Wrecking Ball(s): Dr. Jacomides On the Causes Of and Treatments For Testicular Pain
Aug 22, 2020
Dr. Sandeep Mistry and Donna Lee

Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.

In this segment, Donna Lee is joined by NAU Urology Specialists partner, Dr. Lucas Jacomides. Today's topic is testicular pain. How do you know what is causing the pain in your testicle or testicles? Are there any lumps or bumps that you should be concerned about? And what does/does not constitute a ball-pain emergency? Dr. Jacomides helps listeners distinguish between pain that is likely caused by nerves elsewhere in the body, such as nerves in the back that may cause pain to manifest elsewhere, and pain that might indicate either a) the presence of cancer or b) a testicular torsion (a twisted testicle). While nerve pain is not usually urgent and may perhaps be better evaluated by an orthopedist or neurologist, pain originating from the testicle(s) that might be either indicate cancer or torsion is typically treated right away and will likely involve same-day imaging to rule out the need for emergency intervention. If your pain comes and goes, or started quite a while ago and has remained constant or only slightly increased, chances are you aren't dealing with anything urgent. If your pain increases when you change position, it is likely a nerve issue. If you suddenly develop severe pain that doesn't abate in a few hours, you should seek immediate help--180 degree or greater torsion can cut off blood supply and cause you to lose a testicle in a matter of hours. If you or a loved one is experiencing pain in your testicle(s), please call your urologist ASAP to determine the appropriate course of action.
