Redeeming Love Bible Broadcast

The Goodness of God (LIVE)

Pastor Phil Duddy Season 6 Episode 2

Send us a text

Desperate circumstances have a way of driving us straight to Jesus. In Mark 5, we meet Jairus – a synagogue leader whose beloved 12-year-old daughter lies dying. His position, knowledge, and resources prove worthless against death's approach, so he does the unthinkable: he throws himself at Jesus' feet in total surrender.

As Jesus agrees to help, the crowd presses in from all sides. Suddenly, everything stops. A woman with a 12-year blood condition has touched Jesus' garment and been instantly healed. While this interruption might seem cruel considering Jairus' urgency, it serves a profound purpose. Before Jairus faces the devastating news that his daughter has died, he witnesses firsthand Jesus' power over incurable conditions.

When messengers arrive with the worst news a parent could hear, Jesus immediately counters: "Don't be afraid, only believe." Upon reaching the house, professional mourners create chaos with their wailing. Jesus declares the girl is merely sleeping, not dead – and is met with scornful laughter. After removing the skeptics, Jesus takes the girl by the hand and speaks seven world-changing words: "Little girl, I say to you, arise."

This story transcends its historical context to speak directly to our spiritual condition. Many of us are walking in spiritual death – separated from God and manifesting symptoms like pride, despair, hatred, or addiction. The noise of competing voices drowns out the simple truth: Jesus offers resurrection power to dead souls. Just as He counted the parents' faith sufficient for their daughter's physical resurrection, He extends His hand to us now.

Jesus' invitation remains open: "Don't be afraid, only believe." Contact us at gbtministries.com to share your story or request prayer as you begin your journey from spiritual death to new life in Christ.

Speaker 1:

And we're going to be in Mark, chapter 5, this evening, and we're going to start in verse 21. And I want you to keep a simple thing in mind as we walk through this account it's the goodness of God that leadeth you to repentance. It's the goodness of God that leads you to turn from yourself and from the world and from your circumstances, to turn to him and to hear what he has to say and to receive what he has to give. And, my friend, I hope you're going to see by the end of tonight that this is an account, it's not just a story. And I want you to see yourself in this. And we're going to walk through this very, very slowly. We're going to walk through this from the perspective of a desperate father. And let's start in verse 21. Let's read a few verses.

Speaker 1:

And when Jesus was passed over again by ship to the other side, much people gathered unto him and he was nigh unto the sea. And behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, jairus by name, and when he saw him, he fell at his feet and besought him greatly, saying my little daughter lies at the point of death. And my friends, see this from Jairus' perspective. He's got a little daughter and she's 12 years old and this is his little daughter. This is a beloved daughter. That word little that's very, very affectionate. This is a beloved daughter and she's on her deathbed.

Speaker 1:

And he hears of they regarded him as a teacher. They hear of Jesus and Jairus. His knowledge isn't complete of who Jesus is and what Jesus is about. He's regarded him as a teacher, maybe implicitly believes he's sent from God, but can't deny that. He's heard that Jesus has done some things. He's heard that Jesus has healed people. He's heard that Jesus has cast out devils. Jesus is just coming from across the sea and the big focus there was these two demoniacs and Jesus set them free. Jesus has fed people, Jesus has ministered to people and word has reached Jairus and Jairus looks at his little daughter and Jairus gets up and goes Amen.

Speaker 1:

He goes and sees the crowd and he hears the crowd. Maybe even before he sees it there's this great crowd. That must be where he is. So he walks and walks and he presses and he jostles. You could forgive him if he pushed. You could forgive him if he shoved. He had to get to Jesus Because no one else could do anything for his daughter.

Speaker 1:

If she wasn't getting better, she'd get worse the deathbed of his daughter. So he pushes and he pushes and he pushes, and the noise, the noise, the noise washing over him. This noise and noise and voice and voice, and the press of people, the press of a crowd that's moving in on a central point. He pushes and he shoves and all of a sudden he breaks through, he throws himself down. My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come, lay thy hands on her that she may be healed and she shall live.

Speaker 1:

His knowledge wasn't perfect, live. His knowledge wasn't perfect, but he obviously believed that Jesus could do something. Now he's asking him if he would do something. And Jesus went with him. Hey, they get up and Jesus we don't know exactly what Jesus said, but I imagine he said something, but he went with him. And this crowd is I want you to get a sense of the noise of a sort of a rolling crowd and they're all pressing, they're pressing and they're pressing.

Speaker 1:

And Jairus looks around and he sees some young men and they're trying to keep them back. He may or may not know that those are his disciples. And then they're thronging and they're pressing him and this is like a load, if you've ever hauled anything and you put something heavy in the back of a truck and you see the suspension go down. They're pressing Jesus and then all of a sudden and maybe he sees her, maybe he doesn't but all of a sudden Jesus stops and he stops right in his tracks. Another person had broken through. All of a sudden, jesus just stops everything and he raises up his voice. He had to raise it loud. Who touched my clothes? He said, who touched my clothes? And all of a sudden, jairus, he's there watching this and this woman comes forward. He can tell that she's scared. She's scared.

Speaker 1:

And maybe he knew this woman because this woman had a condition, an issue of blood, and she was constantly unclean, constantly unclean. And if anyone had compassion on her, it was the type of compassion that you have where you don't know what to do for the person. You just don't know what to do for them. You can't do anything. You've seen other people try and fail. You've watched this woman spend everything she had over a decade, 12 years, the very same year that Jairus' daughter had been born. For 12 years this woman had had this issue and maybe it came on small at first and it got greater and greater and greater, but no one could do anything for her. No, she was a certain woman. She was here for Jairus and she's here for you tonight.

Speaker 1:

Because Jairus, with all of his worry, with all of his concern, with all of the Maybe he was frustrated as well, with all the emotion and the thoughts and the desperation that would drive a ruler of the synagogue. Some people say he labored in the Word there and others say he was basically a deacon. But he had a position in this synagogue, whether he labored in the Word, whether he took care of the physical needs. He had a position and he had run to Jesus With all of the physical needs. He had a position and he had run to Jesus with all of the frustration and anxiety and worry and concern and all of the love, the real, passionate love, he had for his daughter.

Speaker 1:

And then all of a sudden, jesus stops and this woman comes forward. She touched him. She did the unthinkable and she had to touch a whole bunch of other people to jostle and push through this crowd. This was unthinkable for a synagogue man. She touched a rabbi. Was the rabbi now unclean man? She touched a rabbi. Was the rabbi now unclean? Were all these people now unclean the thoughts that must have raced through his head? And the thoughts that raced through her head. She was scared.

Speaker 1:

The Bible says she feared the woman fearing and trembling in verse 33, fearing and trembling, but knowing what was done in her, she was terrified. She did the unthinkable. She pushed, shoved, ran to Jesus. But she knew that something was done. She knew it. She came and she fell down before him. She told him all the truth. I love that. Told him all the truth.

Speaker 1:

Oh, how long were they there? Was it 30 seconds? Was it a few minutes? What a woman poured out her testimony. And Jairus heard this. And Jairus heard what Jesus said Daughter, thy faith has made thee whole. Hallelujah, go in peace and be whole of thy plague. And what is going through Jairus' head? Who is this man, who is this rabbi, who is this young teacher To say these things? And yet, I can't deny it, he did it right in front of me For this woman, and while he yet spake. Oh, my friend, the Lord knew what was coming and the Lord knew what Jairus needed. This was an encouragement for Jairus, an encouragement for you. There came from the ruler of the synagogue's house, certain, which said my daughter's dead. My daughter is dead. Why troublest thou the master any further? She's gone On from Jairus' point of view, whatever hope I was welling up in him.

Speaker 1:

Scripture records that it was fear now, but even in that moment, I want you to look at where you are in life right now. Are you desperate for Jesus? Do you have a desperate human need that's pushing you to Jesus? Do you have a desperate human need that caused you to hear this message tonight? Jesus had a definite word for Jairus, in the midst of the worst news a father could ever hear. I want you to hear this tonight.

Speaker 1:

Jesus had a clear word for this man. In the middle of the tumult, in the middle of the press, in the middle of the noise, in the middle of the fear, in the middle of the frustration, in the middle of the anxiety, jesus had a clear word for this man and he said be not afraid, stop fearing, only believe. Stop fearing and believe, oh, my friend, not only for Jairus, not only for this certain woman, but for you. Stop fearing and believe. Oh, this is a blessing to those involved, this is a blessing to the certain woman and we're going to see. It's a blessing to Jairus Hallelujah and amen. But, my friend, this is written that you might believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. This is written that you might believe. God did it for these people. He'll do it for you. This is written for you so that you might believe these things.

Speaker 1:

Do you see yourself here, pressing through the noise, desperate to hear a word, desperate for a solution? And maybe you've heard a few things about Jesus. Maybe you've heard that some people say he died on a cross and some people say that he's alive. Maybe you've heard testimony of Jesus working in the lives of other people around you. I know you've come up against something that you can't handle. You've come up against something that crushes you. You've come up against something that's this far from breaking you, this far, and you can't do a thing about it. And it humbles you To the point that you're willing To hear something. It humbles you to the point that you're willing To listen To what Jesus has to say. Oh, if you're there tonight, as Jesus turned to Jairus, he said Don't be afraid, only believe. Don't be afraid, only believe. Don't be afraid, only to believe, Because he's the Lord of all and he's able to take care of you. Now let's go a little further. With that in mind, go from the general to the specific. Amen.

Speaker 1:

The procession went on and they eventually got to the house and Jesus, he, jesus suffered. No man to follow him, nobody from this big crowd could go in, save Peter and James and John, the brother of James, and he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue and he seeth the tumult and then the wept and wailed greatly. Oh now, in that day, my friend, funerals weren't a quiet thing. Grief was expressed loudly, grief was expressed outwardly. People were really grieved, they would even tear their clothes. It was outward and maybe a few of these people really knew this girl and really loved this girl. And this was real, but a customary for high profile funerals to have hired mourners and it was a storm, it was chaotic, it was loud.

Speaker 1:

Jesus went from one loud situation into another loud situation and it was loud and it was loud and it was loud. Jesus went from one loud situation into another loud situation and it was loud and it was loud and it was loud and it was weeping and it was wailing and it was crying and it was grieving and it was shouting. And when he was come in. Oh, and he had to raise his voice again. I bet, why make you this ado? Why do you make this noise? Why do you make this noise? Why do you make this chaos? Why do you make? Why weep? The damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

Speaker 1:

And look how they reacted. They laughed him to scorn. They all turned to him and they reacted. They laughed them to scorn. They all turned to him and they laughed. They all turned to him and they mocked him. And that's all the Bible really has to say about it. When he put them all, jesus put them all outside. You see, he'd spoken. He walked into the storm, he walked in to the wailing and the weeping, he walked into the performance that many of them were doing. He walked into the situation and all he did was speak. And he spoke a word of unparalleled hope, unparalleled living hope that where there was a death, there wasn't really a death anymore. Because, though, she had died, that's true, but at this point she was raised from the dead, she was alive. And Jesus said that oh, my friend, how do you respond to him even now? Because Jesus wants to get beyond your situation. Jesus wants to get beyond your situation, jesus wants to get beyond your circumstances. Jesus wants to get beyond where you are in life. Go and get down to the specific. You and him. See, all of this was done.

Speaker 1:

This woman was healed. She had a blood impurity, she had a blood condition and she was healed. She had a blood impurity, she had a blood condition and she was healed. Her blood Made her unclean. But Jesus' blood. Look forward to Jesus' blood. Look forward to the cross.

Speaker 1:

What is his blood able to do? His blood is able to make the foulest Clean, even the worst of the worst, even the worst of the worst of the worst of the worst. His blood is able to make it clean. His blood is able to make you clean. And oh, this young woman. We've got to skip ahead a little bit.

Speaker 1:

He goes into the room, he takes her by the hand. The disciples are there, and also Jairus and his wife. Oh, my friend, jesus counted his faith for hers. Hallelujah. And he brought the dad and the mom in and he took her by the hand. Hallelujah. And he said damsel, I say unto thee arise. And straightway the damsel rose. Straightway she rose and she walked, for she was of the age of 12 years. They were astonished. The damsel herself had to be astonished, father and mother astonished, with a great astonishment.

Speaker 1:

Oh, my friend, you're spiritually dead tonight. Spiritually, you're on your deathbed. You're apart from God and left in your sin. And this damsel was raised up for you to show you what the Lord can do physically. And, my friend, I appreciate that blessing every day. My wife was younger than 12, but she was also on her deathbed, and the Lord also rose her up. And, my friend, inside you, though, there's a dead spirit. There's a dead spirit, there's a dead soul. You're dead in your sin.

Speaker 1:

The Bible tells us that. Dead in your sin, on your deathbed, marching and marching and marching, moment by moment by moment, into eternity, with the wrath of God hanging over your head, and all the hopelessness that surrounded this damsel situation, all the hopelessness that surrounded that certain woman's situation who had that condition. Oh, you may have some physical circumstances, but, my friend, let's talk about your soul and what the Lord is able to do for your soul tonight. He's the resurrection and the life, and whosoever believes in him, my friend, he'll pull you up out of your deathbed. He'll pull you up out of your death. He'll pull you up out of your hatred, out of your fornication, out of your adultery, out of your drunkenness, out of your blasphemy, out of your pride, out of your arrogance, because all of those are just symptoms, but the real cause of it is death. The real cause of it. You're separated from God, and so the fornication comes out. You're separated from God, and so the despair comes out. You're separated from God, and so the pride comes out. So the despair comes out. You're separated from God and so the pride comes out. You're separated from God, and so the blasphemy and the ego and all the rest, and the murder even, it comes out. It comes out, it comes out and you can't do a thing about it.

Speaker 1:

And oh, you've got all this noise around you. You've got all this noise around you. You've got all these voices around you. You've got teacher after teacher after teacher, you've got friend after friend after friend, and they all have their different explanations. And oh, maybe you try, but they fail.

Speaker 1:

Is yours a desperate heart tonight? Are you desperate for a change in your life? Are you desperate and you don't know how to put it exactly? You're like Jairus, you're like this woman All you know about Jesus is that he can help you. You don't know how, you don't know what it looks like, but you want it.

Speaker 1:

Oh hallelujah, my friend, jesus holds out his hand to you. He says don't be afraid, only believe, because whosoever believeth in me, I will in no way cast you out. Whosoever calls upon my name this is what Jesus says, not me. Whoever calls upon my name this is what Jesus says, not me. Whoever calls upon my name, I will save. Whoever calls upon my name shall be made new. All of your old will pass away. All things will become new, and that includes whatever sin torments you the most. That includes your attitude, that includes your heart, that includes your mind. You are raised up from the to a new life in Jesus Christ. Oh, my friend, these are written that you may believe. And do you see yourself in them?

Speaker 1:

Hallelujah, our musicians will come forward this evening. What's the Lord saying to you tonight? And, more importantly, how are you responding to him? Because you'll find it with a great degree of sobriety. Those who laughed and scorned Jesus put them out, and they weren't present when he worked a miracle in this young woman's life. And, my friend, if you laugh and scorn Jesus, that's you in this account. You're put out. If you laugh him and scorn him. He makes such an entrance to you Before his father. There's an entrance waiting for you. There's a glory waiting for you. There's a welcome waiting for you. There's salvation waiting for you. Call upon his name tonight. If you're here, these folks are going to play behind me.

Speaker 1:

I want you to simply come forward. I'd be glad to pray. Be glad to pray with you to be saved. Amen. And those who are far away on the other side of that camera. My friend, I want you to talk to Jesus. I want you to say I believe you. I want you to say I trust you. I want you to say I want you to be my Lord and my God and I want you to apply your blood to me. I want to be saved. I want to be made new. Let that faith come up into some words. Talk to him. Amen, my friend.

Speaker 1:

We want to hear about it. We want to know about it. We want to know you. We want to know what the Lord's done. We want to know your testimony. We want to know how to pray for you. We want to be an ongoing ministry to you. I want you to come and visit us in person. I want you to come and meet us, come to our services, and we look forward to meeting you and hearing what the Lord has done and we look forward to being an ongoing blessing to you. So reach out to us, especially. You know we've helped folks with travel arrangements before. Yeah, we're not, that's not an imposition on us. We're eager to do it and so call us. So send us, us a letter, send us an email. A lot of folks send me emails, hallelujah, and so reach out to us and we want to hear from you. And again, thank you for being a part of the broadcast today and may the Lord continue to richly bless us. Amen.
