Diet Coke Debates And Movie Picks
CaptainI'm spilling.
WilsonWhat are we opening?
CaptainA can.
WilsonMy can't empty.
CaptainI saw you clinking around with a glass and everything earlier. I was like, who is he?
WilsonDid have a glass, but now it's a Diet Coke. It's empty.
CaptainOoh. Gonna have to refill.
WilsonI, you know, for a long time I was like semi-against drinking soda, and I was like, I don't understand how people drink Diet Coke this often. And then I like, I was like, I'll just try one. And the next week it's like, oh, well, you know, maybe I can get two. Like it's just we're buying almost.
CaptainI mean, we're buying like the packs of cans from the store. Like it's part of our grocery run.
WilsonYeah. I just bought or just picked up a what 36 pack from Costco.
CaptainThat's what you need. That is what what you need. The um I don't know if I the I I can't remember if I had one on the podcast, but the convenience store by me, they sell they sell uh Diet Cokes and like Coke's ears, um, like tall boy cans. And I one of my friends came by and saw that had a tall, like came to the house and was like, Do you have a fucking tall boy of Diet? I was like, yeah, they're great.
WilsonLike it's not that wild, but I still feel like you know, if somebody showed up at a party and it's like, yeah, I just pounded some tall like two tall boys and you just like roll up with like a diet coke.
CaptainI mean, you know, I always like my coups, my little koozies, so how would they know?
WilsonDo those fit the tall boys?
CaptainI think well this one's like knitted, so it I think it I think it does fit.
WilsonThe other one's Is that a tall boy that you're drinking now?
CaptainNo, but yeah, some of the I don't know if all the koozies would fit, those like really like spandexy ones. But I love them. You love a koos. Otherwise your little thinkies get cold, you know?
WilsonThat's true. I mean, but it's hot enough outside right now that's like oh mind.
CaptainI'm I think I'm I see you have things in here and I want to know what these are. I really want to know what these are.
WilsonThe first one I just heard about today, uh, because we went to um the pool after work and uh we saw somebody we knew and we were talking about like, oh, you know, I was gonna watch a movie tonight. It's supposed to be pretty terrible. Um and then, you know, they mentioned about this movie called Survival Island. Um let me let me raise you the premise really quick. I was gonna look it up. Okay. Um it's A Weekend to Dismember. A group of teens on a remote island for a scavenger hunt, accidentally unleash vengeful spirits from a cursed pinata and must fight to survive.
CaptainThat sounds incredible. I have not heard of this movie.
WilsonI haven't either, but like has Jamie Presley in it. That's probably the most well-known person I see in here. But I was like, okay, I'd watch that.
CaptainYeah, I yeah. I don't think I've heard of this. Like I said, I delete movies that have animal deaths in them for the most part, but I don't think this was ever on the list. Let's add it to the list.
WilsonHell yeah. I don't recognize the other movies that uh the directors did.
CaptainDid we do killer pinata, like the horror movie? As one of our kooky movies?
WilsonNo. Uh no. I don't know about a killer pinata movie.
CaptainOh, it was carousel or something? Is that the one I'm thinking of?
WilsonOh, I think we talked about I don't think we did.
CaptainWe do like one really kooky movie a season. So it's like the Killer Sofa one or the Thankskilling.
WilsonOh, that's a good one.
CaptainAnd I don't remember I thought we did one. There is one that is about a killer pinata, and there's one about a killer carousel. And I don't know which one we did.
WilsonUm Okay, I see I don't think we did carousel. This does not look familiar.
CaptainUh oh. Am I lying?
WilsonThis looks like it could cost like two dollars to make.
CaptainAm I lying?
WilsonI mean, we did movies of this caliber, like several of them.
CaptainLike what?
WilsonYeah. I didn't think you were gonna. Okay, sorry. Well, I like Thanksgiving.
CaptainSo we did Thanksgiving, and then we did Night Before Easter. That movie was terrible, terrible. Then we did Teeth was our kookie movie. Um we did oh, hashtag horror, also terrible. Yeah, Tammy and the T-Rex, that one's good.
WilsonOh, yeah.
CaptainI actually did not mind that movie. Um, I don't remember what I rated it. Okay, we did Killer Sofa and we did Oh, Llama Geddon, that's what I'm thinking of.
WilsonOh, yeah, yeah. That one feels very much like what, like Killer Limp Pinata probably.
CaptainYes, uh, that's that that's yes, because it has like a stuffed llama for most for parts that they can't use llama. Um I don't remember chopping them all that much. Do you?
WilsonThat was semi-reasent.
CaptainI know, but like I don't remember that shit. Do you?
WilsonUm well I saw it when I was younger.
CaptainSo like I from way back. Way back. Didn't we do Killer's Topa?
WilsonWe did.
CaptainOh wait, I already listed that one, but didn't I? I don't know.
WilsonYou do, yeah, I think so.
CaptainMath is all right, let's go shopping. Okay. Um, oh, the stuff was our cookie movie this season. That's what I marked it. Yep. Okay. Sorry, what okay, Survivor Island, yes. Love that. Pippin on the list. Uh oh, I am out. This is not a movie for the podcast, but I just told you I watched Mouse Hunt, which I guess it just didn't pop up. I have a feeling that that title did not sound very appealing to me when I was a kid, which is why I never watched it. But it is so good. And it is like talk about kooky, but like, dude, I like love that movie. Have you watched it?
WilsonNo, like I don't because I told you I remember the art. I remember the out the artwork, like the cover art, but I've never I don't think I've ever seen this.
CaptainOkay, they use like 60 real mice and they like train the shit of shit out of them to like do all this stuff. And uh the whole time I'm just like fascinated by the mouse training that must have happened. And then there was like this famous um stunt choreographer in Hollywood that does m animal stunt coordinating, like that's his job. I think he retired like five years ago, but like he was in the industry for like 30 years, and like other animals that you've seen on TV, he probably has something to do with them. Okay, and yeah, he like trained every animal under the sun and he does like he's done like all these famous um like really big brands that have like animals in commercials, like he was associated with like a bunch of them. Um I was just like fascinated by the amount of mouse training to get them to do all the things that he needed them to do.
WilsonUm well now I'm kind of interested, and I'll probably watch this movie.
CaptainIt's also so funny.
WilsonI I mean it has Nathan Lane, so like that's probably I believe.
CaptainYeah, I actually really liked it. It is mouse focused, so there is um some scenes that uh do appear to be anti-cat, just so you're aware. There are some there are some anti-cat things in the movie, but I actually really liked it a lot.
WilsonI might be able to put that aside.
CaptainOkay, good. Oh, I see you already rated the turning. Did Finn just watch Ratatouille? Is that what your other thing is?
WilsonWell, partly, so um, since I since we last pod podcasted, I watched nine movies. Um, and it was like, okay, let me let me tell you some of these because I think it'll be you watch nine movies in like 12 days.
CaptainYeah, bro. I love it. Give it to me.
WilsonUm, well, disclosure day, that was okay. We did watch Hoppers, it's very good. Um, because I know you told me to watch it. I love that movie. Uh um I watched uh Netflix rom com. Um, but um the new scary movie, not good. And then Ratatouille. I finally saw Ratatouille. Finn had already seen it. Uh, and this is just the first time for me. Um it was really good. I think it was hyped up a ton because everyone was like, you know, Ratatouille's like the best movie ever made.
CaptainYeah, uh it is really good though, but I hear what you're saying. There's some hype.
WilsonYeah. There is some hype. Um but yeah, that was really good. And I thought you'd want to hear that. And also I can stop getting in trouble for not seeing Hopper's a ratatouille or whatever. I'm trying to go to your I feel like there was something you and um uh Lieutenant were like joking about like some ratatouille. You were like riffing off of something from that movie. I'm sure, I'm sure. And I I I'm so curious what it was, but you'd have to ask her.
CaptainI I don't rem I mean like well last time she was on the pod, you mean maybe, or like I don't know, it could be any of the times she was on.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainWell, I don't know how I'm gonna get that information to you. Um how do I I I'm like literally clicking on every button. How do I see your just your activity again? Where's my follower? Okay, there we go. Okay. I just wanted to like see the list of your diary.
WilsonThat is hard to get to for a person. Oh, so I watched Steel Magnolias for the first time. That was so sad. I thought it was gonna be like a campy fun movie.
CaptainI heard the movie is supposed to be sad, but I've never watched it.
WilsonIt's really good, but yeah, it's like alright, I'm just gonna like ball my eyes out.
CaptainOh. Not a movie for me. Wait, so the Pixar and shit was just, oh, you watched.
WilsonYeah, just that I watched those movies, and even though I don't know if they are they both Pixar? I forget who's like everybody owns each other now, right?
CaptainI mean, I don't know. Yeah, that's true. Everything's one big glop. Um you're taking a dog picture. Oh, sorry, maybe she moved, but she got all she was like all smushy in the face, and I wanted to get a picture, but she moved.
WilsonOh, you have to.
CaptainBut no, she's all smushy in the face. Are we ready? Do you wanna yeah?
WilsonDo you want to bring us in?
Welcome And Why This Feels X-Files
CaptainUh welcome to the 198th episode of the Red Rome Podcast, where we review horror movies while enjoying an adult beverage or two. And I'm Captain.
WilsonAnd I'm Wilson.
CaptainAnd this week we're reviewing the 1998. Oh wow, that's weird with the no episode number. Like it's 198. Yeah. 1998 teen sci-fi psychological horror disturbing behavior. So I didn't know if you like looked at this, but the director is David Nutter, who was the director and the producer for X-Files. So like it was supposed to be giving that vibe, kind of.
WilsonOh, you know what? Now that you mentioned this, it's just a long X-Files episode.
CaptainRight? And I knew that ahead of time. It's not a read. But there's some more Tia after. But yeah, he the writer was Scott Rosenberg. So that guy also did Con Air in 1997, Gone in 60 Seconds, Kangaroo Jack, and the new Jumanji movies. Um, I don't think I ever saw his old movies, like Con Air and Gone in 60 Seconds. Loved Kangaroo Jack as a kid, though.
WilsonYes. Uh, I don't think I've seen Conair or Gone in 60 Seconds either.
CaptainBut like, aren't they fame? Like they are famous, right?
WilsonOh yeah. People cuss and love those movies. Okay.
CaptainI don't mind the new Jumanji movies either. I know, like, I mean the old one's good, but I actually don't mind the new ones.
WilsonI haven't seen a single one. Was it wait, was Will Farrell in one of them? Like the first one?
CaptainOh.
WilsonOr no.
CaptainOh, you're asking me to remember something from 2017.
WilsonI just have this memory. I I must be thinking of another movie, but like a giant mosquito is on Will Farrell's back and it like gets the size of a basketball, and then he passes out, but he lands on it and like blood flies in the air.
CaptainThat sounds like it could be. I watched the movie when it was new. Um let's see. Do you mind?
WilsonOh, it was this says it's Land of the Lost from 2009. Uh I didn't know that was a movie. Well, I mean, I guess I did at some point, but I don't remember that.
CaptainYou knew the scene. Yeah. And that's all you need to know. Um, so there's a lot of people in the city. Um, there's a lot of people that I think are famous. I don't know how many people in this movie are I guess there's actually a decent number of people that are important too. It's not just like a focus on like one nuclear family
Cast Notes And Early Career Trivia
Captainor something. Um, so I kind of gave up towards the end because I was like, I can't go through this stream. But I think I hit the high notes, and that's what we need, you know?
WilsonOkay, yeah.
CaptainSo we have Steve as our main character, played by James Mariston. Um he is mostly known for his, or he gained fame for his portrayal of Cyclops in the X-Men film series, and for his role in the notebook, Superman Returns, Hairspray, Enchanted, 27 Dresses, he's an Anchorman. Um, so that was like all of his like early or 2000s work. I feel like I saw him in the X-Men movies, but God, it's been forever. You should revisit that.
WilsonUh most of them. Some of them.
CaptainI like that you had to edit yourself. Some of them. Okay. Um, he's also more recently known for his role in Sonic the Hedgehog. Um, and he was in Westworld, um, and he was in the black comedy on Netflix, I think, called Dead to Me. And then obviously his most recent stuff is Jury Duty. So yeah, I know there's like some controversy around James Marsden.
WilsonI thought he was a I thought he was clean.
CaptainUm, so he he was one of the people that so like I don't know the specifics, but he was one of the people that like wrote a letter in support of Brian Peck.
WilsonOh, yeah.
CaptainWhen all the but the Wikipedia does say that um a bunch of celebrities got kind of like roped into writing celebrities for Brian Peck or br writing letters for him because he like obviously lied about what the situation really was. So, like, I don't I mean, I don't know the specifics, but like Brian Peck had worked with a bunch of people, and so like those people that didn't know his side of him that he was um a terrible person because they weren't children when they worked with Brian Peck. Like, I don't know. I'm not I wasn't okay.
WilsonThat does actually sound familiar now that you mention it.
CaptainSteve. Okay. And then uh Rachel is kind of his love interest in this movie, played by Katie Holmes. Um, she is mostly famous for playing Joey Pa on Dawson's Creek. Did you watch Dawson's Creek? No, that wasn't before us. Okay. Um I guess it wasn't before us, but we were still too young. I'm guessing.
WilsonYeah, I mean, like, I feel like I've watched shows that were around that period of the similar type, like a teen drama. I just never did that one.
CaptainThis this movie that we just watched, Disturbing Behavior, apparently was Katie Holmes's second movie she ever did, and it was she was nominated for some type of Saturn award. Hmm.
WilsonSo was it also What was it for James Marsden? Because I I kind of got the impression that it was like both of theirs.
CaptainI think this was like his like third or fourth on Wikipedia.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainYeah. Um Batman looks pretty similar to like I can you can tell he's a baby, but like it's not like he looks totally different. Um he probably had some like little little touch-ups.
WilsonLittle touch-up, yeah.
CaptainUm Katie Holmes is also known for her roles in Batman Begins, Mad Money, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Jack and Jill. Oh, and she was in um Brahm's The Boy 2. I think we did the first one.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainThat was the movie where like a lot of the movie is in all black.
WilsonProbably. I know it has had the girl from um Walking Dead in it. Matt Maggie? Right? Oh, oh, okay. I think she was in it.
CaptainSure. Um, and then we have Gavin sh no, I always do that. We have Nick Stahl as Gavin Strick in this movie. Um, he was a child star and he was in some movie called The Man Without a Face, which he like gains like really big um recognition. Um, because he was directed and starred along Mel Gibson, but I don't think he did a ton after that. He was in Terminator 3, apparently.
WilsonThat's probably why I thought he looked familiar.
CaptainIs Terminator 3 the really bad one?
WilsonWell, there's several bad ones.
CaptainUm I remember I watched Terminator 1. I like not that long ago, I saw I watched Terminator and Terminator 2, and I was like, oh my god, these movies are so good. Let's watch the next one. And Jay was like, no, not the next one.
WilsonI think uh yeah, I don't know if it's the worst one in all of the Terminator movies they've done since then, but um I I have a distinct memory of how depressed I was after I watched that movie.
CaptainReally?
WilsonYeah, because I think like I mean, it's like the it takes place when Skynet goes live and takes over, and it was just like end of the world depressing kind of thing.
CaptainWe are here. I mean, I don't know. Doesn't it fall eventually after like Terminator 7 or something?
WilsonSomething, yeah.
CaptainOkay. Um, Officer Cox is in this movie briefly. Um Steve. I love that I'm watching you click on all of these links. Um Steve Rail's back. Um, he's best known for his performance in The Stunt Man and Life Force, and he was Charles Manson in the TV series from 1976, Helter Skelter. I think Officer Cox must be the one that is in the movie long term, right?
WilsonLike he's the one that's like working for yeah. So I was trying to figure out why he looks so familiar, and I think it is from X-Files.
CaptainOkay. I I thought he was in an episode of X-Files or something, but yeah. Um the antagonist is um Bruce Greenwald, who plays Dr. Caldecott. What an interesting name. Um he is mostly known for playing presidents of the US, like he's done it in a couple of different movies, and um he was also in Oh yeah, and then he also was in oh sorry he did it in 13 Days, National Treasure, and The Kingsman. And then he also was in some Star Trek stuff. Was that the Star Trek you watched, or no?
WilsonI mean, I watched almost all the Star Trek, but um uh he was in the the newer movies with Chris Pine.
CaptainOkay, and then I think I mostly recognize him from the Fall of the House of Usher, he's the patriarch. Yes, so like that's what he most recently did in 2023.
WilsonHe's so good in that role.
CaptainI know, I know. Um, and then in in Bat he's done a bunch of Batman voicing for like a bunch of different um films and I guess animations and stuff. Oh, who's Dorian Newberry in this movie?
WilsonI need to see his face. Uh William Sabi. He was the the uh guy the janitor.
CaptainOh, okay. They did not give that man a name. And especially was not Dorian. Anyway, in the channel of this movie, he is known for being in Die Hard 2, Bill and Ted's bogus journey, Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist. Yeah, plays President Tin. I don't know if that's a typo. In the Iron Man movies. Oh, he was a priest. I don't know. Some president. Whatever the president's name is in the Iron Man movies. Did we do Unholy for the podcast? He's a priest in that movie. You're I roll.
WilsonI was like, I was like. I need to look it up because I remember it sounds familiar.
CaptainUm He's in Salem's lot from 2024, too, but I know I've seen I think I've seen Unholy.
WilsonThat's one was Sydney Sweeney. I think we did do no, that was uh The Nun. No. I'm pretty sure we did the Unholy. I'm gonna look it up. Um Damn, what was the name of Oh my gosh. Okay, let me I'm gonna look up one thing at a time. Uh yeah, did we did we do Unholy? Yeah, it was 115.
CaptainOh, a twile ago. Okay. Well, he's in there. You recognize him from that, Wilson? Um we have who the fuck is Alan Clark? Certainly Alan Clark is played by Ethan Embry. Um they're in they from 2002. Okay, we definitely did that movie. Because I had it squelched. I didn't look it up. But that was like a way back. That was like episode like 70.
WilsonWait, which episode are sorry, which movie are you saying we did?
CaptainThey.
WilsonOh, you're right. This looks the cover art looks familiar. Oh, wait, this was terrible, I'm pretty sure.
CaptainYeah, it was bad. What what's the number? Out of curiosity.
WilsonOh, um, I didn't look it up. Um, sorry. What was it called again? Sorry.
CaptainSir! Oh my god, this man is not in the movie. This is the dead brother.
WilsonOh. Um, it was 129.
CaptainOh, I thought it was way earlier than that. Okay, and then lastly, Steve has a sister named Lindsay in this movie, played by Catherine Isabel. Sorry.
WilsonI just read ahead, sorry, to the what you said about the remaining cast, but sorry, uh continue.
CaptainThat's my bad that I can't. Yeah. Um, so apparently Lindsay is known as a scream queen. Um, his sister, she's um mostly known as Ginger in the Ginger Snaps series, which I think there were three of those. Um but apparently she's a Scream Queen from those. Have you ever watched a Ginger Snaps movie?
WilsonUh no, I've heard of them, but Okay.
CaptainAnd then she was in Yeah, Robin. I think that's the um I think that's the um psychiatrist.
WilsonNo, that was um Renata. I can't say her last name.
CaptainOh. Who uh who's Robin?
WilsonWas it the girl and the boyfriend? No, that was. Oh, yeah, you're right. I honestly have no idea.
CaptainShe must have been like Oh, this is she's not important at all. Literally not important at all. She has a minor role when Dr. Klein has a house party.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainI was like, oh, she must be the psychiatrist. Like, what? Anyway, I'm wrong. Um anyway, she's a scream queen. She's been in other stuff too. Like, she was in the 2002 Carrie. Um, she was in um American Mary, Freddy versus Jason. Um, it's a wonderful knife. Did we do that one? No, we didn't.
WilsonWe're gonna do that later this year.
CaptainI was gonna say we did Silent Night or something.
WilsonYes.
CaptainAnd then yeah, there's a bunch of other characters, but I I like I told Wilson, I I can't do this anymore. So there's like literally four other people on Wikipedia that had a photo and like stuff written, and then there was like probably six more people that didn't have a Wikipedia page, and I was like, I can't. Yeah,
Cradle Bay Arrival And First Red Flags
Captainyou've you've lost me. Anyway, the main idea here is there's a family that moves to Cradle Bay, so it's Steve and his sister, and they're here at this new school. Okay, so um, first things first, this movie's 85 minutes, and the credits are unbearably long in the beginning. Never a good sign.
WilsonIt's really not like an on an already short movie, you're just trying to get some runtime.
CaptainYeah, it's rough. Um, so we see this like um the movie starts out with this like gross scene of this guy named Andy that is like talking to some girl in his car at night, and he was like, Mary Lou, why would you mutilate yourself with a tattoo? I'm like, bro, it's a just a it's a fucking tattoo, chill. Um, and she's like it's a very weird conversation where she's like, self-mutilate. How about I self-mutilate this? And then starts blowing him, and I'm like, girl, girl, what?
WilsonAfter he said he wants to keep his fluids because he has a game coming up.
CaptainIt's so weird. Anyway, it doesn't last very long because he like rips her head off after his eyes turn red.
WilsonSo it already sounds batshit, and I know it is, but yeah.
CaptainBut you were kind of locked in because you're like, I don't know what's going on. Um, but Andy um gets cops to come by the car because he's like parked somewhere in the middle of the night. Um, and we also see that this kid named Gavin is watching this from like a hilltop. Like he he's just out at night and he sees this going on. One of the two cops sees that um Andy killed this girl and was gonna shoot him, and then Andy has some freak power and you know, shoots him and kills him. The cop that gets killed, I'm pretty sure that guy's in X Files. Like, I really recognize him. But I didn't put him in here because he's in 15 seconds of this movie.
WilsonYeah, I don't remember. I maybe I remember him looking familiar, but I can't place his face.
CaptainI definitely know he's very familiar. I think he's in X-Files. It's like Molders something. Um but anyway, Gavin watches this happen, and then the second cop that's there is basically helping Andy, the kid that did the killing. So he's like in on it, Officer Cox. And then we see Steve and his sister move into Cradle Bay. Um beautiful place, beautiful landscaping. Um, but so it's I'm guessing it's kind of like an island uh off the coast of Boston. No, just kidding. They said Chicago. Where is it?
WilsonNo, I think he's from Chicago, but the thing Washington State. Like uh an island community around there.
CaptainBut he said he was getting on the ferry. Oh. I think they were just giving the ferry back to Chicago.
WilsonI think they were like, we flew to Washington, we're gonna take a ferry into Puget Sound to this. Okay, I think.
CaptainOkay. Oh, it does say that. I just didn't read it far enough along.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainUm, yeah, so they move they're moving in from Chicago after we find out a little bit later on in the movie that his brother um committed suicide, their oldest son Alan, and like, you know, they did like this refresh reset for their family where they were gonna like move to Cradle Bay. Um, on his first day of school, Steve meets these outcasts. It's Gavin and then his friend UV and then eventually Rachel. And um Gavin and UV are like stoners basically. Um and you know, Gavin gives the obligatory like school walkthrough of all the clicks, which is like a little tiresome because so many movies do that. But I mean, I guess that's how things have to be to get you through.
WilsonYeah, and at the time it probably wasn't that that dated, but it is it's it is kind of tiresome now.
CaptainYeah, so um he basically you know walks him through like some of the cliques, but the main click is the one that's called Blue Ribbons, where it's this like kind of goody two shoes click that like um seems a little culty, like they, you know, do a lot of these um I don't know, they all have like jackets and they like do bake sales and stuff, but like they don't seem like normal basically. Um they're yeah, and then I was saying this, I told you this during the movie, but I was like, James Marsden, even at this age, like he's so much of a pretty boy, there is no way that like these random center kids would like swoop him up like a hundred percent. Some popular click would swoop that man up so quick. Um like that's just how high school works. Like, I don't know. Um so anyway, the blue ribbons, yes, very preppy. Um, clean cut overachievers is what it says. So um he meets uh yeah, Yu Vie and Gavin first, and then um he also meets Rachel, who is his like love interest, and she's kind of like a they called her the school's trash.
WilsonUh oh, I thought they were saying rich trash, but I couldn't honestly understand what they were saying. That's just what I thought.
CaptainOh, sorry, I put subtitles on. No, she's like this whatever the school is, Blue Ridge. She was saying Blue Ridge's trash.
WilsonWow.
CaptainI'm guessing she doesn't have a like a lot of parental guidance, and she's kind of in like a beaten-up truck that she brings to school, and she's in like they're not like bad clothes, but they're just dirty. I don't know. It seems like it's like aesthetics, though, to be honest.
WilsonOh yeah, because she looks like effortlessly beautiful, so it's like uh I mean it's Katie Holmes.
CaptainUm so anyway, um they kind of start hanging out. Um the first like scene that we really see that's well, besides Andy killing ripping that girl's head off, um, is that um they're like outside of this like market slash liquor store and they meet Chug, who disgusting name in every way. I guess it's technically Charles, but he goes by Chug. Um and he deserves to be called something like Chug. Um he is like really interested in Rachel and tries to approach her, um, even though he's part of this Blue Ribbons crew, and Rachel obviously like rejects him. He's in the market, like looking in the most egregious, staring way at Rachel, and they do these really just um exaggerated, like flashy, it's like flashes of the screen when their eyes get like all red, you know what I mean? Yeah, as as he's like focusing on different parts of her body.
WilsonYeah, he's like kind of in heat in a way, but he also gets really angry.
CaptainThe sweating is so much, and I it's like you need a towel. Um but yeah, it yes, then they get like overly angry when they get like in heat. That's a good way. Um,
Blue Ribbons Recruit And Control The Town
Captainand then he just starts like beating up people in the market, like four different people. He like rips this guy's nose ring out and like throws him into the into the shelving. Um nobody at the store seems that upset about it.
WilsonI'm like, um There's it's like they know, but they don't. I don't know.
CaptainYeah. Um so it's like it's like and it looks like he's on steroids. Like it looks insane. Um and then Gavin is like, I know what this really is. Like I saw something, no one will believe me because um officer Cox is in on it. So like I can't go to the cops about it, but like I witnessed Andy killing people earlier, and I think we see that um some kid gets attacked at night, right? And then they come in the next day, and like some one of the nerdy kids, like Steve, um no, not Steve. What's that guy's name? Trent. Um was like basically made fun of in class earlier by these peppy kids only to come back the next day and like be one of them. Um so it doesn't even make any sense.
WilsonAnd I honestly didn't recognize him at like it took me a minute to realize. I was like, it feels like they're saying that's the guy from yesterday, but he does not look familiar.
CaptainHe does not, yeah, he looks nothing like himself. Um, they don't focus on him too much, but basically Gavin is like these kids are being brain brainwashed and like something's happening to them, and he's trying to convince Steve because these kids are trying to recruit Steve, um, like a day or two after he gets to school. Um and Gavin is like some type of culty um, yeah, there's like some type of brainwashing or like spell on the town or something. He's like, let me show you. I'm gonna bring you to this um to watch their cult meetings from like the vents or from the ri the risers in the what do you call that? Like the pit? Not the pit. The top area in a theater. We don't know anything.
WilsonThe um the balcony.
CaptainKind of, but it's like the air the secret area, whatever. That's what it looks like. Are they were they or literally in the vents?
WilsonI I don't know.
CaptainAnyway, they're there's they're like um sneaking, they're like watching a meeting for this blue ribbons group, and it's definitely Colti. Uh definitely Colti. They're like voting on new candidates to bring in the city.
WilsonBut it's all the parents.
CaptainSo it's all the parents, yeah.
WilsonYeah, so like the blue ribbon group, it's all the kids are in it, but it seems like they're the ones that are brainwashed. But the parents are also in the group, but more so, I think, just to say, like, yeah, I want my kid in there.
CaptainYeah, I I don't know if parents somehow are recruited to move to Cradle Bay with this in mind. They don't really explain that, but it kind of seems that way. I I don't know if anyone like has lived here from the jump. I don't know.
WilsonYeah, I don't know. I get the impression this guy just came to town and was like, I'm gonna turn all these kids into something.
CaptainYeah. And like, because Steve's brother died recently, um, I don't know, his parents are kind of like on him, and I'm like, this isn't his fault. Um, but they like they make comments about how like he needs to do better. In that meeting, Gavin sees that his parents are there to be to make Gavin the next recruit. So, because they vote him in basically. And when he runs with Steve outside, he has a gun and he's like, Steve, I'm gonna kill them all. Like, they're gonna they're gonna be waiting for me at my house, and I'm gonna go shoot them up, and I'm not going to be part of that group. And then Steve's like, Okay, well, I'm taking your gun from you because you're gonna shoot everybody, like, including the paper boy.
WilsonYeah, and I don't think he like really believes this like mind control thing yet. And obviously, he doesn't want his friend to like go shoot up a bunch of people.
CaptainYeah, I mean it doesn't I mean it wouldn't even yeah. Neither way in that situation are your choices going to end up positively.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainSo um, but yeah, Steve Khalifa calls him paranoid. But Gavin shows up to school the next day, fully transformed, totally different attitude that befits the blue ribbons. Um, and he like drops Steve off, drops Steve entirely. So like Steve's hurt both like emotionally, and then they also beat Steve up. Um, so he's like hurt physically too. Um and Gavin joins in on the beating, so like Steve's really upset about it. Um there is a janitor, or no, an exterminator slash janitor. What do they call him? Yeah, janitor. Um, who's in this school and he's um definitely different.
WilsonYeah, but it seems like he just puts on that facade. Yeah, but he's actually like kind of normal and smart.
CaptainYeah, he puts on this facade of being like crazy and dumb so that he can blend in, I guess, or like they wouldn't be interested in him. But um he is making these like rat devices that are supposed to be um used to repel rats. Um, and Steve also talks to him about Slaughterhouse 5. I felt like I missed a lot of context with the Slaughterhouse 5 thing because I've never read that book.
WilsonYeah, me neither.
CaptainThere was like a lot of context in that conversation. I was like, I don't know. I have no idea. You should probably read it, but yeah, I think I talked about it in the hot goose a little. Um but has something to do with this movie. And then um anyway, he makes these rat devices that we see. Um, and then um I think shortly after Gavin gets recruited, um Steve finds um that he's getting record recruited too. So um one of the girls from the group is in his house that night, like after he gets kind of like chased through the woods, and Lorna, and um she says that she's there to tutor his younger sister Lindsay, but she also like goes into heat, as you said, before she leaves, and she like gets so fucking sweaty, tries to seduce him, seduce Steve, and she like flies into this violent rage. Um he she like ends up smashing his her face into this mirror and like starts bleeding everywhere, and she just keeps repeating the words like wrong and bad. Um tries to attack Steve, but he subdues her, and she like snaps out of it, I guess. But right after that scene, we see that um
Microchips, Rage Triggers, And Rat Devices
Captainthe doctor, what's his name? Caldecott, um is actually like doing some type of surgery on her, um, operating on her, and that man says there's a bunch of medical jargon that doesn't make any sense, but he says, make a cranial flap and I'm just gonna go elbow deep. I'm like, sir, how?
WilsonYeah, I don't know. I think he was trying to, I mean, weird wording aside, I think he was trying to fix her microchip because it's like that horniness. I don't know. Yeah, and her getting her head smashed.
CaptainAll these kids have these implants in them, and it sounds like the implants are not working to their how they're supposed to, because yeah, if they get too aroused, um, it makes them like super aggressive and violent. Um yeah. Um, and then I just I'm getting like waves of X-files, but just like not executed as well. Um anyway, Rachel finds or no, Rachel gets attacked by Chug um like more aggressively.
WilsonHe basically tries to rape her.
CaptainYeah, I mean he I mean he tries. The janitor is um using realizes that these r rat boxes that have these high-pitched sounds also work on these implanted kids. So as soon as he turns it on, like Chug screaming and in a frenzy, like um, and runs after, tries to find the machine that's making the noise, and then like destroys it, but it's enough time for Rachel to get away. Um and the janitor um witnesses this. So he like sees that these rock boxes work on these implants too. Um Rachel has a video from Gavin um that he left her that basically saying, like, if I have joined the blue ribbons, um, like here's some information that you need to know. And he says that the he found out that Dr. Caldicott used to work at something called like Flabsh flagship eleven. I don't know, some psych ward. Right?
WilsonI mean, yeah, he I don't remember the name, but yes, he worked at some psych ward.
CaptainYeah, and um they go to that ward and see that there's a bunch of kids there that are like his first experiments that like didn't pan out well, including his own fucking daughter.
WilsonHis original. Which is like crazy.
CaptainUm and this is when Steve tells him that like tells Rachel that he's also like mourning the loss of his brother and like cradle bay was supposed to be like this nice no reset, like the family's having a good time, um, and it's just become so much worse. Um but yes, they learned that Caldecott was implanting these microchips um with their approval of parents, and they are trying to reprogram them from being like they're not even all delinquents, like that's the problem. But they're basically like supposed to be going from delinquents to model citizens, and I'm like, some of these kids are just just they're just kids.
WilsonYes.
CaptainThere's nothing wrong with it.
WilsonIt's like anyone who got in their way or was a delinquent, but I I don't know. There are a lot of people either they die or they you know just get caught in the crossfire and they're microchiped.
CaptainYes. Um the towards the end of this movie, it's a lot of um Steve and Rachel getting attacked. Like they um, you know, they they try to Rachel and Steve um get like stopped by a cop and the cops trying to push them in their car, but the exterminator like saves them from that just for them them to get chased towards Steve's house by other kids. Um and then eventually, regardless of how long those scenes go on, they do eventually get kidnapped and I they get um taken to this. I thought Lindsay was kidnapped with them, but it looked like she wasn't. I guess she wasn't like old enough. But Steve and Rachel get kidnapped and they get forced into this like surgery building where they're gonna get brainwashed and then get implanted. But the the brainwashing video we see like 30 seconds of it is so bad.
WilsonIt's just like be excellent, like flashing on the screen with like and some of their banners from their school and then like kids playing in a playground.
CaptainYeah, like kids playing like in the sun or like sun sunsets on the beach. I'm like, what what is this? What is this? Um but before I think Steve gets fully um implanted, he like I think I he like stole a scalpel, so he has the ability to get out. So he gets free, cuts it, um, and then saves Rachel too, who's incapacitated. Again, Chug and his nasty, disgusting ass says, Where are you going with my custard? Referring to Rachel. So gross, so gross. Um, and obviously, like him and Steve and Rachel like beat him up and eventually he's bleeding out on the ground. Um Lindsay and UV arrive in a truck to save the kid um Steve and Rachel, and they're gonna go to the ferry to um, you know, leave town. Dr. Caldicott and the Blue Ribbons assemble to like stop them, but basically the rest of the kids go to the ferry and um Steve's like, I'm gonna stay back. The exterminator basically saves him in this big final attack where he has dropped like 10 of these rat repel soundboxes to his truck, um, yeets them all the way to like level 10. So like so, like all like these like 50 kids start attacking his truck, and then yes, and then he's like, die, bitches, or whatever. And then he, yeah, literally the whole truck, him and all of the kids that are on the truck off a cliff.
WilsonYeah, like they're not the kids aren't getting the micro trips removed, they just die.
CaptainYeah, and I was like, that's one way to do it. Um Steve even says, like, we might be able to save them, and he's like, No.
WilsonI'm gonna try. He's seen these punk ass kids in school, and he's like, I mean, they do say a lot of bad stuff to him.
CaptainSo um they did that scene really well. I was kind of curious how they did that because it looked like not terrible like CGI or anything.
WilsonYeah, like you mean like they like actually drove like 20 kids off a cliff or occupational hazard.
CaptainYeah. Um, I don't know. It just looked, it didn't look so bad. Um and then yeah, they I think Steve also like gets attacked by the doctor one more time, even though he got hit by a car, and then he like kicks the doctor called a cut off the cliff, too.
WilsonGood for him.
CaptainYeah. So Yu Vie, Lindsay, Rachel head to the ferry and then or on the ferry, and then Steve meets them on the ferry as well, and he says to Rachel that um, like the you know, we're the last ones left, and we're gonna go start our new lives. I don't know how they're gonna be able to do that.
WilsonYeah, I mean, like what are the So I'm confused why they're leaving their parents if the parents aren't also microchipped. And if they are microchipped, are they just there's chilling in town? Like, I don't know.
CaptainI don't know. To me, it sounded like the parents were not microchipped, they were just down to have their kids microchipped. Um, and I guess because they were
Surgery Trap, Cliff Chaos, And Ferry Escape
Captaindown for that, Steve was like, Well, fuck those two. Damn.
WilsonWell, that's fuck my mom and dad. They basically just lost all three of their kids.
CaptainOh yeah. I mean, don't do what you're trying to do. I don't know. Um yeah, the my my big thing is like, okay, there's there's four teenagers that are out here in the world, but like somebody is gonna be like, where's your parents? And like, aren't his parents gonna like put out a missing persons or like reports?
WilsonI don't know, maybe in 1998 you could disappear much easier.
CaptainBut anyway, that is not true. They are not the last ones left. At the very last scene of the movie, there's a class of an unnamed high school that's acting rowdy. Um, and they introduce that there's gonna be a new student teacher there that is going to help the class, and it's revealed to be Gavin, who's still alive, who's still programmed with the blue ribbon technology. So I'm guessing he's supposed to be the next Dr. Caldecott. That's not how he's introduced.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm, but that was how the movie ends.
WilsonI don't know how you just pick up that like years of research that the uh the doctor had, but I'm assuming the doctor had like an actual like medical doctorate. I think so. So like the student's just gonna start doing it too.
CaptainI don't I don't I mean, oh you mean like just fuck it? Like I don't need a medical degree.
WilsonYeah, like how does he know what to do?
CaptainI don't know. Nobody knows. There's definitely questions in this movie that don't get answered. Um and like I liked the movie, but it is hard to get past some of those questions.
WilsonAnd also, I just realized I'm confused. He was able to be hired as a student teacher, but what about the time between him being in high school and then college to be a student teacher?
CaptainWas he just like Oh yeah. I guess he just lied.
WilsonMaybe. Or he's just being a good kid for like four years.
CaptainI don't know.
WilsonPlaying the long game.
CaptainIt didn't seem like a bunch of time had passed. It seemed like Cradle Bay was a failed experiment, and they were like, um, one person's you know, whoever's still alive is gonna like go out and spread the be the new super spreader.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainSir, I don't know. I don't yeah. They yeah, they they didn't answer a lot of questions.
Ratings, Recuts, And The Missing 31 Minutes
CaptainUm so some things there's kind of a lot about this movie, um, with some uh production stuff, um, but some numbs. Budget was 25 mil. Box office 17.5. So yikes. Not not good. Um for Rotten Tomatoes, it's a 36, and then the audience is a 40. Um so not terrible, but I mean, the fact that Katie Holmes got nominated for something is like, you know.
WilsonI mean, that's pretty good. Yeah. I'm looking at the letterboxed rating. The average is 2.8.
CaptainOkay.
WilsonWhat would you give it?
CaptainNot that high. I don't think it deserves maybe it does deserve a 50? Like a 2.5?
WilsonI was thinking a 2.5 and a like.
CaptainYou love the likes.
WilsonWell, it's like the movie wasn't good, and I have problems with like, how does that make sense?
CaptainYeah, likes mean nothing to me. I think I'm gonna give it a 2.5, but if I had to give a number out of a hundred, I think it'd be less than 50. I think it'd be like 44.
WilsonUm, yeah, I could see that. Somehow the stories feel different. And I could Yeah.
CaptainIt's like not a like the movie's entertaining, but like not for the ways in which it's trying to be. I don't know how's to say that. The film underwent numerous studio-manded recuts and a reshoot of the original ending due to negative testing test screenings. So many of the cuts were the scenes providing plot and character development, which I think might have helped how we feel about the movie.
WilsonYeah.
CaptainUm, the first test audience screening was poor. So the director Nutter cut the backstory for Steve's brother Alan as well as the love scene between Steve and Rachel, because we don't really see them like fall in love, they just do because that's how high school movies are sometimes.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainAnd then uh the film tested again, but it was below studio expectations again. So MGM proceeded to take full control of the film and hired another editor, George Folsey Jr., to make more cuts. And Nutter was expected to shoot a new ending in which the character of Gavin survives. A Seth's audience had disliked the plot where Gavin dies. I don't know why.
WilsonWell, because I kind of thought, I mean, even though James Marsden was the main character, it felt like Gavin was really important. So, like, I could see why. Like, I would have been upset a little bit if he just died at the end of this. It feels wrong.
CaptainYeah, I think I would have liked it better if he had some other redeeming storyline, but I don't know how you would have done that. So um, cuts are made to the film, cuts made to the film were so severe that Nutter considered having his name removed from the credits, but decided to not out of respect for his cast and crew. Um, he said that he really envisioned this film to be atmospheric X-File style thriller, but the studio wanted a scream-style teen horror, and their attitude was let's just go to the fright beats. Let's just go to the fright beats. They felt teenagers wouldn't sit still, sits wouldn't sit through a picture that was more than 90 minutes. 90 minutes is so short.
WilsonI know.
CaptainUh so in total, they cut 31 minutes worth of filmed edited uh movie. Um, and that resulted to an 84-minute theatrical cut. Um in apparently 2000, they MGM did release um disturbing behavior on DVD, and there was a audio commentary from I think Nutter and like 11 deleted scenes. It wasn't the entire cut, I believe, but um it was on that DVD version. There's like this whole era of like early 2000s where like DVDs came out and they like like that was such a big thing. They were like, here's all the other shit that we didn't put in the movie.
WilsonYeah, and now I feel like I mean it could just be me, but I feel like people don't really watch extras very much anymore.
CaptainNo, now all that stuff's lost.
WilsonLike if it's not sometimes you buy it on iTunes, it's like comes with extras, but I don't watch that.
CaptainWilson, you're buying movies on iTunes?
WilsonI mean, sometimes. Jesus Or like Apple TV, whatever they want to call it now. Oh that makes you sound old how I phrase that.
CaptainBut like, yeah, on there Yeah, when you said iTunes, I was like, sir, you're logging into iTunes? Like, I was like, what is going on over there? Um so anyway, there there are scenes available in the DVD world um in which Gavin, I think, does the scene of him dying is is one of the extras on the DVD.
WilsonOkay.
CaptainUm, but I would be curious to watch the 150-minute version of the movie. I think that would have answered some of our like questions as to like what's going on.
WilsonYes. And but I've I'm concerned that if it was longer, I would just have the complaint of like, oh, this was too long. It should have been 90 minutes.
CaptainWe do do that a lot. Um, I'm like, this scene doesn't add anything. Like, yeah, I I do do that. Um, some other so like basically a bunch of production errors and failures, which is why like the theatrical release, the box office is really bad too. Um, some other stuff um that's just kind of interesting. Earlier in the film, the sheriff refers to the upcoming football game with Knights Ridge, and Knights Ridge was a setting of beautiful girls in 1996, which was also written by Scott Rosenberg. Um, and then here's the thing with Slaughterhouse 5. So the janitor has that in his pocket, and apparently that book, the plot involves like mind control and of the form in the form of headbands to obtain equality. I had never read that book. I I think some schools, is that like a book for some schools?
WilsonYeah, I remember like some English classes at school would require it. Mine just didn't.
CaptainYeah, we read like Cutcher and the Rye, Shakespeare.
WilsonShakespeare.
CaptainBut like this one never came up as like one of the ones we had to read. Oh, it has like a bunch of different names, the book. It was from 1969.
WilsonI didn't know it was that old.
CaptainI didn't know it was that old either. I thought it was from the 80s. Anyway, that book's like, I don't know, uh referenced in the movie, and it's similar. That's all I can say. Um okay, there were two characters in this movie that also were in Carrie Together in 2002, but one of them I didn't even talk about because it took too long.
WilsonEmbarrassing.
CaptainUm yeah, I don't know. I didn't mind the movie. I just I didn't love it either.
WilsonYeah. Yeah, that's kind of where I am.
Raised Glass Picks And Next Week’s Film
CaptainDid you have a um I didn't pick a rag? Do you have a rag? Razorgas?
WilsonI have well, there's two potential ones, mostly because of like shock value. One when he ripped out the piercing from the guy's nose, I was just like cringe so hard that made me uncomfortable. Um and then I saw you. Yeah.
CaptainI saw you cringe, yeah.
WilsonUm and then when you just like yeeted 20 kids off a cliff. I wasn't expecting them to just like I thought they'd just be freed of mind control at the end of the movie. No, no.
CaptainNo. Yeah, probably the yeeting off the clip cliff would be my uh raised glass too, but I hate doubling up. But that really is like the most shocking scene of the movie. And the most interesting. So yeah. If you want to pour one out, it's just Chug. It's just the whole character.
WilsonThat's a that's a definite pour one out. That's a definite one. His death should have been worse than what it was.
CaptainIt should have been way worse, and it should have been full of vengeance and yeah. Um yeah, I don't know. I I don't think I can recommend the movie though, so anyway, I don't think I could. Um, did you want to know next time we're doing The Turning from 2020, and it's about some orphans and how they're not great?
WilsonYeah, anytime we watch a movie and the word orphan is in it, it was like, okay, yeah, they're gonna be evil, or like somebody's trying to like possess them.
CaptainThey're always evil orphans. I'm like, what do these orphans have to do? Like, why is that like a major uh like movie plot or like I don't know, trope?
WilsonYeah, orphans already have it bad enough, and then we're just like making them the bad guy in every possible media.
CaptainAlways or always evil, yeah. Um there's so many bad ones, too, including I'll say allegedly. Maybe Viterney included.
WilsonYou'll have to listen to find out.
CaptainYeah, you'll have to listen to find out. Um yes. And then, oh, advice on the CV. Um, I just I mean, the parents in the CV just suck, right? I mean, I don't know. There's no good parents in the CV, so I just want to be like, don't be a bad parent. I don't know.
WilsonYeah, well, I feel like the parents mean well, but I just Okay.
CaptainDr. Caldicott literally said, like, fuck my daughter.
WilsonWell, okay, well, yeah, he was the bad apple.
CaptainHe's a bad apple. That at least way worse than a bad apple. Um, yeah, the like kids didn't really do anything wrong. I think honestly, my advice for this week would just be like be a good parent. Parent better. That's what I got.
