That's given drugs.

Captain

This

Sleepwalkers Background And Cast

Captain

whole movie's given drugs, it sounds like. Yeah. Um wow, he's been married for a gazillion years.

Wilson

Well, he's also like a gazillion years old. Just kidding.

Captain

He's married to somebody that was in Critters 2 and The Shining and Psycho 4 and Sleepwalkers. Wait, who is this? Who the fuck is it?

Wilson

Oh my gosh, you don't know who that is.

Captain

No, I don't know who that's Cynthia Garris? I don't know who this is. She looks oh, she is the female cop in this movie.

Wilson

Okay. You know, for a second in this movie, I could when I like showed like a glimpse of the female cop. I was like, is that Juliet from Lost?

Captain

Oh. It looked to me, it looked like Vera Famiga, and I was like, timeline that doesn't make sense, I feel like.

Wilson

Oh, yeah, probably not. I don't think mine would either, thinking she was from Lost.

Captain

But um You know, she does look like a mix between those two women, I'm gonna be honest.

Wilson

Okay, I'll take it.

Captain

So anyway.

Wilson

Um okay, so there's like the cast, there's a lot of at least currently well-known people.

Captain

Dude, we gotta start finding a movie where the cast is like four people again, because these cast preparations I have to do are like absurd, where I'm like the list just keeps going. I'm like, oh my god. We got it's I know it's my fault.

Wilson

Like I pick the movies most of the time, but uh we don't I yeah, I can uh I don't need to I guess say what their entire filmography, but um so the um one star is Brian Krause. Um he plays Charles Brady. Um he's known for his role in charmed. Baba Barrel uh plays Leo Wyatt.

Captain

You love Charmed? I I couldn't remember. Oh yeah, wait, you went to the Charmed House in LA or something? Or Stamp Frame?

Wilson

You and I drove by it, I'm pretty sure.

Captain

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I couldn't remember. Okay.

Wilson

Yeah.

Captain

I don't think I've watched it. Is it worth watching?

Wilson

Um, I mean, it's like of a quality of supernatural.

Captain

I did watch like 15 seasons of supernatural before I gave up, so well, this only has eight seasons.

Wilson

Um I would say try it out. It's pretty good.

Captain

Okay, I don't think I've ever tried it.

Wilson

Um okay, and then we have I don't know how to say her last name, but Alice Krieg. Krieg. That sounds right. Plays Mary Brady. Um she was the witch in Gretel and Hansel. Um I know her as the Borg Queen from Star Trek. Um R G.

Captain

Okay, perfect.

Wilson

Um, I need to show you a picture of her.

Captain

A different photo of her?

Wilson

No, um who she is in uh this character. Here, I'm putting it in the chat. It's a little bit different.

Captain

Oh, that's her. Yeah. Oh. Yeah. What what is attached to her chest?

Wilson

She's like half rob or almost entirely a robot, basically. Her cyborg, you know. Perfect. Nice. Um, all right, then we have uh I also don't know how to say her name correctly, but Mad Shim Amok. Um she's most well known for Twin Peaks, um, and then it's the the two films related to that. And I guess she was in Riverdale. I didn't watch Riverdale.

Captain

No, neither did I.

Wilson

Um we have Cindy Pinkett, or sorry, sorry, Cindy Pickett as Helen. Um she was the mom in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Captain

Um I don't see I couldn't I recognized her face, and I was like, but I barely recognize her face, and that makes sense that that's where she's from.

Wilson

Um I don't see him listed here, but the who plays her husband in this movie, Lyman Ward, they were actually married in real life at one point, and they also played husband and wife in Ferris Bueller.

Captain

Ah wait, what?

Wilson

And I think that's where they met. I think I saw that.

Captain

Okay. Well, I don't know. I I don't know. Uh maybe he was listed later on in the cast, but Yeah, I don't know. Wow. Where they I guess they were married for the two movies. They played married. Were they still married?

Wilson

If what I remember from the hot goss is correct, they met on Ferris Bueller. Um and yeah, then they were married for this movie, and I I'm pretty sure they're divorced now.

Captain

Damn. Sleepwalkers got 'em.

Wilson

Got 'em. Got him good. Um also have Ron Pearlman. Um, he plays a police captain. Um, he's Hellboy, Sons of an Air, Anarchy, played two. In a lot of Guillermo del Toro movies, um, that down movie we we did. I don't remember him in that, but I believe you.

Captain

Yeah, I wrote it in here because it popped up, but um I literally cannot remember his role at all.

Wilson

So well, he was also in charmed, but only for an episode. It's probably in X-Files too, for instance. Probably, honestly, yeah. Uh then we have Glenn Shadix uh as Mr. Fallows. Um, he was in Beetlejuice, and he was also the mayor of Halloween Town and the Nightmare Before Christmas.

Captain

Voice acting. Voice acting.

Wilson

Um, okay, so then the next four people are all well-known like kind of horror directors, or at least of that similar genre.

Captain

Yeah, I think there was something, I feel like it's in the hot goose or something about like I don't know, why he brought all these people in.

Wilson

Yeah, I was kind of curious about that.

Captain

Uh I feel like I I there's a I like I usually prepare these like so far in advance so that I don't remember the move that them like like super well when I'm watching the movie. Like some things will come up back in my head, but I'm like, I most of the time I do these like three weeks in advance. So I have a vague memory that there was something in the hot goss about it.

Wilson

Okay. Well, I'll be curious to see what that is. Um so the one is uh John Landis. Um, I mean, he's known for directing like Animal House, Blues Brothers, Coming to America, um, American Werewolf in London. A lot of stuff. Um let's see. We also have uh Joe Dante. Um he did Gremlins, the sequel. I don't know what the howling is. But something else. Something. Um and then we have Clive Barker, I think he's most known for Hellraiser. Um doing or uh yeah, creating the Hellraiser movies.

Captain

Um also Ron Pearlman, right? No, Hellboy, sorry.

Wilson

Oh, uh oh. Uh and then we also have Toby Hooper, um, most well known, I think, for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Um and then he did like poltergeist, uh, that sort of thing. So yeah, a lot of directors. Um, and then finally we have Mark Hamill who just shows up for like a minute in the beginning of the movie.

Captain

That's Mark Hamill? Oh my god.

Wilson

Oh yeah, when we were watching this, Finn was like, that looks like a mix between Mark Hamill and um uh what's his face? Uh Willie M. Macy, and I was like, well, it is Mark Hamill.

Captain

Wait, Willie Mate, who is that?

Wilson

Uh Frank Gallagher from Shameless.

Captain

Oh he's so nasty in that role. It's like hard to not be able to do that.

Wilson

Yeah, but he's like so good at that role.

Captain

Um man. So this must have been one of his first films, right? Oh no, no, wait. When was Star Wars was like the 70s or something? Oh really?

Wilson

I think why do I feel like 1977 was the year?

Captain

Really?

Wilson

Well, hold on, hold on. Let me get over here.

Captain

No, you're probably right. Don't I I don't know anything. I'm gonna be so honest. I'm stupid and dumb.

Wilson

I mean, it's like it is a very early movie for him. Well, I guess because I feel like he's been in film forever.

Captain

But still still shows up and stuff.

Wilson

Yeah.

Captain

I I'm I I'm like happy for him that he gets to do like voice acting and stuff. I feel like he enjoys that.

Wilson

Oh yeah. That must be like such a nice gig as an actor.

Captain

Yeah, people talk about it. You like don't have to get super dressed up or nothing. Just like have fun with people in a booth.

Wilson

Yeah, come in, do your thing, go home, get paid like a bajillion dollars. Well, if maybe, depending on you know.

Captain

I mean, depending on how famous you are. Okay. Well and Anyway, Mark you mark's in here.

Wilson

Mark you mark. Wait, wait, what? Oh.

Captain

I was like, not that, Marky Mark. No. Mark Hamill.

Wilson

Okay.

Dead Cats And Instant Chaos

Wilson

Okay, so the movie starts off with Mark Hamill and another cop, and they're investigating like the movie starts off with the definition of a sleepwalker, which was weird. Yes.

Captain

Like literally a dictionary definition, which I was like, what? Why?

Wilson

Yeah, they like something involved with cats, and then they like want to suck the life force out of virgins.

Captain

Yeah, they need to feed off of human virgin life or something.

Wilson

But it has to be a female virgin.

Captain

Yeah. Again, it's like, King, if you wanted to put it in a book, just just put the words in a book. I don't like if you're making the movie, take all the like take that out. I don't know.

Wilson

Yeah, there's a lot of I feel like a lot of weirdness in this movie that I think in a book where you have space to explain things, it could have been better.

Captain

Yep.

Wilson

Yep.

Captain

Um But yes, then after that definition, then yes, then it goes to Mark Campbell.

Wilson

Yeah, so he and this other cop are investigating, I think like it was either a smell or I forget why they were there, but there were they showed up this house and there's like a bunch of like cats, dead cats, hanging from a tree or something. Some of them are missing like half their bodies.

Captain

It's just like comes in real hot. Comes in real hot.

Wilson

Yeah. Uh they go inside, you know, they open a closet, a cat jumps out, and then a skeleton that has braces falls out. The skeleton also screams. I don't know if you heard that. Like when they like there was a screaming sound effect after the I'm like okay.

Captain

I yeah, I don't know. I didn't think of it that it was like a voice from the skeleton. I thought it was just like movie sound. But yeah, it's like apparently a little girl because it has braces on it. But I'm assuming that was the place that the Charles and his mom just came from with this like horrified corpse. I think so. But yeah, and then the credits role, like the opening credits, and then it's a bunch of hieroglyphics behind them, which I was like, okay, are we gonna pull are we gonna bring this back like to something in ancient Egypt? No, no, no. So we're in Travis, Indiana.

Wilson

Yes, and we basically meet Charles as Brian Krause's character. Um, and it's him like in his room looking at a yearbook, basically picking out a girl, and he like slices his arm so he's bleeding, and then like puts a heart around her.

Captain

It's like a tea. He makes a tea for Tanya.

Wilson

Yeah, it's weird. So I don't know.

Captain

That's the least grossest thing about this whole matchup.

Wilson

Well, that's true. Because right after this, he goes like downstairs, and he's like really um affectionate with this other person in the house, and we're like, is this a current girlfriend? Is this maybe his mom? And they're just a little touchy-feely.

Captain

Yeah, because it's like so clearly he's a high school student because he's like looking at a yearbook, but then he goes downstairs and he's like, Let's dance with this woman, and I'm like, Okay, but you guys are like in a house together, and she's like making dinner or something, so I'm like, What's going on? Yeah, and their faces their face just keep getting closer and closer as they're talking, and we were like, What?

Wilson

Yeah, and I think at some point here they do say like mom or son, and then they make out, and then he carries her upstairs with the implication that they're having sex.

Captain

Mm-hmm.

Wilson

Mm-hmm.

Captain

Nobody asked for that.

Wilson

Nasty, absolutely disgusting.

Captain

And it if this was not something that I if I had not read about this movie ahead of time, like knew that it was about like werewolves or something, or it wasn't for the podcast, yeah, we would have been, we would have been done. We would have cut that off. Um because what? But we kept we kept reluctantly going forward.

Wilson

Yep. Uh so then he um purposely runs into Tanya at her place of employment, which is a movie theater. Um she like falls head over heels and they like make loose plans to meet up, I guess.

Captain

Yeah, I I'm I was um I don't know if you noticed how small the soda and popcorn was in 1992, because I was like hysterically laughing at the size of that popcorn that he got at the movie. It's like literally like I I don't know, it's like you could hold it, you could hold it was like I don't know. This I it's like a medium soda now was like their popcorn bucket. I was like, Yeah, that's long gone. People get like a like, give me 10 pounds of popcorn at the movie theater.

Wilson

Right. So um it cuts like the next day in class, and Charles is reading, he already has an assignment, he's reading his creative cre creative story something rather. Something. Which is basically detailing his own history, which is I don't weird. So he's talking about shapeshifters. Um but Tanya's like, and the rest of the girls in class are like in love with this man.

Captain

I mean, he's like charismatic and like charming and like a very I don't like I don't even know how to like a 90s white boy way. Like I don't even know how to say that, but he like very approachable, I guess. Like I I don't know, he's just just a guy that smiles.

Wilson

And um the teacher likes him because I guess he had an actual story that was good, but then like he makes fun of the teacher or calls him out on something, and the teacher clearly has a grudge, or like we see him staring at him out the window, and it's like, why are you so Yeah?

Captain

So I thought this is what I was hoping the movie was gonna do, is I thought that teacher was going to be like a sleepwalker's hunter. I was like, okay, alright, we're getting we're getting some the plot thickens. No, no, no. So yeah, he just mad. He's just mad about the a square has six sides.

Wilson

Yeah, I mean we find out in a couple scenes, like he has more reason to not trust him, but still I'm like, this feels weird. Uh yeah.

Captain

So And then and then he talks to Tanya, and Tanya's like, let like invites him to the graveyard basically with for a photo shoot. Oh, and we also notice at night that the mom, I think we we had a conversation with the mom at night about how she like hates cats or something.

Wilson

Yeah, she's trying to trap cats outside of their house. Yeah. Like again, with more cat bullshit.

Captain

There's a lot of cat uh pain in this movie. Yeah, let me look up if Stephen King loves or hates cats.

Wilson

I am curious about that. Um so I guess the next day, whenever um Charles is on his way to meet Tanya at the cemetery, you know, to hang out or whatever. Um the cop, or not the cop, the um the teacher in his little like VW Beetle pulls up behind him and like gets him to pull over. And I'm like, what is this teacher doing following the student and getting him to pull over? Uh and basically he's like, I know your transcripts are fake, the town you're from isn't real.

Captain

And he was like, and and and Charles even says, like, yeah, I don't really have any, like, if you're trying to blackmail me, like I don't have anything to offer you, like the only thing that costs money is this car, and I can't part with the car that I'm driving right now. And then his teacher says, like, money's not the only way you can do a transaction or something.

Wilson

I guess I missed that line or it didn't trigger here, because I also see this description says he tried to sexually assault Charles. I did not catch that at all.

Captain

Wait, what? You didn't catch that's why I wrote in the chat, I was like, why does he just have a bunch of adults around him abusing him?

Wilson

Because I just thought you meant because he was like very like he like grabbed him or something.

Captain

No, his hand reaches like down to his crotch. And that's when his hand gets ripped off.

Wilson

I must have been looking at the chat when that happened because I did not did not see that.

Captain

I mean, you don't like see it all the way, but you basically like see like where his lap would be, and then like an arm going down, um, and then his arm comes back up and his hand is missing. So it got ripped off real quick.

Wilson

So weird.

Captain

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Again, somehow not the worst part of the movie.

Wilson

There's so many weird things that like that are wrong in this movie.

Captain

Yeah, and then basically he Charles ends up shape shifting in front of him, or like cat shifts, I don't know, alien cat shifts, um, and then has to go chase him into the woods and kill him because he can't let people see him like this and survive. So he like dumps the body back there. But um, I love this is by far the worst fake eating acting I've ever seen, where Charles from above, you see him on top of the teacher, supposedly like attacking him or eating it. Dude, it's just his face is just his head is just turning back and forth with his mouth open. Like, ow, ow, ow. Like, that's the best shot. That's the best shot we got. Okay.

Wilson

TV movie vibes, I'm telling you.

Captain

Yeah, it really is giving, you're right. It really is like TV movie vibes. Um, so yeah, and then right after this, the police chase

Cemetery Attack And Cat Weakness

Captain

him down. There's that police chase.

Wilson

Yes, and he's basically having fun with the cop, they're just like doing all kinds of road stuff. Um, and I think at one point the cop pulls alongside him while they're, you know, racing down the road, basically. And um Clovis the cat, which is in the car with the cop. I guess he's the honorary police cat. Uh I guess he like pops his head up and Charles sees him, and of course, him and his mom hate cats, so his face went all like morphy.

Captain

Uh the cat like scared him. I don't think he was expecting a cat to be in the car.

Wilson

Yeah, yeah. And the cop saw all the face his face doing all sorts of weird shit, but um basically, you know, he's like shocked, and um Charles gets way far ahead, and we find out he can make his car disappear.

Captain

Well, turn invisible. Yeah. Yeah.

Wilson

Um so he did that, the cop couldn't find him and drove off, and then as Charles' car is reappearing, it shows up as like a a Mustang instead.

Captain

Yeah, they call it dimming in this movie. Like that's the term they use for like turning something invisible. I don't know if that's again, there does seem to be like a lot of lore in this movie that like we're not getting any background at. Like, I don't know, we're getting like nothing about any type of history, which again, I feel like this would have done better in a book.

Wilson

Yeah, because like also Stephen King writes really in-depth characters with lots of background, and like I think this movie would have benefited so much from the Yeah, the first time I Yeah, like I the first time I read Stephen King books, like or I don't know, whatever, but recently whatever that last one was the um Institute, right?

Captain

That's Stephen King. Yeah, it's like holy crap, every character is so in-depth, and every part of the book is so in-depth. Like, like I did he not want to flush any of this out, like I I don't know. Uh we we don't get any of like the legend or anything about like the history at all. So it feels super random, and then on top of that, the movie's like really weird, like gross weird.

Wilson

Yeah. I just I don't understand why.

Captain

Like you know, on Reddit, just just throwing some hot goose out here, people are like, Stephen King did a lot of cocaine, and they're like, this movie's giving cocaine Stephen King is what they've is what they've said on there.

Wilson

So I would believe that I haven't seen him do cocaine, but I feel like that's a very I've heard that too about him and in some of his earlier books. Just like I think they say too for it, like I don't know if you ever read that, but the whole chapter of like when the kids gangbang, they're like Yes, this is just oh, and like the turtle lore in that book, it's just yeah.

Captain

Uh that also came up in the discussion on Reddit, yeah. That it's between that scene and it and this movie that they're like, oh, these are just drug fueled, and and someone said publish, so yeah.

Wilson

Um okay, so after he escapes the cop, he goes and meets up with Tanya in the cemetery. It's going well, she's like all you know, in head over heels, that sort of thing. And um up until this point, like I think the night before, um Charles was asking his mom, like, or like, is there a way to not have to do this to her? Because I think he is he does kind of like her a little bit.

Captain

Yeah, I think he likes her a little bit. And in his creative writing story, he said like he was really tired, or the sleepwalkers are really tired of having to constantly move around, which like I guess he's uh so I guess he has that sentiment personally. Um but his mom, I I don't know, um uh is like starving basically and says like she needs to feed, like she is not gonna survive, she doesn't feed. So like she's like you must kill Tanya or like get her life or whatever the fuck. Um but yes, he does seem a little like reluctant to do that. Um but um only temporarily, I'm gonna be honest.

Wilson

Yeah, because I mean like in the cemetery, he goes like full in for stealing her soul or whatever.

Captain

Yeah, he goes from like having this like charismatic, like charming personality to like basically like he turns and I swear it's like John not John, Jesus Christ, Jim carries like the mask, like the mischief character, where he's like you know, wacky with his movements, and he's like, Isn't it fun, kid, or something? I'm like, okay, wait, this is like a total switch up. Like, uh maybe that's supposed to be maybe that's very on purpose, but it's like super weird. Like, you're like, where was this person? Yeah, I wasn't expecting his personality to change so drastically. It's not like his mom's personality changes that much when she changes.

Wilson

But I I don't know, but his face got all weird, and then this felt like seem to enjoy. Yes, this felt like a rape scene almost, like it didn't get that far, but he was like manhandling her, they were scratching each other, he was like sucking the soul through her mouth, and she scratch I think she stabbed him in the eye with a corkscrew. Um he seemed basically unfazed, but she beats him up a good bit during this.

Captain

The cop shows up and the cop even shoots him, which doesn't do anything.

Wilson

No, but he's still like clearly harmed. The cop gets like a pencil shoved through his ear and also shot, so the cop's gone.

Captain

Yeah, but Clovis salute to my main man, saves the day. Like, Clovis attacks him, saves Tanya, um, you know, survives.

Wilson

Yeah, he like starts smoking whenever the cat attacks him.

Captain

Yeah, again, really feel like we should get some background on this because it does seem to be that at the touch of a cat, they start to get hot and burn and eventually light on fire.

Wilson

Yeah, and I'm also confused because they're they're like creature forms kind of look like cats.

Captain

So like Yeah, I thought they were so when I first read about this movie briefly, I thought they were just werewolves. But then these were like alien, almost like half cat, almost like hippo. What I don't know what, and like again, maybe we would we could handle it if we got any kind of background. Anything like you just get dropped in this town when the movie starts, and like you're like just along for a ride. I don't know, it's so strange.

Wilson

Yeah. So um, you know, he r he races back home. Um he's down bad.

Captain

He's real hurt.

Wilson

Yeah, his mom's like, I'm gonna try to save you. So she this whole time is could could not or did not leave the house, but now she's gonna leave the house because he's down bad, and she needs to get the virgin girl.

Captain

Um to save him, because I guess if he doesn't eat soon, he'll just also die. So they both need to eat.

Home Invasion And Final Showdown

Wilson

Yeah, so she goes to um Tanya's house where she's being safeguarded by her like a couple.

Captain

Well, before that, we meet Ron Perlman's character briefly, where he's a cop that's I guess in the next town over or something, because they call him back up. Um, and you know, he whatever. They they basically bang the door down and try to find them in the house, but they're dimming, so you you can't see them. Um but as she as she uh oh no, it's no, it's when she's leaving Tanya's house. I think that she like crumples Ron Pearlman into bits, but but anyway, we meet Ron Pearlman in this in this scene of them like banging the door down. And he's like so young. Like, look at him.

Wilson

Yeah. Um so she basically just shows up at Tanya's house with roses, attacks her dad, uh, kills the one inept cop by stabbing him in the back with a cob of corn.

Captain

Um it's a is it a cob or an ear? What's it called when it's eaten? A cob I guess a cob?

Wilson

I mean, are they not? I feel like they're the same thing. An ear, a cop, I don't know.

Captain

Well, that sharp cob of corn boiled cob of corn. Yes, uh, stabs him in the back with it. Horace, the cop's name.

Wilson

Yes. Um, so the dad's like down and out, the mom gets thrown out a window. Nobody really cares about her because the Tanya comes downstairs and it's like she just asks about her dad, basically.

Captain

Um Yeah, women don't matter in the 90s.

Wilson

Yeah, apparently.

Captain

Um so like some more cops show This scene, sorry, just like the scene of them like throwing the mom out of the window and like all of this like slight action is like peak, like it reminds me of that wheel the lady in the wheelchair video that you like.

Wilson

Oh, from Children of the Corn, I think.

Captain

Oh yeah, yeah, like this just like peak over dramatic. Like she gets thrown out of a window, but it's the first floor, and she's like it's the first floor window. Like she's like, she's like screaming like she's falling from a 10th-story building. I don't know. It's just it's like very dramatic. I mean uh it's just like over it's like over the top. It was pretty funny. I was laughing, that's all.

Wilson

Um so some more cops show up, and the uh I don't even know what what's uh Mary, the the sleepwalker mom, she just is dragging Tanya out by her hair. Um uh the mom, the sleepwalker mom, Mary, gets a police officer's gun, shoots the police cars like once, and they explode. Like of course, yeah. Um I don't know if you noticed here, but I'm pretty sure they were filming on that famous street in was it Paramount Studios or whatever? Wis like uh where they film like Desperate Housewives and like a bunch of other Oh, Mysteria Lane. Yeah, I recognize some of the houses. Um but anyway, so she like steals Tanya and they drive back to um and she she crumples Ron Perl, like Ron Permanent approaches her.

Captain

What is she? He bite like four of his fingers off and then like like pulls his arm back and his like bones pop out. Like he crumples like a little, I don't know, like a little muffin, and then I don't know. He just like falls he just like falls apart and then yeah, and then she just keeps going. But I just thought it was funny. Like I for how ridiculous Ms. Navy is and for how like incest is happening, and I don't know what the what's going on, but like the special effects were mostly there.

Wilson

Yeah, I mean, yeah, it wasn't bad. Even the soul, like the CGI of the soul, even the body, like it wasn't terrible.

Captain

It wasn't terrible, but they like they put a lot into the costuming of those alien cats. And like Ron Pearlman's bones popping out and like that car changing colors.

Wilson

Like they did put a lot of effort into the effects on like the dimming were actually pretty cool. Yeah. Um they drive to um back to the sleepwalker house. Yeah.

Captain

Yeah, to Charlie, who's she wants to save him so badly that they like bust the car through the house to get him at this scene?

Wilson

So there are like tons of cats sitting in the front yard. I thought that she was gonna drive over all of them, and I was like, alright.

Captain

I don't know what's going on. I don't know. We don't see a run over cat, but um she basically wants Tanya to get to Charlie as close and as fast as possible. So she like runs and she like jam, I don't know, throws the car into the house and Char Charlie's dead.

Wilson

So Well, yeah, this part I'm confused about because she's like he's dead, but then is the mom like transferring some of her like soul to him because she just like brings him back?

Captain

Yeah, she basically like uses her alien power to like get him get his carp get his corpse off the couch and like lumber around. Like she was like dance with him, and it's like okay, but we are doing a Ferris Buller's Day Off thing here. We're we're we're just a body that's that you're like throwing around. Like he like he like his arm he's not alive anyway, but I guess getting him moving off the couch um and like Tanya screaming, it's like gives him enough power that he can try to start sucking her life out again.

Wilson

Well, she stabs him in the other eye. Um and that basically an eye this time. Yeah, and that basically like just does it. He's like done there. Um because he doesn't get up after that. I think another cat jumps on the mom.

Captain

Yeah, there's like basically like a long fight scene at the end where Tanya and the sheriff show up and they're like fighting them together, but there's but honestly, nobody does any real damage except the cats. Like all the cats are like, it's our chance.

Wilson

Well, she snaps a couple cat necks, but yes.

Captain

Bruh, it is so intense. And I I'll have you note that Stephen King is an avid cat lover, according to the internet.

Wilson

I mean, I guess the cats are the heroes in this movie. There's just so much cat death.

Captain

Mutilation prior to yeah. But there's like a hundred cats in their front yard, and so eventually in this fight scene, the cats like jump on the two sleepwalkers um and attack them and save Tanya. The sheriff doesn't get saved, he gets like thrown on a fence post.

Wilson

So like he's done. Yeah.

Captain

He's done. But uh Tanya gets saved, and like the cats jump on the two until they basically burn up into a flaming ball of fire.

Wilson

Well, I don't think we ever saw Charlie's body get burned into a fire. I mean, we're told he's dead. He's probably dead, but I think they just jumped on the mom.

Captain

Oh, I thought Charlie was in there too, but I I guess I kind of looked away for a little.

Wilson

I think he was still on the ground inside. Uh but yeah, she's in flames and she's like, You killed my son, but also's like, You tried to kill me, so um yeah, and the movie basically ends right there.

Captain

Yeah, the movie ends with Tanya being like, Thanks, Clovis.

Wilson

Yeah, well, I guess now they're best friends. And Clovis didn't die like I thought he would.

Captain

I know you were you jumped on that so fast, and I was like, that's the only cat that didn't die. It's like the only cat that was unharmed. And then Stephen King has pictures, I guess, behind the scenes of him with Clovis.

Wilson

Yeah. Well, so I'm surprised there was no epilogue, like, oh look, uh, Charlie got away, or but whatever. I'm fine with the ending.

Ratings Best Effects And Hot Goss

Captain

I I I I'm gonna I didn't need to watch this movie. I'm so sorry.

Wilson

Yeah, you know, I I did I did not like it, and I think Finn was gone for like maybe half an hour of it, but he liked what he saw, so I I don't know.

Captain

What scene did he not? I mean I I I don't know. I I there's nothing here for me, I'm gonna be honest. No, the only positive is the special effects.

Wilson

Yeah. Yeah. I'll just while we're on that topic, I'll say my raise of glass is the car reappearing into a a Mustang. Like I just thought that effect was like kind of cool.

Captain

Yeah, I I mean, yeah, I don't have a I mean that one was pretty cool, but like yeah, like the special effects would only be my rag because they actually seem to spend a lot of time on that. Like they they do like cat faces, half cat faces, like 80% alien cat face. Like, there's a lot of different changes they do with the makeup of the creature. So like I'm like, I'm sure that took time. And then they do the full-body alien cat hippo thing that's like you know, a full suit head to toe. So I'm sure that wasn't easy. Um but it's very the whole thing's very bizarre.

Wilson

I don't know what's going on.

Captain

Um, there was one jump scare that got me when Charlie uh pops up behind the cop um attacking Tanya like outside the cemetery. So there's one jump scare. But I I I yeah. Most of this movie is just a big yuck.

Wilson

Um yeah.

Captain

So what what we see two we have one imp impli implied incest sex scene, and then there's one like where they're uh humans but in the mirror, they're like goopy alien cat things.

Wilson

And it's a lot of sex scenes. Ugh. There is a hot gos I saw about that, or not really, but I don't see it necessarily in what you put in here, but um it sounded like Stephen King really wanted Mark Garrett to direct this, and maybe because Mark Garrett one of his other movies I'm forgetting centered around like a mother-son relationship, and like I think he added the sex scene, like that wasn't in Stephen King's original draft for the movie, and I'm like, ugh, like you went out of your way to add that.

Captain

Yeah, I don't know anything about that. I I the only there's only one potential thing theory I saw online, which is essentially there they make up there they they have a short conversation about how Charlie doesn't think there's any sleepwalkers left on the planet. Like if he thinks it's just him and his mom. And if they are more animal-like and not human, there are plenty of animals that will have offspring with their offspring. So, like, if they are like cats or other small animals, like that is something animals do. Um which like, you know, especially if you're like a dying species. Um I don't think that really saves the movie, but that is like one that is like technically a theory I saw online that was like someone was like, that's like you could make an argument about that.

Wilson

I and again, I'm sure maybe that's explained very well in this book that doesn't exist.

Captain

But yeah, it's not in here. It's there's nothing there's nothing in this movie. Um what is the hot guy? Or like numnums or hakose or what do we got?

Wilson

Um, yeah, so let's see. Um well this was was uh was the first film we talked about this earlier a little bit, the first film written by Stephen King to not be based on something that was pre-existing. Um this other one, I think you were alluding to this earlier, but the director wanted to do a bunch of cameos from other directors who made Stephen King adaptations.

Captain

Um the idea of it's kind of fun, yeah.

Wilson

Uh I appreciate the idea. Um John Ker Carpenter, I think he wanted him, but he was too busy to do one. George Romero was sick at the time. Um yeah, but I mean we got those four others, so Yeah. I think that was pretty good. Um because of the movie's violence and sexuality, um, this had to be submitted five times before the MPAA would uh award an um an R rating, which doesn't surprise me. I feel like it's worse than R because of all the like animal cruelty and incest.

Captain

Like Yeah. I feel like most movies that were like R back in the 80s and 90s would be like PG 13 out, but like this is one of the outliers where I'd be like, no, no, put this shit on X. I don't know.

Wilson

Yeah, yeah. Um so it looks like they cut some um or heavily altered scenes to make them less violent. Um, like the scene where the Sleepwalker Mom bites off Ron Prolman's.

Captain

Yeah, there was also a violent scene where they're where they heavily altered how much Tanya stabs Charles with the corkscrew. Okay, yeah. Because I guess she ha she was supposed to have like a lot of tissue, I guess, left over on the corkscrew, but I don't think they uh it's like there's a scene where she like looks at it, but there's like not a lot there, and I think it's because they altered it, because I think there was like supposed to be a lot of like like a whole eyeball left on there or something.

Wilson

Okay. And I also see there there was like a more explicit sex scene originally filmed, and they had to cut it to avoid an X-rating.

Captain

Good. Ugh. Cut more. Uh look at this, um, look at this creepy screenshot someone took of the movie. Oh gosh. Ugh.

Wilson

Yeah, like that. Uh and then I also see it looks like in April of 2020, um uh Garrus confirmed that there was a discussion with Columbia Pictures about a sequel, like a a little bit of talk about it, um, because the movie did do well the week that it came out. Um and it it sounds like that Stephen King's wife, Tabitha, actually wrote um a little bit for a sequel um that somehow involved a woman's basketball team. Um, but I guess Stephen King was also very excited about it, especially that his his wife came up with it. Um but I guess the studio didn't didn't really care, so it's a good one. Yeah, this is funny.

Captain

This is a this is a quote from him, his interview. Yeah, but he's yeah, but the sequel that nobody at the studio gave a shit about. So yeah, I think we had it didn't go over the numnums yet, but yeah, the movie actually did fairly well, like money-wise, but it it wasn't you know, it wasn't prestigious, really.

Wilson

So I'll yeah, it looks like they maybe broke even. I see a budget of the 15 million in the box office 30.5.

Captain

So okay, so yeah, just about even, yeah.

Wilson

Interesting. It looks like the audience and critic kind of thought the same. Um 33, 32. Yep. DG That's generous.

Captain

I feel like that's generous.

Wilson

Yeah. Yeah. Like, hmm.

Captain

I I just like it's not the worst movie you've ever seen, but I just feel like we got thrown into a coked up drug induced dream for 90 minutes that like I don't know for what. I where are we going?

Wilson

Yeah, because I I feel like this movie was like it didn't know if it wanted to be more serious or goofy, and it somehow ended up like in the middle.

Captain

Mm-hmm. Yeah, like the cop, the the cop with Clovis has like those scenes are so goofy with him like singing and the corner talking to Clovis. Murder.

Wilson

Yeah.

Captain

Like murder. Murder. Yeah, it's very campy, but then some scenes you're like, I don't think it's supposed to be campy. Yeah.

Wilson

Let's see if there's any I think that was if I had to rate this movie.

Captain

Okay, so my Rag's the special effects. And if I had to rate this movie, I think I'd get a I would give this like a like a 22.

Wilson

Okay. Um Yeah, I would say mine's probably in the 20s also. Like I don't I don't know what percent, 20 something.

Captain

But oh wow, you already put this on letterbox.

Wilson

I just did. Um I gave it a one point one and a half stars. Um the average on letterbox is 2.8.

Captain

Damn, I feel like one and a half is good. That's what I'm gonna do. Never watch again.

Wilson

Probably not. Probably not. I don't know, man. That I mean, it wasn't a waste of time, and I think we've watched worse movies, but I I just didn't like it. And it does sound like there's a fall, like a lot of people really like it.

Captain

Um there's so much online about it, like I feel like it comes up in discussions with it a lot because it's it's like the most of the time it's people being like, um, the fuck did I just watch? Or like the the fuck did I just read? Like, what is going on?

Stephen King Cocaine Era Sidebar

Captain

Um has Stephen Kings never written like an autobiographical or something, right? Like about his life.

Wilson

I don't know.

Captain

Maybe that would come out like later. But um, yeah.

Wilson

And he'd like detail some of this stuff, like that's where the lore came from.

Captain

I want to know about the drugs. Like how where what how long, how much were we doing, how much of this writing was like stone cold sober? Like, did you feel like you needed the drugs? As he's gotten older, his nose is does seem to have like some nostril shrinkage, you know, that happens.

Wilson

Really uh interested about his face.

Captain

Well, no, but you know how that happens when people do like a lot of coke, like their nostrils disappear. You know what I'm talking about?

Wilson

I guess I didn't know that as a thing or I forgot. I don't know.

Captain

Yeah, it's like a thing that happens with people that do like a lot of snorting. It's like it destroys their septum or whatever that thing is.

Wilson

Oh, I did hear about it, it destroys your nose.

Captain

I just never really thought about yeah, like yeah, and if you do it for like a long time, like you're basically like your cartilage like collapses, like your nose basically like disappears. That's uh yikes for me. I mean he's not at that point, but I will say his nose does seem very small.

Wilson

I don't think he's done coke in a very long time. Oh I feel like he like stopped like a while ago. Also, he's pretty I'm pretty sure he's he's pretty old at this point, and like cocaine could kill him. He's 78.

Captain

Yeah, like dude, he did cocaine for like they said like about a decade.

Wilson

Damn.

Captain

Terrible, terrible for your health. Um he said he he said he has revealed in interviews before that he barely remembers co uh Cujo. Like basically at all. And during this period he wrote The Shining and Tommy Knockers and It.

Wilson

Okay. I think I'd heard that about it. I haven't read Tommy Knockers or Cujo.

Captain

People say Tommy Knockers is one of his worst ever.

Wilson

I just finished one of his books a couple weeks ago.

Captain

So it's Misery is a direct metaphor of his addiction, he said. I like that movie, actually. That was a good movie.

Wilson

Did you read the book too?

Captain

No.

Wilson

It's really good.

Captain

Is it like super duper long?

Wilson

I think that's one of his shorter books, honestly.

Captain

Oh okay. Well, anyway, um Jesus Christ. Sorry, I'm reading there's a I guess this is like a website about getting into rehab, but it talks about Stephen King, and he said that like he was introduced to cocaine in like these big Hollywood parties. It says like in some of these cocaine-induced nights, he would pen like 600 pages.

Wilson

Jesus.

Captain

Yeah. I'm like, sure. Sure. Anyway, um, um I don't I yeah, I don't have much else to say. Um, but I do want to say before we jump off about what we're doing next week, unless you had anything else.

Wilson

No, no, go for

Next Week Pick And Closing Advice

Wilson

go for it.

Captain

Next week we're doing um Bring Her Back, which um is a movie about occult. Um, yeah, orphans. That's fine. Orphans that have to deal with the occult um from 2025. So in the same stratosphere atmosphere as what was that called? Talk to me.

Wilson

Yeah.

Captain

Yeah.

Wilson

It's like the same brother duo or whatever, I think, that created it.

Captain

Yeah. They said technically the movies are mildly, and this is so mildly related, but he said they've said that the movies, um, the location took place in the universe. They're both in the same universe and they took place in the same street. Oh. Like the house.

Wilson

Okay.

Captain

Yeah. We're still in again now. It's all there. Um, but yes, that's what we're doing next week. Do you have any advice for me based on this movie? There is some advice based on Stephen King in general that we've learned. Don't do cocaine. Um do cocaine. But is there any advice you have for me based on this movie and the cats and the aliens?

Wilson

I mean, I feel like there's so much. There's like avoid like don't be friends with somebody that like has that like creepy relationship with their parent.

Captain

Report it, yeah.

Wilson

Like don't eviscerate cats.

Captain

Don't hang out in a cemetery. All of the above.
