It's often times challenging for me to read this book...but it forces me to think about my own life and what it is that I'm doing - or more specifically, NOT doing.
Join me as I share a story about an old dog lying on a nail - and how this story is often times a great analogy for us in our own lives.

Notes:
"Henry Ward Beecher said, 'The first hour is the rudder of the day - the Golden Hour.' Since I have discovered that principle, I have seen its truth confirmed in many ways." - Dan Miller
Well, hello there, and good morning, good afternoon, or good evening, wherever you are, whatever the case may be. Welcome back to another episode of the All Around Growth Podcast. My name is Rob Kaiser and I am your host. Today is Friday, December 17th, 2021. This is episode number 249 of the show. And in a continuation of the theme over the past couple of days, we're gonna read from the rudder of the day this morning, much like we do on many other days. But today, to carry over the theme of feeling discombobulated. I will get into that once we start driving, but before we do, let's pull out the book. Let's read from it. And again, this is from the rudder of the day. As we read from the back cover, the first 60 minutes of each day will set the stage for what that day will hold. Be very careful how you start your day. In those first few minutes, you're planting the seeds for your effectiveness, influence, health, and spiritual vitality for that day. If you get up late, grab a cup of coffee and a Twinkie, rush to work fighting the idiots in traffic, and drop down exhausted at your desk ten minutes late, you have just set the tone for everything that will happen that day. So with this book, with the show, oftentimes what I try to do is change the tone for that day if my morning hasn't really started out the way that I would have liked it to. And that may or may not be the case today. We'll see how my perspective gets reframed after I read this and share this with you today. The title of today's reading is Get Off the Nail Today. Are you tolerating a familiar pain that is prompting you toward a new and unrealized opportunity? I heard a story from my friend Bob about an old dog lying on the front porch. A neighbor approached the porch and could hear the dog softly moaning. He asked his friend why the dog was whimpering, and the owner said, Well, he's lying on a nail. Predictably the man said, Well, why doesn't he move? To which the owner replied, I guess it doesn't hurt quite that much yet. About a year after sharing this story in my weekly newsletter, I had an attorney call me. He said he was that old dog, very much in pain about his daily activities, but the pain was still almost tolerable. The image was so indelibly etched in his mind that he started every day identifying with that dog. We discussed his situation, his clear sense that he was off track and that the necessity for dramatic change in his life. He was seeing his family, his health, and his peace being ended or being eroded by his commitment to keeping things the same. Yet six months later, I am still waiting for him to begin the process of introspection and exploration of new options. Quote, if you don't have a vision for the future, then your vision is threatened to be a repeat of the past. Close quote.

SPEAKER_00R. Bernard. The comfort of familiarity can be so alluring, even if it's not the best. I see countless people droning through their mundane lives, hanging on to their comfortable misery and blocking the thrill of new and unrealized but available success. I guess a lot of people are like that old dog. They moan and groan about their situation but don't do anything. How bad does the pain have to be before you get up and do something else? In the workplace today there are incredible opportunities. If you are in a negative environment, one that causes you pain and anguish, maybe it's time to take a fresh look at yourself, define where you want to be, and develop a clear plan of action for getting there. Quote, he who has learning without imagination has feet but no wings. Close quote. Stanley Goldstein. For tips on how to take advantage of new opportunities, check out other information at 48days.com. And you can certainly do that, 48days.com guys, but I will link to some information and resources on where to learn more about the 48 Days Eagles community that I oftentimes speak about. Where I learned about this book, as a matter of fact. Now before we get into the couple questions that are going to give us some direction for today, let's take a look at the Bible from Psalm 59, chapter 1, verses 14 through 16. Deliver me from my enemies, my God. Protect me from those who rise up against me. They return at evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. They scavenge for food. They growl if they are not satisfied. But I will sing of your strength and joyfully proclaim your faithful love in the morning. For you have been a stronghold for me, a refuge in my day of trouble. Alright, guys, here are the couple questions that are gonna give us some direction for today. Some talking points, if you will. What is that familiar but annoying nail that's sticking you daily? What could you do to get up and move? Well, a lot of times, as I've said in the past, these this book in particular, this rudder of the day, it's oftentimes challenging for me to read because it makes me think about my own life and my own circumstances and what it is that I'm doing. Or in the case of the old dog, what it is that I'm not doing. There were there were a number of things that stood out to me as I read this this morning headed down the driveway. And the reason I pulled this this morning is because I got into a lot of work last night. Um I am I serve as the treasurer for the church of which I am a member, and that in and of itself has been somewhat intimidating because um a little over 20 years ago I went through a bankruptcy. Ten years ago, I was back in debt, much like the way I got into debt leading up to the bankruptcy in the first place, and I still was like a bankruptcy wasn't enough to give me the opportunity to learn. I had to go back into debt yet again. Almost to the same point where I was at with my first bankruptcy. And eventually I realized that something had to change. So I changed. We read as I get here to this stop sign, there was something that stood out to me the most. Guys, I'm gonna tell you how I did. And I'm not gonna go into the detail of why I'm in misery, right? We all it's it's almost irrelevant, the details of my life. And I don't know who listens to this, and I certainly don't want to throw anybody under the bus because that's that's just not in good form. Um but there are there are there are instances in my life, and I'm sure that there are instances in yours, perhaps with your family, your career, your social life or lack thereof, your financial status, your physical health. Whatever the case may be, there are things contributing to your life that make it a little less positive of an environment than it could be, right? There are things in your life that cause you pain and anguish. And chances are, if you're anything like me, those things that have caused you pain and anguish have caused you pain and anguish for quite some time. And we also read about that comfort of familiarity. That's something that I talk about a lot. But what are we gonna do about it? What are we going to do about it? Now it wasn't until I began participating in the 48 Days Eagles community where I learned that I am in charge of my own life. You know, we hear a lot of things from a lot of people, a lot of content creators who like to hype up this motivational shit, right? You see it online, you may work with some of them too. Post all the stuff to their profiles on social media talking about team building and authenticity. You know it's authentic horse shit, right? So what do you do? What do you do? What do you do to get out of the negative environment that you find yourself in? You know, we spend so much time dreaming about things we don't have because well oftentimes because we're miserable in our current situation, our current environment. And that's not a bad thing. Dreams are a great thing. Once we stop dreaming, we die. If you're not dreaming, there's something seriously wrong. It's one thing to dream. It's another thing to plan. But ultimately, things really start to materialize when we act. But the world is overwhelming with everybody creating content, everybody. I mean, anybody's a content creator. I used to joke. We used to joke in the industry many years ago that anybody with a pickup truck and a trailer could be a landscaper. And it's oftentimes how landscapers got a bad rap, you know, because you didn't need much to to do it. Excuse me. There's a lot of information out there on how to you know improve your situation, how to create that six-figure income in twelve months or less. All you gotta do is drink black coffee and take cold showers and listen to Jocko Willink and Wim Hof. Right? All that's good. But it's not a replacement at all for doing the work. What the hell am I talking about? What is the work? Well, it all goes back to this idea of taking a fresh look at yourself, defining where you want to be, and developing a clear plan of action for getting there. I mean, in the past I've talked about Tim Ferris and his past year review, something that he wrote in 2017 leading into 2018, I believe, and I picked it up either at that point or the year after. I've been doing that ever since. I may not even do it this year. I mean I might, but I don't have the the vacation time that I used to have. Normally I'd bank some vacation time and between Christmas and New Year's, I would just take that week off. We used to get it paid off, but that changed. That was real nice when we got that paid off, but you know. It's kind of a weird dynamic. We we don't have it paid off. But the salaried some salaried people the business is closed, so the salaried people will I I don't know, it's it's strange. It's I I I digress. Back to this plan. Back to this plan of action for getting there. Getting where? The life of your dreams, guys. The homestead of your dreams, guys. Baby steps. So a link to this too in the show notes. The 2022 goal setting workbook. Something simple where we take a look at our lives. Physical. I'm sorry. That's where I'm at now. Financial. First of all, we get that under control. Physical, personal development, family, spiritual, social, and career. Guys, we gotta start, we gotta do it in that order. That is the plan of action. Now you'll see, at least, and this is my experience with this. I've begun working through this workbook in the year 2021. Leading up to that year, I'd spent several years integrating Financial Peace University into my life to focus on my finances because I knew that the way that I was living was not sustainable, let alone regenerative. I'm so into the concept and ideologies of permaculture, yet I'm living in debt unsustainably, spending money I don't have, buying things I don't need. It's literally the antithesis of permaculture, the antithesis of regenerative anything, the antithesis of sustainability. So after a few years of reprogramming my life in that way, implementing a plan of action outlined in Financial Peace University, I thought that it became an appropriate time to engage in the 48 days community that I often speak of. And that is exactly what I did. I've moved forward with that throughout the year. Towards the end of the year, November 1st, I began assembling my goals for 2022. Two weeks, got that done. Let it process, let it simmer, and here we are, just a couple weeks before the new year begins. I've got my goals outlined. I'm gonna spend some time on that this weekend. But once you once once we get our finances out of the way, and once we are on a track, and once we are executing upon that clear plan of action as outlined in uh Financial Peace University, then we're in a much better position to clearly identify our goals and what we want in life and those other six aspects of life. And only then can we actually begin to execute upon them and move forward towards the reality that we've dreamed of, dreamed of because we've got a clear plan of action in place. And to summarize, in that 2022 goal setting workbook, we look at three-year goals, we further break it down into one-year goals, and then we look at actionable items we can get into and do today, right here, right now. So, guys, check that out. It's helped me a lot. It is a valuable tool and resource that I've gleaned from the 48 Days Eagles community. And unlike the Eagles community, which is a membership option, this workbook, this 2022 goal setting workbook, is not. It is completely free. So check that out in the show notes, download it, and utilize the tools that are available to you at no cost to begin changing your life today. You have nothing to lose and the whole world to gain. And as you do this, guys, I would also encourage you to check out and share your progress in doing so with us in the telegram group at t.me slash allaround growth. You can find us on your internet browser, or if you've got the telegram messenger app on your phone, just search the groups for all around growth. This is Rob Kaiser. Thank you.
