Attitude is Everything V2
W. Clement Stone was famous for saying, "There is little difference between successful people and unsuccessful people. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative."
Rex defines attitude as a habit of thought. The habitual way we think or talk to ourselves forms our attitudes, which drive our behaviors, which determines our results.
People with a good attitude look for ways to win or succeed. They take personal responsibility. They believe if it's to be, it's up to me. They build people up rather than tear them down. They help people grow and be all that they can be.
When you have a positive mental attitude, you look for opportunities in every challenge. You focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses. You see the good in people --- especially in yourself.
Watch this video to learn the 8 steps in an "Attitude Tune-up."
If we stand together, we'll never fall.
SPEAKER_00Well, hi there and welcome back to another episode of the All Around Growth Podcast. My name is Rob Kaiser and I am your host. This is a show that provides insight and tools to build the life and homestead of your dreams. And today is Friday, June 3rd, 2022. And the topic of today's show is personal development. Now, this is the first show dedicated to personal development in the current context of the show. And for those of you who may not be aware, the show is currently rotating through seven topics. And these seven topics represent seven key areas in our lives that we need to work on equally in order to achieve a balanced life. Now those seven topics are financial, physical, personal development, family, spiritual, social, and career. Now in addition to these topics, we will also have episodes just related to life and the homestead from time to time. And now for example, like what we did this week was, well, today's Friday, so we've got personal development. And yesterday we covered a physical topic with a show titled Intermittent Fasting 101. Wednesday we covered the June newsletter from York Meadow Farm, which was a homestead show covering the well, the June newsletter from the homestead here at York Meadow Farm, where we did a recap of everything that occurred in May and outlined what's coming up in June. And then Tuesday we covered a financial topic with a show titled Getting Credit Cards Under Control. And on Monday, we had a special Memorial Day episode where we kicked off this new show rotation. Alright, so now that you're up to speed with where we're at with the show, let's talk personal development. Alright, so where do we even begin? Um at this point, right, as of June 2022, I've been involved in the world of personal development for 10 years. It's kind of strange for me to think that and say that, but that's that's reality. It this whole involvement in the world of personal development became official for lack of a better term in around 2009-2010, when my life in the corporate world exposed me to a gentleman named Rex House. And his company is called Improving Performance and Results Incorporated, and I'll link to a video in the show notes, something that was recently shared with the Telegram group as a teaser, and the description of the video reads as follows. W. Clement Stone was famous for saying there is little difference between successful people and unsuccessful people. The little difference is attitude. The big difference is whether it is positive or negative. Now Rexhouse defines attitude as a habit of thought, but the habitual way we think or talk to ourselves forms our attitudes, which drive our behaviors, which determines our results. You see the good in people, especially in yourself. And he encourages us to watch this video to learn the eight steps in an attitude tune-up. So this guy's was my first experience. This gentleman, under the uh guidance and counsel of a man named Ray Hannibeck, when I worked for the Davy Tree Expert Company in a division called Davy Resource Group, is where I first got exposed to this man portraying a message just like that. It set the tone in terms of how I was going to approach the next decade and beyond in my life, and basically everything that brings me to this day in this show. Now, as I got to thinking about how to approach this show, I realized that I'm I'm a little short on time. Got a market tomorrow, and there's a big event on the square as well. It should be a big day at the farmers market. We've got to get a very early start. We need to be on the road by 7 a.m., which means it's by 6 a.m. we'll be loading up the truck. And uh that's in 10 hours, so I've still got a few things to do tonight. Get this show uploaded and out there and wrap begin wrapping up the evening. Hopefully, I can squeak in a few minutes of playing tunes as well. And if I want to do all that, I need to get going. I mean, it's uh it's kind of weird, even though I am not employed in the traditional sense that I have been for the last eight seasons. You know, these days of working full-time with dad in the kitchen and at the farmer's market, along with my own current personal development plan of working through the book titled 48 Days to the Work and Life You Love by Dan Miller. It's really got my time stretched thin. So what I figured we would do is to mix it up a little bit, we're gonna go back in time. We're gonna take a trip down memory lane together, reflecting on this more than a decade of my own experience within the world of personal development, and you'll see what I learned in the corporate world and how that served as a solid foundation to build upon with everything else that I'm about to share with you. Now, there's going to be a lot of information discussed in this episode, and much of it will be verbal. Little of it is in the show notes, so if personal development is your thing, get ready to take notes. No, seriously, there's not going to be too many show notes to accompany this episode today, but if this is your thing, seriously take notes, pause the show, grab a notebook, do whatever, set up your podcast player. If you use Overcast, you can send notes like emails to yourself at a dedicated time frame, and that's always helpful. So, you know, if I'm saying something right now and you wanted to note this at seven minutes and 55 seconds, in the episode, you could just share that link at the current time. Just a helpful hint for reference. If you listen to a lot of podcasts like I do and you want to maintain current uh notes on things when you're in the field or away from a notebook or don't have anything to write on. So, anyways, any other questions or anything, you are always welcome to email me at allaroundgrowth at gmail.com, or even better, join us in the telegram group at t.me slash all aroundgrowth, both of which are linked to in the show notes. So, what I'm going to do here is pull up all my notes in Evernote tagged personal development. And it looks like there are 309 notes since I began using Evernote in May 2010, 2012 rather, just over 10 years ago today. So here we go. A little trip down memory lane so that I can share with you the most notable encounters through my experiences with personal development over the last 10 years or so. Now let's enter the time machine. Alright, so if we go way back when I see a lot of notes that were tagged with personal development, a lot of career-oriented things. Things from it looks like uh national seminars training, which is something that was acquired by Skillpath, okay? And you can learn more about what this is at skillpath.com. And this was something that I was doing way back in the day, and at that time they were offering seminars on how to handle conflict, uh, emotional intelligence seminars, managing multiple projects and priorities, improving your management skills, um, all sorts of things like that. And I would attend these things because it seemed like the appropriate thing to do, because at that time my uh my my goals and objectives were to grow my career, and as a matter of fact, I I see notes in here about a breakup with my girlfriend and how I was getting involved in the um how due to life on life's terms, I decided to stop investing in employee stock options, but continued investing in the 401k plan only. Um, you know, there were also some things about performance pam talents uh and um creating a personal development plan on my star.mystar12.com. That was also something that I remember doing a lot of. There are some notes in here as we move forward into 2013 when I started taking notes of guided meditations from Gaium TV, and I've mentioned this before with yoga videos and different kinds of things that you can watch and stream about wellness. This was something that I've I was watching and participating in 10 years ago, uh at least online in this way, and with DVDs and then with VHS tapes previous to that, a long time ago. So I believe a big component of personal development is the physical aspect of things, the mental aspect of things, and being sure that you know you are doing whatever you can to engage in that balanced life. And at that time, 10 years ago, I wasn't really sure how to tie it all together, but I was making notes of everything because I knew that there was a way somehow. Perhaps this is the way. There's masterclasses by Neil Donald Walsh on Guy Am TV too. Lots of different things. Now, there it 2013 is when my first TSP notes about personal development started showing up, and this was a business plan, right? And basically at that time, I was going to write a proposal. Uh, this is this is actually from Five Minutes with Jack, uh, a business podcast on a business plan. So, you know, Jack Spearco from the survival podcast has a lot of resources out there on um you know everything, like all sorts of things. So, you know, Jack Spearco.com. I don't know what uh how he's got all of this stuff housed now, but you know, for personal development, uh Jack Spearco is also a wonderful resource. Um, as we move into 2013, you know, more stuff from the Survival Podcast, more stuff from um here's an interesting one, a worldwide labyrinth locator. I know this kind of goes in the realm of spiritual, but I again, like I said, there's things to be said for these meditative walks in the labyrinth, which you can find uh at uh labyrinthlocator.com. Around the same time I got turned on to John C. Maxwell and began looking at the John C. Maxwell certification program, which I've never done, but I believe John Maxwell makes good content. There's also more homesteading content, more content from permis, because this is when I really started doing deep dives into homesteading, permaculture, the survival podcast, trying to learn more about what it is that I'm doing now, and that was 10 years ago. So, guys, if you're thinking about what you want in your life, think 10 years ahead, and then break that down into five-year plans and three-year plans. The three-year plan becomes manageable, becomes manageable into one-year plans, one-year plans become manageable into one-month plans, and then those monthly plans become manageable into bite-sized pieces, into weekly plans and daily plans. Alright, so as we continue moving forward in this time machine that we're in, there's dominating thoughts about homesteading, permaculture, homesteading, permaculture, moving back to Ohio. This is around the time when I'm getting my way back here. Early 2014, I start getting turned on to Michael Hyatt and Platform University. Michael Hyatt is a great person that you can look into if personal development is something on your you know frame of reference. Um, as I continue to scroll, uh more notes on uh nutrition, right? And notes on Henry David Thoreau and Transcendentalism. This is all what's in my mind in terms of personal development. More notes on John C. Maxwell, um the moon planting guide from the permaculture resource institute, notes on sourdough starter, you know, all kinds of things, things on beekeeping. Again, you can see where I'm at with personal development. Personal development involves my future thinking, my forward thinking ideas of where I want to be. Now in 2015, I'm back to looking at the Gallup Strengths Center, right? And what I'm talking about is Gallup Strength Center.com, which allows you to look into what Gallup's strength solutions are to be more engaged, more productive, and happier. It is, you know, more than 50 years of research allows you to take an assessment, take a test to help you discover what you do best. Things like this are helpful. Personality tests are helpful. Started reading articles from success.com. Getting turned on to people like Jim Rohn with tips for setting powerful goals, and again reading more and more and more about permaculture in 2014, 15 and how that relates to personal development. More information from Michael Hyatt. I was very into Michael Hyatt during the years of 2015, Michael Hyatt and the Survival Podcast. That was kind of where I was at. As we move into 2016, you know, more information from Michael Hyatt, more permaculture stuff. I'm trying to do more getting into and and and actually giving courses on introduction to permaculture so I can learn more. Um reading Hunter S. Thompson's surprisingly sage advice on um well doesn't even matter what that was. Lots of in at this time I'm I'm I'm I'm also exploring different relationship dynamics, and quite frankly, I'm dipping my toes into microdosing, and these are just some of the things that I'm I'm exploring in life. I'm exploring different ways of operating as a human, and at the same time, I'm also starting to learn about the gut microbiota and how that has the ability to mediate uh effects of people who have epilepsy, right? And um at this point in time I'm paying a lot of attention to my health and what I need to do to get healthier. This is 2017. I'd just passed Burnout 2.0. Reading more and becoming more familiar with Tim Ferris as well. And as we move into 2018, I realize that I can do his past year review. I've done episodes about this in the past. As I continue growing through my career, and and you know, for a couple of years, I my personal development took a back seat because I went first and foremost down the financial road of Financial Peace University, went gonzo on that 2017-2018, and in all honesty, the notes from personal development, there's a quite a bit of a lull during 2018-2019, and then as I continue to make progress with my financial goals, I get back into exploring personal development, and I'm doing more things on personality tests, Myers-Briggs tests, reading things from Marie Kondo, like the life-changing magic of tidying up the Japanese art of decluttering and organizing, uh, you know, trying to just rethink how I'm doing life. And reading again through the survival podcast, covering or coming across people like Gary Collins, who's writing books like The Simple Life, um, a guide to decluttering your life. Lots of you see some common threads here. Like we went from personal development and growth and career to getting my life in order and living a balanced life, and then collecting resources as I begin this podcast, the first iteration of this podcast in late 2019, learning about wellness. And um, this is actually a uh a great website on learning about what the different aspects of wellness are and this. This was the very first iteration of the podcast that is not available at this time, but will be down the road for subscribers or some sort of membership program. We'll see where this goes. But I did eight dedicated episodes on one on each of the following topics: emotional wellness, environmental wellness, financial wellness, intellectual wellness, occupational wellness, physical wellness, social wellness, and spiritual wellness. Now, mind you, this is around October, November, December of 2019. And so about two and a half years ago, I'm starting to get a good feel for this need for balance in life, and I'm realizing that this is it. So I start with a 10 podcast series on wellness called the wellness series, and that was the first iteration of the All Around Growth Podcast, Podcast 1.0. I did the 10, and long story short, I let the podcast go to return to it one year later with the first episode as you know it in September of 2020. Now, as we get into 2020, I'm still talking about the past year review, you know, reading different things about the power of thought and really starting to take a look at my career, where I'm at, talking with my employer about you know the future, what I do there, things of that nature, trying to get an idea of you know where I'm going and where I'm headed with regard to my career. This is all part of the personal development. This is all part of what's involved in these notes, tagged personal development here in Evernote. And this is around the time early 2020, I'm making notes of books like Seven Thoughts to Live Your Life: a guide to the happy, peaceful, and meaningful life. Uh, books like this, um links to you know quartz.com or something with free online courses you can take from university, universities worldwide, qz.com, free online courses. Again, notes on microdosing and things like that. Um want to talk about these things? We can talk about them in the podcast or in the uh yeah, the podcast group chat, t.me slash allaround growth. Moving into late December 2020. I'm getting into supplements, learning more about nutrition, right? Learning more about my my my path towards personal growth and development, personal development has gone from getting right, working with a financial coach in conjunction with Financial Peace University, to firing my financial coach, to working with a health coach, to firing my health coach, to working with a different health coach, to really getting on top of my game physically, mentally, and it all came with and through and kind of came full circle with functional nutrition, focusing on the four pillars of health, nutrition, stress, sleep, and movement, the two key areas being on nutrition and sleep. So, guys, you want to talk about personal development, focus on nutrition and sleep, focus on your finances, let the rest all come together, and listen to this episode again for all kinds of links, and not to mention, guys, there are a few things I left out. You know, 10 years ago as I was exposed to to some work by Mises, and recently I made another note, one of the last ones here in personal development about George Orwell, politics in the English language. And I think this is all very important to keep in mind as we go through this growth and development. And ultimately, where we're at today with these seven topics of financial, physical, personal development, family, spiritual, social, and career, these seven topics come to us via Dan Miller and 48 Days to the Work You Love, and specifically the 2022 goal setting workbook, which I will link to in the show notes. You can download this workbook for free. There's no, yeah, you need to enter your email address, alright? But no cost associated with the download of the workbook. It is an awesome 15-page comprehensive template for setting goals in each of these seven areas of your life, and it was so moving to me that I decided to utilize these seven topics as a framework for the all-around growth podcast moving forward. So there you have it, guys. That is where we are at with personal development as of early June 2022 on the All Around Growth Podcast. So I have a question for you.
