Welcome to the Wisconsin Wrestler Podcast with your co-hosts Teak Fenwick and Steve Lurquin.
SPEAKER_01Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to another edition of the Wisconsin Wrestler Podcast. I'm your host, Teak Fenwick, coming to you live from Holman. Joining me as always from Toshkinong, my co-host, Steve Lurquin. Steve, great to be here.
SPEAKER_00Pumped to be here. As always, always excited for Northwest Wisconsin D3 Wrestling. Great, great history, great tradition up there. But uh Teague, before that, how was your week? I forgot to even find out. How did uh you commentated the football game on Friday? Holman Holman won 42 to 6. So that's their biggest win because they I've been checking the scores. They've been pretty uh pretty tight, pretty close. Close tilts, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Then uh went home to uh to Mtown this weekend, hung out with mom and dad on Santa Sunday. Yep. To bring the dogs with you? I did. Nice, and they have been sleeping all day today. And I'm not gonna tell a new recliner. Nice! Broke that in during NFL Sunday.
unknownNice.
SPEAKER_01It was time. Is it a rocker recliner or just a recliner? A rock, like, oh, you can rock in it. I don't know because I've just had a recline the whole time. So oh, gotcha.
SPEAKER_00Well then I think if it's a true recliner, you can't rock in them. So that's probably an uneducated question on my part as far as furniture. Uh how was your weekend, Steve? Pretty good. Pretty good. Reft on Friday. Not gonna say which game I had. Really good one though. Seven to six. Seven to six was the final score. So just look up scores that were seven to six and you can figure out which one I'm at. But great for you you would think it's like it wasn't a lot of offense. There was. It was just really good defense overall. Um, and then a little bit of bend and break, a couple turnovers. So it was a lot of fun. A lot of fun. Even the opposing coach, I'm sorry, the losing coach said we did a good job. So if the losing coach says he did a good job, you pretty much did. Because usually it's only the winning coach that likes how you rest the game. You you know you did something right.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Correct. Agreed. Correct. Yep.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_01Well, now I'm gonna try and figure out. You told me already. I should just know this, but that's right. I'm gonna try and figure out.
SPEAKER_00And then uh we did go on Saturday night to your favorite fish, uh, fish place. So uh no fish that night, but we did hear listen to some good music. Uh Lucy's?
SPEAKER_01That'd be Lucy's, absolutely. Two favorite places in that area, Lucy's and Anchor Bar. We had some fun there. Good times, good times. Uh Steve, like you said, D3 sectional A. I mean, we we got a twofer tonight. Uh D3 sectional A that we're starting off with, and uh stay tuned in for some Southwest gals wrestling. Got girls sectional E right after this one. So it'll be a jam-packed night of a Wisconsin wrestling talk covering over 56 teams. And you could probably guess there's no overlap between either of the teams in those sectionals. D3A, Steve, you already gave uh a great uh preamble for it. So I'll tell you what, I'm just uh I'm excited for the team race in this one, and there's gonna be a few strong teams coming out of here.
SPEAKER_00I I mean just uh I have it kind of as a three-way, you know, three-way race at the top. Those three have really set themselves up. We'll figure out who those are. Uh but before we do that, Teague, we've got to do a little bit. I like your uh um, I had a cadot shirt on. I switched to my Ladysmith shirt. I've been at this one in the queue for a while. Uh, your cadot, I don't know what you even call that, three-quarters it, whatever it is. I wear that. I really enjoy wearing it, although I can't wear it outside right now because uh the bees really like it. Are you sure it's not the Hornets? Well, it could be the Hornets, yeah. I probably should have gone with that one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, if any podcast, any preview with Cadot, I just I probably just need to put this. Although I do have Lady Smith gear too. But this thing is cozy. I this classifies as a quarter zip because it zips about a quarter of the way down. Quarter zip. What'd I say? Three-quarter zip in the middle of the day. If it was a three-quarter zip, it might look kind of silly. Like you have it zip, like it could go almost all the way down, but not.
SPEAKER_00That's that's pretty awesome. That might be a new fashion trend that might start real soon. Um, I will tell you this, my Ladysmith fans, if you're wondering where my hat is, you did give me a hat. Uh, my oldest daughter, yeah, she definitely stole it. I stole it back from her and she stole it back. She stole it from me because um outfits are right. It must be a craze or maybe it's going out or whatever, but uh when they go out, they wear bucket hats sometimes. So she steals my bucket hat. She really likes the Ladysmith wrestling one. So thank you very much. I didn't get to wear it very long, if at all.
SPEAKER_01Great conversation starter when you're out. Yeah, my dad's a podcaster. I don't think I get involved in that one at all. All right, D3 sectional A. Let's get into it. Starting off with Baron. We ought to give a first and foremost shout out to longtime Barron coach Daryl Stevens. Heard through the grapevine that he's retiring. So, Daryl, thank you for your service to the community of Baron, the wrestling program, and just the sport of wrestling in general. The Bears last year were 12th in the Ladysmith sectional with 42.5. They returned five of their six stars and 37.5 points. Bringing back a Brady B. My Valentine, who qualified at 138, along with two more top eight finishers.
SPEAKER_00That's right. And the good news for Barron is they uh the five returners, all of them were juniors last year. So get some underclassmen in there. You'll have a great leadership in that program. They have two Brady's returning. Brady Valentine, as you mentioned, he's number eight preseason rankings on the grappler at uh 138 pounds. I'm sorry, at 157 pounds, 138 last year. He had 36 wins. He's eight shy of 100, is Brady and his teammate Brady Franson, who Teague mentioned as a sectional qualifier at 150 pounds, had 28 wins. I'm sorry, check that. 25 wins last year.
SPEAKER_01We're going to Boysfield. Mike, thanks for tuning in. We're gonna be some good listening for you.
SPEAKER_00Driving home from the Ox. Is he driving home to Brookfield from the Ox or is he driving home to his He's gotta be driving home? Yeah, school tomorrow. He's gotta be driving home.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, gotta be back to Brookfield. Um hey, after Boysville, I think I have to go check on my dog quick, but uh do Boysville.
SPEAKER_00They're fourth in the boys. I can take everybody through Bruce then.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I got you. Boysville was fourth in the Ladysmith sectional with 148 points. They beat Cameron 39 to 36, lost to Glenwood City 55 to 24, and Ladysmith 58 to 24 at team sectionals, returning seven of their 10 starters in 81 points. They do lose Zach Hellendrung, who felt like we've been talking about him for I was gonna say years, but like eight years, I'll say. He was third at 285. Uh returning Isaiah Romero, who qualified for stay at 215, along with third place sectional finisher Eli Caselius, fourth place sectional finisher Leah Moore Girard, and three more top eight finishers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, let's talk a little bit about that team trip for Boysville at Team Sectionals last year. They'd have a round win run win over the comments from Cameron. They were down 30 to 36. You know, here's the good thing is if you're down by six and you have two matches to go, and you got Isaiah Romero uh waiting there, and Zach Hellendrung, you get Romero got a one-zero win, and then Hellendrung got the walk-off pin, so that's uh helped them advance to the semis. Romero, 51 wins last year, got a round one win, lost nine to seven in that second round, had a 39-second pin before bowing out in the blood round. But uh uh Isaiah is coming in at number five on the season. All right, what are you uh wait? Was that Boyceville? I just finished up with Boyceville. It's about ready to let everybody know that uh uh Bruce, Bruce is our next team.
SPEAKER_01Bruce, and they did not have anyone on their roster last year, so unfortunately, don't have much for Bruce or anything. Uh what are they? Is Bruce the Raiders?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'll have to get back to you. I didn't know that one, right? Uh you know, history, Bruce has a history of strong wrestlers. Um, not not a lot of wrestlers, but strong wrestlers, right? Isn't um uh Chris Hansen from Bruce?
SPEAKER_01That was his no, that was the school that he coached at, right?
SPEAKER_00Coach, who was um who's that Hayward? What's uh um Chris um Gerber? Kurt Kurt Gerber, he's from Bruce.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think you're right on that. I can't question it because I'm not confer I'm not 100% sure. Uh um I just gotta say, the dogs taking my attention away from the podcast has been a big recurring theme during sectional preview season, it seems like. I don't know what's changed, perhaps, but this one I knew what it was right when I thought I heard whining. And uh my one dog, she's a 60-pound pillow basically. Um she was on the recliner when I left her to come do this, and I don't think she could get off of it. I yeah, I think the concept of recliners are a scary thing to dogs. You step on something and the whole thing comes down. So needless to say, she was overjoyed when I came to save the day.
SPEAKER_00Deag is not gonna be able to use his dog as a so uh with emotional support dog, especially if you go up an escalator in a mall. Um Teague Bruce is the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders.
SPEAKER_01Close. Okay. Nice. Well, next up we have a team that generated quite a bit of buzz for themselves last year. The Hornets of Cadot. Third, and uh Independence Gilmington sectional with 188 and a half points. They beat Spring Valley Elmwood 46-22, lost to Auburnale 36-26, beat Stratford 42-31 at team sectionals for a good third place finish. They were turning nine of their 12 starters in 124 points. They lose Mitch Reinekee, who qualified for state last year, but bringing back quite a bit of talent that wrestled at state, Riker Moskowitz, who qualified at 106, Wyatt Anderson at 120, Oliver Sudbrink, who placed sixth at 144, and Jacob Phelps, who made at 175, along with fourth place sectional finisher Jonathan Phelps and two more top eight sectional finishers. Kadot, uh, you know, I think we had a good reason to sell them short a little bit last year. I think we both had them as uh make team sectionals, but not win a match at team sectionals kind of deal. And naturally they exceeded expectations, and it it was a really strong team sectional performance by them. And it's a lot of momentum coming into this year.
SPEAKER_00Very much so. It's funny. I I was thinking about um the Division III version of Milton, right? We're talking about Milton having a couple down years the past few years and uh up in D1, but it's still really good wrestling. It's just down for Milton. Kadot's kind of been going through that the last few years, right? We haven't talked about them much as far as the team race. Still a really good and solid team. In fact, we're gonna be talking about them. I'll take away the any uh suspense if there was, but really interesting stat I have for them when it comes to me as far as dual mate wrestling and what they did this past year. Uh, but a solid, solid team, some tough kids. And right, do they with with four wrestlers returning from state that are all underclassmen, meaning last year they're a freshman and sophomore? That's a pretty solid lineup, especially when you have seven guys that placed uh in the top five at sectional. We'll talk about those four four wrestlers all coming in preseason uh ranked. You got Riker Moskowitz, uh it was 38 and 9 last year. Wyatt Anderson, uh Oliver Sudrank is the number 10. I'm sorry. Um I I forgot to put the rankings down, but they are ranked. I've and then uh um but here Oliver was the number 10, 10th seed. So placed above his his seed. And then Jacob Phelps lost round one, four to three, and then uh seven to four. So we had a couple good battles down at the state tournament. So yeah, I do apologize. And not I know that they are all ranked. In fact, uh, if you have anything to say on Kadot, I might be able to find their rankings here real quick.
SPEAKER_01On Kadot, uh, I think I got almost everything I needed for them. And just like you, I will be talking about them later. So not too much of a spoiler. Uh I was I was also just about to go to the grappler site, maybe see if the rankings bisectional is updated. It is working right now, which is perfect. Didn't didn't realize how much we depended on them until well, I do know how much we depend on them, but when it was down last week, we were we were struggling for a little bit during the show. We were agreed. All right, Steve. While you are all looking that up, I'll talk quick about the comments of Cameron, who were fifth in the Lady Smith section with 136.5 points, returned six of their eight starters and 95.5 points. They lose Connor Carlson, who uh qualified for state last year, but they're bringing back Corbin Holdeman, who made it at 126. Sawyer Ebner, who will play third at state at 190, along with third place sectional finisher Jason Stafford, fourth place sectional finisher Javen Nord, and two more top eight finishers. I know Cameron has a new coach this year. I don't know who it is. I just know that their old coach is gone. Numbers could leave something to be desired, but definitely not short on talent with what they have at the moment, Steve.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, right on. Uh Jason Safford, who you talked about, took three at 36 wins last year. Uh, they do have two ranked wrestlers. Both of them were at state last year. Obviously, uh state trip's gonna get you in the rankings. Holderman, 42 wins last year, did get a win in state. He's number nine up two weight classes at 138. Sawyer Abner at 190 pounds at 50 wins. Now he's number three ranked up the weight class at 215 pounds.
SPEAKER_01We got a couple of pals from southern Wisconsin tuned in, Steve. Got Jason Timlin. Thanks for the love, Jason, and uh got Andy Gross checking out the show as well. Don't know if you've had any run-ins with Andy at the Wobbly Hog, but yeah.
SPEAKER_00I didn't see Andy at all at uh the Piggly Wiggly. I see his brother every now and then at uh the local exercise watering hole. Um the exercise watering, that's a common. I don't know what to say. I was trying to figure out uh I could I just I'm not as creative with those uh transitions as you are, Teague, but I'm working on them. I'm working on them. Teague, I um you know Cameron had those two ranked wrestlers. I am gonna pop back a little bit. Um Kadot has six ranked wrestlers. John Phelps, Wyatt Anderson, Owen Fossbender, Riker Moskowitz, Jacob Phelps, and then Oliver Sudbrink. All of them six ranked.
SPEAKER_01This is a good time to say uh I forgot. Oh, I think uh Bayfield and Washburn, the teams that they have or don't have, but are listed, they are out of this sectional. It's a lot of teams from Lady Smith, as you can tell already. Then, of course, you have Kadat, and there's a couple other teams that come in from the independent sectional from last year. But a big, big one, Steve. We'll see how their numbers are. We're talking about them right now. Coming down from D2, Shaek Warehouser Prairie Farm. Fourth in their sectional with 149 and a half points, a loss to Northwestern at team sectionals 53 to 30. They're returning six of their 11 starters and 67 points. They do lose Brady Kessler, who plays fourth at 138, and Adam Foss, who qualified for state. But they're returning Trig White, who plays fourth at 157, fourth place sectional finisher Jack Olsen, along with three more top eight finishers. And man, old man, Steve, if this move to D3 happened a year earlier for CWPF, right?
SPEAKER_00There would have been some serious team state talks, I think. Uh very much. They would have been in the conversation. And who knows, right? It's that it's that next step of the program. They're competed up in D2 last year. 11 wrestlers, right? And uh only returned six of them. Are they at one of those things? Are they at one of those programs? They have those numbers, they have those guys waiting in the wings. It'd be interesting to see because I love when uh the um um combined programs, combined schools are able to make it work because sometimes it makes it make it can be a little bit difficult, especially with the travel that you have between those two schools. Uh Jack Olson Teague is ranked number six at 157, 25 wins last year. Was he a state qualifier the year before? Well, I'm not trying to put you on the spot. I thought maybe he was. Maybe you can uh I'll talk about Trig real quick. I know you're you're quick with the old uh search search uh engine, but Trig at 157 had uh had a 43-4 win or record last year, 117 wins total at his in his career. He is the number one ranked wrestler at 165 in Division III. So that's a big that's uh Trig's looking pretty good this year.
SPEAKER_01All right, I'll have an answer for you in just a sec. He Jack was uh not a state qualifier the year prior, but fourth at sectionals twice.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_01So I think kind of confused.
SPEAKER_00Maybe this is the year that he breaks through. Right, and fourth two years ago meant you were one spot from going, so yeah.
SPEAKER_01Wisconsin grappler. Best rankings in the state. Going on to our new co-op, Steve. Yep. Clear Lake Clayton. Tenth in the Lady Smith sectional with 75 points. They return all eight of their starters. Bring back a Magnum Mago, who I'm not wearing the Clear Lake gear, but I know I have the shirt hanging on my chair. Still riding the Magnum Mago wave.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome.
SPEAKER_01Singham State qualifier at 150 last year, along with third place sectional finisher Malachi Perry and five more top eight finishers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, one of those top five finishers, Benjamin LeBrie uh is in there as well, 18 wins last year. Magnum is number five coming in at 157 pounds, had 37 wins last year at 150. And here's the question, right? Clear Lake returns eight of eight. I who knows, right? There's nothing when they were with Turtle Egg, is Clayton. Um, that being Clayton, what do they bring in? Obviously, Clear Lake returning everybody. If Clayton can bring in some numbers, uh, this this co-op might be part of that that team sectional uh conversation.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I didn't dive into because you really can't. Not I don't know which kid with uh turtle lake or Clayton. Uh yeah, we'll see. They very well could be. On to uh Cornell Gilman of Lake Holcomb, 13th in the Lady Smith section with 37 points, returned three of their four starters and a 29 points, bringing back Dak Steinbach, who qualified for state last year at 144 as a freshman.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Dak's got a uh round one win, got a run one pin, that is, uh, and that at 144 is gonna be up a few weight classes. Only true the counting, three weight classes ranked number five at 165. So um and Teague, I'm gonna quick check this. Was Taten Angel was he injured last year? Come regionals, because um, I wanted to double check this. Yeah, he had to have been, right? Yeah, he is uh number one at number one ranked at 285 preseason. And he's gonna be a senior this year, right?
SPEAKER_01Yes, he is. Yep. I didn't even think about that.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, well, I you know, this is why I want to quick double check. I did these notes about a week ago, and I'm like, oh man, last week I had uh um who was it, Colton Miller with uh he entered the transfer portal that day and went to Arrowhead. I just deleted. I'm joking. He didn't. I just wrote a Milton Wrestler. Yeah, I wrote a Milton Wrestler uh under Arrowhead, which uh then we just did a little uh copy delete and then he transferred back within the show.
SPEAKER_01All right, Steve. You got some trivia for me tonight.
SPEAKER_00We are about midway through the show. We are. I was gonna have you do it. Let's do it after Cumberland because that'll make sense uh and you'll see why after Cumberland.
SPEAKER_01Well, going on to the sixth team in this sectional uh that uh their uh name starts with the C. Cumberland, which I think has to be the most amongst the guys' sectionals. Right. They were uh second in the Lady Smith sectional with 227 and a half points. Oh, maybe that's why Jason's on here, too. He's just A fan of teams with uh beaver mascots. Could be the case. They beat Lady Smith 53 to 27, lost 41-38 to Glenwood City in the finals at Team Sectionals. They're returning 11 of their 13 starters in 172 points, losing Caleb Heil, who plays fifth at 113, and Logan Peterson, who plays third at 165. But they are returning Colin Hagen, who qualified at 106, Braden Johnson, who won a state title at 138, Brody Gilbertson, who was fifth at 215, and Vince Vila Gonzalez, who qualified at 285. Also uh joining those guys, man, a lot of talent. Third place Sexual Fisher, Carter Greenwich, fourth place sexual fishers at Mitchell Monchevich and Colt Miller, and two more top eight finishers. Rumor has it, there's also a hammer that moved into Cumberland from Kentucky. Oh, really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I better write that down quick. Kentucky. Tell me a little bit about Kentucky. Are they uh never mind. All right. I was gonna say one division, two division, three division. The the Rainey brothers are from Kentucky. Uh that's all I know. Yeah, good stuff. Uh Cumberland, as you talked about, 11 starters returning plus a little asterisk. We're gonna call it uh a Wildcat possibly coming in. Um do you like that? Seven in the top five. So not only are there 11 returning, but the they're solid returners as well. Four wrestlers in the preseason rankings. Steak mentioned them all. We'll go with Colin Hagan. He is number seven at 113 pounds. Did get a round one win at state in place, but got that that victory. Braden Johnson was just an absolute stud at 52 and all 138 last year. Up a weight class is ranked number one. We'll save that ranking as far as weight class. You know, these are all estimates. Uh Brody Gilbertson, 215 pounds, a semi-big fella at two wins shy of 30. 4'3 win for fifth place. Uh that's a tight one right there to wrap up his cool center experience. He's number six. And Vince Avila Gonzalez, the big fella at 285, is ranked number nine.
SPEAKER_01I'm trying to look up Braden's record right now because he Braden potentially, depending on his schedule this year, could very well be on that record watch for career wins because he's at 156 right now. Is he really?
SPEAKER_00Okay. So yeah, 50 wins to try and figure out.
SPEAKER_01We need 56 wins to tie.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Yep. Wow. And 52 and all last year. Team sectionals, a trip to team state.
SPEAKER_01Who knows? We might need to crowdsource all the information and figure out. I think the record's getting broken this year. I just don't know by who.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, who we already mentioned um Luxembourg Casco. Uh who um Newbert. Newbert. He needed, I believe it was, was it 48 teak?
SPEAKER_01Okay, so he just needs to stay healthy essentially. Correct. Knock on wood. Uh anything else for Cumberland, Steve O. No, that's it. I'm I'm we might be talking about them in a little bit.
SPEAKER_00Fair. All right, what's your trivia? Hit. Oh, here we go. Oh, shoot. Let me scroll down here real quick. I'm excited for this one. I think you'll get it. And uh I I like the stump trivia. Teague's pretty good. Um, Teague, this is I'll I'm gonna ask you the question, and then if you get it in order, I'll give you extra kudos. If you just get it, it'll be still good, and I'll still be impressed. But in order, I'll be super impressed. Um, how many teams in this sectional lay claim to a four-time state champ? And then who are they? And if you can get the exact order that they got it, I'll give you a little extra bonus point. So four state champs from the sectional, historically speaking, right? Four times four-time state champs. Yeah, four four-time state champs. Oh, I'm sorry, I told you it already. Darn it.
SPEAKER_01So well, no, no, it's four just we'll clarify. It was gonna be my guess was four or four-timers. All right, so I gotta get all the info out there. Boysville, Kadot, Cameron, and Cumberland. And uh, three of those were in the 2020s. Boysville with uh, is it Brock Schlu?
SPEAKER_00Brock, yeah, I say slow shlue. Brock Slow. He was from um, I won't ask you the years, but he was from 2016 to 2019.
SPEAKER_01And he was he did it like three times at the same weight class, too. Which yeah, I think was he the guy that ended up like playing baseball to like he was just a very good athlete.
SPEAKER_00He was, and I believe his brother wrestled for Minnesota, but he there they were both, they were just both chiseled for granted. They were just uh amazing human beings.
SPEAKER_01And then I want to say, because we have interviewed all these guys. Um Cameron's gotta be first. Cameron's gotta be next, anyways, with Gerber. Yep, Tanner Gerber, 2019 to 22. It goes Gerber, and then uh Braden Sonenteg from Kadot. 20 to 23, yep. And then a Dawson Johnson from Cumberland. 21 to 24. Excellent. Nice work, T. Thank you, thank you. You bet. Okay, we have uh Flambeau up next, 11th in the Ladysmith sectional with 43 points. They're returning to three of their six starters and 10 points. They do lose Cole Schley, who qualified at 165 last year, bringing back two top eight sectional finishers and Carter Carrion and Kevin Verdagen. Uh, it's three top eight sectional finishers, isn't it, Steve?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you also missed Taylor Jacob, the big fellow, 285 pounds. They have a winning record last year. Uh they had nine total on the roster. I went back and took a look at the skin fold. Uh, nine total. So obviously getting numbers up there a little bit. Uh 130 kids total at Flambeau High School. Good stuff.
SPEAKER_01Home of Jim Leonard. That is correct. Wisconsin players of all time. Hey, going on to uh Glenwood City, the Toppers, the Pinstripe Warriors, who made their first appearance at Team State last year. On their uh path there, they were first in the individual sectional with 243 points. They beat Boyceville 55 to 24 and Cumberland 41 to 38 at team sectionals. Then at Team State, they lost 37 to 35 to Wyowega Fremont. They are bringing back 12 of their 14 starters from that group and 206 points. They are losing one half of the Obermuulers. Landon, who was a state qualifier last year. But they are returning. Big breath. Elliot Raddent qualified at 106. Whalen Fry, the freshman, who qualified at one who won it at 113. Sawyer Bright, 120. Will Obermueller 126. Preston Arvey 132. They're also uh bringing along third place sectional finisher Logan Hillman. Fourth place sectional finisher Whalen Wagner. Look at that alliteration. And four more top eight finishers at sectionals. You know, Steve, there can't be too many teams that have had two Whalens on their team at the same time. But if I had to pick a team that would do it, it'd be Glenwood City.
SPEAKER_00The pinstrikes. Yeah, I was taking a look at a team. They had five at state, obviously, all them returning. Those guys ranked. I'm gonna try to get here real quick. You know, actually, I'm not gonna do it. I'm gonna um do the order from the grappler because they have is it seven, eight, what, four or five? Seven ranked wrestlers. We want to get them all out. Whalen Fry is number three at 132. Monty Fry, the incoming freshman, ranked at number three as well at 106. Elliot Redens is number six at 113. Preston Arvey is number six at 144. Will Obermuller, number seven at 138. Sawyer Bright, number nine at 126. And then Whalen Wagner, number 12 at 215 pounds. So Glenwood City does not have an incoming Kentucky wrestler, but they do have an incoming Glenwood City wrestler that is uh a freshman rank. So a little bit uh small fry, if you will. Yeah, small fry. This could be fun. I uh we'll have to add both of those to the little uh the little list.
SPEAKER_01Let's move on to uh the Lumberjacks, the host of the girls' sectional I was at last year, a Lady Smith. They were third in the Ladysmith sectional with 171 points. They beat TLC 50 to 29, lost to Cumberland 53 to 27, and beat Boysville 58 to 24 for a solid third place finish team sectionals, bringing back eight of the 13 starters and 87 points. They did lose Gabe Gerber, who plays fourth at 157, and Carter Soltis, who qualified at 175. They're returning Alex McKunda, who uh qualified for state at 132, along with third place sectional finisher uh Jackson uh Bostader, Bostetter, fourth place sectional finishers Brody Summerfield and Eli Schultz, and three more top eight sectional finishers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Bostetter, I'm gonna say we'll we'll cover it all. We'll hit it three ways and hopefully we get it right, correct? Uh he's number 10 at 106 pounds, and Alex McKunda, all named team, uh named potential. That's uh I like the way that fools off the tongue. Uh he's number 13 at 138, had 42 wins last year down weight class at 132.
SPEAKER_01Next up is a McDonald's Central Catholic, who was 18th in the independent sectional with eight points. They're led by Mr. Jonathan Brady, who plays seventh at sectionals.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and a big, I mean, only wrestler, right? And a um winning record at pretty high weight class, 215 pounds. So numbers game, right? Jonathan, go up and uh recruit some of your friends off that football team.
SPEAKER_01Next up is Shell Lake, who was ninth in the Lady Smith sectional with 79 points. Turn four of their seven starters and 39 points. We'll be led by fourth place sectional finisher Asher Trudel, along with two more top eight finishers.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, those other two, Owen Leckle, uh 32 wins at 144. Jameson Buckeridge, the big fella at 285, had 36 wins, 36 and 14. So uh Asher Trudel is ranked number three at 106 pounds. A lot of ranked wrestlers in this sectional at 106.
SPEAKER_01Going to uh Stanley Boyd, where I was uh in Stanley at some point this summer. They were 11th in the independent sectional with 58 points, uh turning six of their 10 starters and 10 points, led by top eight sectional finishers Arrow uh Greenhow and uh Zephyr Greenhoe. Love the name, by the way.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Arrow had uh one win shy of 20. Zephyr Greenhoe was uh had a winning record at 113 pounds. That's a good uh one-two punch with the Greenhouse Greenhouse.
SPEAKER_01Love it. I just I looked up what a Zephyr was because I feel like there's some relation between an arrow and a zephyr, right? But hey, yeah, but Thorp Owen with the who was 16th in the independent sectional with 14 points, returning both of their starters. This uh the top eight sectional finishers, Evan Penterman and uh Jordan Wolf.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, both wrestlers, right around 20 wins. Evan Penterman went at 190 pounds, had a winning record. And Jordan Wolf, you know, there's only two wrestlers in the weight room in the wrestling room, but uh right around the same weight class makes it a little easier on the coaching staff, right? Uh but Jordan Wolf had a winning record at 19 and 16.
SPEAKER_01So, Mitch, uh it is a Packerless Sunday, which honestly might have made this Sunday a little bit better based off of how this season's going right now. Well, it's early. It's early, folks. It's early. A penultimate team in this one. Uh Turtle Lake. Just Turtle Lake now. They were sixth in the Lady Smith sectional with under 21 and a half points. They lost 50 to 29 to Lady Smith at team sectionals. They're turning seven of their 10 stars and 49 and a half points, losing their two estate qualifiers, Luke Mowan and Brandon Wright, who did make the podium with a fourth place finish at 175. They're turning third place sectional finisher, Walker and Nikonen. Fourth place sectional finisher Kane Cesares, the big man, and two more top eight finishers.
SPEAKER_00Kane Ceseras, 34 wins at 285 pounds. And Walker, the only ranked wrestler for Turtle Eight, coming in up a weight class. Uh, had 36 wins last year, 190 coming in, number 10 at 215 pounds.
SPEAKER_01And it might be Caceras, by the way. I don't know, but if there's any Turtle Lake folks tuned in, just let us know if we're doing cane, doing right by cane. Last school and D3 sectional A, uh, Unity. Eighth in the Ladysmith sectional with 104 and a half points. Turned seven of their 13 starters in 44 points. Led by third place sectional finisher Carlos uh Puglio. Fourth place sectional finisher Easton Baxter and three more top eight finishers. Fun fact at Balsam Lake, the county seat of Polk County.
SPEAKER_00Nice Polkai. Polkeye. Uh Easton Baxter had 23 wins last year, 126 pounds. Carlos Puglio, uh, who took third place as Teague mentioned, upperweight class, but uh it was 30 wins last year at 215, ranked number 11 at 285. So Unity Balsam Lake. Interesting. That was uh I remember graduating as Teague's getting the coin out, graduating from college and looking where there was teaching jobs, and I saw Balsam Lake, and I had no idea where that was, so that uh didn't make the list. Tails. Tails. Oh, Teague, let's go. Um I will say my champion first. Alright, so you're giving your top six first. Yep. Perfect. All right, so my top six, I'm gonna go backwards. Um, I have my first team on the outside looking in. I had it between Unity and Titek Warehouser Prairie Farm. I think um Tech Warehouser down a division. They've been trending up in the right direction. What scares me about them, uh T, check me if I'm wrong on that. They had 11 wrestlers last year and only returned six of them. Uh, good solid wrestlers, and then um obviously the addition of uh Angel as well could could make them push them in the top six, but I actually have to. Angel Angel goes to Cornell. Oh, yeah, I'm sorry. Wrong school. I apologize. Well, I mean, hey, tell you what, with uh transfers could be could happen. We don't know that yet, right? Just kidding. That was a total joke. Um Tech Warehouse of Prairie Farm. So I'm gonna go with Unity. Unity is gonna be with number six as far as my bracket. That's that's my cue. Yep. Sorry, I was waiting for you to put that up. Oh, we got a comment. Now it just hit me as I'm waiting for Teague. And so if I look over my oh, this is backwards, my left shoulder, and uh someone in our comments on on social media said, Hey, I love the Watertown uh shirt or sweatshirt you have up in the back, and now I'm looking at them like, where'd they get that from? I see the W and then I see the town. That's actually Wright's town. Reichstown. So I'm sure that person's not listening to this podcast. If that person's tuned in, then bless their soul. Yeah, I I I get it though. I see the W and I see the town. So, hey, you know what? Everybody thinks I'm supporting two schools at once, I'll take it, right? All right, so bracket is coming.
SPEAKER_01Oh, here, I I typed it. Yep, I I forgot about that part. The part where people see the boys.
SPEAKER_00I'll just stick with stick with the uh I'll go number six is uh I have Unity. Uh I have uh number five is Boysville, and number four is going to be Ladies. Um I kind of have my number three through one in a uh a little bit of a league of their own, so to speak, right? I have Kadat as my number three, and then I'm gonna go with uh I think you can do a coin flip on these, you know. So I'm just gonna say this. I'm gonna say Glenwood City is my number two, and Cumberland is my number one.
SPEAKER_01Okay, uh Glenwood City, Cumberland, and Kadak. Three was Kadak. All right, starting about I have a lot of teams, so uh my top four, I feel uh pretty good about. Like I'd be shocked if one of them didn't get in the top six. But Steve, for my uh five through nine, I have it all the way down to nine. Uh yeah, I think there are a few teams that can make the jump to uh be in the mix. That being said, cop out here, I'm not picking Turtle Lake or uh Clayton Clear Lake to make it because I don't know who went to Clayton. That's safe, that's fair. And I don't know how that affects either of them. So I guess that brings me down to a top eight. And uh man, tough choices.
SPEAKER_00So meaning you're not gonna take um Shell Lake either, correct? Is that what you're saying? Even though is that what about Shell? I don't have Shell Lake listed. Uh oh, wait, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Um oh my gosh, T. Uh Clear Lake. I had my legs mixed up.
SPEAKER_01So you're not I said that. I said for both of them, I'm not yeah, gotcha.
SPEAKER_00All right, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01So I'm not taking either of them, and honestly, I think so much can change between these teams, like just in terms of returning numbers, like if there's a good freshman class, that's probably enough to uh push any of these guys over. That being said, I'm gonna put CWPF as my I'm not putting them as my six. Um, I'm gonna put Unity as my six. Okay. And CWPF as my five.
SPEAKER_00Really? So that means whatever Teague says next, one of my top six is out. According to Teague.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and uh Ladysmith is my fourth. Okay, I already know who it is. Third? Cadot. And my top two seeds getting a bye. Cumberland. And Glenwood City.
SPEAKER_00Really? No boysville.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know what? Just throwing things out there, seeing if they stick. Sure. Curious. Curious. Interesting. Or as you would say, yep, there it is. Interesting. Okay, for this first round, apologies to CWPF in Unity. But like I said, I feel pretty good about my top four making it. So I just have Kadot and Unity, or Kadot and Lady Smith moving on. Top row here, uh Glenwood City and a Lady Smith. Lady Smith, they they they competed well at Team Sectionals last year, uh, just running into an absolute hammer of a team in a Glenwood City. And I got the one seed at the reigning uh D3 Sectional A champs. I have them moving on to the finals. That'll put Lady Smith in the third place match. Then Kadot and Cumberland. Cumberland, who has become mainstays in the team sectional conversation as of recent. Plenty of talent coming back. They've been pretty perpetually good, especially in the last few years. And yeah, don't know how good this Kentucky guy could be, but that's a great addition. So I'm gonna go with Cadot as a little surprise pick.
SPEAKER_00Wow, interesting. Okay, wow. No, I don't mean interest, I mean interesting, like that, yeah. Good stuff.
SPEAKER_01Thanks. So I have Kadot beating the Beavers, and that sets up my first and third place matches. GC versus Cadot and a Ladysmith versus a Cumberland. All right, Steve, take us through.
SPEAKER_00It's uh um I well, I'm gonna go pop to the bottom. My 3-6. I have Kadot versus Unity. Uh Unity, congratulations, but I just think Cadot's too strong, so let's move them over to Glenwood City. My um four five was a little bit more interesting. I was uh um Here's what's I and I late Lady Smith eight and five in duels last year. I obviously have seven seven starters returning. Boyceville also was seven starters returning. T get this. And they had some solid wins. 18 and 5 in duels was Boyceville. I like that new little tab when you search a team and you can click over and see all their duels. I am getting lost in that one. That might really change my uh analysis of how I do things. So uh last year I did do all this searching, like this team wrestled this team and over here, and it took forever. Not anymore, folks. Um, and like you said, ladies with eight and five. Um I I think I I I was that's why I was a really surprised that you'd not pick Boyceville. Just uh uh good, solid, good, solid number of wrestlers returning. Um they had some really good wins last year in duels, but they also had some losses where you're like, huh, what where did that come from, right? Where maybe they weren't at full strength, could have had some kids sick. But here's ultimately why I went with Lady Smith. They had a um they lost to him differently in the team sectional, but they had a 42-39 loss to Cumberland, right? And that was early in the year. Um, you know, check out whatever duels that wasn't as tight maybe as it appeared, but still a three-point loss to Cumberland is really solid. So I have Lady Smith moving on in Ron, but I think it's gonna be a good one with Boyceville. Uh, and then just like what you said, I have uh what you said with Lady Smith and Glenwood City. I have with Cumberland. I just think Cumberland's too good. So I have them moving on to the finals. Um wait, sorry, sorry. What'd you have moving on to the semis? Oh, I'm sorry. You know what the problem was? I I leaned over and I looked at yours real quick. I'm like, wait, okay, I have Cumberland beating Late uh Lady Smith. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Did you did you say you had Lady Smith winning, or was it just go okay, my apologies.
SPEAKER_00I said I uh based on based on Lady Smith's 42 to 39 loss to Cumberland last year. Okay. I think they they can be competitive with them. They move on, they're gonna face Cumberland. Then I said basically Cumberland is gonna advance to the finals. Um, this one down here is interesting. Cadot is a scary team, right? We just talked about them and uh you know being down for cadot, that is, right? Uh here's here's what impressed me about cadot last year. They had wins in dual meets. They were 18, uh, they only had two two dual meet losses. They had wins over Wilmot Union, they had wins over Lodi, Stoughton, Kimberly, and then uh Stratford wasn't the power that they they usually are, but for Kadot, a win over Stratford is uh, you know, that's that's big for them. So those are those are some big powerhouse schools, and Cadot took them down. Saying all that, I'm still hey there it is. Cadat last year was 16-2. I'm still going to go with Glenwood City, although I think Kadot could be a bracket spoiler, and they can, you know, I have them, um, you know, you can just pop them in down at the bottom teague, and then I have Cadot winning for third, so that's not a secret right there. But Cadot for me could be a bracket buster in this one, and they could easily win this one, um, despite what I'm gonna talk about next.
SPEAKER_01All right, so you got Cadot winning the third place match over Lady Smith, and they will be waiting anxiously for the result of Cumberland Glenworth City. That being said, Steve, I'll go real quick with you on the wrestle back. Lady Smith, could they give Cumberland a run? Maybe, depending on what they have coming in, but I still feel confident. I think when I tiered this out, I felt pretty good about my top three in any order being uh GC, Cadot, and Cumberland. So I got Cumberland beating Lady Smith. And uh, we got two separate teams waiting in the wings for that third place match.
SPEAKER_00That's interesting. That's that's gonna be a fun bracket. All right, you're up first. All right, so let's see, Glenwood City, 12 wrestlers returning. You can put a little uh mark by that and say 13 because they have an incoming freshman that is ranked. Cumberland has 11 wrestlers returning, let's say 12 with the uh uh the transplant from Kentucky. Um, I I think I've talked enough about these teams as far as what they have coming back. Uh there's one reason, and you know I'm big on it. There's one reason why I'm going with the team that I'm going to, and maybe this will give away for me, uh give it away for you. And if it does, you can start writing it in. They are returning 12 wrestlers, but eight of them are seniors. And you know how big I am on senior leadership, and those guys giving everything they have to not only get the state, but for Glenwood City, they gotta have those eyes on the prize, and they'll be in it for that championship and that run uh at the coal center. So I have Glenwood City taking the championship, and then I believe that takes me to a wrestle back with Cadot. And then um, this is the same thing. I'll say the exact what I said before. Cadat could be a spoiler in this one. I would not be surprised if they did win, but I'm gonna say Cumberland is the second best team at this team sectional. Oh, so your second place wrestle back was my Jim?
SPEAKER_01That was my semifinal match. Yeah. I got Glen Wood City and Kadot in the finals. Uh, I and Steve, I uh I echo some of your sentiments. Like, I don't think Kadot's outkicking their coverage by making the finals in my iteration. But going into this after looking up all the numbers and whatnot, I do this could be fun to go against Glenwood City, but there's just so much supporting the toppers, and like they have so many good things going for them. That if someone does take them out, I would view that as like a fairly big upset. And that's even, I know they had a three-point duel with Cumberland last year. Uh bringing so much back, you have the prominent Chin himself, Shane Strong, at the helm. I'm going with the pinstripe Warriors as my uh D3 Sectional A champs. And I would even feel good about saying I think Glenwood City wins a match at Team State right now.
SPEAKER_00I agreed. Agreed. Yeah, yeah. I mean, it's like I said, a a running on all cylinders Glenwood City is going to be scary. I I agree with you that first round win is uh I don't say guarantee, but I I I still think with that program they'll be in the mix of possibly finals and with a really good weekend, right? Does the uh does the pinstripe warriors take home that championship? That's why it's fun, right? You never know who who develops, who worked in the offseason. Everybody says in the comments every single time it's it's the wild card of the freshman, but it's also that wild card of that uh sophomore going to be a junior or junior gonna be a senior that really starts to realize that hey, I only got two years left. I only have one year left, and they put in that work in the offseason and uh they walk on the mat. Everybody wonders where they came from.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, 100% with you, it's T. We uh Dan. Sorry when you uh made this com. I don't know when you made this comment or what you made it in reference to, but Tri-County will be there soon. Is that in terms of a co-op or something in this section? Because I don't know if Tri-County would get pulled up north, right?
SPEAKER_00No, I think he's just maybe listening and saying, hey, Tri-County's gonna, you know, maybe I I took it as we're talking about teams that are up and coming and that he's saying, hey, Tri County's Tri County's working on getting themselves there, is what he's I think I that's what I took for listening.
SPEAKER_01I like it. I'm down with it. Yeah, they would be in uh what? Is it sectional D? Yeah, Center of the States, so uh well we'll find out in the back half of previews because there's like it's the three D3 previews and three girls previews. I think we finished the season off with in November. Also, when you when you said something about a guarantee, all I could think of was Tommy Boy. When you see a guarantee on the box, it just means it's gonna be a guaranteed piece of junk.
SPEAKER_00You didn't say that. Right, yeah, yeah. Next thing you know, there's money message for anyway. We'll we'll we'll stop.
SPEAKER_01Oh, here comes the two here comes the guarantee, Fairy. Well good stuff. Hey, we still have another podcast, everyone. So for the 20 of you watching, if you enjoyed this one, you just log back in in 10 to 15 minutes, and we are gonna be talking girls sectional E. That is the southwest, south central corridor of the state. And uh yeah, we'll be getting back after it.
SPEAKER_00You should stick around, folks. The girls now do a sectional, they have a sectional team sectional qualifier. So team sectional qualifier for state.
SPEAKER_01Great stuff. So check that out. We know when it is, but until next time, we will catch you on the flip side.
