I think welcome back to another episode of the other house. Thursday 27 2022. And this is episode number 452 of a show where we go create life together a show where you join me with my family on our small farm and homestead where we talk about the five W's and how as we grow all around the family businesses, our lives, our own homesteads. Everything. Everything. And today is an interesting episode because we're gonna talk about Tennessee. And if Tennessee is really the place to be. Now, before we do any of that, I want to let you know that this episode has actually already been recorded. That's right. I've already recorded the episode, but because the introduction of the live stream this morning went a little bit less than smoothly. And I tried to dovetail the recording of the podcast in the same way that I do the show. Everything failed. And so what I did was again shout out to Scraman, who received many shout outs during the show for the hosting capabilities and all of this with regard to streaming. He helped me extract the audio file from StreamYard so that I could download it and then upload it into the podcast player for today's show. Now, moving forward, I realized that this is going to be much easier to do, so I may perform live streams more frequently in the future. Um because it's kind of fun, we'll see how this plays into the whole thing with podcasts. So today's episode is going to be a little choppy. Hopefully, uh the introduction into the show and the explanation of why it is choppy makes it make sense. And um I guess without further ado, I will introduce you to the episode which was streamed earlier today, and I'll catch up with you towards the end. Enjoy working on getting things up and going. This is episode number four hundred and fifty-two of a show that provides um, well, a show where we co-create life together, a show where you join me with my family on our small farm and homestead as we grow all around, a show where we generally talk about the five W's and how as we grow our family businesses and our various family operations here on at York Meadow Farm. And today we are actually going to be talking about Tennessee and uh is Tennessee the place to be? But before we do so, I would just want to take a moment to mention the sponsor of today's show. The sponsor of today's show is York Meadow Farm. And if you are interested in healthy fermented foods and natural bath and body products, you know, York Meadow Farm is your Huckleberry. Um, we make small batch uh products of both fermented foods and bath and body products. So check out YorkMeadowFarm.com. And if you are a listener of the All Around Growth podcast, just check out or enter discount code all around growth at checkout for some nice savings. And uh, you know, I'll just go ahead. You you'll save 25% on your order by doing that. Um, I also want to take a moment to mention, you'll see if you're watching this, Food Forest Farms. Um, I need to get in here, but uh Brian over at Food Forest Farms is helping me out with uh supporting the show through the streaming element of this, which is new. So if you were listening to this in audio form on podcast, this is going to sound kind of choppy as I learn how to navigate doing multiple things at once. But for those of you who are watching this last minute moving forward, the streaming will be a little bit more planned out, the streaming will be a little bit more um fluid and uh hopefully things will run a little bit more smoothly. So, what exactly is it that we're going to be? Oh, yeah. So there we go. All right. I'm also getting into the habit of a routine here with the show, and what I mean by that is doing the housekeeping before we get into the topic, right? Teasing the topic a little bit at first. Like I said, is Tennessee really the place to be? We're gonna talk about that, but before we do that, we're gonna talk about the sponsor and then a couple of shout outs. Okay, so like and I and I'm working on getting in this new groove with the show, so bear with me as I work towards achieving a greater level of professionalism here. But yeah, York Meadow Farm is the sponsor of the show, and in terms of who I'd like to give a shout out to, I'd like to give a shout-out to Food Forest Farms for supporting the show where you can get micro batch specialty coffee. And just check out foodforestfarms.com, check learn about the upcoming Squatch Fest in June of 2023, Summer Solstice Celebration. And I'd also like to give a shout out to um you know Nicole Sauce and John Willis uh yesterday for bringing me on to talk uh live about a number of things. We um we talked about homesteading, small business operations, uh challenges in life, a number of things, and and that conversation yesterday got my gears grinding about Tennessee. Well, because they both live in Tennessee, and it got my gears grinding about why so many people are moving to Tennessee and not just Tennessee, Texas everywhere, right? So that's what we're gonna talk about today. Is Tennessee really the place to be? You know I'm gonna say just to to to to avoid any conflict, the the whole deal with this with this topic is is Tennessee really the place to be? And a case for Ohio is I wanted to put something out there that was somewhat provocative, you know, and again, had I planned this a little bit better, so on and so forth, we could have had some engaging dialogue on a live broadcast, a live podcast. But I think what moving forward, what I what I probably ought to do is just stick with the podcast in podcast form because I'm recording it as I normally would, and then do some additional live streaming um elsewhere to have that engagement with the audience in that in in this way to to try and do both at the same time. It's a little bit uh yeah, it's a little bit it's a little bit confusing. So all right, enough of this, enough of this blah blah blah, you know what what the hell is he talking about? This dude's all over the map, right? All right, um, yeah. This dude's all over the map. So is Tennessee the place to be? Depends. Depends, you know why you moving, where are you moving from? Like, what's your objective in moving? What are your goals? Like, what the hell are you doing with your life in the first place, man? These are the things you gotta ask yourself, and these are the things that I was asking myself a long time ago. These are things that came up in the conversation yesterday with Nicole and John. And you know, first of all, before I talk about anything else, I I want to say thank you to both of them for the opportunity to get on and have a great conversation. Appreciate it, guys. Um, if you guys aren't familiar with Nicole Sauce or John Willis, uh you should be. If I was a good steward of the streaming game here, I would have linked to this uh discussion that we had yesterday on both of their channels in the show notes, but I didn't do that. And by the time I thought of that to go into StreamYard, it turns out that I was unable to make a last-minute edit, so I'll have to go in and do that after the fact, or actually, what I can do right now, since I am streaming, is I'll just go ahead and drop a comment in there, and um so I've commented everywhere with links to both uh basically the uh the the the promo uh uh information that was provided to me by Nicole. So you know you can watch that on either of those two channels, Nicole's channel at Living Free in Tennessee or John Willis's channel at um uh cripes special operations equipment. Let me at least get that right. Yeah, special operations equipment, so e. SOE tactical. All right, and um you know, speaking of speaking of John, uh go grab a t-shirt from his online store because his shirts are great, and they're just fantastic in every way. So check check them out. Um, I will link to his store in the show notes, but uh special operations equipment, uh SOE tactical, uh I believe is the website, but I don't know, guys, and I'm not gonna pull this up right now. I'm going to continue talking because that is what we are here to do. We are here to talk and we are here to share, you know, my thoughts on what is really behind the rise of people on the move. And I think that people are on the move because people are interested in changing their life. People are interested in changing their life because they're not satisfied with where they currently are in life. They're not satisfied with life on life's terms. They're not satisfied with, you know, whatever it is that they've been doing for the amount of time that they've been doing it. And more often than not, the people that are moving are people that have put together an action plan and a strategy to proceed with actively writing the next chapter of their life, which is something that I started doing quite some time ago. And my journey, if you will, brought me back to Ohio. Now, if I were in the situation that I was in, uh you know, way back when, but but the situation was different, and I've talked about this with my family and such that and uh and other people, that if I didn't have the family that I had here and the opportunity here in Ohio to build and grow and develop a homestead, where would I be doing this? Because 10 years ago, I was living in California. Uh yeah, 10 years ago, on this day, I was in California. North County San Diego living in San Marcos, running those trails, just living the life, you know, hanging out in Encinitas on the beaches in Carlsbad. Um scrambling's out there. Hey, morning. Thanks for tuning in. Early for you, brother. Um, but yeah, by the time I got turned on and tuned in to this whole idea of homesteading, sustainability, prepping, all of that, my life and my family was such that that it it it it it was it was sensible for me to move back to Ohio. If it wasn't for that, based on everything that's going on in the scene, if you will, I think Tennessee's a damn good option. A damn good option. There's a lot of people in the community that are already there. There's a lot of people in the community that are making a transition there, and there's a lot of reasons uh to be there. Have I barefoot trail running in California for sure, man? Um not so much here, although there are some trails in Medina that I need to explore uh locally. But anyways, um while I don't have experience living in Tennessee directly, I have a lot of experience living in North Carolina and uh outside of Ohio, North Carolina is this the one state where I've lived the longest amount of time, and the one residence where I've lived for the longest period of time, and considering me with my history and the the kind of ramblings that I've engaged in, that says something. I don't know, I've lived in ten different states across the country, and uh for all anyways, yeah. Um if I if if I was still but and that's why I was in California, because like if you have the opportunity to live in Colorado or California or I don't know, uh Texas or Iowa or Massachusetts or I don't know, um Oklahoma, anywhere really, you know, like why not do that? So that's that that that was it. And and until I realized that um I wanted something more than than that than that than that drifting lifestyle, although there's something to be said for the drifting nomadic lifestyle if you do it the right way. And I think someone who's actively doing it the right way is Brian from the Lots Project. And um check that out for some inspiration and motivation on how to homestead on the move, right? Thelotsproject.com. Check out his content, follow him everywhere. He's inspiring me to get out there and do some additional live streaming like this, explore new platforms like TikTok and uh you know, so you know, homesteading doesn't necessitate you being uh fixed in a singular, you know, location. And um, even though certain states, you know, like Tennessee are have have laws and legislation regarding cannabis or whatever, you know, you just gotta make your choices regarding what's important to you and what's not. And um personally in all my travels, I'd I've I guess like I you know, regarding cannabis, um I live in a state where it's legal now. I've not taken, I'm sorry, medically legal now, it's recreationally not legal or whatever. Um I guess it's decriminalized up to a certain quantity in the state of Ohio, but um even though I'm eligible for a medical license in this state, I just have not gone out of my way to explore getting one. The reason being is I most certainly did when I was in California, and I thought it was I thought it was cool to explore some, you know, dispensaries and get into that. But then there was this weird thing where all the legal shops became illegal for a while, and then everything was like, you know, you'd you'd order it, and there was this like delivery service for donation and whatever. And but ultimately at the end of the day, by the time I ended up settling in San Diego, when it came time to procure my cannabis. I was just getting it from my roommate's dad who was growing it in his backyard. And I I always no matter where I was resorted to and preferred the um alternative economies, if you will, with regard to uh products of uh questionable and uh ever-changing legality. I just I just have no interest in engaging in the in the system uh with regard to substances like that so that really has no uh no uh no no impact or bearing on my decision making uh uh process with regard to where uh where I live and and and and you know why I I choose to do what I do so you know back to the topic of the show today is Tennessee really the place to be well I think if you were like in a situation like me where you were living in California uh yeah man Tennessee is in a supremely viable option in my early twenties like I said I'm kind of going back in my early twenties I was uh mid-20s late twenties I guess it was lived in western North Carolina for four years and I would I would likely explore that area again western North Carolina uh even certain parts of South Carolina like way north South Carolina um there's a lot of there's a lot of nice country down there there's a lot of nice seasonal change and even in western north uh Carolina and eastern Tennessee you'll still get a heck of a lot of seasonal change and uh even even even a touch of snow which is always nice so I think there's a lot to be said for Tennessee and you know Tennessee's quite a wide state um I looked at a a couple photos of Tennessee are I don't know where they are now but you know Tennessee borders with North Carolina on the east side and I guess on the west side uh I don't know maybe that's the Mississippi River over there um but there's a lot of diversity in Tennessee and you know you've you you've got plenty of options with regard to rural urban suburban but I presume if you're leaving a place like California you're not looking to get into the Nashville areas and the urban type areas but um anyways so yeah you know the whole the whole the whole idea of the topic for today's show is Tennessee really the case to be then uh you know it was intended to be provocative to get some people to listen and with the uh bumbling around and confusion of the um oh you know what I'm sitting here thinking I'm recording the episode for the show on my phone with my lapel mic here but uh you know what when I put my phone into my pocket I pause the recording so one thing that we'll be lacking in today's episode is the out uh the outro music if you will and it looks like I've got yeah it looks like I've got the uh defin I definitely have the recording online and the audio file is safe for sure but this means I've got some learning to do and how to extract this because one of the things that I wanted to do anyways um Brian is is uh and now that I've created a YouTube channel um I've got all the audio files from past episodes initially I started doing this I did this with the most popular episode episode number 234 I put that into a video format and uploaded that as the second video after the introduction video but um what what I uh what I opted to or or what I was thinking about doing was taking all of those audio files and then putting those up on YouTube now uh this and and or I'm sorry I I was going to do that but one of the other things I was going to do was before I actually started this podcast in September of 2020 I had done the 10 episode mini series the podcast experiment in 2019 September October November 2019 and you know that was cool that got me thinking that that podcasting is is cool I like I didn't want to start a project and have an unfinished project that just was open out there I've had plenty of those didn't need another one so when I first started podcasting it was like this is my project I'm going to do a 10 episode project I'm gonna have an introductory episode a conclusion episode and then a a series of eight episodes on wellness and that that was that was the the the beginning of the all around growth podcast in 2019 that was you know that was a good experience and once I uh you know kind of decided that that was something that I wanted to do I started the the show in September of 2020. Now in the interim I probably did uh I I will I'll I'll do that I'll I'll give you a shout thank you um as soon as I stopped that podcast in 2019 I did like a video blog commute series I have like a hundred and fifty uh episodes of old truck commutes on video that I want to pull the audio from and maybe one thing I'm considering doing is uh like making a Patreon account or a subscriber account or something where you can access all of the um the old commute series because there's there's a lot that I talked about on there that was just kind of weird and uh I was experimenting with different formats and then different all kinds of different things. But nevertheless it's just been an endless stream of content creation and this is the current iteration of that. So uh yeah there's that is something that I've tabled for quite some time and extracting the audio file from today's episode will be exactly the catalyst that is necessary and required to uh get me to be able to do that with all of the past content out there on the commute series. So anyways with that I think we are going to conclude uh the episode here today I appreciate those of you who tuned in appreciate the support um with the show and the streaming scrambling check out foodforestfarms.com for everything that's going on there learn more about the Squatch Fest that's coming up in June of 2023 the solstice celebration from what I know at this point there's a lot going into this event the plans are uh are underway to make this something worthwhile so check out foodforestfarms.com to learn more about that and everything else so guys have a great day today I appreciate you uh watching I appreciate you listening and check out the show notes for uh links to everything that was talked about today links to the discussion that I had with John and Nicole yesterday links to all around growth on all social media platforms and links to anything and everything that was discussed in the show today so all right guys have a wonderful day this is Rob Kaiser and thank you okay guys well there you have it that was the episode that was live streamed today and after a little bit of learning I was able to extract the audio file from the live streaming platform that I am using on behalf of Brian over at Food Forest Farms again thank you very much please do check out everything that he is doing over there and everything that everyone else is doing in the show notes.
