Show Notes Transcript

Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.

In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee talk about one of the central components of our holistic, wellness-focused approach at NAU Urology Specialists: nutritional supplements. Dr. Mistry estimates that as many as 80% of his patients are taking at least one daily supplement, and many of those patients are taking 3 or more every day. Unfortunately, most people choose which supplements they take based on incomplete or generalized information, or worse--at random. Nutritional supplements can improve your overall health and wellness, but only if you're taking the right supplements AND doing so in conjunction with other healthy lifestyle choices. At NAU Urology Specialists, our providers and staff are trained to facilitate holistic healthcare by pairing traditional medicine with other modalities like pelvic floor physical therapy, nutritional and weight loss counseling, and sexual therapies (to name just a few of our wellness offerings) in order to ensure the best health outcomes for our patients. Dr. Mistry explains how people who come in for testosterone supplements often find they've stepped through a gateway to greater health on several fronts. If you or someone you love is interested in improving any aspect of their health, please give us a call today!

Speaker 1:

Welcome back to the Armor Men's Health Hour with Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee.

Dr. Mistry:

Hello and welcome to the Armor Men's Health Hour. I'm Dr. Mistry, your host, here as always with my cohost and professional comedienne and really the heart of the show, Donna Lee.

Donna Lee:

Thank you! Tis' I, Donna Lee.

Dr. Mistry:

This is the men's health show. We've been doing this show for two years now. Our home in Austin is KLBJ news radio FM 99.7 AM 590.

Donna Lee:

You always have so many troubles with that. It's 99.7 FM and 590 AM, News Radio K LBJ.

Dr. Mistry:

The podcast is also a way that, that many people reach us. It's a way for us to be able to do the show and reach out to people who are listening in their cars, but also reaching out to people that are working out at two in the morning.

Donna Lee:

Or people listening in Europe.

Dr. Mistry:

We have one of our patients that's an ultra marathon runner, he says that he listens to our show when he goes on those ultra long runs.

Donna Lee:

That's crazy. He doesn't fall asleep at your super sexy silky voice?

Dr. Mistry:

Yes.

Donna Lee:

Speaking of sexy...

Dr. Mistry:

...keep working on it.

Donna Lee:

Let's give that guy a shout out. So happy running there, sir. I have an announcement. You know how we have been nominated as the number two best men's wellness program? We also have one of the top prostate podcasts on the internet. We have now been given an award by feedspot.com that we are the number two best sexual podcasts available on the internet.

Dr. Mistry:

We're number two!

Donna Lee:

We're again number two. And we're second largest clinic in town.

Dr. Mistry:

This show is brought to you by the urology specialty practice that I put together in 2007, it's called NAU Urology Specialists. In the Austin area, we are the second largest urology group.

Donna Lee:

Again, number two!

Dr. Mistry:

Number two. And that just means we're going to try a little harder to take care of you. Our philosophy has been a more, a more holistic approach to the care of the patient. And what we mean by that is when you come in for your urologic condition, whether it be kidney stones or prostate cancer or low testosterone or erectile dysfunction, we're not just going to give you the standard boiler plate algorithm of how to fix your problem. We're also going to look for nutritional supplement interventions, if they're biomechanical options that are available to you. We're going to look for psychological things that could impact your, your treatment. We're going to make sure that your other medical conditions are appropriately taken care of. And so we're going to turn you in from a one-dimensional person--you know, just your penis...

Donna Lee:

That's the one dimension?

Dr. Mistry:

...to a three-dimensional person.

Donna Lee:

To your boobies?

Dr. Mistry:

...where we take care of your whole self.

Donna Lee:

One, two, and three.

Dr. Mistry:

That's right. So I think a big part of that is taking the time to listen to you and making sure that we see you quickly. We are seeing patients full- time in the clinic. If you want to become a patient of ours, Donna, why don't you tell people had got ahold of us and where we are at.

Donna Lee:

That's right. You can come listen to Dr. Mistry's silky voice by calling(512) 238-0762. Our website is armormenshealth.com. You can check out our podcast on our website now, while you have been able to the whole time, but the most recent ones are at the top. So to start listening there or wherever you listen to free podcasts, and our email address is armormenshealth@gmail.com, where you can send your questions and we'll answer them anonymously.

Dr. Mistry:

Today, Donna, I wanted to talk a little bit about the supplements and the nutritional recommendations that we often will prescribe patients as they come through our clinic. And I thought it was really important to mention that this show is not sponsored at all by any of these companies. And I would say that 80% of the patients that walk in through our door are taking some kind of supplement.

Donna Lee:

You think, 80%?

Dr. Mistry:

80%.

Donna Lee:

Probably...

Dr. Mistry:

Whether it be a multivitamin, all the way to multiple supplements. And I would say that almost 10% or 15% are taking three or more supplements a day.

Donna Lee:

Okay. I know I'm taking like 10.

Dr. Mistry:

And they're just finding them on like, whatever they're reading on the internet.

Donna Lee:

At the HEB's?

Dr. Mistry:

And sometimes you'll walk into a doctor's office and they'll have like supplements on a cardboard cutout in their waiting room and not have any idea, the doctors have no idea what is being sold out there. And the patient somehow thinks that these are like,"Well, if the doctor feels that this is what something I should take, I should take it."

Donna Lee:

Right. Interesting.

Dr. Mistry:

And so, our approach to the supplements has been a little different. We have an integrative medicine specialist, Shefaly Ravula, who's a physician assistant who has done specific training and many years as, her, her mantra is"food as medicine." She believes strongly in using natural supplements to help augment our treatments that we're doing medically through pharmaceutical agents. And I think it's an incredible resource for us.

Donna Lee:

Mhmm. She's amazing.

Dr. Mistry:

Because she's going to tell us not just what supplement she heard about on Google. There are journals on nutrient medicine, on herbal medicine, on what works, and that's what we will curate for you. So you'll see very, I would say, rare forms of different kinds of herbal agents or, or supplements that we believe in that we feel like we can provide you scientific basis to use. One of the things that I've been using a lot in our erectile dysfunction patients is a, is a supplement called Arterosil, A-R-T-E-R-O-S-I-L.

Donna Lee:

Arterosil.

Dr. Mistry:

I take this myself, it's a pill that's taken daily designed to help improve the inner lining of blood vessels or endothelium. An interesting thing that you learn in medical school is that that blood vessel has multiple layers. It has like a, like a skin layer on the inside that touches the blood, then a muscular layer, and then another kind of binding layer outside. Much of the injury that occurs with high blood pressure or high cholesterol or during heart attacks or stroke or erectile dysfunction for that matter happens to the inner skin layer or the endothelium. And so what we're trying to do is we're trying to promote lifestyles that give you a healthy endothelium.

Donna Lee:

Healthy endothelium.

Dr. Mistry:

Healthy endothelium. And so that means that we want to control your blood sugar because high blood sugars can, can kill the endothelium. You want to control your cholesterol because cholesterol deposits in the endothelium. The endothelium if becomes real stiff, then, and often it becomes real stiff because of the constant pounding of high blood pressure. This is where like...

Donna Lee:

It sounds so delicate.

Dr. Mistry:

Yeah. It's a very delicate thing that we really rely on.

Donna Lee:

That we'd probably take advantage of.

Dr. Mistry:

And when you, when you drill down to the science of what's happening in this beautiful skin membrane of our blood vessels, you'll see that this is where the interaction between nitric oxide and different types of cell, cellular metabolites that help with energy regulation and opening and closing of the vessels--it's very delicate and very pretty. And if, and if you're living life hard--a lot of alcohol, cigarette smoking...

Donna Lee:

Motorcycle driving.

Dr. Mistry:

No.

Donna Lee:

Yeah. Like the Geico commercials, they're singing the White Snake song. Yeah, that's hard living.

Dr. Mistry:

They're usually dentists who are probably running 17 miles a week and eating a plant-based diet, but also got a Harley Davidson. But the hard living really is, how are you looking at your health? And so, as a physician, when I see a 300 pound diabetic on seven blood pressure medicines, and he has impotence, I'm not surprised at all. But sometimes he's surprised.

Donna Lee:

Really?

Dr. Mistry:

And I'm like,"Hmm."

Donna Lee:

"Hmm. Are you surprised though, sir?"

Dr. Mistry:

I feel like, I feel like you should have known that something was going to happen with these continued lifestyle and health choices.

Donna Lee:

Right?

Dr. Mistry:

So when, when people come to me and they're like,"Well, Dr. Mistry, I can't believe the pills didn't work that you gave me." I try to tell them,"I didn't just tell you to take pills, right? You didn't leave here with that advice you left here with, I need you to get your bad cholesterol down under 120. I need you to get your, I need you to lose 20 pounds and I need you to get your blood sugar under control. That's what I told you. And here's some pills that might help you get some blood flow." That's what I said. And all you heard is the last part.

Donna Lee:

All you have is take these pills and you will be fine.

Dr. Mistry:

So if you're out there and you're looking for, because if you listen to this show, if the pills don't work for your erectile dysfunction, I don't have a lot of really, really great ways to fix your erectile dysfunction. Meaning I'll get you an erection, but...

Donna Lee:

Because you're so cute?

Dr. Mistry:

...you may not like what you have to do to get.

Donna Lee:

Because you're so pretty.

Dr. Mistry:

That's right. You may not like what you have to do. Surgery, injections, use of vacuum erection devices--I mean, I love doing these things to help men restore function, but if you're 40 years old and your erection is starting to soften, you need to come see us so we can tell you exactly what supplements to take, what dietary modifications to take, what type of exercises will help, you know, what are you looking to accomplish in your life?

Donna Lee:

Yeah, Michael.

Dr. Mistry:

Don't wait until, you're...No, his erectile dysfunction is named Donna.

Donna Lee:

But I'm so pretty.

Dr. Mistry:

You can't keep hitting it when it comes near you.

Donna Lee:

"No, no, sir. Take that away from me."

Dr. Mistry:

And so, the Arterosil, we use a lot of L- arginine for erectile dysfunction. When it comes to prostate cancer patients, our focus on in supplements is to really reduce inflammation. When it comes to weight loss and cholesterol, we really are concerned about blood sugar management and carbohydrate management. So that's where our supplement interests lie. If you want to have a more curated approach to your supplement line, if you want to understand preventative medicine, real health care. And that's what our goal is to do here. Many times patients come to us and testosterone's their gateway drug. Right?

Donna Lee:

Right. The gateway hormone.

Dr. Mistry:

But, but I mean, when you come here, you're not doing a gateway drug to other drugs, you're doing a gateway drug to better wellness and better health. And that's really what, what you should demand from your healthcare provider, whether it be with us or whoever we're going to. So if you have the means and have the motivation, you should certainly find someone that's more concerned about you living a long, healthy life than just providing you medications just to tick a box off a chart. So, Donna, how do people get ahold of us?
