Dr. Mistry and Dr. Lough discuss the differences between general surgery and surgical specialties (such as urologic or plastic surgery). General surgeons are prepared to treat a wide range of conditions, from hernia repair and weight loss surgeries to stabilizing patients in need of emergency surgeries.

Dr. Lough gives us an in-depth look at hernia repairs, which can be inguinal or umbilical.  Umbilical hernias occur when either part of the intestines or fatty tissue poke through the muscle near the belly button. Inguinal hernias are similar in that parts of the intestine can make their way through muscle tissue, only this happens near the groin. Dr. Lough shares about laparoscopic hernia repair, which is a same-day surgery with minimal scar formation and recovery times.
