This one, taking a look at this sectional, it's gonna be to use a teeth teek Fenwickism, an old-fashioned slobber knocker. Slobber knocker. Love it. Or swashbucker. You should change your swashbuckler. Oh, yeah, yeah. I thought you switched that.
SPEAKER_01But a swashbuckler is technically a noun like a pirate. Oh, is it really? Okay. Yeah. Sounds like an adjective. Swashbuckler. Maybe like it's good old-fashioned swashbuckling. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, your swashbuckler doomy to the week or match of the week.
SPEAKER_01We'll see. Barn burner. That's gonna be hard to get out of my vernacular. Quick 30-second non-wrestling talk, but the Packers might just not be good this year. Come on, Teague.
SPEAKER_00Listen. A win is a win. Although, you know, I felt like after that win today, it's like when you're a little kid, the day of Christmas, when you don't, you know, you're a little bit selfish and you don't get the gift that you wanted. And you're a little bit disappointed, but then you realize, yeah, it's still Christmas Day, so you're kinda happy. That's how I that's how I felt with that win. It's like, yeah, we won. I feel good. Kinda. But a Packers win is a Packers win. This is true. Yeah. An ugly win is still a win. But yes, I am I am a little concerned as well.
SPEAKER_01We have uh Northeast Wisconsin that we are covering tonight. I think our first Northeast one, like true Northeast one, if I can recall correctly. We're already eight previews in. Gonna be a third of the way done after this week, which is crazy to think about. Yeah, it is. I know, Steve. You got you have your hometown in this one. You're rocking some Thunder gear.
SPEAKER_00Thunder, yep, and I do have up above me over here. Little uh right sound home action behind me.
SPEAKER_01I am repping uh some gear from my 2013 team state foes, the Luxembourg Casco Spartans, who just How do you feel about that?
SPEAKER_00Are you okay with that?
SPEAKER_01It stings a little bit. I was only on the mat for 40 seconds, so uh I uh I'm just more happy that Luxembourg Casco's back in D2.
SPEAKER_00Um were you was it a good for I mean were you were you happy with your 40 seconds, or were you kind of like, you know, did you give everything you had in those 40 seconds?
SPEAKER_01I don't think a lot of people are satisfied with just 40 seconds, many avenues. Uh and that match, no, I was not. It was my last career match, too. Um okay. Well, that's right.
SPEAKER_00Anyway, that's you know what? It was at Team State, so that's all right.
SPEAKER_01I was I I had to eat to make weight for 182, and then I wrestled a Luxembourg guy. His last name was Peters, of course. And uh he was the full 182, and just did not work out.
SPEAKER_00I can't I can't I can't even imagine you at 182. That's a I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're fucking the physics did not agree with me on that one.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's funny.
SPEAKER_01I well now I can't imagine myself going 182, not only because it's not a weight class, but I'd have to cut a little bit at this point. According to your parent scale, that is. That's right.
SPEAKER_00That is true.
SPEAKER_01Uh Steve, this is uh gonna be a fun one. We have I don't like competitive balance, but control we can control, right? And the fact that there's a team coming up from D3 that's in this one, and a team coming down from D1 that could clash. Right. I'm all about that storyline.
SPEAKER_00I don't like what led to it, but it's pretty cool. Right, right. Yeah, it's funny. One from D1, one from D3, and they could meet, you know, to for uh a chance to go to the champion or to go to state in D2. So that's uh yeah, there's all kinds of narratives and storylines you can talk about in this one. And let's not forget uh another returning team state champ or uh team state uh participant in Denmark, right? We'll talk about them in a little bit. Yeah. This one, this sectional, well, here are the uh here are the stats. 32 ranged wrestlers according to Wisconsin Grappler, grappler through Zach. Uh 120 pounds has the most with four. We have three number ones, uh, Newbert, Ham, and uh Krieger. And then um there are four number twos as well. No, three number twos, take that back. So it's uh she's a good one. I think it's funny. We always talk about in the past when it was just the four that the North, this particular D2 sectional, how difficult it was. And I think um when it all got weeded down to seven different sectionals last year, this particular sectional uh, you know, just became uh maybe slightly above above average. Now it's all back to being a it's it's gonna be brutal, man.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. The individual sectional will be held at the home of the comets in Wapaca. The team sectional at Freedom. I think you might have misspelled Freedom there, Steve, but it is freedom that I'm reading there. Yep. And uh our first school that we have, well, another shocker here. Other school that came down from a D1 for uh they did not get depromoted or relegated for competitive balance purposes. Well, I guess they did, but not the same reason as Luxembourg. We have Ashwabanon. They are 15th in the Green Bay Preble sectional with four and a half points. They return eight of their 10 starters and all of their points, so led by top eight sectional finisher Colin Demars.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Teague, I don't have much on uh on Ashwaban. Obviously, they were in a um the sectional you and I were at, obviously with Kakona, Beaport, and Luxembourg, Casco. Um, you know, a program that was very strong back in the 90s, right? So uh we're led to be in now their D2, even though an enrollment's D1. Not quite sure. Just hopefully uh this move for them helps them establish themselves as a strong program that they once were.
SPEAKER_01Gets them back on the up and up. Yeah. Next team up, one of our favorite mascots, the Truckers of Clintonville. They were 16th in the Anagos sectional last year. They are returning four of their eight starters, Steve.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they returned Jackson Blash. Hopefully I'm saying that right. 157. Miles Puger at 144. Uh head coach, coach uh Casey Ebert uh is doing a great job up there, getting getting numbers out and developing as wrestlers. Mike Lambert is former assistant coach at Teague, got to throw the name in there, at Athens at also Seymour, right, which I'm wearing the shirt. Uh um these guys, uh these guys, along with Coach Casey, they're getting the the feeling of the conference, talking with some guys from the conference. These guys are bringing a new attitude to Clintonville, which is uh awesome to hear.
SPEAKER_01Moving on to Denmark, who was a first in the two rivers sectional with 219 points. At Team Sectionals, they beat Winnicani 48-31 and Chilton Hilbert 39 to 32. At Team State, they lost 51 to 22 to Melman GET, bringing back eight of their 14 starters and 109 points. They do lose Nolan Larson, who placed third at 165 pounds, Steven Keel Pikowski, who placed fifth in a loaded 175-pound bracket, and Dominic Swetlick, who qualified at 285. But they're returning Colin Zellner and Rhett Welsing, who qualified at 106 and 132, respectively, along with fourth place sectional finisher Daxton Krashnewski, and four more top eight finishers. T, I know you're not you're go ahead. Sorry. The the first note on this aside from props to Denmark. Congrats to them on qualifying for Team State for the first time, correct?
SPEAKER_00It was the first time, right? We talked about them. Uh, don't lose that thought, but we talked about them numerous times. Just, you know, I I think it was 2020. Uh they were, I think, fourth ranked in the state, but Reichstown was number one. Luxembourg was number two, right? So they're uh they just had years with great teams, just behind slightly better teams, right?
SPEAKER_01Before last year, probably uh one of, if not the best program, not to uh qualify for team state yet. So well due for the Vikings of Denmark to make it. And I know they're graduating a lot, but still bringing back a good slew of talent. And I think we can classify Denmark as a as a reloading team.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. It's Denmark. I know Teague, you're gonna be a little bit sad. Steven's gone. Steven's a great young man, not afraid to call Teague out for not picking him. We love that, especially as a as a sophomore. Uh, third place, uh Cullen Zellner, as Teague talked about, got two wins at state uh this year at ranked number three at 106 pounds. They also have another ranked wrestler, Rhett Wellsy, 31 and 21 last year. Uh, as T already mentioned, first trip to Team State. But that, you know, I think the first round, not necessarily uh Melman GET is just a solid, solid program, so I don't think they performed necessarily. I would say they didn't perform the way they wanted to in that one. It's just GET Melman was a uh a matchup nightmare for them. Um, I took a little look. I do remember there was a little bit of uh drama when they qualified for state. At at Team Sectionals, it was down to one match to go. Denmark had a one-point lead and 165-pounder, as we just mentioned, Nolan Larson sealed that with a pin. So that was kind of a nice little like a little walk-off pin for the Vikings.
SPEAKER_01If you're a Denmark supporter, gotta feel pretty good if he's the last one out there for you.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, if he's if he's your closer, if you call him the righty or the lefty, whatever he is, you're yeah, you're you're feeling good about yourselves.
SPEAKER_01Moving on to uh Fox Valley Lutheran, who was 16th in the two rivers sectional with 30 points. They were turning five of their eight starters into eight points, led by two top eight sectional finishers, Jonah Wittig and Ashton Elliott. Well, going to uh Freedom, which I love. I think, yeah, Steve, another reason the sectional got so hard is because not only did Luxembourg come up in Wyomega, but I think two sectionals kind of combined again and uh for the most part got the the best of both worlds. In a sense, yeah. In a sense. Oh, we got freedom. They were a fifth in the Anago sectional with 137 points. At Team Sectionals, they beat Shaw 47 to 30, lost to Coleman 64 to 11, and a 45 to 34 to Merrill for a fourth place team sectional finish. Steve, last year we we classified it as a down year for freedom, which fourth place at team sectionals. I think a lot of teams would take that for a down year. They are returning all 11 of their starters, their state returns. Caden Bach, who qualified at 106, Jackson Williams made at 113, and Murphy Bayer, who was a runner up at 157. Also getting one of the biggest transfer portal wins, bringing in a Hortonville state medalist, AJ Warple.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, right. Freedom has uh three ranked wrestlers. AJ is coming in, number two at 126. He was 106 last year, correct? He that's a 20-pound jump. Caden Bach, who had 35 wins last year, he's number six at 106. And uh Mr. Williams, uh wait, I'm sorry, Jackson Williams, 35 and 21, got a round two win. He's number 12 uh number nine at 120 pounds, actually four ranked wrestlers. I apologize. Jackson snuck in my notes there. Murphy buyer, 50 wins last year, had two falls, and then an impressive 6'3 win over Trig White in the semis, obviously before falling to an extremely tough wrestler in schools, but heck of a year for Murphy, and he's leading a like you said, T, returning 11 guys, obviously 12. If you had the uh if you had AJ back into the into it, they're looking pretty strong for the Irish are looking pretty good this year.
SPEAKER_01We have Alexander Casco up next, who was a fifth in the Green Bay Preble sectional with 162.5 points. Team sectionals, they beat Pulaski 41 to 30, Hortonville 34-31, and they lost to Kakona 62 to 11, and Bayport 38-29 for a third place finish. The Spartans are bringing back 12 of their 14 starters for 140.5 points. Returning Joseph Gene Quart, who plays fourth at 138, Carson Newbert, who won a second state title last year, did it this time at 144, and bring back third place sectional finishers, Lincoln Bashton and Logan Elwinger, fourth place sectional finishers Mason Bollinger and Josiah Bashton, and two more top eight sectional finishers. Steve, this is a tough sectional, but we were at the sectional LC was at last year. And I'd feel confident. I mean, you never know how weights can fall, but those guys who placed third and fourth last year in that Green Bay Preble sectional, I'd feel very confident in seeing them at the coal center this year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was, I mean, we were there, right? I mean, we spent 24 hours straight with the Luxembourg fans. Um, that's supposed to be funny. Anybody, anybody that was at that sectional uh uh still is not laughing about that. I've never been in a I've never been in a gym for a tournament past 10 p.m. in my life, which was crazy. Uh yeah, it's um, you know, they moved moved from D1, moved up to D1 two years ago. And see, probably, you know, and when what you could say, down years, I'm gonna use quotes to write that. Down years for by LC standards, and now they moved back to D2, uh, and they have 12 coming back. Um, I I think they wanted to represent how strong they were. I mean, I'm not, I'm speaking, I'm speaking for them, right? I I don't have any input or um somebody tell me this, right? But I think they wanted to represent how strong they were when they got up to D2. But like we said, for for LC standards, maybe they were they were really young. Um, so I think it was the worst possible time for them to go up to D1, especially in probably the slobber knocker of the sectional that was with Bay Port with Bay Port Kakona. Um but they are looking really tough this coming year uh with the two state qualifiers returning. They have seven, I believe it's seven ranked wrestlers. Uh Joseph uh Gene Quart, as you mentioned, is number two at 144. Uh, we'll talk about Carson in just a bit. They have Coy Anderson, number 12 at 113, Josiah Bashton, number seven at 157, Lincoln Bashton, number four at 165, Masonger Bullinger, number eight at 175, and Logan Ellinger, number three at 190. Those are high rankings, right? I mean, the their lowest ranked guys are number eight. And Carson, obviously ranked number one. Uh, here's a little interesting fact for you, Teague. Uh I had that three to two win in at this in the state finals, two-timer. 163-8 record. He's on that watch list, right? If he gets 50 wins, if I did my math correctly, he if he gets 50 wins, he breaks. He's one of those guys that's potential to break that state record of um Weber and Um T. Oh my gosh, um Heiser. Evansville. Weber and Heiser. So, right? Like uh that that's gonna be fun to see who's gonna be that next guy to break the state wins record. And obviously 50. Uh Karsten had 54 last year, so easily, easily in there. Um, and by the way, he uh he got the 46th and 47th state individual state title. They're just three away from 50, cracking that 50 mark. But um, by the way, T, do you know has he declared where he's gonna go wrestling in college?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I forgot. I thought, was it Minnesota, maybe?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, maybe somebody in the chat will be able to pop that in.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I won't do recon right now. But Steve, in the speaking of the chat, we got Daven. Uh, he agreed that the Chilton Hilbert Denmark duel was amazing and uh well-deserved win by them. So love to see the love there from Dave. Respecting the opponents. Question in regards to uh not the teams here, but we talked that day. Well, I mean, I want to say it wasn't fun, but it was just a long day in a gym. I know for some schools, Steve, that means like I know six schools have team sectionals the next week. For a lot of schools, they're only wrestling one postseason day, and like do you ask the question, how long do you have to spend in the gym on one Saturday to make up for having one less Saturday? For us, our question, since we go to everything, was 12 hours in the gym of wrestling, was that worth not having a Tuesday team sectional to travel to? You want me to answer that? Maybe maybe something to chew on. You you can think about it. So you can I mean either answer yes. If not, yes, then what is the how long does a tournament have to be with this new setup to make it worth it not to go to team sectionals?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I don't know. I mean, I'm I've been in the gym for 10 hours. I don't know. I have no idea, Teague. I'm gonna I if I start talking about it, um, I I I like only having one day, right? I just think we I think we were in there longer than 12 hours, weren't we, Teague? Uh gotta have in there, yes, we were in there for approximately 15 hours. Yeah, 15 hours. Um it was just it just yeah, I would say eight hours, right? Would probably be I and I think and I think uh it was year one of this format. So I think they're gonna do things to um you know to fix it, right? You always gotta you take a look at areas you can improve and what you can do better, and I think they'll do that. That's uh I'm I'm very much not uh oh that's stunk, we should go back to the way it was, right? No, it's like you gotta you gotta put something out there and then figure out and chisel away at the at the you know the finished product. So um I I think I think that'll be corrected. So I'm not when I said that in the beginning as far as being in the gym that long, yeah, there was a little bit of bitterness, if you will, but uh I'm not worried for the future at all.
SPEAKER_01Oh, no, not at all. I'm guessing a lot of those sectionals will go to four, maybe even five mats. I don't know for sure, as long as you know they're still officials for it and whatnot. Uh I I think nine hours is my mark. Wrestling starts at 10, gets done at seven, and even if I'm like worse case, like if I'm across the state in Green Bay, I get home by like 11 after takedown and all that. I'll I'll take that trade off for not doing the midweek team sectionals. Correct. Yeah, all right, Steve. We have uh Marinette, the few, the proud. Oh, I get nice. They were 11th in the Anago sectional with 64 and a half points. They returned five of their eight starters, 29 and a half points. They'll be led by fourth place sectional finisher Canon May, along with three more uh top eight finishers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, two other ones in there, top returners, Levi Kunzel. Hopefully I'm saying his last name right, 31 wins last year. Wyatt Liedman at 138 at 22 wins. Uh Coach Greeton is building, he's he's doing some good stuff up there in Marinette Teague. Also uh also has another coach with him. And here's uh I'm gonna I haven't asked you a trivia question for a while, so here comes one. But he also has three-time state champ, Jeremy May, with him. He obviously coaches this kid, Kasen, who we just talked about, who really from what I hear, really lets it fly on the mat, just like his dad did. But here's my trivia question, Teague, and it's pre-2000, so I don't expect you to get it, but I think we definitely should uh give this guy his due. So Jeremy May wrestled for I I thought he was two and two. I thought he wrestled two years for Krivitz and then two years for Coleman, but it could have been three and one. I don't remember. That's that doesn't matter, but he was a three-timer. His sophomore year, he lost in a 13 to 11 overtime match. And uh my question for you is, and I will give you a hint, uh, who did he lose to? And I'll tell you it was a Merriwood conference wrestler. What year was this? Oh, jeez.
SPEAKER_01Before I started following it along um Yeah, well, this was in the in the 1990s, so now I had a quick the 90s Merriwood wrestler. Marrowwood wrestler.
SPEAKER_00Oh, let's see, multiple time champ. Not Craig, right? It was not. Nope. It was not Craig. We we did mention him on the show. Sean Ainge. No, that was a good guess. Wow, that would be a good guess. Let's see, the year was I should have had this ahead of time. It was not Sean Ainge. Um, it was 19, it would have been 1997 was the year. Uh Mark Natchke? Nope, it was a wrestler from Auburn Dale.
SPEAKER_01Oh it's not a while air, because Nate was early nineties, I think.
SPEAKER_00Ooh. It could have been why because um Nate was 90 Nate was 97, wasn't he? No, he was 95. Nate was 95. It was actually, I'll just go ahead and give it to you. Kevin Kringles.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I think you would have had to give me like maybe 10 guesses and like 15 minutes to let it stew. But think about this.
SPEAKER_00A 13, we just talked about um uh oh, who's the guy from Wootzburg? Peter Rogers, right? Having a close match with Trevor Hassenjäger, and uh that prevented him from being a four-timer. Now here we got a 13 to 11 overtime that prevents somebody from being a four-timer. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_01Wow, yeah. The difference between everyone knowing them and uh not everyone knowing them. Right? Well, yeah, the one we were talking about the Pete Rogers. I'm like, wow, that match was the difference between everyone knowing Pete Rogers and me just hearing about him for the first time now, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, and we say that meaning like my era, we all know him, right? But you're talking, you're talking people born like yourself. Wow, you were born in what '93.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yep. Hey, before we go on to uh nominee nation, Mason, not all sectional. We did have the absolute longest sectional. That is correct. Yes. I think that's why we went the route of how long would you want to be in a gym before it's not worth the trade-off. And then Doug, uh, glad to see uh our the Brewers played already, didn't they? No, they're on in uh right now. Oh, perfect. So Doug Doug can give us updates on that. Hey, Menominee Nation was 15th in the Anago sectional with eight points. They were turning six of their starters from last year's squad.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, a couple of those starters. Cyrus Olsen at 144. Kai Waka, I believe, hopefully I'm saying his last name right at 190. See, here's the good news for Menominee Nation. Um, I how many only returning six starters, eight at Sex Fills? They did have 17 total wrestlers on their roster. That's pretty solid numbers for the program.
SPEAKER_01Love it. Get to that 20, Mark, and you can fill out a pretty good roster there. You sure can. Moving on to the Bulldogs of New London. They were second in the Antigo sectional with 189. Team sectionals, they beat Merrill a 51 to 24, and lost to Coleman a 48 to 30. They're returning a five of their 12 starters and 72 and a half points. Losing state champ Will the Thrill Christopher won it at 138 last year. Yeah. They're bringing back Trevor Schultz, who qualified at 132. And uh his mom calls him precious, but I don't want to get torn in half by him. So I'm going to call him Preston Krieger. He placed fourth at 200 at 15 pounds last year. And just a great year for New London last year and for Preston. It feels like whether it was getting fourth at sectionals or how his brackets are, he'll be a kid that if he wins a state title, I'll be so happy for him this year because he is like he's taking his lumps when it comes to his competition. And if he can come out of the scrum on top, I can't think of the rankings or who's with him around that weight right now. But yeah, yeah. I I I can pop that up real quick and find out. You can't tell it about just because of how dangerous of a wrestler he is.
SPEAKER_00It's funny. You look at him, um, I and I tell his, I think I told this story. It seems like I tell it every year. I got to see him when he wrestled um the older Matthias. Um Chase. Chase Matthias. He really gave it, you know, that was down at Watertown. I'm like, wow, this kid's really good. He could tell he was young. And and it just seems like every year, whatever weight class he's at, 195, 215, and now obviously being number one ranked at 285. And by the way, um, the guys around him ranked are uh Dunningan, Havlish, uh Walshire, Ogee, and then Hatfield. That's rounding out the top six. But it seems like every single year it's just like there's just monsters in his weight class. 215 last year, taking fourth place, was loaded. State Brackett, think about this. Uh Garekovczynski, Max Mathias, Cade Splinter, uh, and obviously Preston taking fourth. And by the way, the guys behind him, Leland Havens and Elliott Havelace rounded that one out. Uh, I'm gonna tell you something, Teague. If I was gonna get into a street fight and I could take six six guys get with me, give me the top six wrestlers at 215 pounds. I'm feeling darn pretty darn good about my chances.
SPEAKER_01You know, I mean the E2 upperweights have been loaded. The E2, yeah, absolutely. Uh anything else on New London for we trained.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, New London. Uh Trevor kind of giving him a little do. Uh 40 wins last year, 132 pounds. Uh, had that very close seven to six loss uh in the opening round. So uh just impressed with with uh New London. They were the number two seed, made it to the finals, lost 48 to 30. The Coleman. Uh great, great team year and individual year, obviously getting the state champ uh another place winner.
SPEAKER_01Shout out to Coach Krieger and the crew up there. Oh, yeah. Ocanto Falls, who was seventh in the Antigo sectional with 126 and a half points. They are turning 11 of their 13 starters at 94 points. It'll be led by uh state qualifier Isaiah Holtz, who made it at 120 pounds.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, 36 wins for Isaiah. He is, I was trying to see. Um, I I thought I had that he was ranked. I'll have to go back and look at that. Uh Logan Bazil is also ranked number 13 at 120 pounds. Uh Jagger Reed, who took third place. Um, well, here's why he took third place. We always talk about that guy and who's ahead of him. Uh, a couple guys by the name of Lice Gang and Otto were in front of him. Um, pretty, pretty solid wrestlers from what I remember. Two guys that are gone. So uh Jagger's looking uh looking pretty good there as far as the heavyweights go. Uh Levi Momarts took third at sectionals, and here was an address of sometimes I like to dig in to see how close they were to possibly going. Uh by the way, coming in at number 10 at 138, uh he had a one. I always love these gritty matches. He had a 1-0 semifinal win over Jaden Cornell of Freedom. Uh Levi was winning one to nothing. Cornell took bottom, and Momarts wrote him out to advance to the finals. The one-zero ride out, just gritty team. Obviously, wasn't able to finish that one off, lost in the finals, and then you know the wrestler back. But uh, you know, had that gritty semifinal win to add to his resume.

They're returning third place sectional finishers Nate Hassenjäger and Ray Johnson Jr., along with fourth place sectional finisher Anthony Esteves and one more top eight finisher.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, looking solid. 10 returners. Ray Johnson 30 and 7, 17 last year, 138. Nate Hassenjäger uh took third, was the number four seed, made all in the finals, lost to Hunter Seafeld, and the wrestle back 12 to 5. But uh, you know, solid wrestler by the by the young fella.

At Team Sectionals, they lost to uh Merrill 48-30. They are returning eight of their 11 starters and 108.5 points. They are losing the big man, the state champ at 285 last year. Big Thunder, Kale Lice gang. Yeah. Up there returning uh Logan Baineline, who qualified at 126, Aiden Peters, who uh placed sixth at 144 at state, third place sectional finisher, Owen Lindzmeyer, fourth place sectional finisher, Zach Lee, and uh a handful of other top eight sectional finishers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they have three ranked wrestlers. Alex Lee is number 14 at 120. Uh Logan is uh uh mainline is number eight at 132. He had 35, he was 35 and six last year, lost in the blood round. Aiden Peters, 43 and 3 last year, came in as the number three seed. Um, and his only regular seed loss or regular season loss was the Owen Neppel. Way back at Battle of the Babies, just on a terror during the regular season, was uh Mr. Peters. He is number three at 157 pounds and has a career record of 129 and 16.
SPEAKER_01Good stuff. Now we have uh Shawneau, who was sixth in the Anago sectional with 133 and a half points. They lost 47 to 30 to Freedom at team sectionals, bringing back six of their 11 starters and 60 points, losing a couple state qualifiers and Dane Hodkowitz and Drew Shellberg. They're returning to Marcus Bresgall, who uh qualified at 165, along with third place sectional finisher and Nicholas Walkaw and a couple other top eight finishers to boot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Nicholas Walkow, he's coming in ranked at number 12 at 120 pounds. Marcus Bresgull at 165 had 33 wins, had a really good first round, didn't end up getting uh win at state, but had a really good first round match, only losing three to nothing uh to two-time state medalist Adam Haas of Shoreland Lutheran. Marcus is number seven at 175 pounds preseason rankings.
SPEAKER_01All right, we are already at the penultimate team in this one. That's crazy. No, no, we're not Wapeka. Oh, never mind. Sorry, not the penultimate. I was the penultimate team on the first page, I should say. A lot of notes in this one. Wapeka. The comets were 13th in the two rivers sectional with 74 points. They returned 10 of their 12 starters and 70 points. Led by third place sectional finishers, Pierce Carl and Ryan Frank, along with four more uh top eight sectional finishers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Ryan Frank lost to Logan Koutzer of Keel, 7-4. Sudden victory in the semifinal, so pretty close to going there. And and also another guy was close, Pierce Carl at 120 pounds. One shy win of 30, lost to Aiden Dahl of Chilton Hilbert, uh 64, 6-4 in the semis. Fun thing about Aiden Dahl is uh he the kid really lets it fly, right? So it's gonna live or die by the sword, so to speak, but uh overall just a fun kid to watch. Um Bryson Prize, the head coach. Oh, another wrestler. Oh, I uh let me go back to this. Vernon Carl, he is a freshman coming in for Wapaca. He is number four at 113 pounds, so must have had a good youth career to come in already at uh, you know, quote unquote in the medal ranking, so to speak. Uh Bryson Price, the coach, is talking with some conference coaches, and uh what they're saying about this guy is he's got the right attitude to build a program or to make it strides uh in the middle school. We know that conference up there, that you know, I don't know, 30-some teams in that conference, but uh it's just a juggernaut of a middle school conference. And and the at the that level, they're starting to make great improvements and get numbers out. So obviously we'll see that transform up to the high school for Wapaca.
SPEAKER_01See, we are now at the penultimate team in this one. And uh one of the teams, I'm sure we have a lot to talk about right now, but I'm sure we'll have more to say about them later, too. They are bringing back 11 of their 14 starters from that Team State semi-group. A lose one-state qualifier, Mr. Rylan Conan. This is what they're bringing back. Big inhale. Xander Bayman, who qualified at 106, Jaden Lenoble, who placed third at 113, Jose Azwara, who qualified at 120, Jake Bus, 132, QB1, Carter Birdishaw, third at 144, Colin Hamm, who uh won a state title in a sophomore year at 157, Connor Manerl, who qualified at 190, and Wyatt Wetzel, who made it at 215, along with third place sectional finisher Cooper Leski, fourth place finisher Cannon Stickman, and one more top eight finisher. I feel like I almost just listed off the whole roster there, Steve. Before you go, yeah, what do you got? I know this is a show about high school sports, but they uh they are kind to us. Jake Bus's parents make the best Bloody Marys, maybe in Wisconsin. It was pretty good, and I want to thank them. I got to stop at the bus stop in Fremont on my way back from Door County last summer. And uh pretty darn good, Steve.
SPEAKER_00That's awesome. Now you uh I'm I like me a good bloody Mary, so that makes me uh it might be worth the trip. Um T, you and I were calling the action. I I just it's like Wy League of Fremont and Aquinas, great match, right? I mean, there was just some toss-ups in there that didn't go Wyoga Fremont's way that I just think were the turning point. I was trying to think of the one. Um 106 was a was a big one, and then 157 uh was I think the other big one. But it just kind of seemed like it's uh Wide Weague of Fremont coming in as the number one seed we talked about in a previous one. I just think Aquinas um just seemed like they were a team of destiny because I thought it was Y Week of Fremont's last year to win. But uh it is uh you you nailed it. They have so much coming back. I'm trying to think of where to go. I have probably it looks like a novel worth of notes here. Uh Ham looked impressive with his 13-9 uh finals win over Gavin Tritz. He was 56-2 last year. Jaden Lenovo, uh a couple guys in a row that like tight matches, had a 4-2 round one win over Leighton Grunenfelder, uh, 6-3 sun victory loss in the semis to Wayland Fry, and then a 4-1 tight one for third. Uh he's coming in number six at one. Yeah, he's number six at 132. Ham's number one at 165. Uh, you talked about QB1, another guy that likes tight matches. Birdie Shaw. Uh he had he had the same score, sudden victory wins at at state. Nine to six, sudden victory win in the corners, and then again for third place. 43 and 6 last year, number five, ranked at 157. I'm gonna take a deep breath as well. I gotta give these guys their dues.

He is a freshman incoming wrestler. Hopefully I'm saying his last name right. If not, we'll get that pronunciation. Xander Bayman, who you just mentioned, number five at 113. Uh Azura is number seven at 126. Bus is number three at 138. Crew record 112 112 and 40. By the way, Connor Mannell, number 12 at 215. They are ranked from top to bottom. There will be no holes for Y Weager Fremont.
SPEAKER_01And uh last but not least in this sectional, we have the hometown of uh the Silver Fox, Steve Lurquin. Wright's town. They were 12th in the two rivers sectional with 78 points. They are turning all eight of their starters, including Easton Feltchlin, who plays fourth at 120, along with third place sectional finisher Dawson Smet and six more who plays top eight at sectionals. Feel like we've been talking about Eastland Feltchlin for a while. Kind of crazy that he's a senior now.
SPEAKER_00It is crazy. He's like a human highlight reel, right? We have uh I think we have a couple different clips on Instagram of him. He's just he's he's fun to watch, two-time state medalist, 37 at 6 last year, number three at 132. And I think the reason why he's fun to watch is we we've seen several of these matches. He's just never out of it, right? He just uh he's he's gonna live or die. You know, it goes goes cowboy, as Matt Verbaton says. And uh uh I I think it's it's very entertaining, and it's it's gonna be a good season watching this coming year. Um, they have two other ranked wrestlers, Dawson Smet at 190. He's ranked number 10, and they also have an incoming freshman that's ranked number six at 113 pounds. That's Gavin Lamers.

My wife and I went out to eat in Milton last night, and uh saw Russell Leary, the famous and great wrestler. He listens to all these, doesn't listen to him live, but he goes back and listens. And he did say, he goes, You guys throw names out there real fast. He goes, I'm old, you gotta slow down a little bit. And I said, We'll do our best. We'll do our best.
SPEAKER_01I can teach I can teach him to listen on uh you can uh go like one and a half speed or half speed. Uh, I'm gonna say my number one is Luxembourg Caskell, and my number two is Wy Week of Fremont. I should have gone backwards, is what I should have done. I usually do that. No, you're good. All right, let's go top four-five. I got a little conference battle going here. We're gonna go, we're gonna go Denmark is my number five, and O'Connell Falls is my number four. And then my number three team is Freedom. Oh, now I know why I started the top because the most conversation I'm gonna have is I have a between my sixth team is between four teams. I have um I have Wright's down returning eight of eight. Obviously, they have a freshman coming in, and I know numbers will be up for them, just an inside source. Uh Wapaka, I think, is in the discussion, although only ever three that that place in the top five uh at sectionals and no state qualifiers returning. I think you also got to mention Sturgeon Bay Sebastopol, uh returning ten. Four, but only four were in uh the top five, and then uh they did have two third place guys, right? So no state qualifiers returning, and then uh Seymour return eight, obviously team sectionals last year. Also returning four that place in the top five at Sectionals, but two state qualifiers returning one third. My biggest concern about picking Seymour is they only had 11 last year, right? It's kind of a kind of a numbers game. Oh, wait, did I give you, I did give you uh my number three was Freedom Teak. Sorry about that. I didn't know if you heard that or not. All right. And then uh, but I am gonna pick Seymour as my number six. I think uh even if they don't have a full team, the the strength that they have, particularly particularly, well part of the thing. The word I can't say. Yeah, whatever T just said, at this sectional, having the hammers is gonna score you a lot of points. So uh I'm gonna take Seymour as my number six with those other three teams, Sturgeon Based Fasketball, Opaca, and Wright's down battling for that seventh spot.

I just feel confident Wyatt Week of Fremont and Luxembourg Casco are gonna be top two. Correct. My uh four of five matchup is going to be a Denmark versus Seymour. My three seed is freedom and my six seed uh O'Connell Falls. So I have the same ones as you, and I'm just gonna uh somewhat pair what you said, Steve. And I actually I think the only difference in ours, aside from the order of the seeds, is I feel I feel pretty confident about this being my top six. I know Seymour returning eight. They only had 11 last year might hurt a little bit, but they still return a big chunk of points. Like they have more points coming back than Ocano Falls, but less starters, which could put them in the driver's seat ahead of the is it the Panthers? O'Connor Falls are the Panthers. Nice. And the other teams that you mentioned, I do like the numbers. Uh I just think with these top six specifically, this three through six returning, incoming numbers, like what they got at postseason last year. Like I just feel good with the numbers and the talent combined. So I see this being my top six. I feel good about it. But if any of the teams that you mentioned make it, yeah, that wouldn't might not be totally surprising. All right.

Pull up my stats on the side. Seymour turning eight, 108 points, and uh Denmark, they are also bringing back eight, 109 points, Steve. The big question with this one is the difference in sectionals. What I should have done is go on to WIA and maybe just checked out. Like I know it doesn't speak to both teams, but uh see what the sectional score was or what the sectional scored at individual state. I'm gonna rock with Denmark on this one because once we get to the dual setting, historically Denmark has always been closer to that 13-14 mark, and I still think that they have the talent where you don't want to give up an easy six or twelve points to them through forfeits.
SPEAKER_00Denmark, okay. Sorry, I'm trying to gather some intel here for you quick. For me, yeah, real quick on the bottom one. Uh Freedom versus O'Connell Falls.
SPEAKER_01Freedom O'Connell Falls. O'Connell Falls, I feel like they're always team sectional mainstays, or they're in our conversation. Just missed it last year. So in this case, they'll be pumped to get back this year. But they're running into a freedom team. I mean, when freedom is down, they are not down for long. And I kind of think they start a little resurgence here with a win over the Panthers.
SPEAKER_00Oh, team, here's a lot. I this is what I was trying to find for you. I don't have that matchup, so I didn't have the score handy. But Freedom beat O'Connell Falls last year, 39 to 38.

SPEAKER_01Probably, yeah, probably gonna be another close one. And oh, I still gotta do my semis. My apologies. Denmark versus Wyatt Fremont. Denmark, like I said, still good this year. Wyatt of Fremont just a little bit better. Uh I'm not gonna talk too much about it. Uh I just think Wyatt of Fremont's talent. And this they have just got so much postseason experience, like especially the senior class the last few years. I feel good taken at Wyatt Week of Fremont in this one. Although Denmark is kind of our party spoiler, Steve. Good for them, happy for them. But usually they are a team that commonly upends our picks, and for some reason, we just never we still don't lean towards them. Although one of us picked them to make team state last year.
SPEAKER_00Do you remember who that was? I I'm not asking to be uh No, I I do not. No, okay. One of us didn't so long ago now. They they had a lot of seniors. Well, obviously they graduated a lot, so we I was big on Denmark last year. I think you might have been the one to take. Um I think I was, and I went with uh Chill Hill. Good good group of guys that coach up there in Denmark.
SPEAKER_01Freedom and Luxembourg Casco. I think uh even since I just started following wrestling in 2010, uh like how many times have these two teams seen each other in the postseason? Freedom, good resurgence by getting a win in the first round. I just don't think it's happening against this LC team. Again, could we see six to eight state qualifiers for the Spartans, even out of the sectional potentially yes? And we always know they usually have the depth of boot. Maybe Freedom could provide a matchup problem. Uh I'm taking a Luxembourg Casco to move on to the final. So that sets it up for me, Steve. I have Wy Week of Fremont versus Luxembourg Casco in the first place match. And Denmark versus Freedom in the third place match.
SPEAKER_00Very good. Yeah, on for mine, I'll just go to the bottom one. Uh Freedom, great numbers returning. Seymour, not as much. I think uh uh hopefully, I should say hopefully, this might be bulletin board material for the team shirt that I am wearing, but I'm gonna say Freedom, Freedom Advances. I'm not gonna offer a lot of discussion on that one, uh, the semifinals. O'Connell Falls, Denmark. I was kind of leaning one way. Um, I think Denmark, Ocon Falls, two just historic programs, right? I mean, I grew up in that area, and it's like I remember as a kid going to back in the day when you had to go, they put the brackets up and you'd look. And anytime I saw a wrestler from Denmark or Ocon Falls, I'm like, oh man, you know, it's like just that that history of dang it, I gotta wrestle a really tough kid. And uh um great, uh, I think this is a great first round matchup, great four-five. Uh originally I was gonna go one way, but one thing that led me to go the other, uh, O'Connell Falls returns more uh versus eight starters for Denmark. Not necessarily something that was too big of a concern for me, Denmark, is Denmark has more. Uh they have six versus four guys that placed in uh the top five, which is a big uh score for me. Uh the reason why I'm gonna go one way is one team returns 25 wrestlers overall, the other team returns 14 wrestlers overall. That's excluding what I don't know who they have coming in as freshmen. I had this one as a tight one until I knew that. And with based off that piece of intel, uh I'm gonna actually, I'm switching my original. I'm gonna go with O'Connell Falls advancing to the semifinals.

SPEAKER_00Overall. That's what they had on the on the skinfold, right? That's what uh I took a look at. So they could have a whole bunch of studs coming in as freshmen and make me eat my words. But I will say this, Teague. Um you got the little icon. There it is. Um after all that talk, it really doesn't matter as far as this goes because Luxembourg Casco, I have rolling over whatever team advances out of that 4-5 matchup. Um, bottom side, I did take a little, I did do a little deep digging here. I was leaning one way. Obviously, I picked Wide Wigger Fremont as my number two for a good reason. They have a lot returning. Freedom is as well. They have a lot of good ranked wrestlers. Obviously, uh they have a state runner-up transfer coming in, which is gonna make their program strong. Uh, it just traditionally, you you you nailed it to a T when you said um they were down for a year, but they're not gonna stay down. Here's the um I was leaning towards one team and then I found this piece of information, and I know you could look and say last year's last year, but uh I I do look at last year's results, especially because uh you know Freedom's returning a lot, but so is Wide Weague of Fremont. They're they're they're returning 11. Freedom has returning. I put 12 even though it was 11, but add the one, right? Um, but last year, I'm using a little transitive property to to uh um enforce enforce my pick. Um Wide Weague of Fremont beat Shioctin on 129th, so that's January 29th, 52 to 27. Freedom lost to Shioctin 53 to 24 on January 20th. So comparison with the same team, Shiocton a solid program. Uh, with that reason and just returning a whole bunch of ranked wrestlers and stud wrestlers, right? State qualifiers. Uh, I'm gonna have Wyga Fremont advancing to the finals to face Luxembourg Casco.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so one more time while I get Steve's bracket finished setting up here. My third place match, Denmark and Freedom. Steve has O'Connell falls in freedom in his third place match. First place. We both have Wy Week of Fremont versus Luxembourg Casco. Steve, take it away. All right, here I am. Oh, by the way, you're getting a little love from Antonio. He said that you were smart taking LC at number one.
SPEAKER_00Well, I don't get called smart very often, so I'll I'll take it, Antonio. Appreciate it. Uh, let's go freedom will kind of fall. I think um I didn't even look this up last year uh as far as who wrestled who or who won. I don't think it matters. I think freedom's just returning, uh, they return about the same amount, right? 11 versus 12. Uh, but I think freedom's just too strong of a program, so I think they're to take third place. Um, and then it takes me to my championship. I don't have a lot of conversation with this one. I think we talked about the storyline already. Uh Luxembourg coming down from D1, Wygo Fremont coming up from D3. They meet in D2, right? I mean, there's T, you're a fantastic writer. There's there's storylines you could write all day long with that one. I kind of already said it, right? I think uh Luxembourg Caskell, um, and uh when I say this, it's a for Luxembourg Caskell's down year is a couple down years is really, really still really good. They went up to a very tough D1 sectional at a time where they were they were extremely young, right? For Luxembourg Casco, they weren't uh um, you know, they could still battle there, but obviously not take on those, those take on and win. Whatever. I shouldn't say they could take them on, right? Um I don't want to like anybody to get ticked off with my words. I'm saying you know what I'm saying though, Tete, right? Um I think if you take on this year's, this year's Luxembourg, this year's next year's Luxembourg program, from what I know of the numbers, and you put them back up in that sectional, up in D1 with Kakona and Bayport, and now obviously Coleman. Wow. That that would be fun. That would be uh a word I've overused on this podcast, a slobber knocker. I just think they have so many good things going on. Uh Wywood Fremont is I think it's gonna be a great duel. Um Wywood Fremont, what they they over the last couple years shown is that they're a strong program. They can get there. Now they gotta like they gotta have that signature win. And that signature win would be huge over Luxembourg Casco. Can they do it? I think they can, but um, I just think Luxembourg Casco now coming down to division, they're just they're uh they're licking their chops, just ready to go uh win a state title. So I have Luxembourg Casco advancing uh to the finals. I don't have a wrestle back because Freedom and Wild League uh Fremont already wrestled. Uh but I will tell you this, and I said this last week when we did the Evansville sectional. Um I thought Evansville or Mount Horror Barnaval, and I spoke too soon, right? I said, Well, I think the second place team at that sectional, sectional E, has a good shot of being the uh at-large team. Yeah, they do, but I think um, you know, either Luxembourg Casker or Wide Week of Fremont, whoever is the second team out of this team sectional, they have a really good shot of being that at-large team and go to state. It'll be it'll be interesting to see how that all shakes out. Yeah. I would like to see this team if let's say let's say if it finishes as I say, let's say it's LC is number one and Wide Weague of Fremont number two. Could it happen? I think it could, right? Could Luxembourg, even though they're in the same team sectional, be the number one seed? And Wide Weague of Fremont be the number two seed. It yeah, very, very well could. Yeah, that's that would be that would be crazy. I didn't just think about that.
SPEAKER_01It's uh I know because Bayport ended up uh where did all the wildcard teams end up with seeding last year? Fifth, sixth, and sixth, I think. Yeah, I'd have to look. I I don't know off the top of my head. I wonder if the individual losses at sectionals and team sectionals, I wonder if that just kind of hurts them. Like because you got second, so you lost more than the first place. So I don't know. You just have to have a really strong resume outside of sectionals as well.
SPEAKER_00Right, but the resumes from all year, is it all year long or is it just it's it's all year, like it'll use head-to-head stuff and whatnot. And well as I say that, I know Evansville guys listen to this and they say, hey, hold on. Here we are, folks, right? So yeah, we'll see, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Steve, I think you kind of nailed it with your analysis, and uh, I don't have much else to add. I mean, you look at transitive property and dual scores last year, you you could say that Luxembourg Casco was a top five team in D1 last year, and then just uh they were on the unfortunate end of individual sectional brackets or matches, and uh yeah, you can't you do need to add the context that they were in the toughest sectional with only bringing back two state qualifiers. I think if they were in one of the Northeast D2 sectionals last year, we're talking about seven to eight qualifiers, and I'm guessing they are hungry at the team, the coaches, the community to get back, not to the barn, it'd be at the lacrosse center. Yeah. And for now that they have coming back, this is a great group to get back onto the team state setting scene, and I feel uh very confident in Luxembourg Casco making it to Team State this year as the wild card because Wy Week of Fremont's gonna beat them in the finals.
SPEAKER_00Wow. Totally didn't see that coming. Really?
SPEAKER_01And uh I never thought you'd hear this about a Wrightstown guy, but Steve might be the LC people's favorite right now. Well, uh, yeah. You uh that surprised me. I I do think maybe Luxembourg's uh a small favorite, I would say, but I think Wyowiga Fremont has the talent and the pedigree just out of recent to to pull it off.
SPEAKER_00And and the motivation, right? I mean, I think the last two years, two years ago, I think they thought they were gonna be, you know, they they thought they were gonna be champs last year. I think they thought they were gonna be, I mean, for good reason, they they're a darn good team, right? So you wrestle.
SPEAKER_01Steve, the chat the chat delays a killer right now because Jamie said totally redeem yourself. Oh well, you were going one way. Um I'm sure we're getting another message here soon. Yeah, we sure are.
SPEAKER_00Maybe not as friendly wording, but right. I I did like how you did that. They are going to team state as the at-large team. That was funny. That was that was really good.
SPEAKER_01I think that is uh a team sectional. I mean, that final has got to be right now. See, maybe aside from D2E, like for sure, one of the top two finals you'd look forward to seeing at team sectionals.
SPEAKER_00Well, and think about this freedom is a strong team. You take them and you put them into a different sectional, right? And uh obviously not D2 sectional E, but there's probably one where they could argue they're in the top eight as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Agreed. Uh man, that was uh an adventure of uh of a bracket selection there. That was fun. Let's go back to the screen here, and even more traitorous. It was a long con because I have my Spartan shirt on. That was something, Antonio. Uh it yeah, a little bit of a change. You know, we gotta keep things exciting here. Mid-September, spice up the wrestling talk, make some make some big picks. That's all you can do. Um I do know this, it comes at the risk. If you're making a pick wrong about Luxembourg Casco, and and you're wrong, you'll you'll be hearing about it.
SPEAKER_00And they're not uh they don't really like they're not too vocal about it. They just when you walk by them, they just give you the look. All right, they just give you that little smile. The L C. There you go. Yeah, and then they look at you like you know, and I go, Yeah, I know, I know.
