THE MADNESS OF DYLAN LLEWELLYN

Approaching the Voice of the Dragon

In this episode of Inside the Ballad Dodecet, we meet Dylan Llewellyn, the damaged, alcoholic, visionary central character of the Welsh novel in The Ballad Dodecet™.

His name is deliberate. Dylan comes from Dylan Thomas, whose Under Milk Wood gives him the poet’s Wales. Llewellyn reaches back through Shakespeare’s Captain Fluellen in Henry V to the Welsh name Llywelyn, giving him the warrior’s Wales. Dylan therefore stands somewhere between poetry and battle, vision and damage, memory and madness. 

Once, Dylan belonged to a mysterious team. Much of that history is missing from his memory, although fragments remain: concrete rooms, containment systems, engineered spaces, procedures his body seems to remember even when his mind does not. On Carn Ingli — the Mount of Angels — those memories begin breaking through as Dylan encounters six strange points in the landscape and the disturbing realization that whatever he is sensing may be far older than the modern systems surrounding it.  

Dylan’s great gift—and perhaps his great illness—is pattern recognition. Years out of ordinary employment have given him time to build an enormous private archive of government reports, astronomical data, military developments, emergency exercises, maps, geological surveys and old witness material. His question is simple:

What are they preparing for? 

His investigation leads through planetary-defense exercises, Event 201, COVID-era population management, Space Force, DART, global observation systems and ultimately to 99942 Apophis, which will pass extraordinarily close to Earth on Friday, April 13, 2029. Dylan does not necessarily believe Apophis will strike Earth. His question is stranger:

What if the passing itself is the event?

And, increasingly:

What does the serpent-star unlock?  

Dylan sends his conclusions to Tad Rex, asking him to preserve them and, if necessary, broadcast them. Meanwhile, another signal is emerging from Wales:

Voice of the Dragon — Llais y Ddraig.

Above lies Apophis. Below lie hidden waters. Behind Dylan are missing years. Ahead stands a mountain whose silence has already begun to answer.

Perhaps Dylan Llewellyn is mad.

That does not necessarily mean he is wrong.

The Dragon has a voice.
