Sometimes as appetite, status, or the mirror and the screen.

The answer of the hymn is clear:

No other altar.
No other flame.
No other master.
No other name.

At its heart, No Other Altar recognises that worship is never neutral. Whatever a man bows before will eventually shape him. Whatever a family serves will eventually rule the household. Whatever a nation honours will eventually claim its children.
