Rock Solid Families

Part 2 in a 4 Part Series - Instant Gratification.
In this show, Linda and Merrill take on the seeking of instant gratification from our screens.  It is no surprise that over 97% of U.S.adults have a cell phone.  It is also no surprise that many of us admit to having a level of addiction to our phones.

The phones and other various screen technologies are not the problem.  The problem is how we have been knowingly conditioned to receive brain stimulation that creates a feeling of gratification, instantly!  This sensation is so powerful as it is the result of dopamine release that creates a powerful desire to recreate it.  Before we know it, we are seeking more and more of the stimulation.

The stimulation in this case is what is coming across our screens. Exciting pictures, fascinating tidbits of information, advertisements, clicks of approval, all of these things grab our attention and slowly are holding us captive.

While it sounds a bit like a science fiction movie, it is actually are reality.  You might wonder what the problem is to have good or stimulating thoughts in our brain.  The problem is not the occasional stimulation, the problem now is the saturation.  The intensity is so great that we it draws our attention from many other daily living responsibilities and tasks.  It is now common place to watch a family sitting at a restraurant with no one talking to each other, and all the family members are in a deep trance staring at their phones.

The negative impact is being seen in numerous ways.  Depression, anxiety, social isolation, poor social interaction skills, and a multitude of disruptive thoughts to an otherwise healthy brain.

Let's not be a victim any longer.  We have the data and we have to own the responsibility of taking care of ourselves and our kids.  The time to begin is now.
