Episode Description
Mary and Joseph have lost Jesus.
For three days they search Jerusalem for their twelve-year-old son, until at last they find Him sitting among the teachers in the Temple.
Mary’s words are restrained, but behind them lies a parent’s terror:
“Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.”
And then Jesus answers:
“Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?”
In this first edition of The Midweek Message, Rev. Victor Robert Farrell opens Luke 2:41–52 and asks us to hear something beneath this familiar story.
Jerusalem.
A Son lost.
A mother seeking Him sorrowing.
The purposes of His Father.
Three days.
And a finding beyond expectation.
Mary could not yet see Golgotha. She could not know what Simeon’s promised sword would eventually mean. But perhaps, in this strange and painful moment, her face was turned toward the Cross for the first time.
There are moments in our own lives when we hear something in the distance: the crack of something approaching, the chill of a shadow across our path, the smell of something foul upon the wind.
We lose someone.
We lose hope.
We lose work.
Something precious is hidden from us, removed from us, or taken from us.
And we do not possess the next verse.
Mary didn’t either.
Yet the Christian Gospel declares that Friday never has the final word.
There is always a third day.

Luke 2:41–52 (KJV)
