Why Listen? In my journal practice, I write down what I call “heart taps”, which are the things that speak directly to my heart. Here are a few of the heart tap moments that I wrote down from this interview with MORGAN KLINE:

****HEART TAPS FROM THIS EPISODE****

  • Your mind goes where your body leads, and not the other way around. Regular movement and exercise are essential for mental and physical well-being.
  • To overcome habitual negative thoughts and behaviors, identify your belief system and make sure it aligns with your true self, not societal expectations. Avoid letting negative self-talk hold you back.
  • Just Show Up! Even on tough days, showing up is crucial even if you show up at 50%
  • Embrace curiosity by asking smart questions. When faced with uncertainty, don't hesitate to ask experts what questions you should be asking. This opens doors to new learning and understanding. Nobody knows it all.
  • Place value on community and connection. Surround yourself with positive, like-minded individuals who support your growth. This will not only help you in your fitness journey but also in other areas of life!

 Episode 65:

Host, Keri Wilt (Intro):

Hey friends, welcome to The Well=Tended Life podcast. What is a well-tended life? Well, let me start by telling you what it is not. A well-tended life is not a set it and forget it life, nor is it a perfect life. It is, though, a life that is worked on every day, in the sunshine and through the storms, And the truth is what worked in our life gardens last year may not work in the next.

That's why here at the Well Tinted Life podcast, we're interviewing people who have grown and bloomed true in a variety of seasons and who are willing to share their well tinted wisdom and weed whacking advice with us. Listen in.
(Intro ends)

Keri: Hello everyone. And welcome to the well intended life podcast. I'm your host, Keri Wilt, a speaker, writer, and heart cultivator who is on a mission to help you and me grow through any season.  As always, today's episode is inspired by a quote from my great grandmother's book, the secret garden.

And this one goes, he's in such good spirits that it makes him stronger. And I love this quote because it reminds us all that it takes working on both the inner and outer strength to become our best well tended selves. And I can't wait to learn more about this inner and outer work from our special guest today, Morgan Klein, who along with her husband has just published a new book that is based on their assertion that instead of the good stuff.

Spirit's being the lead element that it's actually the other way around. They believe that your mind goes for body leads and not the other way around.   I just can't wait to see what well tended wisdom she has to share with us today. Welcome Morgan. Thanks for coming on.

Morgan: Thanks so much for having me. I'm excited to be here. Talk more about the book, about myself and Burn Bootcamp.

Keri: ive people like the nutshell of who Morgan is? Cause I know you're not just; you're not just burn bootcamp, but you're a little bit more than that. So, give us, the 10 second tour.

Morgan: Okay. My name is Morgan Klein, and I am the co-founder of Burn Bootcamp, alongside my husband Devin, who is our visionary. So, I serve as the CEO. Him and I started this brand 12 years ago in a parking lot. We moved to Charlotte, North Carolina because of my job.

We both are originally from Battle Creek, Michigan. We're actually. high school sweethearts So We met in sixth grade when we were 12 years old became quick friends  then dated  we both took separate paths in college. He went to play baseball at Central. I went to get my food marketing degree at Western Michigan.

Then he was drafted our junior year of college to play minor league baseball for the San Francisco Giants.  I got a job with the Kellogg company. So, selling pop tarts cereal and eggos and all the things, which was really the plan A for me.

Um, where we grew up is where Kellogg's is headquartered. So that was just a dream come true to get that job out of college. And, he was in his plan A, which was college football. To make it to the big leagues, like life happens, he got called into an office one day and he was fired. He was released and that's where things took a turn for us.

In the moment it was scary cause he didn't have that plan B growing up. Baseball was his outlet. It was his escape from his background.  And so, you know, I had my job and my thing going on and he started doing some personal training. And again, I'm still like. I'm career woman. I'm climbing the corporate ladder. Here we go. I'll support you how I can.

Long story short my job moved us to Charlotte, North Carolina, and he said, I'm going to start my own company, Burn Bootcamp. And so, he really is found the founder of it, but I was there alongside from day one. And I'm incredibly proud of it.

And about 18 months after we started in that parking lot, I was able to forgo my corporate job and join forces with him. And we went from parking lot days to five brick and mortars here in the Charlotte area. And then we became a franchise. So now we are a franchise system. We have opened over 400 doors.

We're in 43 states.  And along the way, we've had three beautiful children. I have a daughter who's eight and then a son who's six and another son who is four. So they've grown up in our world of Burn Boot camp. And, um, like you said, we, we Just published a book actually Came out June 18th. So we are still riding that high of just getting a lot of our philosophies and strategies and the five pillars that really made burn boot camp the brand it is today.

And having that be applicable to anyone that picks up this book, whether they have access to a burn boot camp or a gym or anything like that, it's giving them those tools to holistically transform their life, not just through physical fitness. That would be my short bio.

Keri: I think you killed it. That was awesome. I, first of all, I have to shout out 'cause I just watched the show Cereal. Have you seen that yet? It's about the Kellogg's Pop-Tart War. Oh, okay. You have to see it. I think it's on Netflix. But it's a Seinfeld-like comedic version of the whole war to, to be the first pop-tart.

Anyways I actually used to work for Crayola. So, I I know what it's like to work for a brand like that and what an experience it is. And my gut says that prepared you for what you needed to do with burn bootcamp. Can you talk a little bit about that? What I think so many times people think that oh my gosh, I don't have the experience to do this next thing, but really probably chances are what you're doing right now has actually set you up for that next thing. So, tell me about that.

Morgan: Absolutely. I loved my job at Kellogg, and I was really grateful for it. I had great leaders, and I was given really great opportunities through my internship to my first job, to my second job and leaving it was very hard for me.  I never thought I would become an entrepreneur because that wasn't in my belief system.

My belief system was you go find a corporate job. It's safe. Get insurance and all the things.  It took a while for me to make that big decision. But I absolutely was prepared and set up so much better because I was given that experience through all of my jobs, really, just being a waitress in college, and then having to be a salesperson and walk into a grocery store and call on a manager who didn't want to talk to me about Pop Tarts and cereal.

You learn those people skills and you learn relationships and that helped me and prepared me to start my own business because this is a people business, right? Specially fitness and training. You are constantly working with different people and I've continued to have to level up my Ability to communicate really well with people and to handle different personalities and different work styles with my employees and my teams.

And I came into the business and was very operational. So Devin, I mentioned he is the visionary of the company. He wasn't always. The visionary, he had to be the CEO for 10 years before I stepped into that role.  What I was able to bring to the table was more of an integration and an operational mindset to his vision and his dreams.

And so we're a great duo. And I recommend anyone that's, going to start business. It's to have somebody that can respect your vision, but also pull you back a little bit when you need it and step and tap on those brakes, brakes a little bit.  That's what I've been able to provide for burn.

Just every experience that I've had, I think has taught me that there's no job out there that I can't do. I just need to work really hard, ask a lot of great questions and don't. Be embarrassed or scared that I don't have the experience because I've sat in rooms with people that have way more experience than me as CEOs or board members.

And, that used to intimidate me, but it doesn't anymore. I don't go in with pride and ego thinking that I have to be the smartest person in the room. I just ask really great questions and I represent the brand well, and then I surround myself with really incredibly smart people. I love that.

(Episode continues)

Keri:  And I love that asking really smart questions. My brother is so goodMy, my dad died in September. So, we like, we're confronted with all these like new things, right? Having to deal with bills and having to do with all this. And he, the question he always comes back to is he always asks people, what are the questions we're not asking?

Yeah. Like you were me and you were sitting in this position right here. So I think, sometimes we're like, I don't even know what to ask. Yeah. Ask what questions should I be asking? What questions do other people in this situation ask? Cause it's the only way you can learn.

Yeah. I think I love that question. Like when I'm talking with bankers or like people that are just in such different industries, they're like, do you have any questions? And I'm like,  f you were me what am I not asking you? Because no, what you don't know. And I think a lot of us do get caught up in that pride a little bit of I can't.

I can't show people that I don't know because then that will be seen as a sign of weakness. And I just don't believe that. So  I love it. Okay.  You said you own this company called Burn. Clearly it's a fitness thing. Give us the top level, like what is it? And lead us in the book in, in that way.

Moran: Yeah, absolutely. So burn bootcamp is a boutique fitness gym and our mission is to empower women and their families. And so when we started, we were All women back in the parking lot days, and then over time, we have evolved and innovated to include, women and their families, but we still focus primarily on serving the woman and more specifically the mother, because we've found that.

There's so many barriers already to putting yourself first when you are a caretaker or have children. And so how can we fill that gap for that population, that's putting themselves last and how can we teach them that actually no putting yourself first and giving yourself this time is the best thing you can do to be the best mother, to be the best wife, caretaker, friend, employee.

And so that's really our messaging is it's all about empowering women to Not just build confidence in the gym, but also let that transcend fitness and let that transcend into other areas of their life. And so something that's unique about burn butte camp versus some of our competition is we do offer complimentary child watch.

So that has been one of the biggest things that has helped our brand stand out because like I said,  Children are a big barrier to get to the gym. You feel guilty. And we have a great welcoming space that moms can come, drop their kids off and get a really great workout. So our fitness product is a 45 minute bootcamp but it combines strength and conditioning.

So different days call for different protocols. We focus three days on strength. We focus three days on conditioning. More cardio workout, athletic conditioning, stuff like that. And yeah, we have over 125, 000 members that men and women now. And so our makeup is about 96 percent women still, but we have grown that men male membership.

And what I love about that is it's women bringing their husbands, and the families that kind of grow up within burn. They get to see their parents working out together and they get to see the impact that has not just on a relationship, but then how they're going to grow up and view working out and view food as a good thing and not a bad thing and also see their moms putting themselves first, right?

Doing thing for themselves.

Keri: So many generations have grown up watching their moms sacrifice and not do those things for themselves. And I love that you're creating a whole new you're even creating a whole new generation of the kids that aren't even coming to bootcamp. The ones that are seeing their moms grab their bag to walk out the door and all of that.

Morgan: Yeah. And seeing how that, and they may not see that now, but just the mental release that working out can bring. And we talk a lot about that in the book, it's not just working out. It's not just the physical. It is also the mental. And that's actually the bigger challenge that a lot of us are facing.

That, We don't know quite how to tackle. And so we'll, we'll talk about that a little bit in our belief strategy, because what goes on in between your ears is the most important thing, right? You have your nourishment, you have your burn, which is you're moving your body, but how can you use those to make sure that you have that strong mental strength and mindset?

Keri: Yeah let's go ahead and talk about that. Like you said, so your book is based off of that kind of the five core strategies.

Morgan: So we have five core strategies and we call them pillars here at burn bootcamp. But then for the book, there are five strategies and they're burn, which is anchoring yourself in working out, whether that's just Whether that's burn bootcamp or anything, it's burning, right?

And then you have believe, which is your mindset. You have nourish, which is your nutrition. You have achieve, which is setting goals for yourself and really building a vision of who you want to be. And then last but not least is connect, which is another thing that's really set. Farm bootcamp apart is connection and community.

And so that is key, right? That's key for anything in life to have that connection with people that have like minded goals and that are positive and that can carry you through hard times and can be there for you as, an accountability buddy. And yeah, Connection is  getting harder and harder these days, right?

With technology. And so how can burn bootcamp bring community together and share with people why that is so important not to isolate, but to really connect. So those are our five. Oh my goodness. Okay. So I, before we started this interview, I was like, okay, I want to talk about belief because I 100 percent believe that believe, listen to me.

That, that is one of the biggest hurdles to getting women to, to really tend to their selves and to go do the work of themselves.  So let's talk about a couple of them. Like one of the ones you talk about is breaking negative patterns and in the garden, there's a quote. It says, if you keep doing it every day, regularly as soldiers go through the drill and we'll see what will happen and find out if the experiment succeeds.

And  I pulled that quote because what we do regularly, like patterns over and over. Sometimes, like we're not even conscious of them, especially negative ones. So talk to me about that. Yeah. I think it's like that physical, but also that mental of what are you saying to yourself over and over again?

So first it's about the belief system and then your actions are going to follow and your habits are going to follow. And yeah. We talk about really the mind body connection and what is the identity you keep telling yourself. And like you said, doing that inner work first. And I'll listen to people in our, we call them focus meetings.

It's those one on one opportunities for trainers to get in front of their members.  You hear things like everybody in my family's been overweight, or I've always been like this. I'm big boned or they did the belief system that they are carrying the identity that they are carrying is not really the truth.

So until you break that identity, then you really won't be able to move forward. Past and breakthrough to reach goals that you want and find true happiness. And I think the other thing that's really important for me to talk about when we talk about the belief system is  what identity are you telling yourself?

And is it the truth or is it what society has been telling you? You need to be. And I think women especially have had such a hard time breaking out of a box that we've been put in over the years through media now through social media. Yeah. Of you need to look like this health looks like this fitness looks like this, and it's hard.

It's a hard battle to fight because it's in front of us all the time. But, I've experienced this when I became a trainer 10 years ago, when I had an identity crisis, I was like, wait, I'm not a trainer because I don't have a six pack. And I don't have these like really toned shoulders and arms. I went on this whole.

Eight to 12 week, destruction of my body. Truly. It was under eating, overexercising, taking my diet pills, thinking that I needed to fit into this box. And  I had a moment where I'm like, no, this isn't my identity. This is not who I want to be. I don't want to be what they say I need to be because that's not authentic to who I am.

And so I want people that are listening to this to really ask themselves those questions of who am I actually trying to be and why? Why? And why? And do I love myself for that? Because you cannot expect others to love you until you find that love for yourself. And so the belief strategy again, is it's  What are you saying to yourself?

How are you speaking to yourself? So we talk about the reticular activate activating system of your beliefs are going to be then what your actions are. So again, when you can start there speak a language of winners, not losers, and we talk about, we have a list of winning language and losing language and positive and negative language.

And a lot of us are talking to ourselves in a negative way. And so therefore We're our habits are going to be negative. Our the way we go about our day because we're on an autopilot is going to not help us reach our goals. It's going to take us further away from our goals. We talked about that in the book.

We talk about just having that emotional six pack, right? That emotional intelligence. Intelligence six pack because it doesn't matter like we don't want to preach six pack in real life We want to preach that emotional intelligence. So that's self awareness. That's emotional regulation That's having empathy for other people.

That's learning how to communicate and have conflict resolution It's resilience and then it's gratitude. So those six things are what we talk about in the book under this strategy of When you can really dial all of that stuff in, you start to wake up excited about what's the next version of me and how do I get there?

Keri: Oh my gosh, it is so good.  Talk to me about internal resistance. What are those things that people are like coming up against?

Morgan: Yeah. I think it's number one, not feeling worthy of it. Not even feeling worthy that they get to have 45 minutes. To themselves, not worthy of loving their body, not worthy of wearing the shirt that they really want to wear.

I think it's really that it boiled down to that self belief of, Hey, I'm worth it. I'm worth reaching goals and being happy. And a lot of that has to do with who are you surrounding yourself with? Because if you're surrounding yourself with people that  aren't pushing themselves forward, you almost feel like you got to hold back too, because you don't want your shine to hit theirs.

So how are you getting around the right people that are making you feel that worthiness to go after it and to put the time in for yourself?

Keri: It's so good. There's a quote from the secret garden. It says she made herself stronger by fighting with the wind.  And I was like, it's about pushing through those internal resistance.

Someone, I don't know who it was that said it, but somebody said something about usually if you're not trying to do anything like important, like resistance doesn't come, but expect resistance when you, I'm sure when you start working out, when you start like doing things for the first time for yourself, like you should expect those resistance to come through and part of it.

Yeah. And when you can know that's part of it and you can almost welcome it because you get through that resistance because they're going to come like the wind is going to blow when you can get through it, it builds confidence and those reps of doing it over and over again, showing up even when it's hard, picking up the heavier weight that your trainer said, even though it's hard.

When you do it and you're done and you put the weight back down, it's oh, I can do this. And it builds that confidence that's, for us, it can start in the gym, but then that transcends to other areas of your life.

Morgan: One of the stories in the book, Cyhia was her name.

Really powerful. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was going through a divorce and also COVID had just hit. And that's a lot for somebody to deal with. And one of her tips was, even on the hard days, like just show up, even if it's at 50%, just shut. That was the one thing she's I just need to keep showing up even when I don't feel it.

And that is something that she said helped her get through  challenging times. And yeah, just show up, just keep going through it and don't fight the wind, just ride with it. Yeah. Yeah. Embrace it.

Keri: Oh my gosh. So good. And we've touched on this already, but adjusting our attitudes is something.

Crazy important. There's a quote in the Secret Garden. It says now it says: One of the new things people began to find out in the last century was that thoughts just mere thoughts are as powerful as electric batteries as good for one as sunlight is and it's bad for one as poison to less that thought or a bad one.

Get into your mind is as dangerous as letting scarlet fever germ get into your body if you let it stay there after it's got a hold. It may never get over it as long as you live. And. It's our attitudes, our thoughts, like the internal piece. It's so powerful.

Morgan: So powerful. And I think I was trying to find a quote in our book too, about how many thoughts we have, but I want to say it's somewhere around 30 to 50, 000 thoughts in a day, which seems crazy, but the majority of them will be negative unless you speak it, speak positivity and you surround yourself with positivity. It's like just especially thinking through scrolling on your Instagram, for an example, and how many times like you read something, it's that's a thought, that's a thought, that's a thought.

So you have to take a really good audit of What you're letting come in because once they're there, like it's hard for them to, they're not going to turn positive. They're going to stay negative. And then that's going to be your output. So there's been many a times where I have to start auditing who I'm following and what I'm seeing on my for you page and what I'm seeing on my scroll page, and because it's powerful once you start going down a trail of people believing like a victim mentality to you become that. And I I think that's a dangerous place to live because you don't, you can't see what's possible for you in that type of mindset. It's.  It's huge. And it's interesting because, I'll see people every once in a while on Facebook and they're like, I'm getting off of Facebook or whatever.

Social media, Instagram, any of them, because it's so negative. And I'm like it's not negative, you're whoever is at home. Listen to this. Your feed, your social media feed is feeding you what it believes you want to see. And that's because you are slowing down and you are reading and you are paying attention to the negative things when you switch that mindset and you start following things that are positive and you start reading things that are positive.

You're liking things, like you're out with them interacting with things that are positive, like when you're slow down to read the negative news and the horrible car crash and the whatever it is, it's going to keep feeding you that and it's it's similar to the whole, it's it's funny, you're talking about the reticular activating system, the RAS, I guess a friend of mine calls it  And I always think of the RAS as like our bodies, our minds Instagram, like algorithm, right?

So if you can train yourself to have those positive thoughts and, then you're going to, you're going to be seeking them and you're going to be seeking them in social media. You're going to seeking them out, out in the world. Yep. Absolutely. And that's only one component, right? Like I said,  surrounding yourself with, who are you having conversations with?

What are you letting them say in front of you? Are they gossiping about other people in front of you? You've got to set those boundaries. Otherwise you fall victim to it.

Keri: Okay. Before we get done with this book conversation, I think we need to go back because you do state that your mind goes where your body leads, not the other way around.

So  For someone who is I haven't had my body moving in a long time.  Like, how do you even start that process? Like, where do you sit? Suggest them to do?

Morgan: A couple of different things. So what's really cool about the book is we have 12 exclusive workouts in the book and this is all just body weight.

So it's just using your weight as muscles and then there's pictures of all the different exercises in there. And so you don't need technology. You don't need, you just need the book. And I think that's one area that can help people. And then we have an on demand platform that can then start to get you introduced to what type of workouts we have at burn bootcamp.

And then obviously if you're near a gym, we always welcome people to come in, no matter what their fitness levels are. A lot of people feel like they have to get in shape to get in shape. And I'm just here to tell you, if you're listening to that, like that is not the truth. Like we want to, we want you to walk in even if it's right from the couch, because we're going to have a modification for you.

And that's, what's unique about our protocol and our programming is we have a baseline workout, but then we always make sure that we have something that's a modification down and a modification up to meet you where you're at, to hit the fitness level that you're in. And that's why we take pride in our trainers at burn boot camp, because not only are they certified personal trainers, but they also go through a burn certification.

So they're going to learn how to do one on one style training, but in that group setting in that community, that really is going to help you push yourself. And but I know it can be scary. The heaviest weight that you're ever going to pick up is the door is the quote that I've heard. And that's very true.

That is the hardest thing. But once you've done it. Give it that, give it a week, and have those small steps towards it. We talk about in the achieve chapter and the achieve strategy, we really do talk about how to set that vision and that North stars, bigger goals, but then how do you actually work backwards from those?

How do you create opportunities to celebrate your small wins? Because if you don't do that, it can feel daunting. It can feel like you've got such a hill to climb. And so it's really about finding your community, finding your place. But then being intentional about how you set goals and celebrate that.

Cause that also signals to your brain, the exciting things. And it's going to motivate you to keep moving forward because that feeling is one that feels good.  Oh my gosh, it's so good. Clearly this book is written with the woman in mind. But what is the one thing like that you want people to do differently after they read your book?

I want them to take time to self reflect on their life. And give them a measuring stick of where they're at now, but then where they can be, because where you're at now doesn't ever have to be where you stay there's versions out there of us that are better and better, but it's going to take work.

And so my hope that when you read this book, it's gives you that, that armor. It gives you those tools. It's your superpower to say, Hey. How do I, where am I struggling right now in what area of my life am I struggling? And what are some things that I can do to put myself back on track? And this is not a book just about physical fitness.

This is everything else that we've talked about, you do see the word burn bootcamp and. This is how burn has been created to what it is today. And it's giving it all to you and, a little under 300 pages. It's also got 50 recipes in there that are under 10 minutes.

It gives you grocery guides. It gives you a top swap outs. So it really is that, like I said, that tool that you can put in your toolkit to say, okay, where am I today? And then where do I want to be and how do I get there? A

Keri: And I, it's interesting cause I think you said one of the biggest keywords, which is work the dirty four letter word that most people don't want to hear.

But living your best life, your best, tended life, your best Burn life, like it takes work. Yeah.  You have to believe that you are worthy of that. You're worthy of going up every single day to do the work of you. And it sounds like you all have stacked this book with awesome tools. For really the entire mind body connection piece.

I'm so thankful that you didn't just write a book about the fitness part.

Morgan: Yeah. So there's fitness everywhere. There's you know, there's so many, the pushups and squats and burpees, like they've been around forever. Diet books have been around forever. Yet we still are needing more, we're seeking more.

And so this to us is that, that full picture of. Of what it can mean to be healthy and to have that inner and outer strength. So thanks for letting me talk about it. And we're just excited to get it into new hands. And it's on, it's available on Amazon right now. So if you want to purchase it.

Keri: So good. Okay. Let's talk personal now. All right. Tell me besides like clearly fitness is one of your regular practices, right? What other regular practices do you have that help might help us to live our best well intended lives?

Morgan: So my time management and my calendar organization is something that.  Is Ben my lifeline on the, in the busy season of life.

And I'm in a busy season of life. I have been for a while. And so I do get a question a lot about like, how do you balance it all? How do you do the motherhood thing and the business thing and all the things. And this question for me, it's a very practical tip and it's one that everybody can do.

Like you don't need a sauna or a cold plunge. Cause that's also something I love to do, but that's not realistic for everybody.  Calendar management though. And so every weekend or usually on Sunday, I go through and my calendar is really my Bible for the week. And it's what I do. I have both personal and professional things on my calendar, and it allows me to feel really organized for the week ahead, and that's what helps my husband and I communicate really well.

And it just helps. The week go much better, which is something I think we're all seeking is just how do we build time for all the things that matter in our life? And if you're just flying by the seat of your pants, then you'd never really can look back and audit to say, where am I spending my time?

And so one of the reasons why I wanted to share this tip is because  Some of us out there think we need to do everything for everyone all the time. And I'm speaking to my older version of myself and you have to learn to say no to things. You have to learn to delegate things, even if you're not an entrepreneur with, team members can you delegate?

Home stuff that's taking your time that you'd rather be spending with your Children, and so I'm a big believer in that. I'm a big believer in saying yes to the things that only you can do and then say no to the things that are not serving your purpose that are not fulfilling you and.

And just having that discipline to only spend time on what matters. And that for me, like my calendar is really what guides me. So when you can have good time management skills, good calendar organization, I think it can really be a guiding light for you to just have a much smoother week, month. Order a year and then you can always look back and it's Hey, what am I spending my time on?

And where can I hack the system and buy some time back? Because unfortunately we can't buy time back and we all have the same 24 hours in a day. And, I have a lot of things and people that I need to serve. And so that's, what's worked best for me.  Those are great questions to even maybe put on the top of your calendar as you're filling out like, could this be, is this really mine to do, is this a yes, or is this a I'll do it if I have to questioning yourself before you even put it on the calendar is probably a great idea.

Keri: Oh my gosh, so good. Okay you just talked a little bit about the life season you're in, but give us a little view of your life season. And I always like to ask this of guests because I think like one of the number one ways to live a well-attended life is to understand the season that you're in, because it really informs your 'yes' and your 'nos'.

Like you are in a busy season like you are. You're  right now, as we're having this conversation, you just launched a book this week, which means a whole lot of things that were not on your plate. Even six weeks ago, eight weeks ago. So what does that look like for you right now?

Morgan: Yeah. I think that the season of my life is like I mentioned, I have three kids. So there's six, eight and four. And I want to start there when we think about season of life, because I'm sure you have so many mothers that are listening to your podcast. And I can just remember I've, I have moved up in that season.

But I remember being in like the last season. And I remember feeling just the. The depletion I'm just going to say I think that's a really great word, like it's the most fulfilling, but there's so much depletion in those early years and I had two kids under two and then two and a half, two and a half years, I had my third during a pandemic, like it was a lot.

And then, take, that's not even talking about the business side. And so I think for me, I had to say no to a lot other, a lot of other things in that season. And I had to give myself the grace and the patience and the, just the expectations needed to be different. The way I, Viewed my body and loved my body needed to also look different in that season of life and the appreciation I needed to have for all of these things in my life.

And I think when you're in the season,  if it's a hard one it feels like you're never going to get out. But now I'm sitting here with. Yeah. Eight, six and four, they are still young, but they don't need as much of me. Like they can go to the bathroom by themselves. They can swim by themselves.

I'm like, wow, independence. And now I'm able to look back at young moms and share that with them.  I'm getting ready to go into a season with motherhood where I'll have a teenage daughter, I'm pulling from my other fellow moms of okay, what do I need to remember during that season of life?

But it's fleeting. Like seasons to me have been fleeting in the grand scheme of things. And then I'll talk about my business seasons where really, unfortunately, while I was in that young.  Years of my children. Business was a little crazier, right? And I was needed in my business a lot.

And so that was the hardest for me to juggle and have that harmony. But I got through it like I worked through it and I took it day by day. And now I'm in a season work wise where. I've got a great team around me, a great leadership team. I've built a really great infrastructure. I've taken the time to build the foundation with our team headquarters that we have almost a hundred employees.

And so there's things that I can now trust other people to do that. I once was the only one that could do, but that means like I'm leveling up, and I'm putting ourselves in new opportunities and paving new paths for Burn Bootcamp. And it just looks different. But. I have more flexibility because I'm not needed in the day to day as much, but all that stuff took work and it took time and I just, I needed to get through it.

I needed to have patience and I needed to set the right expectations for myself.  Yeah it's a lot. And like you said, seasons change quickly. As even with what you do, somebody can, be in the middle of bootcamp and they break their legs and then that season has changed for them, right?

Keri: I think the way things look differently. And I think especially when it's a hard season, just reminding yourself, I'm always like, this is just a season. This is just a season. This is just a season. My husband. Owner restaurant and our Children were raised with us building our business.

And I always love to tell people who are entrepreneurs and are raising young kids at this point that my kids are awesome because of it. They can talk to anyone  they are so good. They know hard work in a way that I think a lot of kids don't. And in the time that I worried About being away from them.

I'm sitting right now on the edge and the edge of an empty nest. I just graduated my son who's 21 and a daughter who's 18. She just graduated from high school. So I am right on the edge of this and they were partially prepared to fly because of what I was building and what my husband was building and because they were a part of it and we allowed them in that piece.

Morgan: And So I thank you for sharing that because I think I need to hear that too. Yeah, that's, I want you to hear that because I remember those feelings of guilt and am I doing enough? And, balance is bs. It's not really a thing. It's just being there really present when you can be present.

And, but also just sharing, I mean our kids learned about life.  From those and even things that I didn't know they were learning, they were learning about, things that the staff were talking to them about, No. And I think I'm almost a living testimonial that too.

I had a mother that my father died at five when I was five years old. So she became a single mother overnight. He was in a car accident and she was a hairdresser. So That job doesn't give you benefits. Like she was 33 years old, they're there. You're not prepared for a tragedy like that.

So she had to work and she had to provide for my sister and I. And so there were long nights where I was at the babysitters or I was at grandma's for dinner. And. I never have, I do not have resentment for my mom one single bit because I watched her work hard. I watched her, do all the things that I needed and love me.

And I never forgot, I never think about what she wasn't at. It just, it's not something that has ever gone through my mind. So I try to remember that with my kids too. It's I'm teaching them those life skills. I'm teaching them what it looks like to work hard. I'm teaching them how to, be in a big crowd and talk to people and how to serve that's what I do.

I serve people and that's an important skill. And I don't know how to teach them that any other way by just showing them. And that's the messaging that I keep telling myself. Yeah. And they say kids are the lessons are caught, not taught. Yeah. Love that quote because I believe it.

100%. It's true, though, of the people around you, which I'm so thankful that you're y'all are encouraging the community side because it's the same thing. Everybody's every in that community is learning from each other as they show up.

LIFE TENDING JOURNAL AD BREAK:

And now it's time for my favorite part of the interview, because it's inspired by my life tending journal practice. But let me be clear, this is not your grandma's journal. Now, it's by far the most important tool in my own personal life gardening shed, and I want to gift you a free journaling template today. Today. So check out the link in the show notes or head over to the well attended life. com and download it and get started today.

(Episode Continues)

Keri: Okay, last one is it's one of my favorites. I'm a journal girl this is my everyday practice.

And one of the things I do is I always look back and look and spot from the day before the joy, goodness and growth that was there. It's a gratitude practice, but it's, it's a reminder for me and my heart that it's always there in the storms. It's there all the things. Talk to me about where are you spotting joy?

Like joy is usually just like top level makes you smile. Makes you giggle at the thing the, whatever it is.

Morgan: Yeah. I think for me, it's just it's summertime right now and my kids were creating really fun memories. We were just in Michigan back home and they're just bringing me a lot of joy because we have more flexibility in the mornings and the evenings.

And I'm just really getting to enjoy the kids right now. Oh my gosh. So good.

Keri: Okay. So goodness is really something you would write almost in a gratitude journal. It's the goodness for which you are grateful for. So what are you feeling grateful for these days?

Morgan: Yeah, I thought about this a lot this week with the book launch, and I would say the community that I have around me, and I'm really proud to be a part of it.

I'm very thankful for just the people that I have surrounded myself with and how the book launches. Even the brand has attracted the right people into my life. And I think it just moments like a book launch party where you're like, wow, these people like really care enough to spend their evenings with Devin and I and celebrate with our family.

Or share the book on their social media, and text me and say, we're proud of you. So I think just I'm really thankful for my community and my people.

Keri: I love it. I love it. And that's cultivated too, right? That's a, I think that's a big myth. People think, oh, you just, like movies, it's oh, friends are just supposed to show up and that's not true.

It's, it takes work to cultivate a community. And you all have clearly done that. By setting good examples. All right, last one is growth. Clearly you are in a season of growth, but this is like life lessons. What are you learning? Where are you feeling the most growth these days?

Morgan: Yeah. One thing I'm challenging myself a lot right now is what expectations am I putting on other people that I shouldn't be? I think we can fall into the trap of wanting other people to show up a certain way for you, but that's just not the reality. And whether that's your spouse, whether that's your best friend, your sister, your, Employee usually when I find myself in discontent with somebody, it's because I set in place an expectation on them that they didn't even, agree to, no, no idea that you even get it right.

They have no idea. And I think there's so many layers to that conversation, but I think just at the surface, it's me taking a moment to have a little bit more emotional intelligence to when I do react or feel frustrated with somebody, um, is this me or is this them?

Keri: Yeah. Yeah. And I feel I don't know about you, but nine times out of 10, it's me. Oh my gosh, Morgan, thank you so much for coming on today. This was so great and I'm so excited about your book and all the things you're doing and the yummy time you're going to get with your kids this summer.

Tell people where they can find you, follow you, buy the book again and worry if you're driving or working out or whatever you're doing, we'll have it in the show notes and all the things, but tell them top level again,

Morgan: The book is on Amazon target online, Barnes and Noble online, pretty much anywhere you can buy online, you can find it, or you can go to BurnBootcamp.com and through there, you can navigate not just the book information, but also the fitness. Information and even the business information, or you can follow me on Instagram, @Morgan.A.Kline.
