Returning Lost Cards And Wallets
CaptainAre we here? We're here.
WilsonIt's another week. You paused. The new day.
CaptainI wasn't sure if you were here. Oh, I'm here.
WilsonActually, you have to do this one by yourself.
CaptainOkay, bye.
WilsonBye. See you later.
CaptainYou just popped in.
WilsonUm I'm a special guest.
CaptainWow, thank you. Um this is like not really that interesting, but um great. Well, I don't know. I just, you know, it just made me feel good.
WilsonSo that's interesting.
CaptainHave you ever found somebody's cars on the ground and then like returned them?
WilsonLike a like a I uh a driver's license. Or what do you mean? I've never run across one, no. Have you?
CaptainYeah, I feel like they I feel like I see them posted in like the neighborhood group like a a couple of times. Okay, I've returned somebody's work badge that I found in the park once. Um, like I met with them the next day and I was like, here's your badge, and they were like, Oh my god, thanks so much. Anyway, um, I was walking on a very busy street and I found somebody's ID, their license, and their credit card, like together. Like as if they were like pulled it out of their pocket, like pulled their phone out of the pocket, and like those two things fell out. And I was like, So I picked them up and then I post them on the group, and I was like, you know. Basically, it's like if this happened to me, I I would hope somebody would do it do the same thing. When I lost my wallet once at Penn State, I was so upset. I don't know if you remember that.
WilsonYeah. Well, I don't remember, but it would be very upsetting.
CaptainYeah.
WilsonUm and it would piss me off.
CaptainYeah, and like everything was gone. Like all cards. I had like a $50 like movie theater gift card from like a birthday or something gone. I was like, no. Like, I'm never gonna get that back. Um, and that there was some And nobody ever returned it. No, there was some cash in there. Um, I didn't get any charges on like the credit card that was in there. So I I I figured it just got like lost. Like, I don't think someone stole it, but I remember I like had it with me. I sat on a bench for a little bit waiting for somebody to meet me. And then when they met me, we like went somewhere, then went somewhere else, and then like by the time I realized I had my I didn't have it with me, I was like, I went back to all those places, uh, but it I mean it wasn't anywhere. So anyway, I met her the next day and like she just kept being like so gracious, and then she like tried to pay me. I was like, girl, do not like it's not I was like, it's it's like no worries, and she was like, You're a godsend. I was like, literally, this took like almost nothing out of my day, and I would just like wanted to I I would just would want someone to do the same thing for me. So yeah, anyway, I was like That was nice, yeah.
WilsonA lot of people like if they didn't steal it, they'd probably just walk by like I'm not dealing with that.
CaptainYeah, I just yeah, it would it's just like such an upsetting like if that happened to me, I'd be so upset. Like, I don't know.
WilsonYeah, a couple a couple years ago we were at the beach um with Finn's family, and I like we were we were like we're walking away from the beach to go get a snack and we were gonna come back, and we got to the boardwalk and I was like, I don't have my wallet. I dropped it in the sand between where we were, and um we we walked back and it was still there and it was easy to find. And I was like, damn, I just got really, really lucky.
CaptainI remember one time like years ago, I got out of my car, I parked my car on the this is I parked on the street, got in my car, went into my house, um, or into my apartment, and then like I was hanging out there for like almost 10 minutes, and then I realized I didn't have my phone, and I went back to my car. My phone was on the ground next to my car. Like, I think it was in my lap, and I got out of the car, it fell out of my lap, I didn't notice for like 10 minutes, went back down there. It was just my phone sitting in the street next to my car. I was like, oh my god, like and it was it was fine. Like nobody, nobody saw it, nobody saw it, no wow, but like I just remember think finger telling like so lucky. I was like, oh my god, this could have like ruined my like next like week if something happened. But I was just sitting there, so anyway, wow, okay. Um, but yeah, I was like, don't pay me. What uh she was like a school teacher. I was like, don't pay me, what because I know you're not paid enough. Yeah, I'm like, oh my god, no. But anyway, sorry, that I think that just happened earlier this week, and I was like, we should all do that. Do you know what I mean? Yes, make the world better. Um, what was your one-minute story?
WilsonOh,
The Wild Los Culturistas Awards
Wilsonwell, it's not really a story, but are you following um the the culture awards, but or whatever they're called by the Las Culturitas?
CaptainI have no idea what you're talking about. Nothing.
WilsonUm, Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. Are you familiar with them?
CaptainI know who Bowen is.
WilsonWho's okay?
CaptainI might recognize who Matt Rogers is like in the face.
WilsonThey both have a podcast, a pretty famous podcast called Los Culturistas.
CaptainUm, I know this guy, yeah.
WilsonOkay, yeah. Well that starting, I think, last year, um, they host their own awards show for like the most random like batshit categories. Um you'll have to look them up later. There's so many categories and they're so specific. Um, but they had the awards event last night, and a lot of like you know, A-list people, you know, whoever it went, um like at a location? Yeah. Like they rent uh it looked like a legit awards show. Uh but yeah, I don't know. It's just it's just ridiculous. But um I think you'll get a kick out of you if you look it up.
CaptainUm sorry, I was looking at Matt Rogers first. I see that he's most known for his Las Cultoritas. Oh my gosh, I can't even words are so mouthful. Um I see their podcast. Oh, Culture Awards. Every June they uh host their annual live parody award show. Um but it doesn't say like what the categories are. I have to look those up separately, I guess.
WilsonI think so. And uh it's also on their um their Instagram at some point, but uh there's just there's so many categories. You would just you you'd keep scrolling.
CaptainLike how long did this show go on?
WilsonI didn't I didn't watch it, I've just seen clips. Um so like you know, a lot of people were talking about it yesterday. Or sorry, today.
CaptainOh wow, they do have famous people there.
WilsonYeah, like they're not messing around.
CaptainI mean, I feel like Boeen Yang is pretty I mean, he's pretty famous, like people know who he is.
WilsonYou know, like okay, one category is most iconic building or structure, fastest four-legged animal. Um, one of the nominees is my mom when Black Friday hit, and then it says in parentheses 2009, online shopping wasn't prevalent yet.
CaptainI see best thing that could change your life for two weeks.
WilsonI just yeah, there's there's just like pages and pages of categories.
CaptainBut like, I don't understand how people win these categories. Like, how do you win?
WilsonI mean, some of these, like you're just like it's just nothing that won't win, but sometimes they actually nominate a famous person. Oh. So like I think that's probably where the award show focuses. Like, um, I don't know if you ever watched Mandy Moore's movie A Walk to Remember. Maybe she's like a dying cancer patient, I think. Yeah, at last night's event, Bowen and Matt Rogers sung that song, Mandy's song from that movie, and then she came out on stage and sung the rest of it.
CaptainWait, she's a singer?
WilsonYeah, she had like an album at one point. What? Like early on. I mean, she wasn't like super. I mean, it's fine, but I'm telling.
CaptainI'm telling you so that's okay. What okay? That's like so random.
WilsonYeah, it's just uh the rabbit hole for you to go down at some point.
CaptainYeah, for some reason, I like have been on such this like podcast lump. I like haven't listened to them in like a month. I'm so sorry.
WilsonWe uh honestly we only listen to podcasts when we're driving to Maryland, and it's usually to catch up on Amy Polar's podcast.
CaptainI see clips of that all the time.
WilsonIt's a it's it's really good.
CaptainI mean it seems good. I just I don't know, I never I never like listened to the whole thing. Is that bad?
WilsonUh yeah, I know it's fine, I guess.
CaptainOh, I see these awards. I'm on the insta.
WilsonYeah, so check that out. Uh do we want to pop in? Yeah, give me in this bitch. Yeah. This bitch. Okay.
Arachnophobia Kickoff And First Impressions
WilsonUm, welcome to the 197th episode of the Red Run podcast where we review horror movies while enjoying an adult beverage or two.
CaptainAnd I'm Captain.
WilsonAnd I'm Wilson, and this week we're reviewing the 1990 American horror comedy film Arachnophobia. I didn't really get this as a comedy, or like I wouldn't consider this a comedy.
CaptainThere are some comedies.
WilsonYeah, I mean, some of it's some of it's silly, but yeah, sure. We'll yeah. They know what they're talking about.
CaptainWhen John Goodman comes on the screen, they literally play like they literally play like like 90s music, like I don't know, sitcani music.
WilsonI think he might have been like the best part about the movie. Um, so the director, Frank Marshall. Um, this is his directorial debut. Uh what I looked up earlier. What else is he done?
CaptainOh, if you go down, I have FM and then I have Oh, I just need to scroll.
WilsonYes, thank you. Um so uh he's worked closely with Spielberg. Um he's produced a lot of uh well-known movies. Um and he he and his wife have a company and they did uh Success signs, the Born movies, um Jurassic all the Jurassic Park movies or the like the newer ones, the ones that yeah, yeah. Um and Twisters, still haven't seen that.
CaptainWow, really?
WilsonWell, I wanted to rewatch the first one first, and I haven't made time to do that.
CaptainOh, a hundred percent watched rewatch the first one. I'm gonna argue the first one's better.
WilsonI mean, uh you I feel like that's not a con probably not a controversial opinion, right?
CaptainI know, but I'm I was like hardcore telling you to watch Twisters, but I Oh I controversial.
WilsonUm I don't have any misconceptions. But Twister's good.
CaptainTwister good.
WilsonI think it yeah, yes. Um he's written films like this one. No, no, no.
CaptainThe screen sorry, Frank Marshall's the director for this movie, and then the screenplay was by Don Jacoby and Wesley Strick. Wesley Strick wrote this one, and then yeah, that's the WS. I see.
WilsonYeah, I miss I just thought that was like some abbreviation for his writing credit.
CaptainI don't know.
WilsonNo, you're wrong. Um, have you seen nope, that's not what I was thinking of.
CaptainOkay, Wesley Strike, he wrote a uh Wolf, which is a Martin Scorsese remake of Cape Theater. I don't and then he yeah, and then what you were about to say with Man in the High Castle? Or you thought that was something else?
WilsonI thought that was something else, but I haven't seen The Man in the High Castle.
CaptainI mix it up with the one that is um uh the show with Bill Skaskad.
WilsonUm the show with Bill Skarsgard.
CaptainYeah, that like horror show with Bill Skuskide.
WilsonWait, like the vampire werewolf one? No, that's talking about Welcome to Dairy?
CaptainYeah, wait, no, no, no, not Welcome to Dairy. The other one. What? Bill?
WilsonWhat else is Bill in? Like TV show-wise.
CaptainThere is a singular TV show before Welcome to Dairy. Something about this cascade. You know, you just gotta love it. And it's not that it's probably that one that you can't remember what it's called.
WilsonWell, that's the one with vampires and werewolves.
CaptainNo, that is you're thinking of his brother.
WilsonNo. Bill was in the one that I'm talking about. Oh, she's incredible.
CaptainUh nobody knows anything.
WilsonI know. Who's to say? Who's to say? I need to remember what I'm talking about before I okay. I was thinking of Hemlock Grove.
CaptainYeah, it's that one. Wait, is it that one? No, Castle Rock.
WilsonOh, I heard that did terribly.
CaptainDamn, did it? I didn't mind it. Fuck.
WilsonOh, really? Okay. Maybe I'm just um confused because I remember seeing it had Elsie Fisher in it, who I like, but she's been in a lot of like bad things recently that I'm like, maybe the show is bad too.
CaptainNo, I'm thinking of Castle Rock, and I and I feel like I deserve credit for being confused because this is called The Man in the High Castle.
WilsonOh, yeah. That no, that is a logical jump. I was thinking of um what's that Studio Ghibli film? The cartoon? Yeah. Um the one they do.
CaptainUm Toto's Toto's Castle or something. There is something about a something mail delivery service?
WilsonUmail? I don't that doesn't sound right. Oh, Howl's Moving Castle. That's what I was thinking of.
CaptainYou know, it was all jumbled in there.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainAnyway, it's neither one of those things.
WilsonNope.
Cast Talk With Classic Side Quests
WilsonAnd we're moving on to the cast. Uh okay, so um the star is Jeff Daniels. Uh, he plays Dr. Ross Jennings. Um, he was hairy and dumb and dumber. Um, he was in the show The Newsroom. Um, and then he got an Emmy for that.
CaptainUh I always meant to watch that. I never did.
WilsonYeah, I haven't seen that. And it looks like he also got an Emmy uh for Godless. Also did not see that.
CaptainNo. I mostly know him for his Dumb and Dumber.
WilsonYeah, that's basically where I know him from. And then when I was younger, I feel like I always got him confused with uh Dave Coulier.
CaptainThat's fair. I feel like that's really fair.
WilsonUh okay, then we also have Harley Jane Kozak plays his wife, uh Molly. Um her first movie was The House on Sorody Row, which was a slasher film. I think I saw the remake of that, and it was just called like Sororti Row or something. Um she was also Susan and Parenthood uh from 1989. Um and she's also a writer.
CaptainYeah, I think she decided she didn't really want to act anymore and she just wanted to write.
WilsonGood for her.
CaptainAnd then she like won some awards for writing. The Agatha Anthony and McCaffee Award. Something about her aura like slaps. I can't even describe it.
WilsonBut like you said that about I think the mom from the movie like two to two episodes ago or something.
CaptainLeave me alone.
WilsonNo, not the mom. The just the girl the guy was dating in the stuff or hooking up with. The girl, she had like a good aura, the like fashion design or the campaign designer.
CaptainOh, yeah, she slapped too. Yeah. But like, I don't know, something about her, I'm like, she's got it.
WilsonOh, yes, she wasn't playing like a dumb blonde character or anything like that.
CaptainLike, yeah, that's probably why I appreciate it so much. Because like that's uh you know, yeah, you don't if they're not like falling all over themselves, like tripping while they're running away. I'm like, love that.
WilsonCompetence.
CaptainAnyway.
WilsonUm, and then we also have John Goodman. Um, he plays Delbert, so that he plays the uh like uh Exterminator. Um obviously you know him from Roseanne, the Flintstones, 10 Cloverfield Lane. I don't remember him in Evan Almighty.
CaptainUm supporting role.
WilsonOkay. Um Hangover Part Three, The Righteous Gemstones, which I think is a huge one. Um yeah, he's just been he's good. We like John good.
CaptainYeah, it's nice to see that he's done. I mean, this is like loosely a horror movie, but and then you see him do a like ten clover field lane like what 25 years later. So it's like he just generally has like a lot of range, a lot of range, so um we also have Julian Sands.
WilsonI was like, why does this guy look familiar? I didn't look him up, but that um so he plays Dr. James Atherton, um, basically like a young uh uh what is it enterologist? Yeah, entomologist. Um so he was in uh Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, uh 24 Smallville, which I vaguely remember him being in. Um and also Jackie Chan Adventures. I loved that show when I was younger.
CaptainOh, this was the hot gas. He died on a hiking trip. He like liked to do these like really extensive hiking trips, and I guess he went by himself. Um, and yeah, and he uh his body wasn't found. Like they searched for him after he like didn't check in, and it took six months for somebody to find his body after like somebody else was on that hiking trail and found him.
WilsonDamn.
CaptainYeah, I was like, T.
WilsonI you know, I just watched the movie one uh 120-8 hours like last week.
CaptainOh yeah, I've seen that movie.
WilsonSimilar, similar vibes, yeah.
CaptainThere's nothing worse than the cave diving stuff. I'm like, get your fucking body out of there. The spelunking shit that people do, you know what I mean?
WilsonYeah, and like the um uh like the especially when they're cave diving like underwater, you're not just like exploring caves, you're like swimming in places you shouldn't be swimming. Damn it.
CaptainUm yeah, like those um weren't there a bunch of divers that just died somewhere?
WilsonProbably people keep like climbing swimming in these holes that like you have to bend your body a certain way during July and you can get in, and then they get stuck, and then people go to save them, and those people get stuck.
CaptainYeah, basically, and this movie stops swimming in them holes.
WilsonYeah, um uh then we also have Brian McNamara plays Chris. Um I don't who was Chris? I don't remember who Chris was in this movie.
CaptainUm I think he was the neighbor, maybe.
WilsonAlright.
CaptainThe gym neighbor?
WilsonOh wait, no, uh he's 65 now, so if this movie was what, 35 years old, then he was young. Oh, is he the assistant? The entomologist's assistant, maybe?
CaptainMaybe his face isn't giving that.
WilsonI was put some glasses on there. Like, is it then giving his character at glasses?
CaptainUm I don't know who this man is. Oh, this was the yes, the assistant later on in the movie. That yes. Yes, it is that.
WilsonOh, yeah, not the one that was at the very beginning.
CaptainYes.
WilsonYep. Um, okay, then we have uh James Handy as Milt Briggs.
CaptainUm, you didn't say anything that Chris Collins or that Ryan did.
WilsonOh, right, right, right, right. Uh he was in um Billionaire Boys Club, which he got a Golden Globe for. Um and his most popular role was Army Wives.
CaptainDamn, that show was on forever.
WilsonI mean, what, six years?
CaptainUh more than what I thought.
WilsonJust not the right audience for it.
CaptainYeah, I don't think we're the target. No. Who's Milt in this movie?
WilsonMilt. James Handy.
CaptainUm, was this a neighbor?
WilsonOh, that guy died too. He was wait, he just died.
CaptainYes, he just died.
WilsonFrom a stabbing. Jesus.
CaptainYeah. Yeah, he like just died. Um you know, I I don't know. You know, this is so rude, but I have to look up like James Handy Young to realize who he is in this movie.
WilsonI mean. I think that's fair. The movie was thirty-five years ago. Thirty-six.
CaptainI don't know who the fuck this is. Well, he's in here somewhere.
WilsonYeah. He was somebody that was in the movie.
CaptainHe is the guy that um The coroner. No.
WilsonNo?
CaptainNo. He's the guy that's like a mayor or something, and um Jeff Daniels character like calls him and like he's like, we need to exume the bodies. He's the guy on the other end of the phone.
WilsonYeah, I think that's the medical examiner.
CaptainOh. Well, not like the d derpy guy that's eating the whole time. Not that guy.
WilsonNo, that was the wait. Oh yeah. Well oh, that was the that guy worked at a funeral. He was the mortician.
CaptainYeah, yeah, yeah. This is the James Handy. Does that help?
WilsonYeah, I think that was I think he was I thought he was like a DA or something.
CaptainHe seemed like he had like legal. It's not important.
WilsonYou know, honestly, you're yeah, I don't know. Yeah. Um, but he was in Top Gun Maverick, uh, Jumanji, alias, the profiler. Or sorry, profiler. Um, and we also have Peter Jason plays Henry Beechwood. Um, he's worked with John Carpenter. Um, but he was in Prince of Darkness, which I think we saw. Uh They Live in the Mouth of Madness. I know we did that one. Um Village of the Damned.
CaptainOkay, this is the gym neighbor, Peter Jason. The neighbor that owns the gym or the coaches, sorry, coaches the team or whatever. Yeah.
WilsonYeah, yeah, yeah.
CaptainOkay. He's done a lot of stuff.
WilsonIt gets around. Um, okay. So getting into the movie.
Jungle Prologue And Coffin Stowaway
WilsonUm as soon as it started off, I was like, okay, do we have a budget for this movie? Like a decent budget? Because they're like flying in another country. Um, but basically, this we're following this entomologist and his team. One of them is a photographer, to this like uh, or I guess a Venezuelan uh rainforesty.
CaptainYeah. Yeah.
WilsonAnd they're basically they're trying to, you know, research and discover new new creatures.
CaptainUm yeah, I didn't catch on to this joke when they said it in the movie because it's like a dry joke, and I was confused for a second, and then Jay was like, No, that was a joke. He said he was a small game hunter, and it was it's a joke because he's an entomologist. Like, it's not actual game. It's bugs. Yeah, uh like it's like I was so confused in the beginning. I was like, why are we at bugs? Like, what's happened? Then he was like, anyway.
WilsonUm, yeah, so they're like exploring in this jungle, um, and they like mention spiders, like unique species um that are there.
CaptainYeah, they have I I will say they have a um local guide that's getting them to this special spot. The guide says, I'm not going any further, and I I just feel like that's a telltale sign like you probably shouldn't go any further either. Right. But the guide's like, I'm gonna stop it right here.
WilsonYep. Um so then basically, like one of these they come across a spider, one bites the photographer, um, who basically has a seizure and dies.
CaptainUh he like insta clots. Like I feel like the spider like like like a snake venom where it like clots your blood. Like that I feel like he like instantly was like, I'm clot stone. Like um, and but these spiders um it it like snuck in so they weren't supposed to take any like live ones back to their camp. It like snuck into his bag and it almost seemed sentient in the in like the choice of like deciding to be sneaky about it and then like I'm gonna get out of here and then I'm gonna do it. Yeah, and then biting him when he's like tucked up in his um sleeping bat.
WilsonSo yeah, but even though I feel like it it could have gone with him without killing him if it wanted to, but no, no.
CaptainAlso, when they find when his team members find him dead, so chill about it. They're like, oh wow.
WilsonDamn.
CaptainI'm like, bruh, big problem.
WilsonThey probably run in this a lot with like all the risks they take. They're like, uh, got another one.
CaptainThat is a not the field for me. This is like a BSL 4 type Ebola. Like, did he sign up for that? This photographer did not seem like he signed up for this because he was like very anti-spiders.
WilsonYeah, like it's like somebody forced him onto this trip where it's like, did nobody tell you these dangers?
CaptainNo idea. Uh anyway, yeah, he's dead. Ship him back to the US.
WilsonYeah, but we see a spider crawl into the coffin that they made for him.
CaptainYeah. Yeah. And when his wooden coffin shows up in what's this Kanaima or something?
WilsonYeah, Kanaima, California.
CaptainUm, oh, I didn't know we were in Cali.
WilsonHold on. This changes everything.
CaptainCalibonia.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm so when there's a cool shot of when his coffin is opened inside the what is that corner's office or the mortician or something in the mortuary. Um and like the okay, well, the guy that works there, Irv or whatever, always eating. Like that's the comedy part of the movie. He's like full eating a sandwich while he's like working in the morgue with like dead bodies. But um, there's a cool shot where like the coffin lid comes open and Irv looks at the body, and then like the camera kind of backs up, and Irv backs up and goes to the phone and says, Hey, I know we agreed on an open coffin, but like I don't think you're gonna want to do an open coffin. And uh Irv can't see it, but we can see like spider legs like wiggly, wiggly waggling from the inside of the coffin, like a spider's still alive in there. And then we also see like the like he's like a mummified body in there. Like he'd only it's only been like a few days since he died. What two like I don't know, two days or something, but he's like fully desiccated, dried out mummy form. Um, which you know, Irv is like, I don't know how they preserve bodies over there, but it's not uh not gonna fly. Yeah, this is not how he should look, but obviously they don't know that. I don't know. I thought the shot, the the shot of that was cool. They do a lot of cool shots with the spiders, um, or like spider like views that we don't that we see, but nobody else in the movie sees.
WilsonWhich I'm honestly impressed by. Like already this movie was like you're you and I were talking about this earlier, but I it's not the type of movie I'm expecting. Like I was I was expecting way worse effects or like cheesier uh yes, I was like, we're already not seeing that.
CaptainI was expecting big cheese, I was expecting um human-sized spiders. Like I I mean, we I come from a generation where like big ass spiders was like literally a movie that premiered. So like I was like expecting full camp, and they did not do that, which it was nice. Um it was nice to like see that.
WilsonYeah, it's just like and I'm not gonna say too much yet, but when you get to the end of the movie, I was like, so where's the big spider?
CaptainDude, I had the same thought. I was like, where's the big ass spider though? Um, but you know, to be fair to this movie, what is this, 35 years old? I mean, that was big, I guess.
WilsonI mean, they could have I mean there are other movies that go wild with huge monsters.
CaptainSo like they could have gone bigger. I agree. That was probably like my biggest one. I don't know if you saw my letterbox, but like I did see it. I'm like, I wanted more.
WilsonSo yeah, the spider gets out, you know, crawls out of the coffin, and then like he like saunters out that spider.
New Town Stress And Doctor Politics
WilsonIt's like yeah, and like a bird picks it up and carries it to this drops of this house, and that's where we see Jeff Daniel's family pull up because they just moved from San Francisco.
CaptainThe bird does not drop it, the bird dies.
WilsonOkay, well, yeah.
CaptainThe spider kills it, and then they both fall out of the hand out of the sky. Yes, and that's where we meet Jeff Daniel and his fam moving in.
WilsonYeah, so they're moving into this like countryside house after leaving the big city of San Francisco. Uh and I don't know, it's just like rundown house, and the spider basically moves into the barn.
CaptainYeah. Their little son, what's his name? Ross, is like literally, literally, literally doing everything except unpacking. I'm like, if you don't go unpack your fucking room, I'm like, what is happening? He's just running around. He's like, he's like, whoa, look at this dead bird. I'm like, can you please? This your moving fan with all your shit just is here. Like, you gotta do something.
WilsonYeah. Yeah. Anyway. Uh, and we find out pretty quickly that Jeff Daniels' character hates spiders.
CaptainHe has a trauma, he has a history.
WilsonYeah, but even when he's explaining it to his wife later, it's one of those, like, oh right, this story, like poor you.
CaptainHe's saying he like had a spider encounter when he was like two years old in a crib, and he like somehow remembers it because he like wanted to react to the spider, but like didn't have the ability to do that. He like froze. I was like, You were fucking two, but whatever.
WilsonWell, the wife's clearly heard it enough too, so yes.
CaptainUm, but he does during that like exposure therapy, she was trying to get him to like get over spiders. He gets um basically like this ladder, he was climbing the bar and breaks, and he gets um spider web flung into his mouth. I was like disgusting.
WilsonYeah, there's also a dead mouse in it, yeah.
CaptainYes, fully disgusting, fully disgusting. Freaks out reasonably so. Yeah. Um, but yeah, I think we also find out around the same time that Jet uh what's his character? Jennings, Dr. Jennings, so they moved here because the old so this little town has one doctor. That doctor's about to retire. Um, and then when Jennings talks to him the next morning, he's like, JK, I said I'm not going to. Um, and you're like, shout out luck, because like the whole reason they moved here was like that he would become the town doctor. Um so he's pretty upset.
WilsonYeah, that's so like a pretty dick move by the doctor, but at the same time, as Dr. Jennings, you don't like uproot your entire life and quit your job and move somewhere without like a written contract.
CaptainWrite down something, sign something. Yeah, like you're a doctor, you don't have like a lawyer that you would have like sign something. I don't know. Um, but there is one woman in the town that does not like that doctor, miss something.
WilsonHer name is Margaret.
CaptainMargaret, yes, Margaret Hollins, yes, and she basically is like happy that there's another doctor here. Um, and she's like, I'll be your first patient. Um, and she also said that she's gonna throw them a um, he's she's gonna throw Jennings a like welcome to the neighborhood party. Um and that'll help like get him new uh patients or more patients.
WilsonUm, so it's a successful party. Everyone loves Margaret later that night a spider sneaks in and kills her, too, which I was actually pretty upset about. Like, I liked her.
CaptainYeah. Also at the party, we find out that the dead guy is here, or his parents are there and they're like grieving him still. So the guy that got bitten and the spider came. Um, yeah, they're like drunk grieving him. Um and yeah, I did like Margaret actually. I was pretty upset. And then we also find out that Jeff has like a termite issue or like rotted with wood in his wine cellar downstairs around the same time. Um, but yeah, Margaret is dead, and then um I think Jennings goes over there to check on her, and that's and he's the one that finds her.
WilsonYes. So everyone's kind of calling him, you know, like Dr. Death. Um and then like he's kind of feuding in a way with one, the sheriff, but also the old doctor is like questioning all of his choices.
CaptainYeah, he he told Margaret, you don't need these heart uh blood pressure, yeah. That the old doctor put you on. And so he took them off them, and then she died from a heart attack, according to the old doctor. Um I know I'm not a doctor, but I I believe that like I don't know how you could possibly take her off those meds because like maybe the meds are the reason why her blood pressure is normal. You know what I mean? Like he was like, Your blood pressure is normal, we're gonna take you off these. And I'm like, right, but like she was on meds for that, so like, I don't know if you're a good doctor, just you know, uh yeah. So, like, yeah, basically there's like this rumor going around that he killed her by taking her off these pills. He wants to do an autopsy, and they're like, absolutely not. She does not want to be cut, she wouldn't want to be cut open.
Suspicious Deaths And Exterminator Energy
CaptainUm yeah, and then I think they introduced John Goodman's character around this time because he tr wants to try to get his wood treated in his wine cellar.
unknownRight?
WilsonRight, because like the floor is all like rotted. Yeah. And he's doing this like very interesting accent, which well, elevates the character. I like it.
CaptainYeah, I I wish I could, it's like very it's like very, yeah, like campy music like when the John Goodman is on screen, it's very like um, yeah, kind of like sitcommy or like um, I don't know. They like put all this music around his character. Like he's supposed to be the comedy role in the movie.
WilsonYeah. He's like this goofy, aloof, very knowledgeable exterminator.
CaptainYeah, he doesn't find any bugs in their house, so I don't know how knowledgeable.
WilsonBut well, they weren't the the spiders weren't in the basement yet.
CaptainWell, oh that's right, they were in the barn. There's something in the barn. I'm it's just such a fun way to speak. Okay, um, and then well, they also call him Dr. Death because of what happens with the basketball team, where he like his neighbor, the gym coach. Okay, I don't understand this scene. He there he's like, I'll get you more clients, his neighbor. So he goes to the basketball to the basketball court locker room with all the kids, and they all drop trout, and he like has them all turn and cough in front of each other, and he just like cups them in a line. I'm like, when the fuck does that happen? In a line?
WilsonYeah, also he wasn't wearing gloves, and like I feel like you're not supposed to Yeah, again, not sure you need to change your gloves.
CaptainNot sure how good of a doctor he is.
WilsonUm it was a different time.
CaptainUm yeah, he has some alternate cough in like one go, and I'm like, okay, but what if somebody like if that's to check for a hernia, right?
WilsonI think so.
CaptainOkay, but like what if one somebody did have a hernia, then you're gonna have to like tell everybody their like business in front of everybody? Like I'm just like, where's the logistical? I don't know. Anyway, that's counted as he like examined them, and then one of them dies, and again, they're like, Oh, well, he was the last doctor to examine them, so um, Dr. Death.
WilsonYeah, but it's like he like the the football kid died on the field.
CaptainSo he got smashed. So like they they play oh sorry, but not basketball, football. They were playing, yeah, they played it like a round of football. The kid that died, okay. So he had a spider that was crawled into his helmet or whatever, but he literally got smashed, like like totally like collision smashed between like eight people. I was like, I'm sorry, that's Dr. Jennings' fault that he died. What about the fucking collision that happened on the field, bruh?
WilsonYeah. Like they the bite and that collision happened at the same time. So somehow it's the doctor's fault.
CaptainYeah, I I again I feel like these speders they do. They have like a sentient because like they're really sneaky about it. It's like they killed Margaret, and uh you can also blame it on the fact that like she came off these pills, and they killed this football kid, but you can also blame it off the fact that he got like collided with. So it's like they're like, you know, sentient intelligent spiders.
WilsonLittle smarty pants.
CaptainUm and then right after that, the old doctor has a quote unquote stroke, but he got bitten by a spider too.
WilsonYeah. And then his wife dies like the next day or something, right? Or doesn't she die?
CaptainUh I don't remember.
WilsonI just remember she doesn't.
CaptainI think they said the wife said she got like the wife reported that he got bitten by a spider, so she didn't die immediately. Right. Um, but basically, Jennings can tell that something weird is going on. He's like, there's no reason. Um and and basically he's like, I'm getting autopsies done, and we're exuming everybody else that died, like something is going on, and this doesn't make any sense. And the sheriff of the town right doesn't want to do that.
WilsonThe sheriff doesn't like this new guy like at all.
CaptainYeah. Um yeah, just and then oh yes, and then he realizes it's spider bites, and that's when he calls Dr. Atherton.
WilsonYeah, and Atherton's like, well, I'm not gonna come up myself because it
Spider Science And The Queen Hunt
Wilsonmight be nothing. So he sends his assistant, Chris, first, and they go hunting for spiders, and they do find them, and they're like, Okay, yeah, you need to come up here.
CaptainYeah, Chris is like, um, this is a big problem. These are like real spiders. It's the whole like um it's the sex organs thing, right? They said that those those poisonous spiders don't have any sex, don't have any like external sex organs.
WilsonYeah, so basically there's like a a main one, like a queen spider or whatever, and then at least for these couple generations, the all the offspring cannot uh um have offspring.
CaptainUntil like, but I guess eventually they Yeah, there's like a new queen, and then yeah, and then yeah. Um, and I think um I don't remember if it was Atherton or somebody else says, but they're like, this is the type of spider where um if we like didn't do anything about it, it would just go from town to town, like killing and killing. Yeah, because like while they can't reproduce yet, they will be able to, and then they'll like spread and then like there'll be like five queens in five different cities, like yeah. Um yeah, we do see another um a couple of John Gidman scenes um where he like uh goes to somebody else's house and tries to kill some spiders, but then when they're searching for spiders, he also oh he does smush one. Um but he they also like bring him into the team to help since he is the town exterminator, like to help um you know eliminate the problem or get rid of it.
WilsonYeah, and I you know, uh when his character first came on, I thought he was just going to be like the comic relief dumb character that like dies pretty quickly, but that is not the case. He's like kind of smart and he sticks around.
CaptainYeah, I mean he was famous by this point, like he was on Roseanne for Yeah, but I don't think he was like super famous. When was Roseanne? I thought he was like a breakout star. Oh, that started in 1988. So I don't know. I mean, did I watch the show? No.
WilsonUm yeah, I watched it. I mean, obviously not not when it was on, but wasn't he like the breakout like funny guy? Or well, I I mean I guess he he was, but you know, by the time I watched the show, I had already seen like movies he was in and I didn't know the timing.
CaptainSo it's like when was Swimstone? Oh 94, that would have been after. Okay. I always mixed up this is so bad. Oh I always mixed up Roseanne with Alf. But there was like another.
WilsonYeah, the the puppet.
CaptainYeah, but wasn't he on like another he had his own sitcom just like that, no?
WilsonI guess. I thought it was a talk show. I honestly have never seen it.
CaptainOh, it was a talk show? Oof.
WilsonI I can't be sure though.
CaptainUm no, it says sitcom 86 to 1990. About an alien who crash lands in a ghost. In the garage of a Cerebben family's home, and he has to hide from the government. Yeah, probably not like Roseanne, but for some reason. That and well, I know happy days, because that's a little different. But again, it's like the same. It's like sitcom before my time. But anyway. Not important. Um I do, I I did note that Jennings um is really intelligent in this movie in the sense that he, even though he doesn't have all the pieces, like us as the audience have all the pieces, he really puts together the fact that this guy died and a spider hitched right in his coffin from Venezuela, and it's clearly the Atherton spider that he's talking about that you know can do all this crazy poisoning. I'm like, I'm surprised you kind of put that together, dude. Like, I don't know. If I had the same knowledge that you had, like, I don't know if I would have been able to do that. But so he's smart in that regard.
WilsonYes, and that's where they go through um like after everyone kind of teams up, that's where they talk through like this is how the spiders reproduce, this is what we're trying to stop. If we can find the queen, take her out before she makes offspring that can reproduce, we'll be good.
CaptainYeah, and they pull that map out and they realize that like all of the attacks center around the Jennings house, specifically their barn, which we already saw a spider started living there.
WilsonYeah, so Atherton goes in the barn by himself. He's like way too nonchalant about this. A lot of these characters are, but uh I know that's what he he dies in there, like a spider just like gets him.
CaptainHe knows that these are killing, like, yeah, they've already killed like five people in the town. I'm like, you know, these are deadly lethal spiders, no hazmat suit, no gloves, no mat, I mean, just nothing. Just raw dog in it.
WilsonYep.
CaptainTerrible.
WilsonYeah. Um, but they when they find him in the barn, they also find out that like they're not that's like that's not where the queen is, and they realize it's in the basement because they earlier they said like spiders like dark and damp. Exactly what the basement is.
CaptainThe wine cellar, yeah.
WilsonYeah, yeah. Well, he he calls it the wine cellar, but it's just a basement.
CaptainHis uh yeah, his dream wine cellar, if he could get it together, yeah.
WilsonYeah.
House Infestation And Basement Showdown
WilsonSo basically they run into the house, they realize it's there. He's trying to get his family out, but the spiders, they're all like now working together and they're like infesting the house.
CaptainYeah, I wasn't sure if like some of the eggs started hatching because there was like so many spiders at the end in that house.
WilsonYeah, so many and you know, they the spiders could have bitten them if they wanted to, like they got so close to them and they can jump or whatever. Like they weren't trying very hard.
CaptainWell, you know, again, I feel like they're like senting it, they were like toying with them. Or like T. It's like um the guy from Saw on the bike. You want to play a game?
WilsonIt's like Yeah. Uh so he does get them out a window, but he uh Jeff Daniels character falls through um his like the floor on his house.
CaptainYeah, like the rock floor, yeah.
WilsonYeah. Um, and this starts off like his one-on-one battle with the queen, which is like the size of like a kitten.
CaptainYeah, like a rabbit. I was like, damn, I wanted something beat.
WilsonYeah, I was like, first the first I thought like it was a fake out, like, oh, he's gonna kill this pretty quick and be like, oh, we're done. And then this like monstrous. But then like after this extended, which was fine, but extended fight scene, I was like, okay, there's no way we're gonna have another extensive fight scene.
CaptainYeah, I agree with you. I wanted like at least a like large dog-sized spider. I wanted something that he really had to like wrestle. Um this one, yeah. I mean, like it's yeah, like you said, the fight scene's not bad. I mean, they do a whole rigmarole. I uh one of the scenes that actually made me laugh the most in this movie is the spider. He like tries to hit the spider with his shovel, and when he pulls the sh brings the shovel back up to like look for it to see if he like got it, the spider's still on the shovel. And when he realizes the spider's on the shovel, he goes, ah, and he like throws the whole shovel. And the way he screamed and like the way he threw it was like actually very, very funny.
WilsonUm I also liked in that scene they did a lot of close-ups on just the like spider's eyes. Like it was clearly just like spying on him. Yeah, it was like I feel like it was comical in that way.
CaptainYeah, it was like glaring him, like yeah, glaring and like staring him down, yeah.
WilsonUm, but basically he ends up setting the egg sack on fire, or and then I think electrocuting the queen, also setting on fire, and then shooting it with a nail gun.
CaptainYes. He he sets the the spider on fire and then it leaps out of the fire while it's blazing. Like the spider itself is run rolling around, running around blazing, and he gets it somehow in the air again, he like flick flings it up, and then he he like shoots it mid-air with a nail gun, and then it's yeah, he like nails it into a wall with that shot. So yes.
WilsonAnd then they get outside, or he gets outside, and uh this part was interesting. I was like, I guess all the spider other spiders just die, but I think they were trying to say that the exterminator got them all, which I was like, Yeah, well, that seems a little unlikely, but okay, we'll go with that.
CaptainI mean, yeah, it said that he had been spraying them since like the whole start of trying to get the family out. It looked like he was using liquid nitrogen, like regular poison doesn't kill them. He like had he was like, I'll bring out the big guns.
WilsonAnd it was like Yeah, I was like, is that some acid? I don't know what that was.
CaptainOh I thought it was like liquid nitrogen. I was like, that's dangerous for everybody, but all right. Um, yeah, because one scene he sprays them with poison the spider with poison, and then it doesn't actually kill the spider, it just keeps moving. And he's like, You motherfucker.
WilsonUm yeah, so all the spiders are dead. The next scene is actually moving boxes again. Jennings and his wife, they're back in San Francisco moving into an apartment. Yeah, and there's you know, basically two earthquakes, and they're fine with that.
CaptainOh, yeah, they were like dealing with the earthquake is like NBD compared to what we just dealt with.
WilsonYeah. And I you know, I actually kind of like this ending, and I the movie didn't end on like a oh, everything's perfect. It was like uh, you know what, we're gonna be practical. The wife's gonna quit her like dream job of painting or photography or whatever, and she goes back and she's now a uh was it stockbroker? I forget what they said.
CaptainSomething like that. Whatever in San Francisco. I didn't I didn't mind the ending of the movie either. I I think it was kind of like yeah, I don't know. It was fine. It was it was fun.
WilsonYeah, I did like that at the end it looked like that what is it? He said that like a $128 bottle of wine was just like it got tipped over on the earthquake and was just pouring wine all over the floor.
CaptainOh yeah. When he was doing the fight scene with the spider, he was like throwing wine bottles and he picked up the one that he had always wanted, yeah, like $120, and he's like, not the chateau. And he puts it down, he picks up a different bottle to throw at the spider. Um I also think it's so funny that a hundred and twenty dollar bottle of wine was like our prize possession. I'm like, sir, I could I could go like three blocks away and find a restaurant selling a bottle of wine for like $150.
WilsonLike a little different now.
CaptainI don't know what the inflation rate is of like 35 years ago. I guess I could look it up, but um, I just uh it's just like really in your face, I guess.
WilsonYeah, I wonder how much their movie or movie, their house in theory cost would be like.
CaptainOh yeah. That was like a pretty big house with like an acre of land.
WilsonNeeded some fixing, and it was the town in the middle of nowhere, but okay, yeah. So that was the movie. Um do it so num Nums, yeah.
CaptainIt says the inflation rate cumulatively from the last 35 years is 154%. Still, I mean, that's a pretty expensive bottle of wine to have. Yeah.
WilsonYeah. I mean, I still wouldn't buy a $128 bottle of wine, but because today that would be like almost a $200 bottle of wine.
CaptainSo yeah. I don't think I've ever bought a $200 bottle of wining. No, like not something that like, no, not that expensive. Maybe from like a restaurant, but it was like, you know, a Michelin or whatever, but we're not usually buying the bottle either, so whatever.
WilsonUm you want some uh what or what?
CaptainI was just gonna say, yeah, I do want the gums and the goose, but um, um, but I was just gonna say, my a big takeaway about this to me is I feel like okay, Jennings has arachnophobia essentially. Like that's that's why it's called this, but I feel like this would really justify yourrachnophobia. Like, literally lethal spiders that like tore your life apart. I'm like totally just you have you have your arachnophobia. You you have it, dude. Like I get it. You deserve it.
WilsonBut he like kind of got over it at the end because like there are all those scenes of him struggling with himself and then he like gets over it, yeah, attacks the spiders.
CaptainYeah, I just feel like I just feel like I feel like everybody would have it by the you know at the end.
WilsonI mean, if you read the reviews on this movie, they're like, this was a core memory as a child, and why am I afraid of spiders?
CaptainReally?
WilsonYeah, interesting. I mean, I didn't watch this movie when I was younger, but yeah, neither did I.
CaptainAnd I feel like wait, you have seen this movie before though?
WilsonNo, I thought I did. There was a movie I was confusing it with, and I haven't figured out what it is yet, but yeah, I haven't seen this.
CaptainIt's not that movie you sent me today on Instagram.
WilsonNo, it wasn't that one.
CaptainSpookies or something?
WilsonYeah.
CaptainNighttime. What is this? Uh oh yeah, spookies, I was right. Um yeah, I don't, I don't, I definitely have not seen this movie before. I can see, I don't know. People always say like certain movies when they were kids scared them, like horror movies. And I was like, dude, I don't know. I always loved horror movies.
WilsonI don't I mean, I never really I mean I I always love them, but there are several that have scared me.
CaptainLike Gave Me Nightmares? Like, not really. Anyway, let's give me the numbs, give me the
Ratings Then Real Spider Behind Scenes
Captaingoose.
WilsonThe goose. Uh all right, so numb nums. Um, the budget was 22 million, the box office was 53.2, so it did okay.
CaptainYeah, that's pretty good. That's that's the double they need.
WilsonAudience was 93. Um, Rotten Tomatoes was erp. Sorry, I said that all wrong. Rotten tomatoes. Critics said 93%, and the audience said 54%.
CaptainI don't know why the audience is so maybe people just don't like spiders.
WilsonI don't know. Let me see. The letterbox score was 3.3, which is yeah, that's fine for letterboxed. Um all right, some hot goss. You said there was extensive. Uh, let's see here.
CaptainSo a lot of the shots in the movie they use real spiders, which was uh just different. Like it's just kind of fun because like it was different. Um, but they like went to extensive lengths to like make sure these spiders were like cared for, which was nice.
WilsonYeah, I'm reading this first one that like again how paramount the safety was for the spiders, but like the scene where John Goodman's character sprays the spider, then steps on it, um, they they wouldn't do a lot of work to not harm the spider. So they had like a dummy spider they sprayed, and then when he stepped on it, he was wearing like his boots had a hollow sole. So that the the spider would just curl up inside and not be hurt, yeah. Yeah. Um the spiders that they used in the film when they weren't like models or dummies or whatever, uh, they're just a harmless species from New Zealand. Even though they look kind of scary.
CaptainI mean, I can tell you the Huntsman spider from Australia looks terrifying and then also harmless.
WilsonUm the big spider they used was a bird-eating tarantula. Do they actually eat birds?
CaptainYeah, there's like one species of tarantula that's big enough to eat them, yeah.
WilsonIs it the bird-eating tarantula?
CaptainI would assume so. Um I was wondering if there was anything in here. There's a scene in this movie where a spider calls out of somebody's nose, like a dead person's nose, and that legit looks like a full regular spider. And I was curious if there was something in here about that scene. I see the sound effect they used for crunching a spider was a crunching a couple of potato chips.
WilsonThere were some good crunches in there.
CaptainThere really were. Um yeah, I see that. Oh wow, when they had to shot dead spiders, they used bodies of arachnids that had died from natural causes. They're like really. Well, apparently they had a entomologist, what's his name? Kutcher or something? Student. Yeah, he's like a famed entomologist. So I'm guessing he was like, you know, there for like humane use. Spiders.
WilsonYeah, but like somebody had to hire him to make sure like that happens to like somebody above.
CaptainThat is true. I don't think spiders are covered under any like legal like laws. Like uh bugs are not um like as long as they're like vertebrae, they're like yeah, I don't know. Um it says that they were the production required two oh, you already talked about two different species. They said that um the bird eating one, they named him Big Bob.
WilsonOh yeah, I did see that.
CaptainThat's funny. Did you see anything in here about like a spider crawling out of somebody's nose? I was like, how did they do that?
WilsonI mean, could I just pulled it out on strings?
CaptainI guess, but it looked so real.
WilsonI mean, but it was a model head, so like they could have had a spider.
CaptainOh, not a real person. I'm stupid. I'm stupid and them done.
WilsonIt looked good, but I think if you looked closely, it was like they switched his head.
CaptainOkay. That makes sense.
WilsonThe animatronic for the the big spider, I guess big Bob. Um, that was worked on by Jamie Heinemann from Mythbusters, like obviously before Mythbusters.
CaptainYeah, the guy that built everything on the show. Yeah, that's fun. Um, I'm like really surprised by how much work they put into these. Um, yeah, I don't know. Um oh, and there was a white mouse that was shown in this movie. Um, but he was not actually hurt in this film, supposedly. So they even cared about the mouse. I'm guessing that was a prop dead carcass when they showed it. You don't really get they don't it's not really close up, so yeah. Anyway.
Julian Sands Story And Tone Notes
CaptainOh, and here's a story about um Julian Sands and how he went missing in California.
WilsonOh, go for it. I didn't seen that one yet.
CaptainOh, yeah. So he so this was in 2023, so I think he was already in his 60s. Um, or maybe he was approaching 60, but anyway, he like loved being he loved going on like these mountainous adventures. Um and anyway, he like enjoyed hiking a lot in in treacherous nature. Um, but he went missing on a mountain hike in the Mount Baldy area of California, um, an area that was known for violent storms and avalanches. And then he did not call in a return, and his body was found five months later um when other hikers were in the same area. But it said like no exact cause of death could be determined, but obviously just because he was out there in the body was out in like long exposure for such a long time. But um, I mean, I'm assuming he just I don't know got like lost or I don't know, got taken by the extreme uh inclement weather, I guess. He has such an interesting face. Like modely with his like face.
WilsonYes, he does have very much a model face.
CaptainYeah. But anyway, hey he he died in um January. It took like two or a week for his car to be found, and then uh they searched for him, like a uh lots of people searched for him. Um it says that he he was believed to be transversing the Baldy Bowl. Um anyway, there were evidence of avalanches in the region. Um on the 11th day after Sans went missing, the Sans family raised a statement saying that they were praising the heroic search teams and their efforts. But you know, after like 80 search and rescue volunteers descended, they didn't find anything, and that was January, and then June 23rd is when these other hikers um found or sorry, June 24th. These other hikers, yeah, these other hikers um found him. So that's crazy.
WilsonThat's like that's wild and sad.
CaptainYeah. He was doing what he loved. I don't know. Um any other there's so much hot goose. Is any of this like cool or interesting? Anything else?
WilsonUm not really like though I did see a note it kind of along the lines of what we were talking about earlier, that when Jeff Daniels came on, it was more of a serious movie, and both he and the director wanted a more ironic tone. So they I guess they watched a lot of Alfred Alfred Hitchcock and Jaws to get the tone that they wanted.
CaptainOh, interesting.
WilsonBut yeah, other than that, I didn't really see anything that's like super noteworthy.
Final Scores Next Movie And PPE
CaptainI'm just really surprised by how much care they took um to the spiders. Like it makes me give them makes me want to like raise their score a little.
WilsonOh, bump it up, okay.
CaptainI mean, I kinda wanna bump it. I don't know. So I gave it a 3.5 on letterboxed, and that's mostly because like I wanted a bigger spider at the end. Um and um yeah, and like I don't know, some of the scenes are I was just like, this doesn't even fucking make like what? Which I feel like uh like uh you know some of the weird stuff, but like I I didn't mind I still liked the movie, so like I was like alright, 3.5. What's the average letterback score? 3.3?
WilsonI think it was I think that's what I saw.
CaptainUm, I can actually look at the review part. They I never you said scroll all the way down. I can actually like do that. I never do that.
WilsonHell yeah.
CaptainUm Damn, you gave this a really good score.
WilsonI liked this movie.
CaptainI'm gonna bump it a little because I did I I I enjoy the post or the production um how much they cared. So I'm gonna give it a four. Um I think 93 is way too generous, in my opinion, but it's still a good movie. I think I'd give it, yeah, like uh 78.
WilsonOkay. Yeah. I'm like 85.
CaptainHmm. Alright. You just love spiders.
WilsonI I don't know what it is, like, even though I was disappointed by the like not having a huge spider, I I like I I really liked the movie. Like the you know, everyone was competent for the most part. Um I liked and then the ending like we talked about too, it wasn't just like a little happy ending.
CaptainIt was like or they leave the door, like they leave the door open for like, oh, there's still spider eggs cooking, like that.
WilsonWell no, more so just like I liked how they all right, we'll just move back to our old life. And I don't know, I just it felt realistic and oh and the song in the credits was a banger. That's actually my razor glass.
CaptainThe song in the credits?
WilsonI just like wasn't expecting. I mean, I I don't really listen to Jimmy Buffett, but he I think he made the song for this movie.
CaptainOh, really?
WilsonYes. And I was like, this looks really fun.
CaptainDo you have it on like Spotify or something?
WilsonNo, it's not on Spotify or Apple Music. It's on YouTube.
CaptainOh, wow.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainThat's a shame because they're probably not going to go find. It's fine. My raise of glass. You don't know what my raise glass is.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainOkay. Mine was when Jennings put together that like everything was, you know, what everything was. Um, he wanted to go talk to the mortician because he was the guy that would have first opened the coffin and found the spider or released the spider. Um, and he like they're speeding to the guy's house, and while they're speeding there, we see clips of the mortician and his wife, and they're like um getting some popcorn ready and they're gonna watch prices right together, and they're like all curled up, and there's a spider in the popcorn bowl. Anyway, by the time Jennings gets there, they are we see a shot, full shot when the door opens of like these two curled up, like you know, this couple on a couch, but they're like, I don't know, it's a very shocking shot of like both of them dead that I wasn't I wasn't expecting, so I was just kind of like like I was like kind of shocked. Uh and then that's when you see the spider that crawls out of the guy's nose, and I was just like, I don't know, something about that was like very shocking. I wasn't expecting both of them to be dead. Um, I mean, I guess I should have, but something about a full scene of like both bodies, it's like from top almost from above, so it's like top down.
WilsonUm, but yeah, you can tell that they were like mid-life and they were just like they were yeah, they were watching their show instacome their popcorn. Yeah.
CaptainUm, and I think that was my race to glass.
WilsonWould absolutely recommend. Oh, my other Dave over here.
CaptainMy other hot glass is apparently they released a video game version of this movie a year later in 1991, and I was so curious. Like, for you play more games than I do. Like, is that have you ever heard about that or anything?
WilsonI've never heard about it.
CaptainI mean, what would that be on the Atari?
WilsonI mean it said it was um for old cussing computers.
CaptainOld cussing. Oh I thought that was like a brand. I was like, what?
WilsonOh, oh, sorry. No, no, no.
CaptainI was like, I don't know.
WilsonThere is a full walkthrough of the game on YouTube.
CaptainOh god.
WilsonYeah, it's just like 2D side scrolling.
CaptainYeah, I I would also recommend this movie. It was fun, it was fun, yeah, it was different. Um, it was done well. I feel like all the components come together. A lot of movies they like throw shit in there that like doesn't it's not important, and I feel like every piece that was layered in here, like it mattered.
WilsonYes.
CaptainUm, like they talked like like I remember watching the movie being like, why is Margaret's heart medication mentioned or blood pressure medication literally was mentioned like four times before her death, and I was like, what the fuck? Why do they keep mentioning this? And then it's like, oh, she died, and they're blaming it on taking her off these meds. I was like, oh, and then like that just examples of that just kept happening where they were like layering them on perfectly, and I was like, oh, everything clicks together. Do you want to tell us what we're doing next time?
WilsonYeah, next time we're uh doing the 1998 film, uh Disturbing Behavior. Um what something something creepy about a new high school? Is that what that yeah?
CaptainThat's my brief um that's my brief little description.
WilsonJust enough to get you enticed.
CaptainWe'll see how the reviews are interesting. Advice, Wilson, from this movie?
WilsonIt's a little tricky because everyone was fairly competent or at least trying to be helpful.
CaptainI mean, I feel like I feel like I mentioned this already, but and uh this has been advice in other movies, but like where's the PPE? I feel like that would save a lot of lives.
WilsonOh you know what I mean?
CaptainLike the masks or you know, like a suit suit, the gloves. Yeah, I just feel like that's the PPE. Yes, use the PPE.
