Show Notes

The first commandment is "“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me."  This puts God firmly in His place as the Lord of everything and the deliverer of His people.

The second commandment is “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments" This makes it clear that we should not put anything before the Lord.

The third commandment is “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name." What is the meaning of this?

Most people think it only means using His name as a curse, but it is more than that. It also means using His name without meaning or in a frivolous or insincere way. It also means the common practice of using His name as an exclamation ("Oh My ...') should be avoided since this would be frivolous or insincere.

Don't use His name as part of a pagan incantation.

What are His names? "I AM" is His answer. Or in Hebrew Yahweh.

Respect His name! It is a strong tower in which you can take refuge.
