Well, hi there, and welcome back to another episode of the All Around Growth Podcast. My name is Rob Kaiser, and I am your host. This is a show that provides insight and tools to build the life and homestead of your dreams. And this is episode number 309 of the show. Today is March 21st, 2022. And while I wanted to do another spring-oriented show with the vernal equinox occurring yesterday, we had a lot of spring-friendly content from the old farmer's almanac last week. So if you missed it, I would encourage you to check out those shows. But this morning I had a bit of a thought about how we could provide some further balance to the show instead of have a lot of old farmer's almanac heavy content. So basically, I think what I'm going to try to do is moving forward, have Mondays be a motivational Monday show and choose from one of the three devotionals that you guys are already familiar with. Tuesday is going to be a trending, easy for me to say, a trending Twitter Tuesday. Wednesday, I haven't really decided. Kind of a wild card show. Thursday, we will do an old farmer's almond deck update or check-in. And Friday, to close out the week, maybe an audience feedback show, some feedback from you guys or something highlighting content that you are creating. So let me know what you think you might want to hear on Friday. So this is basically how we're going to experiment with the show this spring, and it will provide some additional diversity to the content, to the show. And that's what I like because, you know, I mean, look, guys, if you want an echo chamber, this isn't the place for that. The only constant in my life is change. And quite frankly, I like it that way. So let's get to it. Let's dive into Motivational Monday. And today's reading comes from The Rudder of the Day. You guys may be familiar with this book. For those of you who are not, we want to be very careful how we start our mornings. You are planting the seeds for what that day will hold. If you get up late, grab a cup of coffee and a Twinkie, rush to work, fuming at the idiots in traffic, and drop down exhausted at your desk at 8-10, you have set the tone for your day. Everything will seem like pressure, and your best efforts will be greatly diluted. The importance of planting wholesome, life-enriching thoughts in our minds in that first hour of the day cannot be overemphasized. I never read the paper first thing in the morning. No matter how important it may seem to know the news. The news is filled with rape, murder, pestilence, and heartache. And that is not the input I want in my brain. Later in the day I can scan the news for anything related to my areas of interest and quickly sort through what I need. But I carefully protect that first hour of the day, making sure that all input is positive, clean, pure, creative, and inspirational. Guys, I've had other shows in the past about my own morning routine. I would encourage you to check those out. And if I can remember, I will link to some of those in the show notes and maybe consider doing an updated show in the future about my routine. But the topic of today's show is the merry-go-round of my life. That could be your professional life, it could be your financial life, it could be your physical life, it could be your spiritual life. But the question we ask ourselves is: do you ever feel like your life is moving forward? Or are you just going around in circles? And we read, Dan, the merry-go-round of my professional life has left me no farther than a few steps from where I got on, and with a weak stomach. Many times, a career path starts because of circumstances rather than priorities. Family expectations, chance occurrences, a friendly teacher, or seeking money can lead us down an unfulfilling career path. It's tough to make good choices at 18 that will be meaningful at 45. Just recently, I saw a 44-year-old client who opened with the comment, I'm tired of living my life based on the decisions made by an 18-year-old. Quote, the man who does things makes mistakes, but he never makes the biggest mistake of all. Doing nothing. Close quote. Benjamin Franklin. If your work life is not providing a sense of meaning, purpose, and fulfillment, draw a line in the sand. Decide what the ideal day would look like. How would you spend your time? What skills you would use. Money is ultimately never enough compensation for investing one's time and energy. There must be a sense of meaning and accomplishment. And yet a surprising thing frequently happens on the way to fulfillment and worthy contribution. Rather than living to live on beans and rice, there is often the release of a financial flood. A former pastor, who is now a well-known artist, relates that his income is eight to ten times what it was previously. And this while finding authenticity in his God-given uniqueness. The frustrated corporate executive, who is now a web content and book writer, tells me that she has reduced her workweek hours by two-thirds, but has increased her income three times over. Scott Adams of Dilbert fame escaped the cubicle and became a multimillionaire with his doodling. Quote, the rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold a man's foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher. Close quote. Life is too short for merry-go-round sameness. But rather than allowing that to be a random choice, think through the desired direction first, then take that step, expecting the inertia to give you a jumpstart to a new level of success. Believe that a life of purpose and meaning is your best source of financial success as well. I hope it's no secret that it's easier to make money doing something you love than doing something you hate. Success is not an accident. I guess before we ask ourselves two questions that will give us some direction for today, some mental clarity for the day, let's take a quote from the Bible. We're gonna read from chapter 3 from Proverbs verse 5 to 6. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. And the direction for today are questions are what is an area of your life where you are on a merry-go-round? And how can you make that step off? Important question, guys. What area of your life are you on a merry-go-round? Alright, and if you're not sure how to identify what area of your life, I'm gonna again plug the 2022 Goal Setting Workbook by Dan Miller, who's also the author of this book. It is no coincidence that I am referencing both here because both have had a profound impact on my life. I've learned to delineate different areas of my life in order to find balance in my life. And those areas, in the order that I'm working them, in the order that I feel as though they are important, and I this is the way that they are lined out in the 2022 goal setting workbook, are financial, physical, personal development, family, spiritual, social, and career. Now, if you feel like you are on a merry-go-round in one of those aspects of your life, and you're also not sure how you can make that step off, the 2022 goal setting workbook will provide a solid foundation and framework for you to begin identifying how. become stagnant. What happens to water when it becomes stagnant? Do you want to drink it? No. You want to drink from the babbling brook. You want to drink from the spring that comes from the aquifer that's always flowing, always running. You never want to drink from the stagnant water. Stagnant is not regenerative is not sustaining. Stagnation leads to decay, leads to death. We read that life is too short for merry-go-round sameness. If you take that image, right, the image of the merry-go-round, you know that if you step off a moving merry-go-round, you will have some momentum that will project you straight out in some direction. But rather than allowing that to be a random choice, think through the desired direction first. Then take that step, expecting the inertia to give you a jump start to a new level of success. Believe that a life of purpose and meaning is your best source of financial success as well. It is no secret that it's easier to make money doing something you love than doing something you hate. Success is not an accident. Now that last line is in large part why I think I've reached a level of success in life. Now, granted, it's not necessarily financial, but throughout my career, I have reached a certain level of success because I've in large part followed the advice of my father, which is do what you love, do it well, and the money will come. And indeed it has. I'm not rich by any means, and nor have I acquired much based on the life choices that I've made to date, but I am changing that, and it's never too late to change. Financial Peace University is a great way to begin engaging in financial change, setting goals, and getting back on track. That was what I did several years ago. And it was the financial element and getting back on track and relieving some of the stress in that area of my life that allowed me to focus on other areas of my life, ultimately leading to the work of Dan Miller, the 2022 goal setting workbook, finding balance in life. And it all started with finance. Right? All of this is reprogramming how we think. Alright, I really want you to think about that last, and I'll read it one more time. And I and for for you guys who are interested, this is on page 108 and 109 of the book, The Rudder of the Day. The title of the today's reading is called The Merry-go-Round of My Professional Life. The title of today's show, episode 309 of the All-Around Growth Podcast, is going to be the Merry-go-Round of My Blank Life. Because I think we can get into this merry-go-round dynamic in any aspect or any facet of our lives, financial, physical, personal development, family, spiritual, social, career. We can just have this cyclical mediocrity, right? That merry-go-round sameness. Another important part of the reading this morning was the quote by Thomas Huxley, who said the rung of a ladder was never meant to rest upon, but only to hold a man's foot long enough to enable him to put the other somewhat higher. Guys, if you are not working towards, climbing towards something. Again, goals. Or not not not having the success that we want to have. It's not it's no wonder why we're not making the progress that we want to make. We've become lazy with our goals. We've never set them. In some capacities, sure, we're familiar with goals. We've set them professionally, or maybe in certain areas we've set some physical goals, you know, we've achieved something, but only to cycle back and repeat that same process over and over again. No. We need to experience drastic life change. We need to experience habit change on a big level, across the board. Financial, physical, personal development, family, spiritual, social, career. We need to change our lives. You know, we're not happy. And that's okay. But if we're not happy, then we don't do anything about it. What are we doing? You know, I had a conversation with someone recently who quite frankly, making excuses. And I said, they don't want it bad enough. They're not sick and tired of being sick and tired. That's what it took for me. I had to get sick and tired of being sick and tired. Quite frankly, I had to get damn sick and become damn tired. Luckily, we're still here. There's a lot of people who've been sick and tired that pushed it and pushed it and pushed it, and they're not. You are. So take advantage of the time that you have here and the time that you have left. And if not for yourself, do it for your family.
