Ep. 377 - The Founders of York Meadow Farm

Episode 377

In today's episode, Rob interviews the founders of the homestead where he lives.  While we've only lived out here together for four years together, the history of the land dates back to December 2005 - when Robert J Kaiser, Jr. and Denise Kaiser first purchased the land.

There is discussion about challenges of building a homestead while owning land and not living there, even if your land is located in the same city or county where you reside.  We also talk about the challenges of building a farmers' market based business and adapting to change.

Learn how they supplemented their first market season with products when the gardens were barely productive.  Dad began baking breads and Mom began making soaps to supplement the produce being grown, and the seeds of self-sufficiency were first planted at that time.

Dad speaks about his enjoyment of the market experience and taking great pride and joy in selling products that he made with his own hands and Mom speaks briefly about her joy in educating the customer about the products as well.

Over 10 years of experience at local farmers' markets, you will learn how they adapted and adjusted to products being made and sold here on the homestead - and how that relates to getting older and aging along with continued growth and development of the farm.

We also have some discussion about how some gastrointestinal issues that Mom experienced helped Dad firm up his transition from baking bread to making sauerkraut and other ferments in addition to the pickles he had begun making a few seasons prior for the farmers market.

Learn how we made the transition into natural ferments here on the farm and how that grew into what we're doing today with all the fermented foods we are doing today...

...and how the "seeds of self-sufficiency" were planted decades ago with Backwoods Home Magazine, and how that resurfaced with everything we are learning about permaculture and regenerative agriculture.

Dad and Mom are very hopeful about the future of the land here at York Meadow Farm - because the potential of the land is great.  Over the past 15 years, all the work that is done here is beginning to dovetail with ideas of self-sufficiency as we begin to interact with our community in ways that facilitate a self-sufficient life and providing true freedom for our family.  While we don't know what the ultimate end will be...we will continue to grow.

Change and adaptation is key when you're actively building the life and homestead of your dreams.  That's allowed us to get to the point where we are with the current homestead AND business operations and the continual evolution will ensure future success as well.
