Snacks, S’mores, And Graham Cracker Shade
CaptainHow how is it?
WilsonJust it? Like it's good.
CaptainHow's the stuff? The stuff.
WilsonUh well, we'll get to that later. You don't have to wait.
CaptainYou got a tasty treat?
WilsonYou know, I wish we watched that movie and I was like, I really want like cool whip.
CaptainYou had your s'mores. You had your s'mores. Well, that is true.
WilsonI did have my like marshmallow.
CaptainYeah. S'mores sounds really good, by the way. Like I didn't want to say anything, but I was like, you might have to be arrested for not getting me one.
WilsonWell, if it makes you feel any better, I got like um graham crackers from Aldi. Not okay, no shade against Aldi, but some things are like hit or miss. Big shade. Big shade. But like they're just not the graham crackers aren't right.
CaptainThey're just they taste like the grody expired ones, like stale ones.
WilsonThey kind of just taste like crackers with like a little bit of brown sugar. Oh, that's worse. Like, yeah, it's like That's worse than expired. They are trying to be graham crackers.
CaptainOh my god. That's so much somehow that's oh man, that's like makes me nauseous. That's disgusting. Crackers should never be like just a hint of hint of gram on them and be like, they're graham crackers.
WilsonYeah. But overall, I mean, you know, it has the marshmallow. Has it has like uh jet puff, whatever that brand is, marshmallows and then Hershey's chocolate. So like otherwise, it was correct.
CaptainI have no supplies makes more. So now, do I live dangerously close to a 24-hour and I saw how close you meant dangerously close to convenience tour seven twenty-four-seven. Yeah, it's it's not good.
WilsonLike we have one that's like I think a five-minute walk.
CaptainSo like I could crawl over.
WilsonYeah, I you could like basically see it from your head.
CaptainYeah, yeah. So yeah, not good. I mean great, but also good, but great, not good. Not good. Um luckily there's always a cop there's like almost always a cop car posted there like late at night. So I also feels like not dangerous to be there.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainYeah, there's like almost always a cop car there in the parking lot. It's one of the few places in this neighborhood that actually like it might be like the only place, oh, besides like Safeway that has like an actual parking lot um in this neighborhood.
WilsonSo I think it's also Sorry, go ahead.
CaptainI was just gonna say, like, if a cop needs to respond to something in the neighborhood, it's also like a good place to put the cop car. Um what were you gonna say?
WilsonOh, is it is how what are the hours for that 7-Eleven?
CaptainFor that convenience store or the it's it's 24, Wilson.
WilsonIt's really oh damn.
CaptainIt's motherfucking 24.
WilsonI would abuse the shit out of that.
CaptainI we have, but it's not good. They sell Ben and Cherries, sir. I've eaten so much Ben and Cherries. Like, it's a problem. It is I'm unwell.
WilsonI just got some Ben and Cherries the other day. It was pretty good.
CaptainIt's so good. But it's a problem. Luckily, I found one that I really like that they don't sell there. No, I'm wrong. I found another one that I like even better and they do sell it there.
WilsonSo, what are the two that you like really well?
CaptainOkay, there's a new one that's called something Vermonster. Okay. So good. It's like just a vanilla with like all the chocolatey chips and things stuffed in it. And it's like one of their like it's called like Sun their Sunday version. So it's like has all these like toppings on it, and then but you like mix them in basically.
WilsonOh, that sounds good. Okay, yep, yep.
CaptainSo good. And then the other one I like that they don't sell there is chocolate therapy, which is just like death by death by chocolate.
WilsonOh I would love that. I haven't had it. Yeah, you get fish food.
CaptainYes, I used to get fish food. Fish food was my favorite for a long time, and then I recently fell, stumbled upon chocolate therapy, and I was like, that's the that's the prescription. Yes. Um and um but yeah, also Vermonster is really good. I think there's a word before Vermonster. I don't know. I think there's something else, and then it's like something Vermonster. But if you see it, recommend. Um Yeah. Jason to all of the like cheesecake ones, which are fine, but I don't know. For some reason, I if I'm if I'm getting some of the cheesecake flavor, I just want cheesecake. Like I don't want an ice cream flavored cheesecake, you know?
WilsonThat is true. Yeah, like I don't normally get cheesecake flavored ice cream because I'm like I love cheesecake.
CaptainRight. I'd rather just have cheesecake. Like, I don't want like the flavored version of yeah.
WilsonYeah, but if somebody put it in front of me, I'd be like, I mean I mean it's right here.
CaptainIt's goofy, but in a bowl. I mean Yeah. Yeah. Um it's a problem having a 24-7. Why are we talking about the convenience store? Oh, s'mores. Yeah.
WilsonRight, yeah.
CaptainOh, the stuff, yeah.
WilsonYeah, okay, we linked it back. Um yeah.
CaptainYeah, but
TV Catch-Up And Prestige Thriller Nostalgia
Captainone other okay, sorry, before we get into the movie, where are we at? Okay, six minutes. Um before we get into the um we did both finish for all mankind with Joel Kinneman, of course. Um this season, best part was that they reunited Joel and Miranda or whatever her name is.
WilsonOh, um I don't know how I don't understand the spelling. I want to say like Miriel Enos.
CaptainOh, Miriel, that's probably it. Yeah.
WilsonBut I I need to look at the name again. But yes, from the killing.
CaptainThe killing. The killing, yeah, yeah. Um the spelling.
WilsonThat's like one of the that show I like when I think about that show, I think of you. Because I I don't I don't know what the timing was, but we like watched it either together or around the same time.
CaptainIt's good.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainI I kind of want to re- rewatch it. It is Marielle, you're right. Uh Marielle Enos. Um yeah, I kind of really do want to rewatch it.
WilsonIt has four seasons, I think, so Yeah, is that at the time it was on Netflix, I think. I wonder if it still is there.
CaptainNo, it says it's on Hulu. Um and then obviously with Disney too, because those are the same company.
WilsonHow can you even keep up these days?
CaptainBut I don't know. That's what Goog says.
WilsonLet me I'm checking Hulu right now. Damn. Oh, it is there. Oh, it's on my list. Okay, so I do also want to rewatch that.
CaptainYeah, when I think of the killing, I also think of that show that Jillian Anderson Wait, was it Julian Anderson?
WilsonThe Fall.
CaptainThe Fall. Because similar name, similar premise. Wow, you pulled that out out quick.
WilsonWell, Jillian Anderson, like cr cr I mean, the fall's amazing. Um, there was another show with um unless I'm thinking of the killing, but there was uh serial killer cult leader.
CaptainNot Aaron Paul.
WilsonNo.
CaptainI mean, well not serial killer, but he was the cult leader for the path.
WilsonOh, no, it wasn't that. It was like I It was a show. Yeah. And I'll have to try to figure out what that was.
CaptainOkay, are you ready for this? There's another show that makes me think of when I th The Killing and The Fall, and there's another show called The Following, which was That's what I'm thinking of. Oh, with Kevin Bacon.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainOh, yeah. Cult Leader.
WilsonOr I don't know. I just I remembered like, I mean, is that not what it's about with the following?
CaptainCult leader?
WilsonThat's I mean, like, what else would be the fall? I don't know. I mean, I could be wrong. It's been a long time since I watched this show, but that is the show I was thinking of.
CaptainWow, that's so funny. Um, I I don't think I don't remember Colt. It says a former FBI agent, this physical and emotional scars. Sorry, my computer's staying, I gotta plug this thing in. Um, says he apprehended a notorious serial killer years earlier that escapes death row, and then oh, yeah, there is a cult thing, yeah. They learned that somebody was collecting time gathering collection of cult like followers. Yeah, you're right. There's a cult, yeah.
WilsonSo you're about to have me re-watch like all three of these like Teens 2000s, like you know, prime shows.
CaptainThese were good. I loved all three of these shows. If there was a letterbox for TV shows, like these one of these would be up there on my top four, I think.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainIt'd be tough because X Files immediately goes up there.
WilsonThat's true. I do want to rewatch that soon, but that is such an undertaking.
CaptainI've in full adulthood, I've rewatched the whole thing twice already.
WilsonOh, I don't think I did this, I did it like right after college. That was it.
CaptainYeah, this was like years after college. I've already done it.
WilsonHell yeah.
CaptainUh X-Files goes up there. I think we've talked about this. Uh I think Lost would have to go up there.
WilsonI think um a Mike Flanagan would go up there. I don't know which one.
CaptainIt would have to rotate. I mean, I I don't know. It's a tough one. Uh but yeah. That's funny. Um okay.
WilsonBut yeah, so uh From the Killing. For All Mankind. Sorry. Yeah. So like From the Killing, Joel Kinneman and Mirriel Inos. Uh she is I I guess a guest star or whatever in this season five of For All Mankind. I realized they didn't have a single scene together, I don't think.
CaptainThere's a brief scene where they do talk, very, very brief. But I did catch it because I was like, I was waiting. I was like, they're building it up. There's a very small scene where they they do talk.
WilsonOkay. Um what'd you think about this season?
CaptainYeah, like I said, I I didn't mind I I liked the ending a lot. I liked I liked the Kelly seeing life at the end, like that was very rewarding. Um, but I agree with you that like they've killed off every character that you could possibly care about. Um at a certain point they get so old that it's like you know, what can you do with them? But they are setting up another season that's gonna be like um Kelly's kid and Miles' kid and um The Stevens girl. Yes, the Stevens kid. And I'm just like I don't I don't feel any type of way. I mean Kelly's Alex is like the only one that I would like maybe care about. Like, but those are gonna be the main characters, I assume.
WilsonProbably I do hope I'm holding on to hope Margot comes back, but um out of prison for treason or whatever. I mean, at that point it would have been like 30 years she's in jail. She's like super old. Um yeah, obviously I'm gonna watch the this next and final season, but uh I just I don't know. I'm already like exhausted thinking about the like Stevens Baldwin drama, like that whatever that triangle will end up being.
CaptainYeah.
WilsonMaybe it'll be really good.
CaptainYou know, watching this season made me really, I mean, just fucking despise Dev. I was like, what a billionaire piece of trash that's just held up in this room, basically had a big part to play in this war that started on Mars, hides in a room, doesn't want to help anybody, has security or cops working for him, going out of their way to like steal supplies so they can use them instead of like the 80% of the rest of the population on here. I'm like, Jesus fucking Christ, evil person.
WilsonYeah. Earlier on the season, I was like, oh, well, he's smart, he has something up his sleeve that's gonna end up being like good. Like somebody on Reddit was like, well, I think they were speculating maybe he released the confidential files because he wants to force their hand to get that city built.
CaptainYeah, I thought I thought they weren't teasing, like, okay, maybe he'll do something that will alleviate. Just bad stuff. Yeah. Just bad stuff. Just bad stuff. I'm just like, Jesus Christ. I mean, yeah, evil. Um I'm hoping that's what they were expecting the audience to feel, because I don't feel any type of way about him except that. Um I guess he'll be in the next season though. I can't imagine them killing him off.
WilsonProbably. He'll be like rolling around in like a high-tech wheelchair or something.
CaptainLike, oh, they did have him do the hold the um the sc scanner up so they could talk to the they get signal back. That's not good enough. I'm sorry. That's not like I forgive you.
WilsonIt wasn't redemption or anything. No. Um yeah, and he actually got that girl killed.
CaptainYeah.
WilsonI mean, it seemed like he did feel bad about it, but like not bad enough that you know, he was like Did something amazing.
CaptainHe like started a I mean, I don't know what you do on Mars anyway.
WilsonWhat a ridiculous place to try to live, but just like actively destroying a source of food no matter who gets it.
CaptainI know. I'm like, what the fuck? Um yeah, just terrible. Um and they are hinting at the very end, they were hinting that Miles' daughter might because she knows now that Miles secretly didn't he wasn't brave during that last thing that everybody praises him for.
WilsonUm I think they're blowing that out of proportion, by the way.
CaptainThey are, and and I I love Miles and I he also went hardcore this time. He was like, I'm not gonna get fucked over like I did back into like 2001 or whatever, where I basically get forced into a corner where I have to like um you know rot people out. But so like he went in this season, like he he pushed that. I think he's more likable this season, yeah. Um, and like I said, I just I he was I just I left him from Servant, and then he came to this show and I was like, that's my dude. Um his character in Servant is called Sean, and like the entire time I'm watching this show, Jay's calling him Sean. I'm like, his name's Miles in this show, but whatever. Um yeah, so I don't know. I I don't know if they're gonna hint at her like telling on her dad. I really hope not.
WilsonUm it's gonna cause come out somehow and cause like a fuss.
CaptainI don't want that.
WilsonCan we like some of these plot lines I don't need to I don't need to see the end of that?
CaptainYeah, and then I the they said the next season's gonna be in the 2020s, I'm like, there's not I mean, where are we? We're we're up to to time. To current time. I that is gonna be the last season.
WilsonI think I did see it's their yeah, sixth and final.
CaptainOkay. Oh, and you haven't watched From It All, right?
WilsonUh I haven't. I think I'm in like in the middle of season three.
CaptainOkay. Because the season that's currently airing, they've had like their highest rated episode of all the entire show.
WilsonDamn. Reddit does kind of rave about that show. I just I think I'm gonna wait till everything's out and I'll just go through it.
CaptainThat and um how I don't know what we talked about on the podcast, but Widow's Bay is also really, really good.
WilsonI did hear that's really good. It's on my list. I almost started.
CaptainYou're waiting until it all comes.
WilsonNo, I just feel like I mean a new season of Grays just came out on Netflix, so like I Gray's Anatomy? Yeah. That's like my every watching season four.
CaptainJesus. So every I thought it was gonna be more than that.
WilsonEvery summer they dump the full season on Netflix in June. I binge it within a week. So good. And then I wait a full year. I It's my guilty pleasure.
CaptainThere cannot be what else could they be doing in that show they haven't done the first 20 seasons? Like, are there really new things that they're having happen at the hospital?
WilsonI mean, since you've last seen it, yes.
CaptainAre there any of the original characters in it? Any of them?
WilsonYeah.
CaptainReally?
WilsonYeah, Meredith's in there most of the time. Uh Dr. Weber's there.
CaptainLet that woman breathe. Jesus Christ.
WilsonWell, I think she tried to leave the show and then she's like, just kidding, I'm coming back. Yeah, it's fine.
CaptainUm Is Meredith's little sister in the show? Because I remember she was in there a long time ago.
WilsonUm, she's dead. She's been dead for a long time. Ah!
CaptainSpoiler alert!
WilsonI'm it's like season like, I don't know, eight or something, I think. Wait, I think it was pre-Darek dying. Yeah. Uh I mean, there's a decent number of main casts still left, but two of them just left the season. I haven't seen it yet. But uh the the a redheaded uh trauma doctor, if you remember him. Owen Hunt.
CaptainI don't know.
WilsonOh, well there's still a decent number of main casts.
CaptainIs what's it Nick Steamy? Is that the guy? Did he die? He's sick or he died.
WilsonHe died, I think, when Lexi died? Oh maybe not.
CaptainNo, but I mean in real life.
WilsonOh, yeah.
CaptainUm ALS, right?
WilsonYes. Uh I know his name.
CaptainBut is he is he struggling with ALS or ALS took him? Like, is he actually is he alive?
WilsonLike right now, no, he passed away like two months ago or something. Okay, I was gonna say Eric Dane. That's what it is.
CaptainEric Dane. Yeah, February. Okay. From ALS, right?
WilsonYeah.
CaptainYeah. I thought we made a lot of progress with that ALS um challenge. Icebucket challenge.
WilsonNo idea.
CaptainAnyway. Um, so yeah, sorry, he wasn't on the show then.
WilsonYeah, he's been long gone. Okay. He died in a plane crash.
CaptainDamn! Nothing's gonna be as for me, nothing was gonna be as shocking as George.
WilsonI mean Yeah, that's true. I mean I mean, that was good. I mean, it's pretty shocking when Derek died.
CaptainSpoiler alert again. I can't believe Meredith's on that show. What's um her best friend, um um, what's her name?
WilsonUm, Sandra O.
CaptainSandra O. But what's her character's name? Miranda, no.
WilsonUm Christina.
CaptainChristina, she's not on the show. Hasn't been for a while.
WilsonShe's left she's left for a long time. Let me guess.
CaptainShe's dead.
WilsonNo, she's in another country we working in a heart lab or something.
CaptainShe never cameos?
WilsonI don't think she has.
CaptainOh. Maybe for the final episode reunion.
WilsonYeah. Well, the weird thing is I think in 2020 during COVID, when I think they thought the show was gonna end. They like Meredith was like kind of dying. They did a dream sequence of with like a bunch of old cast. Oh, they were. This feels like finale shit.
CaptainYeah, that's prep, yeah. And then they just brought it back.
WilsonMm-hmm.
CaptainIt just got renewed again, too, so Wikipedia says there's still no cure for ALS. I I swear I remember reading like the Icebacker Challenge raised enough money that it actually like initiated a bunch of new potential treatments.
WilsonI mean it's it maybe did, but like those treatments would take forever to get approved.
CaptainOh, I know. Yeah. Um Yeah, I mean, when was that? That was over ten years ago, though, right?
WilsonYeah, I think it was right after college.
Captain2015.
WilsonOr it could have been in part of 16. I don't know.
CaptainEw. Um Yes. Ten years would be about the time in which like marketable drugs to come on the but they would have to like go through they'd actually have to work through multiple stages before the drugs would have to be effective through multiple stages for them to I mean, it's just there's like some genetically targeted therapies available, but I think it really does depend on like how far along you are and your genes.
WilsonIt seems like Eric Dane's esc like progressed very quickly. Yeah. 'Cause I feel like he was diagnosed and then it didn't seem like that long until he was just like Yeah.
CaptainSome people also like hate going to the doctor, so like if you don't get diagnosed until you're like super far along, it's like okay, well uh there's not much you can do, you know?
WilsonMm-hmm.
CaptainSo um anyway. Well on that note Yeah, so for all mankind, I don't I didn't mind it. You didn't seem to like it that much.
WilsonUm I I did, I just had hopes.
CaptainMore hopes. You're like really uh fighting for Margo to come back here and she's had such a terrible life. Yeah. Oh, and I haven't started the other I at one point I do want to watch the other show.
WilsonStar City.
CaptainYeah, but we haven't started it. Eventually.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm, it has really good reviews. Uh anyway. Sorry. Where are we? We should just jump in here. Yeah, just get in here.
WilsonGet on it. Pop on.
Welcome And The Stuff Basics
WilsonAlright, so welcome to the 195th episode of the Red Run Podcast, where we review horror movies while enjoying an adult beverage or two.
CaptainAnd I'm Captain.
WilsonAnd I'm Wilson. And this week we're reviewing the 1985 American science fiction horror film The Stuff. I do believe this is a cult classic.
CaptainOh. S C C.
WilsonSEC. Um C. Uh, so this was written and directed by Larry Cohen. Um you might also know him from It's Alive, uh God Told Me To. You know him from this movie. Um guess he also did Return of Salems a lot.
CaptainYeah. That would have been well that would have been yeah, that's after the stuff. So yeah.
WilsonI don't think I saw It's Alive.
CaptainI think it's also an 80s goop. Or actually a 70s goop.
WilsonOh, that's running into like terrible FX territory.
CaptainYeah.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainHe had a lot to say about this movie, but it's all in the um hot goose for later.
WilsonOoh. I'm excited. Okay. Um, so that's the director, Larry Cohen. Um, this movie stars Michael Moriarty as David or Mo Rutherford. Um, I had to look this up. I couldn't tell in the movie if he was like his late twenties or like much older.
CaptainBruh.
WilsonHe was 44 when they filmed that.
CaptainBruh, he could have been any age. The way they have that man dress and where whatever that hairline is going on, that man could have been anywhere.
WilsonYeah. Yeah. Um so he uh he has an Emmy and a Golden Globe for uh when he played a Nazi officer in um the 1978 miniseries Holocaust.
CaptainUm Tony for something he did on stage, but we mostly know him from Troll.
WilsonOh, okay. I guess that's why it looks familiar. Because I like looked him up and it seemed like he was in a lot of 80s horror, but I didn't remember.
CaptainHe's Aripa Sr. The Dad.
WilsonOh, yes. I was like, are you talking about the real Harry Potter?
CaptainNo, the lawsuit Harry Potter. Um and Troll was episode 186, so that is Michael.
WilsonUm then we have Andrea Markovici as Nicole. Um she did a lot of stuff in the 70s and then just decided she wanted to be a Yeah, she has some discography.
CaptainI couldn't tell you anything about her, basically. Yeah.
WilsonMaybe we we can get her to be the intro for the 200th episode.
CaptainI have no idea what music she makes. I'm I have nothing.
WilsonI guess I could there's a lot of stuff here.
CaptainYeah, but it's like all stuff that do you recognize any of that, Wilson? Any of that?
WilsonUm I recognize the word December.
CaptainOkay. You know what?
WilsonShe has an album called I Am Anne Frank.
CaptainLies.
WilsonI'm sure there's more context to that, but I have concerns.
CaptainUm she is on Spotify.
WilsonWow.
CaptainI mean, her most listened to song has like 22,000 listens.
WilsonAlright, I have to do some research. Alright. Uh then we have Garrett Morris. Um, he plays Charles W. Chocolate Chip Carly. Carly. Charlie Hobbs. Um he was uh he's known for being the first black cast member um on SNL. Uh he's on there for five years, and he was also in the Martin show.
CaptainYeah. I watched a couple episodes of that show, but I I'm not the target audience, so I I I mean it's fine, but there's a lot of like jokes about women. I I don't know.
WilsonUh okay. Um this while I'm talking about the cast, I don't know. There were this is maybe more a dig for later in the movie, but uh there seemed to be a lot of like I don't know if you got this, but like possible racial undertones. I was like, a lot of this.
CaptainYou don't know if I got it.
WilsonWell, no, no, I just feel like if you it's in there, felt the way that I did. Okay.
CaptainYeah. Um, so uh so so I didn't I don't think I wrote this in the hot goose, but uh okay I think the problem the reason why I didn't write this is in there because I don't know shit about this history. But supposedly that character, Chocolate Chip Charlie, is based off of the Amos guy, like famous Amos. Oh, okay. I I the way the character's written, I I I guess Amos had his company like stolen from underneath him or something. I'm not really sure. I can like look it up really fast, but uh I was mentioned a couple of times when I was looking this movie up, and I'm like, okay, something must have happened with like Amos. I'm not really sure. Um my god, it takes forever to get to the actual wiki of that company because they're like, you want to buy some? You can buy it here, here, here. Like, I'm like, no.
WilsonI would eat a cookie, bro.
CaptainBruh, hand it over. Um wow. Wallace Amos like just died in 2024. I don't know. Anyway, I mean I can like look into this while you're talking, but I'm assuming something about his something got stolen. I don't know. So you're saying he's he's like kind of somebody said he's based on multiple like trivia things were like he was based off of that guy.
WilsonHmm. Okay. Um we have Paul Servino, uh, who plays the Colonel uh in this movie, Colonel Spears. Um he was in well, he's known for being in Goodfellas. Um Law and Order. He's in Romeo and Juliet, the Baz Lerman version. Um he's also in Moonlighting. He looks familiar. I don't I didn't know his name, though.
CaptainI'm assuming I only recognize him from Goodfellas because I have seen that, but yeah.
WilsonI have not seen Goodfellas.
CaptainWhat the fuck?
WilsonIt's on my list.
CaptainOkay. Aren't you watching all of like the greatest movies from the last uh here and there. Relosely. Okay.
WilsonIt's just like I want to watch The Godfather, but like, how do I sit down and commit like I don't know, what is it at least?
CaptainYou've never watched any of them?
WilsonNo.
CaptainWow, that's like shocking that you've made it through life this far and haven't watched. That's like very surprising.
WilsonFinn hasn't either.
CaptainThat's kind of crazy.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainOkay.
WilsonWell, in any case, um, and then we also have Scott Bloom who plays Jason. And that's it.
CaptainYeah, so apparently Famous, yeah, so Amos was forced to sell his company in 1988 because he had like financial troubles, even though his cookies like won awards and shit. Um, and like he had to sell it to some distributor. Um yeah, I don't know. It sounds like the company kind of like forced some shit. I don't know.
WilsonOkay, that sounds messy.
CaptainI would um I love those docudramas. I don't know if they make one about this, but it's way easier to consume that information if you can just put it in a docu.
WilsonOh, that's true. As long as it has a good ending. Or at least like, you know, some closure. Um, you know, apparently Patrick Dempsey was in this movie, but What? It was one of his first film roles, and he was just like a background character.
CaptainThat's like so weird that we were just talking about Grace Anatomy.
WilsonHold on, sorry. I need to says he was maybe working in the factory.
CaptainOh. I wouldn't have Everybody's in yellow. I wouldn't have been able to pick him out.
WilsonYeah, he played uh wait, under no, never mind, I was wrong. Underground stuff buyer. Oh, that means he was in the that last scene of the movie. When they were like what?
CaptainHe's one of those two men.
WilsonI think I think that's what that's saying.
CaptainI'm gonna have to go back and watch. Oh, you know what? Wally Amos does have a documentary. Add the list of the greatest the the great cookie comeback. I don't know. Maybe there's a happy ending. Okay, sorry, continue.
Plot Setup: Goop Discovery And A Fixer
WilsonUm yeah, so that's like that's the sum of the cast. Um I guess we can pop in.
CaptainUh you should just preface this by like don't ask a lot of questions. We don't know.
WilsonNo, it's just a silly, goopy, silly goopy monster hive mind 80s movie. Um whatever you want to call that. Uh so this movie starts off just like I was um felt kind of sudden. I don't know. Something about I feel like we just jumped right into the middle of a movie almost.
CaptainThere's there's an old man that's just eating white shit off the ground. Like it literally starts with that, and he's like, mmm, tasty.
WilsonYeah, this bubbling puddle in the ground. Let's try it.
CaptainLike fingers in the puddle in the mouth. What?
WilsonYeah, so it then basically cuts ahead and the stuff is, you know, like packaged and sold everywhere. Yeah, it's like package.
CaptainThat's its marketed name. Yeah.
WilsonYeah. Um, so it's supposed to have like all these health benefits, but it's, you know, you see it in like every every kind of grocery store.
CaptainUm then you get oh, I was gonna say you get introduced to Scott first, the kid, who sees honestly within like the first three minutes of the movie, the stuff moving by itself in the fridge.
WilsonYes. He like went in to get a snack in the middle of the night, yeah. It was like moving the fridge. And then his terrible father comes down, basically threatens him, makes him go back to bed. But obviously the kid's like right off the bat, I don't like whatever this is. Yeah, so then the next scene we uh meet the FBI agent played by uh Michael Moriarty, he's uh David Mo Rutherford. Um he's basically joining a bunch of rich guys on a boat, and you learn that he is uh like a corporate saboteur type thing, and um he's being hired to like go crumble the stuff company. Yeah, because like find out what's in it.
CaptainYeah, because the s guys on the boat I don't I didn't really understand like why. Like they they paid him a bunch of money to go investigate, but like they they are their companies suffering, I guess.
WilsonI I think so. I think they just like the stuff was doing too well. They were like, we want to Okay.
CaptainAnd then why did Mo punch somebody?
WilsonThat part I didn't really uh wasn't really following that because I thought they walked in together, they were friends. Yeah, he just punches him and leaves.
CaptainI was so confused. I was like, did he talk shit about like because apparently Mo like bugged all these guys before meeting them? I was like, did he like the guy he punched? I was like, is that one of the guys he like bugged and he talked shit about him? I was like, I don't know what I missed.
WilsonBut um but this it's kind of like fun listening to this character talk because he does have this southern draw.
CaptainThat like Tennessee Southern draw. I mean, it is he does it very well. I don't know if this man is from that area, but it's a beautiful accent to listen to.
WilsonYeah, it was it was basically a main character itself.
CaptainYeah, in movies. I won't I it's a little different. He's playing like a character that like you know he's saying lines, like he's not just like, you know, I've been to Tennessee, okay. So it's different when you're just like talking to someone trying to like, you know, get information or like order food or whatever. This his his accent is nice though. Sorry, I don't know.
WilsonNo, yeah, I it was yeah, it was just the movie could have been much worse if this was like a bland character.
CaptainYeah. When you're in Tennessee, have you been in Tennessee?
WilsonYes.
CaptainOh. Do you remember like I remember being in Tennessee and like people are literally saying, like, I'll tell you what? Like there's a there's a capital H before the W.
WilsonI don't think I heard it.
CaptainI was like, I was like, I don't what is happening? Uh I was like not prepared for that. But yeah, his is his is a lot more flowy. There's a very there's a big flow.
WilsonIt's like a wealthy southern I don't know. Yeah, so basically you just got paid a bunch of money to go spy on the stuffed company, find what's in it, but also basically make them crumble.
CaptainYeah, so he finds the marketer for the company first. What's her name? Nicole in the movie? Oh yeah, Nicole. Um something about her aesthetic, she's like slaying it. I like can't explain.
WilsonYeah, like that character itself had every reason to be like super like basic. That's not the right word for it, but I don't know. She played that character with like some I don't know, charm.
CaptainYeah, swag, charm. I I don't know, I guess Riz. I hate myself. Um yeah, I don't know. She just like has some she just has a spark, and I'm like, oh, I don't know. Even her outfits, I was like, I I I this is I don't know what's wrong with me. It's like give it is 80s, but I could almost see somebody wearing that now in a weird way, like as a retro look. I don't know.
WilsonYeah, whoever the costume designer was of this movie.
CaptainTime-lapse. Um yeah, so he meets Nicole uh because she's like been the marketer for the stuff, and what does he say? He said he tells her he's like an oil CEO, some rich guy, and he wants to like buy her marketing company. But he really just says that to like get her to talk to him about the stuff, I think, right?
WilsonYeah, like I think right now he's just collecting information.
CaptainYeah. Um and then he also talks to that guy that was an FDA admin and asks him about like the chemistry.
WilsonOh yeah, he because um it's been noted that like everyone at the FDA who approved this either is dead in another country or you know, whatever. Um so he goes to interview the like you're saying, the administrator of the FDA. Uh he seems fairly straightforward while they're talking, but there's some weird relationship with his dog.
CaptainYeah, so he mentions that he was eating the stuff a lot, he doesn't have a problem with it, and he was even giving a bunch to his dog, and then like while they're talking, the dog starts getting agitated. And like beforehand, they were like, you know, he was like, Oh, he's the sweetest dog. And as the dog's getting more and more angry, the guy's like putting more space to him and the dog, because I guess the dog's about to attack because he's like craving the stuff, basically. Um yeah, and I think Moe gets out of there before the attack, but like there's a full dog attack. Because I guess he can't get him the stuff fast enough.
WilsonI guess. I was kind of confused by that, but it's like okay.
CaptainI I think that's what's happening because it's supposed to be like really addictive. Later on in the movie, they they're like, you can't go more than an hour without eating it.
WilsonYeah, I don't know. They're basically eating it all the time, whatever scene you see of somebody who's taking over.
CaptainUm yes, and then so he has Nicole kind of like on his side. Um and then he also he goes to the I can't remember State or Virginia came up because the FDA guy said that's where the study was originally being tested, right? So he goes there.
WilsonYeah, but like the town's basically empty, all the residents except for like the convenience store guy and the gas station guy, they everyone moved away. They're getting all their mail forwarded, so it's just these two in the town, and um Mo is interviewing, asking him, like, you know, why are you still here? And we get some like dodgy answers, and like high as fuck.
CaptainThat man was so fucking high.
WilsonI was I was pretty entertained, dude.
CaptainThat scene was so funny. I was fully entertained. I was like, what the what was the director? What was the directing notes for this character? It's just like, yeah, man, act weird, act drugged, uh like that is not the way a normal human would talk in any situation. It's like so weird. He like it said was that the post office? Or because like he was the postman, right?
WilsonHe was like Well, yeah, I wonder, I didn't know if it was one of those things where like it's such a small town, so like a lot of these things are in the same store.
CaptainYeah. I'm like, that's not I mean, if you're at the post office, aren't you a federal worker? Like um, it was such a weird but very funny scene. And then we also um Mo meets Chocolate Chip Charlie here. Remember, because he like jumps on him thinking that this guy works for the stuff company, but he's like, no, actually, I'm investigating them. Um so Charlie is now on his team. I guess eventually they have to flee. Like people come out of the woods and start attacking them.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainI'm not really sure.
WilsonAnd then they flee by boat.
CaptainYeah. They flee by just random robot that's just around. Um and they go to that diner, and I don't I don't know exactly like what the purpose was, but he tells Charlie to go talk to this guy at the FBI. Yeah. I don't know what the purpose was, like, at the diner to tell him that. And then he just fucks off until the end of the movie.
WilsonYeah, and then also at the diner, we see the scene where like he asks if they have the stuff, and the waitress is like, No, we're all out. And then at the end of the scene, you just see her walk back to the freezer and they're full of. Oh, yeah, I think why you lie about it.
CaptainYeah, they didn't they didn't explain this well, but I imagine this I'm assuming, based on what happened, that in State of Virginia, they were going around asking questions. The gas station pump guy ran off into the woods like shortly after they started asking questions. I'm assuming he like let the other stuffies, as they call them in the movie, know. And because not only are they acting weird with him in the diner, but then you see the scene of him in like New York where they're like trying to run him over, and the woman pulls a walkie-talkie out of her uh the stuffed like cart, and she's like, he's here. So I think like they're all working together to try to like get him to stop investigating, basically.
WilsonInteresting.
CaptainNot explained. It's just what I understood.
WilsonOkay. I think that's a very fair read of the situation.
CaptainYeah, so I think I think she was I think she was warned and knew to not tell him anything. So Okay.
WilsonSo Um I forget the order that happens next, but we also see like this it's this like the B story of the kid and his family, and at some point he the kid goes to the grocery store and he just destroys all the stuff in the store. At least as much as he can.
CaptainI love that. Yeah. Literally throwing it all over the place, like smashing it out of like the glass freezer cabinets. It very fun. I mean, I just can imagine, like, you're told, like, okay, destroy everything as like a 12-year-old kid. Like that would just be so fun. I'd be fun now. I mean now. I mean, fuck it. They're like, I need you to destroy all of this, it'd be like, bit.
WilsonYou're not wrong. Um, but he can't get through all of it. They do get him restrained, and then you know, it cuts to later, and he's at his house, clearly punished, um, sent to his room. Um but he comes downstairs and his family is just like gig gorging on the stuff. Um
CaptainUm and they're trying to force feed it to him. Or like forced him to eat it basically. Um and he obviously is not going to. He tries to like play it off that he they basically told him he sent him to his room with it. He like flushed it down the toilet. It didn't really want to get flushed. It's like wiggling around in the toilet. Um but he like pretends that he ate it. Um and he like put some shaving cream in the cup to like make it look like he, you know, mostly ate it. Um anyway, the family realizes that he's lying, and he r he has to flee. He has to run out of their house. And who told Oh, there was a newspaper article about this kid being arrested from the from destroying all this stuff, and Mo Rutherford sees that article. Um, so he's like on his way to talk to just Jason anyway. And as Jason is like fleeing and his family's running after him, and they're like about to attack him, Mo pulls up and is like, get in. And I'm like, mmm, the legal definition of this would be kidnapping. That's my first thought. Yeah. That's that's that would be that's what that is.
WilsonUm his family's basically brainwashed now, or it's fully stuffy, so they're not gonna do anything.
CaptainYeah, and so then he's like, we're getting on a plane. I'm like, that's not big kidnapping. Um big kidnapping, but um basically Jason believes him. Like Mo said, like, I've also seen this stuff move. You know, I'm on your side, basically, like I'm I'm investigating. Um, so it's like him and the kid and Nicole get on this plane to go to where?
WilsonGeorgia? Um I think they yeah, I think they are going to Midland, Georgia, to then you know, find all the people that move there, and I guess there's a factory there.
CaptainThat's right. There are factories there.
WilsonMm-hmm.
CaptainYeah.
WilsonSo um Yeah, so they they land and then he tells the pilot, like, hey, when the kid wakes up, and if we are not back in three hours, fly him somewhere else.
CaptainI think so, but he doesn't stay there, the kid.
WilsonNo, because like the uh post office guy from earlier just like pops up and kills the pilot, and the goop goes in the plane. Kid escapes, uh Yeah.
CaptainWhen you say goop goes in the plane, I think you should elaborate that like the goop is pouring out of these people when they're when they're like punctured in any way.
WilsonYes. But also, this was like a giant uh one that maybe wasn't in a person because it there was just so much goop.
CaptainSovent, like literally pouring. Waterfall is coming, it's coming out of the pilot area.
WilsonYeah. Um, so uh Mo and Nicole head to the factory.
Factory Clues And The Motel Attack
CaptainUmright they go in pretending that they're there for a tour, and Nicole's like, right, I see this, but like, where where do you mix the ingredients? Like, where's that part? And they're like, Oh, nobody's nobody sees that. No, no, no, no. No, don't be ridiculous, Andrea. Yeah. Um, so they were like, Alright, well fuck it. Um and I think we also see that Jason snuck out to the some tanker truck that is at the factory.
WilsonI guess has to climb in it uh in the tanker to not get caught. Uh but obviously they close it and he's stuck in there, and all the trucks are driving to the site where they suck up the stuff out of the ground.
CaptainYes. And I think they kind of push Mo and Nicole out of there. Um, and they were like, Oh, we set you up in a really nice motel.
WilsonOh, yeah.
CaptainSo like they don't get to see that scene, but uh yeah, after that that whole mess, they they were like, fuck this, we're just gonna go back to the factory because I mean I'll see what's going on, and there are people that are actively working in like the middle of the night. Yeah. Um the the motel scene was like very cool the way they shot that. Um but yeah, they basically like a tried attempted murder on those two people um with a goop a mattress goop, uh mattress goop on the face, yes. Um and then they burn the goop, which actually it does get itself to detach from the guy's face because it was he was like suffocating, and then mattress yeah, and then a person like came in there and was like it almost seemed like he could feel that the part of the goop was being burned. But yeah, and then he like tries to attack them, but um he also he basically gets pushed into the trap that was supposed to kill Nicole and Mo, like the Yeah.
WilsonBig goop seemed like it was punishing him, which I didn't really get, but Big Goop, yeah.
CaptainUm but very cool, like the I mean so much goop. I mean just pouring just everywhere, just filling the room. Yep. I I guess we should clarify, it's just like white cream. It's like yeah, like a m like a marshmallow, not like between marshmallow and yogurt, somewhere between those two consistency. Um it's not it doesn't look appetizing. Most food you eat is not just white.
WilsonI don't know. I mean, like it looks like some smooth soft serve or you'd you'd fall for it, is what you're saying.
CaptainYeah okay. Alright. Um I probably would too.
WilsonUm yeah, so yes, they go back in the middle of the night and then they see the trucks that you were saying that are like and uh kid Kid Boy is still stuck in the tanker, and obviously when they start sucking up more stuff from the ground, they don't know he's in there, but you know, it's gonna fill up you know, not good.
CaptainYeah, he starts yelling, and luckily Mo ends up being next to the tanker when he does and realizes that Jason's in there, so he can save him. I think they just steal the truck he's in, right?
WilsonYeah, because they need to drive it for proof, I think that what's going on. Um They do get pulled over by a police officer who is a stuffy, and they like this this is kind of cool, but to distract him, you know, they were like pretending that they were stuffies too, and they're like, Oh, you you need to eat some of this road stuff because you must be so hungry.
CaptainYeah, I was it was coming out of the hose that was attached to the back of their truck. Yeah, and they were like, Oh, I haven't eaten it in an hour. I need it. Don't you need it too? Yeah.
WilsonSo uh that that tricked the cop. They knocked him out, they were able to keep going. Where did the is that what they took?
CaptainI'm I'm a little confused. So at some point Nicole gets attacked. I can't really I don't even know exactly what how the We're not there yet. Oh, okay. Like because Oh, Mo Mo sneaks in and he like puts on the yellow uniform, that part.
WilsonYeah, so they start they like destroy the factory.
CaptainOkay.
WilsonOr one of them. And then um I think next Oh, that's right.
CaptainThey go back to the factory, and yes, you're right, they like bomb it or something.
WilsonYeah, well, actually, oh, we skipped a
The Colonel’s Militia Plan Goes Loud
Wilsonstep. So um when they drove the truck away, they uh he was going after this like military faction that operates by itself in like the US.
CaptainYeah, I was very confused about what I was like, is this just a personal militia that's happening? What is going on? They live in a castle. What is happening?
WilsonYeah, so he enlists his help.
CaptainUm It seemed to be like a dishonorably discharged colonel from the army or something.
WilsonThat's is what it was giving. Um so basically they convince him to help, like, here's what we need to do, let's team up.
CaptainUm The Colonel is uh mentally unwell, and he's like anti-communist, and he has this idea. He's also a little racist. Yes, but he's like has this idea from the war that uh that our enemies are like poisoning us in food products. Um and so that's how I I guess Mo knows him from working in the FBI and was like, okay, well I can just basically like trick him into or not trick him basically, but like say like, you know, who knows if this stuff is um like given to us by our enemies and like we have to destroy it, and that gets the colonel like enough to help him, basically. And yeah, then they let go and just like I don't know, bomb shit.
WilsonYeah, they like blow up a factory. Um and then at that point they consider like how they're gonna do it next to explain it and get the word out there.
CaptainYeah. Um well how why didn't Nicole get attacked by that uh post office guy? Like, what was that? And then his legs got run over.
WilsonOh, that part. Oh yeah, I was thinking you were talking. I don't know. I think you just popped up.
CaptainI was like, what am I what's uh yeah, I was like, we're going backwards. Like what's aren't we we're getting to the destroy part? Like, why are they I don't know I was I was confused.
WilsonYeah, I I don't I don't know. So they I guess take over a radio station or the colonel owns it already. He kept saying like my station. Yeah.
CaptainI I was confused by that as well. I was like, who's airing this broadcast? Like who's who's listening to this broadcast?
WilsonYeah. So um well basically their goal is they're gonna broadcast everything they know about the stuff, get it to stop, and then Chocolate Chip Charlie shows up and he's like, Hey, I need to be part of this like live announcement. It affected me. You know, I helped out. Um and then he gets like he's alone with Nicole in a sound booth, and we find out he's he's a stuffy. He's either been one or he just became one. But this is one of the I guess more intense effects for the movie. Oh yeah, they really did it out for the his. Yeah, his like jaw went wide open, you know, goop came out, his head exploded.
CaptainYeah, he's like got that partial, like waxy look the 80s goopy people have.
WilsonYeah. Uh so basically, but she turns out fine.
CaptainUm Jason almost dies too, but he also turns out fine.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm and then they broadcast it, and it and the broadcast that they have is like a very well-polished script that Nicole wrote because she's like a marketer. Um so and then there's like towards the very end of the movie, they like break the fourth wall and they're like talking to us. Like Nicole Like she was like, and then the whole nation listened.
WilsonLike is like I don't believe that, but okay.
CaptainShe's like talking to us, no?
WilsonYeah. I mean, yeah, or uh yeah. She is looking directly at the camera.
CaptainAnd she's like the whole nation listened, and they started burning things and they stopped selling it, and I don't know. Oh, sh I see. Yeah, and then it like led her into apologizing for being the marketer of the stuff. Oh, yeah, because it's like keeps panning out, and she's ends up being on a TV screen, and Mo like turns it off. So sh okay. I mean, it seemed like she was tying us, but yeah, no, she was just giving her own polished apology.
WilsonYeah, it was like kind of intense for a side character. I mean, I guess she was the main character.
CaptainI just didn't aura, alright? Well, so she's got it. She's got it.
The Broadcast And A Dark Ending
WilsonUh yeah, so basically the next scene, uh, Mo goes to uh one of the rich guys' houses who paid him to destroy the stuff. But basically, he's the owner of the stuff company working with this other guy that paid him at the beginning of the movie. Um and they're just like, well, even though the stuff failed, we're just gonna release the taste, uh, which is a diluted version. Um you're not.
CaptainYeah, 12% still the stuff. So enough that people will crave it with without supposedly being mind controlled, which you know, he asks, like, okay, so how do you know that? And they said they tested. I'm like, oh my fucking god, you're gonna go through this whole thing again about a testing city that vanished and bullshit.
WilsonUm, well that's not gonna Moses' like, that's not gonna happen. And um he has or he brings um ja uh Jason. Jason in. Uh the kid, he has a box in his hands, and Mo also has a gun, and he's like, Well, if it's all good to eat, how about you just eat all of your product?
CaptainUm they don't want to do it's like either eat your product or eat this bullet.
WilsonSo yeah. Uh so basically they become stuffies. Um yeah.
CaptainNow, again, why are the police sirens approaching? Who was that for? Was that for Mo? Was that for the CEO?
WilsonI don't remember hearing them, but probably for the CEOs.
CaptainI remember hearing them. I just was like, for who? Who just dramatic effect who is being arrested? I don't know which side the police are on. Like, I don't know.
WilsonUh well yeah, so like he gets his, I guess you could say, revenge there. Um, but the last scene in the movie, I guess this is the scene where Patrick Dempsey's in. Um you basically see smugglers, you know, distributing the stuff, and that that's kind of how it ends.
CaptainYes. Yeah. I still can't believe one of those men is Patrick Dempsey. Yeah. Yeah. There's a lot of actors to say this movie. I don't know how I feel about this movie. I don't think I like it. It's campy, and the campiness is fun. And like I do I did laugh a lot during the movie, but like I'm also like WTF? I wish I had a little bit less uh WTF, I don't know.
WilsonYeah,
Ratings And Favorite Goopy Moments
WilsonI I mean I think I liked it. I um I was just looking ahead at some of the hot goss.
CaptainOh yeah, there's like a lot. There's a lot about the budge, hot goss, or sorry, the I guess the box office hot goss and then regular hot goss.
WilsonI was looking at the one um what the director said the main inspiration was, and I guess he did have like a this movie did have a stronger meaning about just like corporate greed and that sort of thing.
CaptainYeah.
WilsonI didn't so I maybe that's why part of the reason this movie is really popular, because there is a bigger message, it's not just dumb horror.
CaptainYep, yes, definitely. Is that where are you starting? Starting with those or you're starting with the numbnums?
WilsonUh I can jump I can jump up to numnums just so it's not forgotten. Um
Production Hot Goss And Practical Effects
Wilsonso the budget was 1.7 million. Um Do we have a box office?
CaptainWell, so that if you read, it was supposed to be theatrically released, and like the month before it was gonna go in the theaters, it got wait. No. Sorry. It was supposed to be theatrically released, but uh he said that there was where was it? Oh, there was a hurricane that hit New York. This is from Larry Cohen. There was a hurricane that hit New York and the day the newspapers were supposed to be delivered that day that it had like the reviews for the movie, but the newspapers weren't delivered that day. So he said there was a bunch of great reviews that nobody read, which he said hurt the movie a lot. He also said, which I think is a little bit later, that the studio really wanted a straight horror movie, so they marketed this as a straight horror, and that is not what this is. It's like a satirical horror comedy. Um, and that he said that also hurt the movie a lot.
WilsonYeah, I could see that.
CaptainSo, like there's like they called this a box office bomb, supposedly. Did not give a number.
WilsonDamn. Yeah. That is pretty sad.
CaptainYes.
WilsonUm, okay. Some other hot goss. Um, so you mentioned the one about the studio, one of the straight up horror.
CaptainUm did you want to read the quote from Larry Cohen? So he says that, yeah, consumerism and corporate greed were his main inspiration. Um he says there's a lot of products that are marketed in this company that are um harming people, you know, like junk food and things that could be hazardous to your health that we consume every day. Um and he said he started thinking about this stuff, um, could just be like an imaginary product in this film. And then it could be consumed by millions and was doing like irreparable damage, and everybody's gobbling it down. So like he wanted to like make uh like that that concept for his movie. But he did understand that this is supposed to be like a satirical kind of horror comedy, um, which that's not what the studio wanted.
WilsonYeah, so I thought that was pretty um pretty interesting. Uh I was seeing some hot goss on like the stuff itself. Um one of the uh Larry had said that you know, in some scenes where the stuff is chasing a character, it was a foam made of blended fish bones. Disgusting. Yeah, absolutely disgusting. There was really nothing better. Um it stinks so much that right after the shots, a lot of times the actress just run into the river just to get rid of that smell.
CaptainYou know what's so funny? Uh after that, it's it said that stand-ins for the stuff, so like not for actual like filming motion, I guess. Um the movie included a lot of fucking ice cream and yogurt. I'm like, and then you had to use ground fish bones for the rest of it. Um I'm like the wide wide range here. Um but yeah, they use that for like um the avalanche type scenes where it's just like, you know.
WilsonUm I see they also used fire extinguishing foam.
CaptainYeah, there I think there's one shot where it's like a like a lot of it's coming down, and that was fire extinguisher foam. Um yeah. And then yeah, there was a lake scene that they said they had to use some like animation. You can tell it's like 80s animation, but it's not terrible.
WilsonUm this next one I thought was pretty cool. Um, so I guess this the scene in the hotel room where the stuff flies out of the mattress at somebody um and like up onto the ceiling, that was shot in a room that could turn upside down, um, which was the same one used uh in Nightmare on Elm Street for Johnny Depp's character, where he sucked into the bed. And you know, when I saw this scene, I thought of that scene from Nightmare on Elm Street. That's okay. So I think it was like a big deal how they created a room that could change.
CaptainYeah. Yeah, it's it looks it it looks very well done. You it doesn't look I mean there's a scene in this movie that is like green screen and it is bad green. I mean it is it's pretty rough green screen. So like there this scene I'm I was like, okay, you guys really got got something good going on here. Um but yeah, because it does, it like flies up the wall and then he comes back down. Um and yeah. Yeah. Um yeah.
WilsonYeah, so then I I see another one, I guess somebody known for Wendy's Where's the Beef? Their original saying commercial stuff in this movie. Yeah.
CaptainI don't remember hearing her say that in this movie, but like does that said in the movie? It must be in one of the commercials for the stuff.
WilsonYeah, I think that's what they're saying.
CaptainIn the original Wendy's advertisement from 1984, which was a year before this movie came out, this woman is the one in the w commercial that says where's the beef, when they're they're like talking about other fast food restaurants burgers. Like that famous line, Where's the beef? And then she says it again, Where's the stuff in this movie? Um I like looked up the commercial on YouTube because I was like, Let me see. Yeah. But yeah, it's that's her. That's that's Clara Peller.
WilsonAlright. Um this next one's interesting because I had wondered this a little bit. They look so similar. They look so similar, but the brothers in the movie are real life brothers.
CaptainLike dark brown hair and then like crystal blue eyes. Yeah.
WilsonUm And then uh finally, if you watch Stranger Things in I think season four that was focused around the mall, um the stuff is one of the films playing.
CaptainYeah, on the in yeah. This is season three. I don't know.
WilsonOkay. Oh, yeah, I think you're right. I could they kind of blend together now.
CaptainUh uh nobody knows.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm but yeah, it's cool that it was actually featured, like that it's on a poster in Stranger Things um Timeline. All works, you know, all checks out. Um yeah, so back to the numbs.
Final Scores, Next Movie, And Closing Advice
CaptainYou so just for rating wise, the critic scores are 68, audiences are 50, and I think I just looked on Letterboxd that this has three out of five. I don't I don't know. I don't know where I put this personally. I don't know. Part of me enjoyed it, but part of me was like, I hate this. I don't know. Where where are you if you still need to think about it? We can go over rags first.
WilsonI didn't super like it. Like I want to like it so bad because of the 80s effects, but I just don't think I liked it. What hold on, let me see what I I rated it on Letterboxd.
CaptainOh, you already did?
WilsonI gave it a two and a half.
CaptainUh okay. I think that's where I'm I think that's where I'm hitting two.
WilsonYeah, like a 40-50%-ish range.
CaptainYeah. I think I'm gonna give this like a 44.
WilsonOkay. Yeah. I don't know. Like, it wasn't a waste of time. I just didn't love it.
CaptainYeah. For me, I think the rag is probably the scene where the kid gets to destroy everything in the grocery store. Or the scene where the the room that flips around. Like, those are probably the top scenes in my opinion. Yeah. Um I don't know if that was your rag, but I can go with the grocery store one, because like uh just watching somebody be able to just like, okay, now destroy everything, action, like that just seems like so fun. You know what? Get to see that and like uh maybe I'm just jealous. I don't know. But he's like literally whacking everything off the shelves in the grocery store and like smashing the glass and like maybe I need to go to one of those um rage rooms.
WilsonMaybe so.
CaptainI don't know. That just seems like fun. You never get to like unleash, you know what I mean? Like that's never something that like you get to just do. Like if I like wanted to like scream at the top of my lungs, like where do I go do that? I can't do that in my house because like someone might call the cops. I can't do that at work. Like, uh where do I do that? I can't like even if I like go to a park, like someone can still call the cops. I'm like, where do I if I just want to like scream at the top of my lungs? You're like laughing hysterically. You've never thought about this? I'm like, I want to scream.
WilsonI'll just like picture you just screaming in your house, just like I want to like practice my scream queen scream, but like where do you practice that?
CaptainI can't practice that without sounding like I'm being murdered.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainBut like I want to see if I'm good at it. But like, how where do I practice where someone nobody will like call the cops?
WilsonYeah. I don't know. I'm just I'm picturing you doing it with your like when you laugh without smiling, like without you're just full psycho.
CaptainOh my gosh. Yeah. I don't know. That's that's what I that's how I feel. That's my raised a glass. The destruction chaos.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainWas yours the mattress or the room-turning mattress?
WilsonUm I think it was the effects for the like the the Charlie guy's head exploding.
CaptainOh, okay. That's right.
WilsonOr like his mouth getting yeah.
CaptainYeah, all like locked like, you know.
WilsonUm It was nasty in there.
CaptainWhat's that movie we did with that old lady that like dislocates her jaw and she like eats people whole? What? For the podcast. Sounds like vaguely familiar, but well anyway, he like his jaw becomes like big dislocated from his face. Man, yeah, something like that. There's like the scene in the movie is like there's like an old lady in a cave and she's like snake dislocating her jaw and like consuming a human.
WilsonI don't know.
CaptainThat could be so many movies, Captain. Who knows? I mean we watch so many. Okay.
WilsonYou're waiting, you're gonna have to figure it out.
CaptainI'm I'm gonna have to figure it out later. Did I tell you? Okay, I said 44, yeah, that's where I am at. Did you say, oh yeah, yeah. 50? Sorry.
WilsonSomewhere between four.
CaptainLike panic, panic. Okay. Um I don't think I'd recommend, I'm gonna be honest. There's so many that are 80 goops if you wanted to like 80 goop.
WilsonYeah, a lot of the internet was like, oh, this is like the blob. Same idea. The blob the fly. Well, not a hive mind.
CaptainI mean, no, but like, I mean, kind of. I mean I mean, there's just eighty eighties goop.
WilsonYeah, that's all you need.
CaptainDo you have anything else? Do you want to say what we're doing next time?
WilsonUh yeah. So um, next time we are doing Delirium from 2018. I don't think I've seen that. Uh, but it's about a man inheriting a haunted house.
CaptainYeah. There's more to it than that, but that's what I'm gonna give you.
WilsonWell it's played enough to be like, hmm.
CaptainIt's played by Topher Grace. Did you know? Now, maybe I'm just dumb, but I had no idea his name was Christopher.
WilsonUh, I don't remember if I knew that or not. I just knew that Topher is a nickname or can be a nickname for Christopher.
CaptainI've never heard that ever. Like, I didn't put that together, but like Avi.
WilsonBut then when you see it, you're like, well, duh.
CaptainYeah, but like it's so weird. The name Topher from like Topher Grace, like, sounds like a normal name. But hearing that Topher is a nickname for Christopher, I'm like stupid. I don't know, I don't like it. I'm like, you have Chris is right there.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainI don't know.
WilsonMaybe everyone has Chris. I don't know.
CaptainMaybe maybe I just have to like process it, but like I literally just found that out like earlier today, and I was like, I don't even know what life is.
WilsonYou know, his name sounds so elegant, like full his full name, Christopher Grace. Well, not elegant's not the right word, but it sounds very like.
CaptainNo, it sounds very yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. I think it sounds very yeah. Well I don't know.
WilsonYeah. Uh well yeah, so that's next to me.
CaptainPeople really like Stan for Topher Grace.
WilsonI he seems like a good guy.
CaptainYeah, he's like one of the good ones that came out of that that show. So I'm glad he gets to be in a I don't think this movie did very well, but uh we get to watch him. I don't I don't like watching very often and stuff, so yeah, so we'll support uh support supporters. Um so from this very relatable movie, have you uh have you thought about any advice you could uh roll around?
WilsonUm you know, I want to like pick on the kid, but for a scary movie he did the smarter thing of Oh yeah. Hey, there's a problem. I'm not I'm gonna, you know, just ignore it.
CaptainYeah, he actually like stood up against his parents.
WilsonYeah. This is a hard one to pull advice. That one.
CaptainIt's like not advice.
WilsonUh don't eat stuff in the ground.
CaptainOh, that's great advice. Yes. That would solve all the problems of this city. Yeah. Don't eat stuff in the ground. That's perfect.
